It's quite unfortunate how much this franchise has slid down the totem pole these days, since they clearly have life left and a message to send. Steak'n Shake has become of my buddy and I's go to meal spots, even though the location that was nearest to us (Randhurst) has closed it doors for good (RIP). The ability to get a great milkshake and some great food is tough to beat, though I'd certainly rank some local establishments and places like Portillo's much higher. Every time we've been to a SNS recently, its been sorta dead. A few people roll in occasionally, but it doesn't seem to get jumping like it used to. It would be nice to have a more lively feel inside. The self-order kiosks are new but useful, so no complaints there. For starters , some onion rings. A classic fried snack, and here, they do em' right, a Solid 8/10 . I went for a grilled cheese combo as my mains. The sandwich was great, and I enjoyed every last morsel. The fries are okay, they tasted good but nothing to write home about. My buddy had the garlic double steak burger , and seemed to like it, though not amazed by it. Of course no SNS meal is complete without a milkshake! I tried the cotton candy one, and my what a delight it was. Perfectly sweet and just right touch of that classic CC flavor. Been awhile since I visited here. I dined inside for a change. The restaurant is clean but I wasn't expecting to order from a kiosk. All the employees are in the back. No more taking your order at the table. Ok, so the ordering part was easy. I didn't quite understand the part where you get a scan code on the receipt on order to fill your drink. An employee helped me with that. I wish they would just fill the drink as part of the order. The food was very good. Hot and fresh. And those fries cooked in beef tallow! What a great change. I was so excited when I saw that they have chicken strips and that they now try everything in beef tallow!!! I ordered the three-piece chicken strips with tallow onion rings and they were absolutely delicious. Highly recommend coming here and trying it. My husband got the chili 5 way and loves it. Everything is self serve, you order off of a large tablet and if you order a drink the tablet will print a bar code that you have to scan to get the fountain drink machine to unlock for you. We had an offer on our receipt to take a survey and get a free shake so my husband did the survey and next time he goes in he will get a free shake. The atmosphere is nice and relaxing. I miss being waited on and chatting with a waitress, but that's OK we are getting used to it. I b highly recommend coming here if you wanna have a nice visit with a friend and relax and maybe play a card game or board game... because nobody's going to be bothering you. My son had a coupon for a free small milkshake and to my surprise, it is now self service. You go to a kiosk order and pay for your food and then pick it up at the counter when it's ready. Very different from what I remember! It was very bright and clean in the restaurant. We weren't able to use the kiosk for the coupon so a worker had to enter it for us. She was very nice! It's been so long since we stopped in a Steak n Shake but I couldn't think of anything negative on my recent visit so 5 stars it is! This place has always brought nostalgia to us in our young adult years and we were pleased that it was still a pleasant experience! Our family arrived late in the night and they were still an hour from closing, half of the chairs were put up on top of the tables but the remaining staff was all good to let us in (no thanks to Chicago Ramen -- read my other review about it) and put extra chairs down for us. We had no wait in ordering since they had opened kiosks. It was super easy process and it didn't even break a bank. We got our bellies filled for a family of 4 under $30 with drinks and kids meals. The most expensive "meal" was my Spaghetti Chili 5-Way at $7. With inflation in the economy nowadays, I'm shocked that price still exists Everyone loved the skinny fries and it tasted great with their Frisco sauce. The only thing that was a bit of a hassle is that you needed to keep a QR code to scan for drinks. But if the machine gives you any trouble just ask staff for help and you should be good to go. Another bonus is the bathroom was very clean and that's a great impression. We used to come here with our friends for late night meals and this place brought back some memories. I'm just glad they're still around and the food still tastes great. It's not your upper high end restaurant and if your expectations are in line, it's honestly the perfect place for a quick eat. Was very good! Bread was nice and fluffy, patty was juicy, crispy fries and food was piping hot. I also ordered a chili and it was my least favorite. I was very taken aback by the rude service. There wasn't enough ice in my drinks, and when I went to pay with cash, and the lady screamed at me why I didn't put my card in yet. The fries here were gross and the waiter had a really bad attitude and gave me multiple side eyes. I also found a small hair in my shake and thought this was extremely repulsive and concerning to say the least. This HoffMan Estates Steak N Shake is pretty much what you would expect out of this chain. The food is consistently good quality. The staff at this restaurant are friendly. The only negative part of the experience is the long drive through wait. This is generally the situation at Steak N Shake drive throughs. The food is made to order, so it slows down the situation, you have to know what you are getting into with their drive through. It's never going to be as fast as a McDonalds or Wendy's drive through, but it will be better quality. read more

We really like Steak n Shake in general. We used to take the kids here for dinner after a class weekly. The class is over now but we still stop in when we can. The prices here are almost too good. We all ate until we burst for breakfast on Saturday, and the bill barely cracked $25. My 5 year old ate three pancakes. He will ususlly only do that for my wife or McDonalds. Fried eggs were a little too crispy but no other complaints about the food. However, the restrooms were atrocious. Seriously needed attention at 9 AM. This place is tucked inside a oasis of restaurants, so it's somewhat easy to miss off of Higgins Rd. I love this fast food in Hoffman Estates. It is my first time to try them and the place was the usual fast food spot but it was incredibly clean inside. We used the kiosk while ordering our foods and I must say that it is better and it is way easier. Food was quick. We prefer to dine in to enjoy the experience inside and we never regret. The ambiance is comfortable and we enjoyed the food. Food has a good and everything has a nice portion. They are all hot as well. I highly recommend their shakes cause it was so good. But Peter B. is right, this Steak n Shake (as most) does seem to attract a really odd collection of patrons. High school kids, hometown people back for the holidays (AKA me), and random old people that probably go there every day for the early bird. My absolute favorite is the Frisco Melt. I can't even begin to really describe it properly - I drool just thinking about it. Steakburger with "Thousand Island dressing" (it doesn't really taste like Thousand Island - it's BETTER), and a big layer of melted cheese. It's an orgasm between two slices of bread. I also like their shoestring fries, and of course, the requisite shake (made with real milk and ice cream). I've never had a problem with service here. The servers do look like they're annoyed when there's a particularly large group of people, but I'm sure I would be annoyed too. After your meal, don't sit around waiting for your server to take your money - you pay for your check up at the counter. Num num, definitely an old standby when I go back home! read more

Restaurant Review I can find the shake, but where's the steak! The whole concept of premium steak in my burger was novel back 5 years ago before premium angus burgers started to hit the menu at McD. I use to crave coming to steak and shake to eat there steak burgers and always would leave wondering why my experience is so so. Most likely because the steak burgers themselves are very thin minced up patties of unrecognizable beef with a super lightweight burger bun. The pictures sell you on the most wonderful burger but really the burger itself is worse than McD. I would always get the burger dinner combo which is not on the menu and comes with 2 sides. I ended up getting onion rings which were over fried that the rings themselves look dark brown and shoe string fries that tasted off. Maybe it is something with the oil. Now there is ONE positive and that would be the wonderful milk shakes at steak n shake. I can't say I have ever had a bad milk shake here. The double chocolate fudge was perfect with rich chocolate milk shake and fudge throughout. I should just come here for the milk shakes! 24 Hours! There's something really comforting knowing that I can get a Steak n Shake SHAKE any time of day or night. Breakfast ends at 11 and not a minute later. Burgers are surprisingly good, fries OK. Chilis pretty good. Fast. Lots of seating options, well lit and lots of windows. Can be a lot of traffic by there and tough to go South. Be careful. read more
