I am actually very sorry to have to update my review and downgrade the awesome review that I previously wrote. I was back in the area for the annual event that takes me and my associates to Cherry Hill. We were looking forward to another great night there and this time, we did not experience the same quality and service as last year. Service: We were seated immediately and our server came to take a drink order in a few minutes. However, the drinks took about 15-20 minutes to get to the table which for a smaller establishment is a bit unacceptable. The front of the house told me how they were very busy with a party but frankly, I did not see a party and in fact saw a few empty tables. The entire table ordered a Caesar salad to start and it was prepared tableside, The lovely server who was preparing the salad admitted to being there only a few days and when the salad was served, it was painstakingly obvious. One salad had a lot of dressing, another was pretty dry. One salad had loads of croutons and the other had none. One salad had noticeable garlic and anchovies and the other none. The main courses that we selected were very basic, formerly staples of the house. Our order was taken just before the salads came out and it was close to an hour before the dishes were served. I again went to the front of the house to see what the issue was and was informed of the mystery party. I mentioned my prior Yelp review and it was at that time that I was informed that this was not the same Steak 38 as last year. Apparently the place was sold between our visits. There were 3 ribeye orders, 1 filet and the fried lobster tails. The lobster was the best dish and, well, when you fry most anything, it comes out pretty well. Of the 3 ribeyes, we all agreed that they were devoid of flavor. I believe the chef may have forgotten the basics of salt and pepper before cooking. One ribeye was such a bad cut of meat that it was terribly veiny and fat. Of the 14 ounces, maybe half was edible. After arriving there at 645 PM, we were asked about dessert around 915 and frankly we had no desire to see if they destroyed the bananas foster that we enjoyed last year so we asked for the check and left. It is always sad when a great place changes hands and the new owners cannot maintain what the others did so well for so many years. read more

I went to this restaurant, it is not highly visible and you don't hear much about it. But the service was exceptional. The waiters were friendly and one of them even sang for us as we waited for our food. He has a great voice. The food was excellent, service was great. Only one star because the service was decent. I am sorry, I wanted to like this place but the food was terrible. The steaks were extremely salty and quality wise, looked like they were bought at a discount grocery. We had a NY Strip and a Ribeye both were poor quality. My steak tasted as if it had been under the heat lamp for 20-30 minutes. ( order to service was about 40 minutes). My wife got the "signature" Lobster Fra Diablo, first presentation wise, they could've done better. They just piled everything on the plate without any thought. The sauce was basic jar sauce with red pepper seasoning sprinkled in and the pasta was way over cooked. For the price of this dinner, I would've expected much better. I'm not totally on board like most seem to be at Steak 38. We've been twice now and had basically the same experience. The staff is impeccable and super friendly, the wine list is pretty good, filled with plenty of highly rated wines, not only expensive too which is great! The menu offers many, what I believe to be traditional steakhouse offerings including plenty of seafood choices which is great! My issue, and my wife's also, is that nothing was really all that great. On both trips we had the Steak 38 which is a 20oz filet prepared table side with a seafood appetizer (we usually swap it cause we're not oyster folks) a basic side salad (super basic but the caesar is 8$ bump) a twice baked potato, green beans and bananas foster for dessert. On both trips we were just not that excited. The steaks while perfectly grilled offered no seasoning, just meat, usually some salt and pepper will do or some places do the butter thing (a la flemings) but here, nothing. The green beans seem to be a mix of fresh crisp beans and something I imagine is more canned (super soft, squishy and deep green) and the twice baked is just dry and also unseasoned, no butter, just a twice baked potato that's dry. I have certainly enjoyed our visits, the staff is always friendly, the atmosphere classic, the vibe, unique (it's attached to a motel on a busy road) however I just don't need to go back and I guess that's where I stand with Steak 38. I'm right in the middle here because of the friendliness and vibe but the whole reason for dining out, the food, doesn't thrill me in the least here. read more

