This is a busy and popular downtown establishment for a quick and/or late-night spot to grab a bite to eat. I placed an order via the app to be picked up and taken back to our hotel room for the night. We ordered two Frisco Melts and a regular Onion Ring. The order of onion rings consisted of 5 rings of varying size. That was a bit disappointing...but I digress. When we arrived, there were a few vagrants at the door holding it open for patrons, surely in hopes that someone might tip them on their way out. We proceeded to the counter marked for take-out orders. We were, almost immediately, approached by a woman who directed us to the "new" take-out counter. She explained to us that the location of the area previously used for take-out orders caused congestion in the entryway. We sat near the correct take-out counter, quietly, and waited for the app to let us know when our order was ready for pick-up. Another woman, working that counter, diligently assisted multiple customers with their orders and then she addressed us after seeing that we'd been sitting there for a while. The app didn't say that the order was ready, but she checked and it was. I asked about the extra Frisco Sauce that we'd requested, and she assured us that it was there and gave us a strip of paper with a QR code for the drink fountain. The fountain area was somewhat of a mess, being that it is self-serve and people are messy. Someone approached us wanting to use our codes. Having already used them, we told her that we didn't know if they would still work. She proceeded to help herself, immediately after us, and was able to pour herself soda in drink cups that she'd already acquired. I don't know if that is theft of beverages, but we were not involved! The extra sauce that we paid for was, in fact, not present. We approached the takeout counter and requested them. With sauce acquired, we braved the doorway and kept our heads down as we exited, so not to be accosted by the people acting as unofficial doormen and made our way back to our room across the street. We went into this location around 11:30am with a ton of kids. The staff was so kind, helpful, and quick to whip out our order - and it was all correct and fresh! The store was also clean, which was unique for the locations i've been to in the past haha! A young man also came out after our group's meal and offered free hats to all the kids. I'm a lifelong fan of Steak 'n Shake, but with none in Tucson, Arizona, I rarely get to go. I was thrilled that my hotel in Indianapolis was a 10-minute walk away and made it a point to venture out for dinner on my first night in town. The digital kiosks made for an easy ordering experience, giving me plenty of time to look over a menu I haven't seen in years without holding up the line. My food came up fast and prepared as ordered. Everything was delicious, and I was happy to be able to pick up a a can chili and bottle of fry seasoning to take home. Wow how the model of Steak n Shake has changed. They've scrapped the servers, scrapped the cashier. You now order on a kiosk. They call your name and order number over loud speaker to pick up at counter. We ordered a 5 way chili and frisco melt. They forgot to add the burger in the bag. Had to wave someone in the kitchen down to correct our order and low and behold, they never even made the burger. Had to wait for them to make, in a restaurant full of guests. The frisco melt was just okay. My brother-in-law loves their chili, so that was the only reason we went here. He loved it this time too. I wanted to elaborate on my delivery experience with Steak 'n Shake and the customer service I received. When my order arrived, the drinks were not protected or sealed in any way, which made them easily accessible for the delivery driver to tamper with. That is extremely concerning from a customer safety standpoint. Secondly, I ordered tater tots but instead received cold fries. My milkshake was also completely defrosted by the time it arrived. Overall, the quality of the food was unacceptable. When I contacted the store to address these issues, I was told there was no manager available. The employee I spoke with showed no empathy regarding my concerns and instead became argumentative. I was ultimately told to "do whatever I wanted to do with it," which was very unprofessional and dismissive. I did not spend my hard-earned money to receive cold, incorrect food and beverages that appeared unsecured and unsafe. Stopped in tonight before the pacers game to eat. You order on a kiosk and there were plenty to go around. Prices are a bit high at this location due to being downtown. Once we ordered we had no issues finding a clean table. Food was being made fresh and took a minute to come. Everything was hot, well assembled and tasted like the Steak 'n Shake we remembered. But they were also fairly large more than I needed The grill master was busting his hump and working hard Place seemed to be fairly staffed and it did not seem that busy for its size yet we waited 10 minutes which is too long for two shakes. I'm honestly surprised by the reviews of this location cause when I went I had a very pleasant experience. All of the workers were incredibly kind, welcoming me and asking how I am; no idea what these other people experienced but I can 100% say the workers are NOT rude. I ordered a single patty burger, fries and a Reese's chocolate shake. The burger was just ok for me but definitely not terrible. I think I just didn't like the pepper taste it had. Fries were delicious. That shake tho!!!!!!! OMFG YES!!!!!! If I could marry that shake, I would. It was thick and creamy and tasted like heaven. Lots of love went into making it. I