I submitted my request via Yelp's submission page and receive a response from StarPower employee "Michele" but the email was signed by "Hunter" which was confusing. I was impressed with the quote and the quick response time and the price seemed reasonable. Per the solar customer guide that is shared with every solar quote, I did some due diligence to confirm that both Hunter and StarPower had the proper licensing as is recommended. To my surprise, I find that the StarPower license on the contractor state license board web page is cancelled and not able to contract. I also notice that Hunter does not have a sales person license either. Just to make sure I understood correctly, I called the CSLB and learned that both the company has to have a license and so does the sales person and if the company is trying to work without a valid license it is a violation. I decided to do a little more investigation on the owner and the company and see that the liability insurance was suspended in January according to the CSLB web page for the cancelled license 560847. The company description says it was founded in 2009 but the company is only started in 2020. This is also very misleading and confusing. The company noted in a response that the license was in transition. This should have been communicated with quote and note that they can't do contracts until it's fixed and license is valid. read more

We were referred to a person who was willing to help us out as a side job. Well, that was a massive mistake!!! Our solar wouldn't work and it was clear that the installation was compromised. Summary: Great team of experts! Better price than other companies! I am so happy that I chose to work with StarPower Systems! They are a small local company that has years of expertise with solar systems. Matthew was very friendly to work with, but more importantly he walked me through my options and explained in detail the system and all of the steps along the way. For those that don't know, Matthew is the owner, who came on site before we had a contract and eventually came with a team to do the installation. If you have loads of questions and want to understand a lot of the technical details of your solar situation, then you will love working with Matthew. I also had a great experience working with Hunter and Michele. Michele made it easy to understand the next steps in the process and worked with me to schedule an install date. Before choosing StarPower Systems, I spoke with several other (larger) companies. With the other companies, I only talked with sales reps and was usually required to sign a contract before getting a technician to come out. I'm not saying this was a bad experience, in fact most of the sales reps were friendly to talk to. However, my overall experience with StarPower Systems was great from the start. In defense to Matthew Master Electrician in business since 1989, I met him in the recent 2 weeks and largely his issues are with staffing. Being in Silicon Valley and have been an HR professional in the valley growing tech companies where it's tough to get good help, Matthew was transparent about his challenges in this area. He is not the only one having to deal with the demand and trying to get help in answering calls and emails who may not have been registered with CSLB able to sell solar. Even though a company might be licensed with C-10 or C46, some of the sales people who call are not registered to sell! Check them out before engaging! However, I believe Matthew does good work given the additional help. He is a hands on owner who is forthright, transparent and honest in his dealings. His pricing is very fair. Most of all he is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the wattage and intricacies of each module to produce power. Not sure happened with this administrative hiccup with the CSLB but, I suspect this is also related to not able to hire enough people to help him. I wish him the best with his business because deep down I believe he wants to deliver quality, reliable and efficient solar systems. read more

My panels were not generating electricity. The original company that did the installation in 2004 is phasing out. I did got the technician to come out and diagnose the problem. The inverters need to be replaced and there were no remote monitoring capabilities. Michele from StarPower Systems were wonderful and pinged me about my request. I emailed her the diagnosis and she got me the quote to replace and install the inverter. Matt came and took care of everything in 3 hours. Initial: We had contacted many solar installation companies and they all said they couldn't help us out because the home was three stories. Matt reached out to us and thoroughly checked if the project was doable. He went over many details about solar and walked us through what would be done. Next step: quote, required documents, and scheduled installation. We bought Solar for our home with a battery back up in 2019 from PetersenDean/Solar4America. Systems worked great until June 2021 when the battery failed during a power outage. Matt was very responsive to my inquiry for a solar reinstall after a reroof job. This was a challenging project because he had to pick up the incompleted work of another contractor with whom I had to let go, for reasons that are a whole other story. The