I've now tried this place 3 times. I don't get it. At all. The "meat" for the burger tastes like rejected cafeteria food. It's bizarre how something can look so delicious yet taste so....well, not delicious. The burger has a very unique taste. That unique taste is not good. Maybe it's a acquired taste that I simply do understand? The fries were a small portion and very overcooked. Again...I don't get it. Maybe I'm missing something? Okay I know it is been here forever and people love it around here and it is cheap. I do suggest you try it once to just see. The food here is on par with 1980s Vienna grade school cafeteria. I am not being hyperbolic. Like I said try it. The people who like this place must think I'm in the mood for a burger. Not just any burger but a burger that makes McDonalds burger fancy. Ive been eating at and LOVING this burger place for as long as i can remember. Marion (right next door) is my hometown but I've been living in FL since i was a teenager, im 29 now. I still eat here every visit home. 4 times this last visit (I've been back for 2 weeks) and it has been frsh and delicious every time. Going through the Blue Gill "Best Places to Eat in Southern Illinois" list, we happened upon this place. Someone at work had let me try the fried mushrooms the week before and I did like them. The honey and I strolled into this small "greasy spoon" on a Saturday morning around 11 am. We saw many cars outside and a constant flow of cars. Many people headed to their car with little brown bags. We went in, grabbed a menu, and ordered at the counter. First, we were surprised at the pricing- SUPER CHEAP! We went for it and ordered 4 double cheeseburgers, a steak sandwich, a fish sandwich, and fried green beans. We waited about 10 minutes and were called up. Got a XL cherry coke to go. All that for $14 bucks. Can I just say- We loved it! had a sandwich in the parking lot and took the rest home because we failed to order it "loaded". We had to add Mayo with ketchup and mustard at home. The green beans were awesome! We will be back. read more

Don't expect a quarter pounder of Angus beef...just a really delicious, really unique burger. Overall I'd say it was pretty average. I had a double cheeseburger, a fish sandwich, and an order of fried mushrooms. The mushrooms only had 6 small mushrooms in the order, so that sucked. All of the food was piping hot and tasted the way you'd expect a burger, fish, and 'shrooms to taste, but there was nothing remarkable about any of it. Definitely nothing to make me go out of my way too eat there. The worst part was, they only take cash. Who carries cash anymore? The first place I ate at once I loved back was Polar Whip and the food tastes just like I remembered it. How many other burger joints can claim they have been around for 80 some odd years! Loaded with history a local family ran over generations hamburger shop that whipped inflation in the 70s and a unique taste not in a bad way at all more an addictive taste and the price cannot be beat. I have eaten there my whole life. We always stop in we get that way and sometimes it's the reason were going. If your on 57 with the time its worth the extra few miles the price would offset the little extra gas. this is the only chance cause its one of a kind. You can't go wrong with a burger and fries...some of the best fries around...crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
