So I went to steak' N shake for the first time in a long time the other night and I was very disappointed. When we arrived there was no workers in sight because a sign that said use the screen to order dine in or take out so we choose dine in. We got our milkshakes about 20 minutes after sitting down and I got the chocolate chip cookie dough and it was basically just vanilla. There was no pieces of anything in it and they gave it to us in to go cups even though we were dining in. Then we got our food about 45 minutes after that and they just called our number over the speaker and we did not get our cheese for our fries we paid for but the food was alright and they don't put seasoning for the fries on the table anymore. I went up asked for some seasoning and they said you have to pay $3 for it. All around I was not pleased. I don't know if they don't wanna pay for servers or just can't get good servers in but their new system seemed lazy, unhelpful and cheap. You have to order on your own, pick up your food at the front, refill your own drink and throw away your trash. It's like a cafeteria. read more

I keep wanting this to be a good experience but it never actually happens. The service is generally pretty shoddy and at times awful. The food is just OK and orders are often incorrect. Now let's talk about the cleanliness of the restaurant UGH comes to mind. It's always dirty and quite often the floor is sticky!! Tables are never cleared in a timely manner leaving a dirty and unpleasant appearance to the restaurant. It's not uncommon to hear employees "fussing" with the kitchen or each other. I've given this location quite a few chances over the years but I do think it's time to just say it's never going to improve and make other choices. Update: I decided to give Steak 'n Shake another try. They result was worst than before. I don't know what has changed to make this once beloved restaurant so horrible, but now I won't be back. I typically love a good sandwich and a milkshake, but today this place disappointed. We used the online ordering option and arrived 5 minutes before the promised time. It took another 10 minutes before our food was ready. This part is important because we were led to believe our food was cooked fresh. We only have a 3 minute drive home, so our food should have been nice and hot. Well, I ordered the original double steak burger and it was ice cold. My mom ordered the grilled chicken taco salad. The lettuce was actually rotten--like juicy rotten and totally obvious. The cooks couldn't have missed how gooey the lettuce was, so they must have not cared. My grandmother ordered a grilled chicken sandwich that was cold, stringy, and mushy. It was absolutely disgusting. I called the restaurant to see if we could get our meal replaced. It took three tries before someone actually answered the phone. Then, while waiting to speak to the manager, the line went "dead." I called back and the same thing happened. I gave up and ordered a pizza. While I've had several good meals here, today was disappointing and disgusting. It'll be a LONG time before I give them another try. read more

Our group of six ate at the Lancaster, OH restaurant Saturday, August 4th. I have mixed feelings about this particular location. The previous customers next to where we were seated apparently spilled a drink and the floor under and around our table was sticky and still somewhat wet. In general the floor looked like it could use a good steam cleaning which makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like. While we were waiting for our food, someone smeared off the tables around us, but paid no attention to the floor. The waitresses were friendly and attentive, but were frazzled and disheveled. One waitress looked like she hadn't changed her uniform in several days. We heard glass break two separate times in the kitchen area. Manager on duty? No real complaints about the food. This place has gone downhill fast. Had a bad experience here with lousy service, dirty utensils, etc last winter, and vowed to never return. Well we do love Steak and Shake, so I talked the family into giving them one more try. Big mistake! We waited close to 40 minutes for our food when the dining room wasn't even full. My son's plate contained an eyelash, gross. That was the final straw for this location. I may use a coupon for a BOGO milkshake in the drive-thru, but I'm never going to dine in again. I come here on occasion...no problems normally but tonight the sign says White Chocolate as a special flavor. We order the white chocolate shake, they don't say anything, we get to the window and confirm that we had ordered the white chocolate and they said they don't have white chocolate. If it were possible to give no or negative stars I would have. It's been a little while since my family and I have been here but last night decided to stop in. I was a little taken back at the fact that you now have to order your food from a kiosk and then go sit down. That wouldn't have been so bad except you also get your own drinks and then have to grab your own food after they scream your order number through out the building. Then when we finally get our food everything was cold. The wait was long and I I felt so bad for the elderly couple that came in right after us. They had no idea what to do and even getting their meal to the table was a little bit of a struggle and feel that someone should have helped them (which I ended up doing). My wife and I stopped in for