challenging aspect of the job was figuring out what parts were missing, how the original installation was put together etc. but it was tackled with success. He and his crew worked hard to get this job done right. My only criticisms are that it took a few weeks to get a final invoice and that I was ghosted on my communication with Matt about a service panel upgrade and EV charger wiring he was going to do for me. I guess he got busy and didn't want the job but it would have been appreciated if he let me know that. All in all though, the solar reinstall was performed competently and priced fairly. StarPower just completed a new installation on my house in Sunnyvale, which included a main panel upgrade, 6kW of solar, and a 16kWh battery. They did excellent work and I'm very happy with the result. I got a bid from them because of a strong word-of-mouth recommendation. The other two bids I got were from big companies who sent out a person whose only job is sales. They had flashy brochures and presentations, but their sales people clearly had pretty shallow knowledge. With StarPower, I got a visit from the owner, whose expertise was manifest, and who talked to me about what I needed rather than about what he wanted to sell. It would have been a no-brainer decision even if his bid hadn't turned out to be much lower than the others. (I guess those big companies have to pay for those flashy brochures and sales people somehow....) I will admit that my confidence in my choice dipped a bit during the five months between when I signed the contract and when the installation work began. Everybody and their brother was trying to get solar projects done because of the imminent NEM regulatory change, and getting the permits took a long time. Most of the delay wasn't under their control. I would have appreciated being kept better informed of what was going on behind the scenes, but that doesn't dim my appreciation for the end result. Once the work started, everything was handled superbly. The installation took six days of work for the owner and his two, sometimes three helpers. Two things impressed me in particular. First, two of his helpers were clearly new to the work, and he wasn't just pushing them for grunt labor; he was training them, and diligently supervising them, on how to do the work to very high standards. Honestly, I learned quite a bit just watching them. (I know, professionals hate having amateurs hovering over them. But it was fascinating.) The other impressive thing was the attention to detail, not only of functionality but also of appearance. Getting every component leveled just right, painting all of the conduits, running wires under the house instead of along the walls, taking good care of the easily-damaged metal tile roof: all indicators of strong professional integrity. They even repaired some minor damage caused by the power company that wasn't their fault. The city inspection found only a couple of trivial items, which were quickly addressed. There were no hidden surprises or extra costs. For any sort of home contracting work, I believe you always get the best results from the small businesses where the owner is the expert and is hands-on with the job. STARPOWER SOLAR ACCOMPLISHED THE ELUSIVE "INVISIBLE SOLAR" ON MY HOME! We decided we wanted Solar before NEMS2 expired. We did a lot of research and got a handful of quotes from the Costco and other big guys to several local companies. First of all StarPower led by Matt are Solar Geeks and so you can have a very detailed and technical discussion about your solar requirements. Matt was the only company to tell me about the panels he used, how they were premium panels manufactured in Singapore, not China, their warranty, and even he can tell you about the mounting system he uses. Along with working through the math with me planning just the right number of panels to offset my power bill, he also had the best price by a good margin on a system for the same capacity amongst the quotes I got. But the REAL CHALLENGE WAS my wife does not like how Solar looks on a home so he requirement was "do whatever you want as long as nothing you do can be seen". This is why I had been putting off Solar for so long as wife thinks it's "ugly". So I put this to the vendors. Luckily I had several roof placement options but only Matt took this requirement seriously and he went to some trouble to use parts of my roof where the panels could not be seen anywhere from below even though some prime and easy roof visible roof area was the easy first choice. He used other parts of the roof, and He used a conduit route which he painted the house and roof color, and bent them all around to be hidden, and there were no externally visible boxes all. And even when we could see even a small corner of a panel they came back and adjusted it until we gave the OK. So I got the ELUSIVE "INVISIBLE SOLAR" ON MY HOME! I know everyone accepts Solar panels and equipment all on the side of your house but we love even more having Solar and not being able to see anything! Happy Wife! As to the functionality, the Solar system generates exactly what we forecast and my PG&E offset is coming in with +/- dollars. So we nailed it. The whole StarPower process was excellent with the whole team from quote to site visit to plans, approvals, permits, and PG&E process.