Last Saturday night, my girlfriend and I decided to revisit our favorite restaurant Steak 38. We and friends have dined at Steak 38 for many years. However, after dining there a few times over the last few years the food was not appetizing (an understatement). Additionally, the service was less than satisfactory! This past Saturday night, it was like day and night. Our dinner was excellent and so was the service. We usually ask for thousand island dressing for our salad...but in lieu of not have it we order Caesar dressing. The steak was buttery and delicious. The filet was rare. My girlfriend loves rare, I prefer medium rare. But either way it was excellent. As usually, the bananas foster was great. We will be back. This place is great. If you are driving by you will miss it. While it is attached to a, let's call it hotel, it is a locals hangout which I love to find when traveling on business. I sat at the bar and Steven was the bartender. Great guy. Knows everyone but also included me in conversation. Makes a great drink. Knows his craft. Now this is why I cannot give 5 stars. I'd you order food at the bar it will have to be handled by wait staff in the "restaurant" and you will have to sign two checks. I was there at happy hour. Mussels red came in a roasting pan! Awesome! As much as I love Chickie and Pete's mussels red, these were as good if not better. A huge portion, red sauce was great, and when you take the garlic bread and dunk, yummy! My fiancé and I love this place! The food is always excellent and the seafood is super fresh. We typically always get steak because it is a steak house and I've never had a problem with the way it is prepared. Always made to my liking and delicious! They have the best peppers that are served with bread upon being seated. Service has always been great for us, but can be a little slow at times if they are busy. Totally worth the price! I wish I had known they had a cocktail menu sooner because their cocktails are great! I totally recommend the raspberry martini. It's amazing! We will definitely be coming back because this place has quickly become our favorite date night spot. My family and I went here for my birthday dinner tonight and I am so glad we did!! I wanted a good filet mignon with bernaise sauce. I definitely got it. Bussers were really good with clearing everything (I am a busser so i appreciate it, especially with a bigger table), waiter was very good and nice also. The manager or whoever the women at the front was very nice too. So all in all a very good and attentive staff. I got a 12 oz filet with mashed potatoes and I got the gorgonzola crust on top with a side of bernaise sauce. My whole family really liked the place. Pricey, but you pay for what you get here and it is a steak place so I wouldn't expect anything less! Doesn't look like much if you pass it, but if your reading this you should definitely give it a try! Also, our steaks were cooked exactly how we all wanted them to be. Absolutely fantastic. My girlfriend and I split the bruschetta which was the best I've had in recent memory. My entree was the 12 oz NY Strip and perfect doesn't even being to explain it. It was the perfect temperature and the garlic topping was a great compliment. The veggies were plentiful and had a unique spice to give it an extra pop. My girlfriend loved her Clams and Spaghetti, there was a ton of clams in the dish and the sauce was really good. Our servers were great too. After three visits to this establishment, my first 5 star review still stands. Our last visit was on Valentine's day. It was very busy but we were never neglected or rushed. As a matter of fact, we were more than a half hour late. When I called the restaurant to notify them that we wouldn't be able to arrive on time, we were told not to worry, that our table would be held for us. We usually order steak but the hubby ordered the panako breaded lobster tails. The portion was enormous and he ate every bit. Just writing this second review because this place is consistently excellent. And if you can keep a five star rating on one of the busiest eat out occasions you're the best of the best. Did I mention that the wait staff includes 2 servers per table? From the hostess to the serving staff and to Ben who held our table a great big thank you. I made a phone reservation on Saturday March 10 at 2 pm at Steak 38 since it was near where some out of town friends were staying. They told me they could not seat us until 8 -after asking for a 7:30 reservation. We got there exactly at 8 and were told to wait for people getting up.in a few minutes. At 8:45 we left as it appeared no one was near the end of their dining. This was an old school overbook and hope that someone does not show. No apology, no nothing like "can we give you some wings or cheese while you wait at the bar? We are so sorry" Zero, Nada. Two older gentlemen who have no clue. None of us had been there before and it looks like they get a regular local crowd. If you want an upscale dining experience this is not for you. Plus- The bathrooms were dirty and the place is a tired restaurant -next to a shabby motel. Stay clear of Steak 38 unless you want aggravation. read more

