I had an Egg Nog Milk Shake in the spirit of the season- That was excellent- Had a cup of chili ..god awful, seemed like it came right out of a can, just a bowl of muck. Had a triple with cheese, I didn't want french fries- but our waitress sent them along anyway- I had a few, they were greasy, thin, tasteless and what I expected, and why I didn't order them to begin with- I think I was charged for them, but the whole triple with fries was still less than 5 bucks, so who cares? Our waitress was young, and she tried real hard, but I don't think she has a future as a waitress, I asked for the chili, first, before the burger...that was reversed..As it turns out, as mentioned before, the chili was so bad, it didn't matter, only ate half of it. I also had to ask her a 2nd time after the food arrived, for my milk shake. The burger was just average at best. I think for burgers and fries, along the same line- Culver's blows away S n S A table across the way, sent their order back. Asked for a booth and was seated in the front part of the restaurant. I was completely ignored for over ten minutes while other guests were seated and had their orders taken, including the group of four behind me! So, I left. I have left reviews of other Steak and Shake locations with a similar theme - get seated (or told to find my own) and get ignored while everyone else gets served. This seems to be a company wide thing to ignore solo patrons. We still bring in money, especially during repeat business. Much like the White Castle up the street, this is a chain that disappeared entirely from my city back home well over a decade ago. As such, I figured they were pretty much all gone for good until I moved here and saw it beckoning at me one morning while I was driving down Barrington Road. It's amazing how certain chains are a hit in one part of the country and an abysmal failure in others. Much like Denny's and IHOP, Steak and Shake was always a big hit among me my friends growing up because the dining room was open 24 hours which nicely accommodated the juvenile delinquent lifestyle. I am glad to report that this is still the case in regards to this location, it's open 24 hours and they are more than capable of accommodating the adult delinquent lifestyle. I had a couple of friends visiting me last weekend from Madison and it was damn near 3 AM after a night out at the bars when all of us got that primal calling from below screaming out drunkenly for "FOOD"! Since this was the closet place to my house that I was sure was open, it became our Uber pilgrimage for the evening. For 3 AM, I was pretty surprised at how many people were there. I spent a very long time as a server and bartender in my younger days, and It certianly qualified as busy enough that wait staff and kitchen would have to hustle to stay on top of things. This is not the easiest thing to pull off for normal people at 3 AM. Even still, our server greeted us enthusiastically and almost immediately, though I could tell in the back of her mind she was probably thinking "Oh boy, here we go again, another fresh crop of plastered people to flirt inappropriately with me and have table manners like a Neanderthal". To our credit, all of us behaved quite well the entire time despite our medicinal levels of drinking earlier, and her level of service was excellent. I am not normally a huge fan of extremely chatty servers, but under the circumstances it was just what the doctor ordered. She was a total sweetie. I had skipped dinner earlier in favor of drinks, so I was starving. This coupled with my condition that night probably made the food taste even more epic than is probably justified, but GOD DAMN was it delicious. It was even better than a remembered from back in the day. So much so that I am nearly tempted to bestow 5 stars on this place. I went with a double jalepeno crunch steak burger with cheese fries. The burger was thick and delicious and the veggie toppings were fresh and still iceberg cold when it got to the table. It does not quite rival a burger from Fuddruckers, but it was in the same ballpark no question. The fries were also a pleasant surprise. Steak and shake fries used to suck back in the day. They were really thin and almost devoid of flavor other than salt. The new thicker version is a drastic improvement. My only complaint was that the cheese sauce was not quite tangy enough for my taste. I decided to go for the gusto and wash it all down with a Snickers milkshake, and this was similarly delicious. Nice and thick and not skimping on toppings. I have never in my life considered Steak and Shake for anything other than late night dining to be completely honest, but after that night I seriously considering revising that mantra. read more

I haven't been to Steak 'N Shake in about a year, but I was here recently and had a good experience. I ordered one of the specialty burgers -- the Guacamole Steak Burger. I can't say enough about this burger... it was DELICIOUS. All the included condiments were SPOT ON. There was a little bit of lingering spiciness in each bite. Not sure if this was from the pepper jack cheese or the guac (maybe both?), but it was just the right level of spice to push what would probably be a standard burger up a notch. The red onion was the clincher for me. I love onions, and had they used white onions instead of red, it would have ruined the burger. I noticed on the menu that they are also featuring a guacamole hot dog. I'll have to try this next time. Without a doubt, I would go back again for another guacamole steak burger. YUM! read more

Hands down Jessica gives amazing customer service every single time I'm there. The food is always fresh and hot and I'm always checked on. I also want to compliment Denise who was working the drive through on New Years Eve when I stopped by to get my mom something to eat after I got off work. She is so pleasant, polite and an absolute sweetheart. Working on holidays and being away from your family is rough and I know because I do it too. This is due to a recent bad dining experience on 9/3/2007 which included the following sucky things: * Served an iced tea with crap floating in it because the ice tea maker wasn't cleaned for over 24 hours. Although, I suspect my waitress spat in it as well as other food items which were served at my table. * My party was served cold soup and half of the cups were less than half full. * Our waitress only stopped at our table 2 times during the meal: to take our order and to deliver our food and check. * Overcharged for meals, staff had attitude of "So what... Up yours" when asked to make corrections. * Tables and seating dirty and sticky since staff wasn't properly cleaning up after people left. * No receipt issued upon payment. The list above has been reported to SNS corporate offices, and a conversation is pending with the district manager. I do not plan on returning to this location. EDIT (10/1/2007): The district manager has not gotten back to me yet, even though I have given second notice to corporate. EDIT (12/3/2007): The district manager finally contacted me during the week of 10/8 and apologized for the incident. The district manager had the third shift of this location purchase and send me a $25 gift card as well as apologize in writing for the incident. Breakfast only review: I love this place for breakfast. It is my go to when I am in the mood for greasy, bad for me morning food. And, it's super cheap. I also like that I can get a sandwich with just egg and cheese and not pay for the meat I'm not getting. My son and I both eat for under $10 (including tip). My service has always been really good too! The reason it is down one star is because their coffee is so bad it's not even drinkable. Went here late night in March. March 26th to be exact. The server walked us to a table and tried to seat us at a table that had 3 dirty plates and 3 empty used cups. Obviously the server was not going to sit us there so she sat us at another table. We ordered our drinks and our food at the same time. As time passed, 5 mins or so I finished my drink and waited for another refill. That took about another 10 mins. Steak n Shake had maybe 4 other tables at this time (remember I said I was late, around 2am) and my guest an I noticed there was 11 dirty tables! 11! ELEVEN DIRTY TABLES! I was disgusted and grew super impatient of waiting for our food (about 30-35 mins after our order was took). I walked up to the front desk and asked what is taking sooooo long. A woman who was not doing much work nor working hard threw her hands in the air and shouted "The drive thru, the drive thru!" She was very rude and unprofessional! My guest and I didnt see a line of cars in the drive thru. We seen 2 the whole visit! Before our food came out and to our table wr said we are leaving and we stood up to walk out. We then were yelled at and were told we had to pay for everything we ordered! I got pissed because all we got were 2 drinks and I cup of chilli, never got our main meal! I said we will pay for what we recieved and what we ate. "Nope, you have to pay for everything and we are calling the police, said the rude manager. My guest ended up paying for everything as I waited out side foe the police who were supposedly called to arrive. As I waited I watched as a crew of people, who were not present when we were ready to dine, SCRAMBLE to clean the tables. I waited and waited but no police showed up.