was gonna give this place a bad review, but because the manager on duty was so wonderful and the one employee was so great. I'm gonna give them more stars. My order never came back to the kitchen so we had to wait a while and then when we asked the nice gentleman where was our food was he looked into it and then told his manager that our order never came out. They had a computer problem. So He hurried and made our order and the wonderful manager refunded us our money back and gave us the food. Because how wonderful those two were we will come back. Update: day two I went again and ordered the same thing via the phone app. Was in the restaurant right after I submitted the order and I watched the online order desk and no one ever called my name. I got no alerts on my phone to let me know the order is ready. I walked up to the counter and the guy, but gradually went and checked and grabbed it from the back area . I don't know if it had been sitting there for five minutes or one minute. But I was not notified when it was ready ..This was my first time here and although I had to wait for a kiosk, it was not too long of a wait. I got a Frisco and a Reese's peanut butter shake with chocolate and they were both amazing. Came here on a weekday during a convention week in downtown Indy. Placed my order online. It took around 5-10 minutes longer than the stated time when I arrived. The store was packed and gives off diner vibes. Reminds me a bit of In N Out. I got an original steakburger, vanilla milkshake, and a chili 5 way. The steakburger was solid. I noticed the beef had a strong black pepper flavor. I'm a fan of black pepper, but that was the first time I noticed a black pepper flavor in a burger at a fast food chain. The shake was thick and indulgent. The sweetness paired well with my greasy burger. It felt like a drinkable ice cream. I've never had chili 5 way before, so I was intrigued when I saw it in the menu. The chili was a bit watery, so I was not the biggest fan of this dish. It could barely hold onto the noodles. However, I liked the fresh onions on it. I wouldn't get it again though. Steak 'n Shake isn't something we have back home in the Bay Area, so I was happy to try it. To begin with can't say the service was great because it was with a kiosks. Place was a little messy which is a big no for me. But my friends insisted in staying. Moreover I give this Steak 'n Shake 1 one star because I didn't get my order right. I had said no onions and ketchup on my burger and that's the first thing I see once I get it. Also I waited 40 minutes for my order which was ridiculous. Oh and I'm not done my burger was cold and fries as well. After being pleasantly surprised at the quality I've had at the SnS closest to my home, I've been open to trying other SNS locations. This is a downtown location at a notable intersection right across the street from the mall, near St Elmo's and the convention center. So there's a lot of tourists, business people, and others just looking for a relatively affordable lunch. I will say this SNS is different than others in that the menu seems a bit more limited. For example, I couldn't find an option on the kiosk for a single steakburger. The prices are also higher. Its still a good deal for downtown Indianapolis, but if you're used to the $4 meals, you won't find them here. Despite being really busy, this location is relatively clean and decently staffed. But I can't say this is the best SNS experience I've had. At the location closest to my home, I can see the steam coming off of my burger and the bun is warm and toasty. Here, it was still warm but not hot. And the bun didn't seem toasted at all. Still good for a meal and there's not many options downtown for less than $6. Very busy at 3 am, with the bar-goes coming in, and filled with drunk people (ages 20-60) from the area. Our waitress was a charm, always so sweet to us but talking business to the people who got in the way of her serving - gave her a hefty tip for that. Service was slow due to the amount of people, but I feel like our food still shouldn't have taken that long. The fries were super thin, with unevenly distributed toppings (I got the Parmesan Cheese Fries). Burgers were good, but not great. I forgot the name of the burger that I ordered but the waitress put in the wrong order. However, she was very apologetic about it. The restaurant was very understaffed, she was very overwhelmed. Now, here comes the struggle. I asked for the check and the waitress told me she couldn't take cards, only cash. I tell you, it took close to 30 minutes to pay. It took three times as long for me to pay than it took from eating. The cashier area was a complete clusterf*ck between folks dining in, taking out, and waiting for Uber Eats. I said you did. They could have head lice I had to check my food right in front of them. They did not offer to change it and give me a new food. They refuse to give me fresh food. If you go to the West coast, you will want to try In-n-Out burger. If you go to the South, you will want to try What-A-Burger. However, if you come to the Midwest, you won't care whether you have Stake 'n Shake or not. And that is because their burgers are nothing special. In my opinion, for the price that you pay, the burger is pretty good. However, since Stake 'n Shake is a big chain, I would expect better quality. I will recommend you to go to Stake 'n Shake if you are looking for a very cheap meal. Or if you are trying to eat something after a long night at the bars! However, I would not recommend going there just because you are craving some burgers. If that is the case, you have a lot of better options to choose from in Indy. read more