This place is the definition of "don't judge a book by its cover. " It is attached to a motel, but that does not reflect the quality of the food. I had read positive reviews before and was craving crab cakes, so we decided to try it out. We were greeted by the very friendly owner (I assume), and our server was attentive and friendly. The bread and seasoned butter was delightful, as we looked through the menu and chose our meals. We started with cocktails; I had a Tito's Cosmo (a typical $12) and the hubs had an Old Fashioned. I'm not sure what kind of bourbon it was, but it was pricey - good, but pricey. We had the clams casino, which had excellent flavor, but were really, really small, considering they were 6 for $12. This was the least impressive part of the meal. Next, I had the ceasar salad (I get one at every new place I go), and it was absolutely fabulous. The dressing was addictive. My hubs got a really yummy French onion soup, and the cheese was deliciously crispy. For dinner, I had the crab cakes, and to say they satisfied my craving is an understatement. They were essentially all crab- as little filler as possible while keeping them together. YUM. They were $28, which honestly, is what I would expect from real crab cakes like this. My husband got the NY strip with Bernaise, and it was cooked perfectly medium rare. It was an absolutely fabulous steak. The sides were whipped potatoes and asparagus, which were tasty, but a bit sparse. Overall, this was a delicious, albeit pricey, meal. I'd go back for a special occasion, for sure, but the price point would keep me from being a regular. It was a very pleasant surprise and I hope they do well coming back from the COVID situation, now that NJ has indoor dining again (though they also have a nice patio with retractable windows, where we sat!). read more

Steak 38 is a old fashioned steak house that might be confused with being a seafood restaurant or a Italian restaurant. What I'm trying to say is that you have many choices when you eat at Steak 38. The small, quaint restaurant is located just acrossed the Ben bridge on rt. 38. I went there with a longtime friend from London who lives nearby. Upon entering, the room, it was dimly lit and filled with antiques and the wait staff was a little stuffy. After being seated, the waiter gave us menus and politely asked me to remove my hat. Well it wasn't a hat it was a Dred cap that I stuffed my nearly waist length hair into it. I asked him "are you sure you want me to do that?" He replied with "It's a policy here" "Okay..... then I ripped my cap off and everyone in the dinng room, including the stuffy waiter gasped as the great wall of dreadlocks flew in the air and neatly settled on my shoulders and back. The waiter looked a little flustered and in my mind I was saying " Shows over folks, nothing to see here " Things went back to normal and we ordered our food. My friend chose everything Seafood and she was quite satisfied, I picked the Clams Casino which are clams cooked in the shell with butter, roasted veggies, bread crumbs, cheese, chopped clam meat and bacon. Totally delicious! Next I ordered the Caesar salad which was made table side by Mr. stuffy himself and when I asked for a little crumbled bacon on my salad, he sighed a little. The salad was wonderful, with fresh ingredients and skillfully crafted by Mr. stuffy. For my entree I chose the Steak Diane, which is filet mignon smothered in a delicious sauce made of onions, mushrooms, Worcester sauce and other ingredients. The filet mignon was like butter, tender and juicy and the creamy Diane sauce was on point. For dessert we shared a Banana Foster, which was made at the table by guess who- Mr. stuffy. I enjoyed this dessert many times in Mexico and I wanted to see if there was a difference here. Everyone should experience a table side prepared dish at least once in their life and the banana, ice cream, pistachio, rum flambeed concoction is fabulous. I have to say first that I love this place so don't judge me to harshly after my first comments. My first visit was through a Living Social deal. You have to love these deals. They are usually to places you don't even know exist and wouldn't have found if it weren't for the need to be cheap and get a bargain. Me all the way! Having followed GPS to the restaurant, I was kind of surprised when we drove into the parking lot. This place looked closed. If it hadn't been for Living Social, I would never have stopped here! My husband, who is so used to me doing strange things, asked if we were really in the right place. I assured him that we were despite the exterior and in we went. This was like stepping right into a Godfather movie. Seriously. Right down to Vic Damone, Frank Sinatra and velvet wallpaper. The wait staff is standing by, serving only on the right, to fulfill your every whim. Wow! The food, specifically steak since I've found seems to be the most difficult for tri state restaurants to do right, was outstanding. As was everything else composed in this meal. I came here on New Year's Day to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was our first time back since they reopened with their additional seafood menu. We had a Living Social deal which gave us some incentive to make the drive to Cherry Hill from our home in Medford. The atmosphere was definitely old school. When you first walk we were greeted by the woman in a coat check room. I had on my long coat so it was nice to get it put on a hanger. Its dark inside and the bar is the first thing you see. It's not big, and had a couple of older gents who I would guess are regulars, as there was no wait for tables that night. We had a reservation and were seated right away, so I can't comment on the bar service. The dining room is small and the tables are fairly close together, but not so much you feel like you are on top of the table next to you. The music playing had plenty of Sinatra (not a fan personally, but it fit the atmosphere) and other songs