a bite to eat on our way back to Columbus yesterday. First impression: clean, busy (good sign), attentive wait staff. We both tried the birthday cake shake and really enjoyed it. The sprinkles are a nice touch. The rest of our food was of good quality. Our server was friendly, but gave my wife and I each other's plates. She also forgot to bring me more water when I asked (those shakes can make you thirsty!). I honestly don't know where to start.... Yes, there were 15 of us, yes it was 10pm at night but it was a Saturday. The waitress took our drink order, brought our drinks and then took our food order, we NEVER saw her again. One hour later, our food starts coming out.. those of us that ordered milkshakes hadn't even received them yet and NO one had refills. Over half the food was cold, and that was of the orders that were right. The girl from the kitchen was bringing stuff out and being so kind trying to help. The one waitress they did have told us two others had walked out and another had called off and then got an attitude when we started saying things were cold, not right etc. By the time we finally got all our food and the milkshakes, it had been two hours since we arrived.. and did I mention we had no silverware or napkins? Then, when we went to pay, it was a disaster. When the waitress took our order she said everyone would have a "seat number" and if we gave the seat number when we went to pay, it would make it easier.. it wasn't. It was also a disaster. Everything had to be put in manually and I'm pretty sure we all got overcharged. At no point from the time we arrived till our food started coming did anyone come and say "I'm sorry for the wait/inconvenience" no one came to do refills, no one mentioned being short staffed - nothing. As someone who has worked in the food industry, this particular location should be ashamed at the way the company as a whole was represented in this transaction. Worst location I've ever been to and an utter disappointment. I love Steak n Shake, it's my guilty pleasure. But I've been to this specific location several times over the past months and only once had a half decent experience. My food is never hot, half the time the order is wrong, it takes forever to come out, and all but that one waitress (unfortunately I don't remember her name) they're plain rude. One day a blond waitress (I believe she was pregnant) even argued with me about my burger being cold and my milkshake completely melted. I used to work at a Steak n Shake and I'm a waitress now, I know the difference between food that's been in the window too long and fudge making a shake slightly melty on top. I've gone in on different days too, including Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Some were busy and some were not, yet it's always consistently crap service. I understand busy restaurants and am fine waiting longer, but something within reason please. It does not take 35 minutes to bring out a burger and fries (that were cold!). Today was absolutely ridiculous. I went in to get a to go order (around 9:30pm), and there was one person waiting to pay in front of me. Only one waitress was on the registers, the others were chatting. No one greeted me at the door at any point to make sure I wasn't waiting to sit down. No one came up to help the girl who was up there or help the line that ended up growing rather long to get moved through. The other waitresses weren't busy with tables, they were chatting in the server area. After 10 minutes I left, it was just stupid at that point to continue to wait for food that would probably take way too long to come and be sub-par at best. I'd be ashamed to be a waitress or manager here with how poorly it is consistently run. I can't say enough how much I would never recommend coming here. I live and work in/near Lancaster, and will not be getting Steak n Shake until I am up in the Pickerington area again- where the restaurant is clean, well-run, and *if* a mistake is ever made it is corrected quickly and not repeated. read more

We came in the restaurant is Pretty Dirty. Then I ordered a chocolate milkshake and it had bits of cookie and candy in it which tells me they do not clean the shake machine after they use it. My son ordered a hamburger without cheese and extra pickles they brought it out with cheese and no pickles we had to send it back. My family and I loved this place. I was never a hamburger person but my daughter had her heart set on this place. And im glade she did. I ordered the portabella steakburger and it was the best burger I have ever ate. Now it did take a little bit for us to receive our food but boy was it worth the wait. When we got our order my frys werent cajun like I wanted. But the waitress noticed and about 45 seconds later came out with the shaker to put as much as I would like. ( so good). Hi, My wife and I used to enjoy going to the Steak and Shake between Carroll and Lancaster, but in the past year, the service has slowed to a crawl. Today, for example, we stopped in for a sandwich before church, arriving at 3:00 p.m., plenty of time we thought. Wrong. I checked the grill several times and my wife's Frisco melt and my grilled cheese weren't even placed on the grill until 3:20. Finally at 3:25, with time moving ever faster, I told the waitress that--if we could get out order within 5 minutes--we would take it to go. Otherwise we'd have to cancel. Well, the order arrived within 5 minutes, but when we opened our sandwiches in the car, we found