in that style, mixed in with some Christmas songs that I was tired of hearing - it was New Year's Day, enough of that please. Our waiter was young, but acted very professional. I started with a cup of the snapper soup. It had a little bite to it which I liked, but I wouldn't have wanted any more bite. It was nice and hot. For my main course, I got the NY strip topped with gorgonzola. I ordered it medium, and it had plenty of pink in it, but wasn't bleeding too much, as I expect for medium. The steak was melt-in-your mouth delicious. The green beans that came with were coated in butter and they were quite tasty. My wife got the steak diane, and she was pleased too. Since we had birthday cake waiting at home, we passed on dessert. The service was good. We didn't have to wait too long for anything, our water glasses were refilled before they were ever empty, and every one was friendly and polite. I can't complain about anything. The only thing that would keep me coming back regularly is the prices. Most cuts of steak were over $30, and most seafood items were over $20. I don't feel that its a rip-off, I know you're gonna pay for a good aged steak, but eating here is a luxury best saved for special occasions - at least for someone of my income. We did have a Living Social deal that made it very affordable for this trip though. We may go back some day for the Early Bird specials, which are much more in my price range (between $15 and $25). read more

An outstanding steakhouse! We will be going back. Don't let the exterior mislead you. I recently read a food critic's review and it enticed me to go and finally try this mysterious steakhouse. I say mysterious because it's located in a windowless building that is attached to a motel/hotel. Weird, but once you are inside it's warm and inviting. We ordered the Steak 38 (for 2) and were more and more impressed with each course. The Steak 38 is a very labor-intensive order for the waitstaff because most of the courses are wheeled out on a cart and prepared/served table side. For us, it was nice to finally have quality and tasty raw oysters which were part of the seafood sampler in the Steak 38. The snapper soup was meaty and very hearty. Our filet was perfectly cooked and could have been sliced with a butter knife. I saved room for the delicious bananas foster. I was hoping it was as good as the dessert I've had countless times while I lived in New Orleans and.... it was perfect! Our waiter was friendly, yet professional. He brought us 2 baskets of bread and 2 plates of their roasted peppers before our meal was served. Our drinks were promptly refilled. The most impressive aspect of the entire meal was the perfect amount of time spaced between each course. We never felt rushed with courses piling up and better yet, we weren't left without something wonderful to eat. This happened years ago and I haven't been back since. I was a regular at the Brigantine one for a few years. I moved to the Cherry Hill area and found that Steak 38 was close by. I decided to take my wife for our anniversary. I called ahead and made a reservation for 9pm. When I arrived, I told the host I had a reservation. I was then told that the kitchen was closed. That's right, closed! No apology, just that the kitchen was shutdown for the night and see you later! Wow. After that I'll never eat there ever again. Not much to say about S38. As always fantastic. I can do a full review but there is really no point as everything there is prepared perfectly. What I will say is (1) get the ceasar salad - it is the real deal with anchovi, egg and good cheese. (2) Oysters.... yes please. (3) as the name implies... get a steak, whether you are a rib roast fan, a NY Strip purist or looking for a more healthy option.. the Filet Mignon (ok healthy is a perspective here ;) (4) P.s. they also make a genuine Manhatan if thats what you like! (5) if you are not a steak or seafood person and find yourself there... 1 word.... DUCK. It is hard to find it prepared well... they managed it. So it's kind of a hidden gem alongside route 38. You can easily overlook the place as its attached to a motel. So looks can be deceiving in this case. We went for a happy hour and they have one hell of a happy hour menu! Great options for great prices. We sat at the bar, which is small yet very nice. Friendly bartender. We started with a glass of wine and a brew; bout 8$ bucks. From there we checked out the happy hour food specials and started off with scallops wrapped with bacon and grilled shrimp. Small servings but for 5$ a pop it was delicious. Moved on to try the mussels. Large serving for 6$ is totally worth it. Another glass of wine and few drinks later we ended it with pork with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe and a cheeseburger and fries. Great size, again very good. Overall this is a great happy hour spot. We will be coming back again. Next time to sit down and dine and give their steaks a try! read more

I have driven by Steak 38 numerous times and always wondered about this restaurant especially since they share a building with a motel on route 38 and believe me the location does not do this steak house justice at all. After reading their reviews we decided to try them out for our anniversary dinner and I must say this spot is truly a hidden gem. We had reservations and upon arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome and were seated immediately. The restaurant is on the smaller side with an old school steak house feel and deco. They also have a guy singing some soft jazz music which was ok but not great. It wasn't long before one of our 2 servers came over and introduced themself and took our drink orders. Once back with our drinks he went over their specials for the night and answered our questions about the menu. We skipped appetizer but the complimentary bread and butter with their delicious marinated peppers was a great start to our meal. For entrees I went all out with the 24 oz ribeye steak ordered medium which came with a side of twice baked potato and green beans. I also added a bowl of their cream of crab soup. My wife went with a 12 oz filet mignon with the twiced baked potatoes and added a side of sauteed spinach. My soup came out first and it was very flavorfoul and creamy with lumps of crab meat. Both our steaks we're cooked to perfection, exactly the way we requested and had a well seasoned seared crust on the outside and full of flavor and juicy on the inside. The twiced baked potatoes and veggies we're also top notch and delicious. Our servers were great and checked on us often making sure everything was to our satisfaction. We were so full after dinner and opted not to get desert. They had a very tempting desert menu with loads of varieties to satisfy any sweet tooth and I'm sure are all delicious as well. Our overall experience at steak 38 was outstanding and totally worth it. A family owned steak house serving delicious food with great service is a thumbs up in my books. My wife and I visited 38 last year. Drinks were amazing, tableside-prepared Caesars were the best we'd ever had, and the steaks and seafood were incredible. We talked about going back and had the opportunity this past weekend. There was a short wait, typical for any restaurant on a Saturday night, but we were welcomed at the bar where Steve (the resident mixologist) crafted some awesome cocktails. After being seated our server visited the table and informed us of that night's specials that sounded way too good to pass up. We ordered a cast iron skillet garlic shrimp as an appetizer and I hunkered down into 20 oz bone in NY strip, my wife had the scallops (a popular mainstay on its vast menu.) Dinner was incredible, just as before. My steak was the perfect shade of pink and my wife raved about her scallops through the entire meal. A new selection of desserts topped off the evening. Personal cheesecakes made in house and a brownie (again made from scratch in house) sundae. We'd already had the legendary bananas foster and we opted for one each of the aforementioned sweets. Wow! Great experience from start to finish. The place does do some good business on the weekends so next time I'm making a reservation. But, even with a packed house, our waiter was attentive, funny and very professional. I urge everyone to give this place a try if you haven't. read more

We have always wanted to stop at this place, after hearing all the rave reviews, so we finally stopped. The nostalgia alone with Frank Sinatra playing in the background and the look and feel of the place told us right away that we were going to love it!! Hopefully the place will keep its look as it brought so many memories back of days gone by. This is a great place for a romantic dinner for young and old. Also a great place for a special family dinner. Loved the fact that you could hear the person sitting near you without hearing everyone else! The food was delicious! Our prime rib perfectly cooked, and the Duck ala Orange tasted awesome. One great thing here is that they will mix your salad , or slice your filet mignon right next your table and serve it to you. It seems that since reopening the interior was updated and freshened up, the atmosphere is cozy & comfortable. The A/C works well so this is a nice reprieve on a hot summer day. Now the food, we had the Calamari to start and while it was cooked correctly, it was over-salted. Then a pear walnut salad with a soft-shell crab app. The crab was very good, as was the salad. The steak was just OK, it could have been the particular cut (I had the NY Strip Au Poivre) as it lacked flavor and was undercooked, I did not complain and was prepared to simply accept it as a 3-star middle of the road meal. A very relaxed atmosphere; laid back, calm, and very sedate - almost like the restaurants and bars of the 60's & 70's. (Reminds me of some of the great places in the Cherry Hill area that have been long gone.) Just visited for the 1st time in over 20 years and was amazed at the quality of the food, the presentation and the overall professionalism of the staff. Nothing was less or shorted in any way, just an overall great experience. The one major surprise when I was there was that Barnacle Ben was there, and he was the one that was making the crab cakes. We had dinner there Saturday night. The food was very good but we had very poor service. We were there almost three hours. We waited 20 minutes just to get water. Then it took 45 more minutes for our salad to come. We ordered wine with our dinner which they brought when we were almost finished eating! When it was time to pay our bill we waited another 20 minutes to get our credit card back. They are definitely understaffed. read more