them to be uncooked, the butter merely melted, no toasting. Wasted food and wasted money. This is odd because we recently spent time in Indianapolis, having supper at the local S+S every night, and each night our food was delivered within 10 minutes with everything fully cooked. and that was in a crowded restaurant, in contrast to the one here at home which never seems to be crowded. We get seated and the waitress begins to tell us how busy and understaffed they are before she even greets us or takes our drink order. Then she precedes to tell is if we are thinking about ordering milkshakes it will be forever. When our food does come my sandwich is cold and there are barely any fries on the plate. I'm giving this streak and shake a 2 out of 5 because I almost always get good service and good prices but the last time we ate there just killed it for me...we had to wait for 5 minutes while the staff goofed off behind the drink station and when we did get sat it was another 10 before we got served! After that we ordered our shakes (you can't go to steak and shake and not get a shake) I ordered the double chocolate fudge and my girlfriend ordered the cookie dough...well when those finally got delivered (another 10 minutes) they were both wrong! Mine was a brownie shake and my girlfriends was cookies and cream. I didn't complain about mine but my girlfriend hates cookies and cream so we had hers remade (only 5 minutes this time). So I ordered the cheesy cheddar steak burger and when that was delivered the cheese was barely covering a third of the burger. And it was hard and not melting like the picture. When I mentioned it to the server she just stared blankly and said she'd tell the cook! No offer to remake it and no offer for anything else to be fixed or taken off the bill! So I held my tongue and we went to pay. Which then when she asked about everything I said it was alright except the cheese. And get this, then she told me the cook said its cheddar cheese and it gets hard when you don't eat it right away! The burger was the first thing I ate so unless it had been sitting in the window for 15 minutes it's crappy old cheese! I was very unhappy about this whole visit. I won't be back for a while... Not my first choice of fast food, but only place on the way home today. They always forget something from the order, usually the sides like fries or melted cheese sauce. Take out shakes overpriced and rarely a full cup, usually 2/3-3/4 full topped off with whipping cream. Ordered meal #1 and a Kid Mini Corndog meal with a side of melted cheese sauce today. Should have looked in the bag before I left, no melted cheese sauce or straws for the sodas. Hamburger was ok, bottom bun mushy, it was saturated with water, normally it's grease but today it was water. French fries cold and hard, lots of small over cooked fries. Mini corn dogs were fine. Orange soda syrup needs changed, it was orange in color but tasted like carbonated water. One would think after a twenty minute wait with only one car in front of me they could at least double check the order before they send it out to a customer. Only a ten dollar order, but I needed up wasting both orders of fries and a soda on top of not receiving melted cheese. I also hate how they have you pull to the corner to get your food. it makes no sense to me. if you want to be McDonald's put in a second window. This is the worst Steak And Shake I've been to! When we got our food from the drivethru, they didn't give us TWO chicken tender MEALS out of the 4 meals we ordered. Not only that, but they also shorted us a fry. Its just your standard steak and shake. same food as any other one i've been to - sometimes you really just need that kind of consistency when you're looking for a familiar place to eat. the prices are great, you can get an entire meal for 4 dollars. and the shakes are always amazing. read more

1 star is still too much for this place. If you are planning on coming here I would suggest stopping and getting a snack first. Came in tonight and they were busy as expected, waited on a table and after we sat down waited 20 minutes before a waitress came to the table. Then an extra 35 minutes waiting for drinks. (Got no refills because it took forever) We ordered our food and 3 milkshakes. Add another 40 minutes for 2 adult milkshakes and 1 kids milkshake. They came AFTER we ate, and that's with asking the waitress where they were multiple times. Upon my mom drinking the strawberry milkshake that tasted like anything but strawberry, she did not get to drink it because who knows what was in it. So they obviously don't clean the machines or accidentally added a flavor. A family in there ordered many, many milkshakes after we did and got theirs first. It shouldn't take over 40 minutes to put some ice cream and milk in a cup. Then after I almost finish my chicken sandwich I realize the entire center is pink. Now I am hoping I don't end up with food poisoning. Manager was told and blamed it on the "manufacture" no, it's because they barely cooked it. After the so called "manager" was addressing the complaints behind me and telling the guy she hoped he didn't swallow whatever it was he had, I regretted ever coming here. Other customers started getting their own drinks. Asked for a coke after the milkshake went to waste and got it when I was paying at the register. We waited as well for more refills to go since we didn't get any while we were eating, then the waitress forgot a cup I asked for twice.
