We have had an Enphase solar installation for 10 years now, which has always worked beautifully. However, due to regular PG&E outages in our area (Fremont, CA), we decided to add a backup battery to the system. After careful research, we chose Highlight Solar (HS) to handle this installation. We chose the Franklin battery, and Highlight Solar came out to handle the installation in Nov 2025. Sadly, we had some serious issues with the functionality of our solar infrastructure, after the Franklin equipment was installed... the Enphase solar monitoring device (called Envoy) started having trouble communicating with the panels, and therefore would disable them. HS made a couple of different attempts to fix this issue (which was delayed when they went on vacation for a month), so I had to keep cycling the breaker for the panels every morning to get the system working for another day. Fortunately, they were persistent in pursuing the issue, and after returning from vacation in late January, Samir came out and spent a couple of hours on the phone with Enphase support, who suggested a possible solution for this issue. HS then had someone come out to implement Enphase's suggestion, and now my system is working solidly and reliably (Feb 2026). I'm glad HS didn't just give up on us; I'm sure they were just as frustrated as we were by this situation. We certainly didn't expect this to take three months to resolve, but it is working now. read more

We met with multiple solar companies and settled on Highlight due to both the great recommendations as well as our experience during the initial process. We asked a LOT of questions, then we asked more, and then some more. Ali, our salesman, remained patient and communicated thoroughly via email or phone, and at all hours even after we had signed the paperwork. The installation process was honestly better than the sales process. The combination of Chris (the foreman who found a solution for all our requests) and his team which worked in awful weather to get our project installed on schedule were amazing. Our inspection, and final handoff were handled by Samir, who answered even more questions, and made sure we were fully set up. From end to end we had a great experience with Highlight Solar and will recommend them as they were to us. Pro tips: If you get a battery you will need to store it until it is installed. Your solar data might not show up on the app for 24-48 hours after installation...don't panic, it will show up eventually and you will see the money you are not spending with PG&E. read more

Bottom Line: Their quotes were incomplete, misleading and likely fraudulent, and they expressed no regret for their behavior. Highlight Solar quoted me for a solar panel installation on a flat garage roof, and it was pretty competitive. I only found out later that it was missing two essential and expensive items. It was only when I asked about the roof warranty, that they told me that I'd need to separately hire a roofer to seal the holes that they make in the roof when installing. I also enquired about trenching, to run the electrical line from my garage to my house (another contractor had quoted and said that this would be an extra charge). No response, and only when I asked one or two more times did he admit that this would also be an extra cost. I finally got contractors for the roofing and trenching, and got an updated quote, but something was a bit off, and when I talked with him again, it turns out that the predicted power output of the solar system was completely off. He was quoting me the output of the new solar *plus* a set of twice as many panels that I had installed with a different contractor many years ago. This to me was outright fraudulent. I twice emailed the owner of the company to alert him to this behavior by his sales person, and both replies were polite and informative, but he completely ignored the fact that I was being given misleading and possibly fraudulent information. I know Yelp is full of reviews by the minority of unhappy customers of otherwise fine companies, and you need to take them with a grain of salt. But the fact that the owner of the company wouldn't admit that there was anything wrong about quoting me entirely incorrect numbers, that for me is unacceptable. read more

They also did me a favor by selling at a very good price some additional panels I needed for a different project. The Highlight team's customer service and attitude that the customer is always right stands out. When we had a disagreement over fees, they waived their portion. I'm having an issue with power reporting from my solar system. I can tell because the last few months, my PG&E credit is much lower than previous years. The panel and inverters have a warranty of 25 years, but after only 11 years I'm having issues. I contacted them repeatedly for months but they never found out the issue. They frequently ask the same questions to me ("did you check your breakers?") but don't fix my issue. Really unhappy with the support here. read more

The main consideration for having solar panels installed on our house was to get everything installed before the end of the year in order to take advantage of the federal tax credit for solar installations. In order to qualify for the credit, the solar has to be installed, inspected and in operation before the end of the year. I knew that there were lots of people who would rush to have their solar done during this period, and just hoped they would be able to finish in time. Long story short - Highlight Solar came through! They scheduled the install of everything (solar panels and Power Wall) for December 1, which I thought was cutting it close, since PG&E and the city (San Carlos) have to get involved. In response to my bugging them for the earliest time, they actually came the Friday before (Black Friday), and did almost the entire installation that day. They worked all day and they were still up there when it got dark. The highlight solar team did a great job and finished the install the next morning. They are working very hard to get everyone's solar in before the deadline. The inspection was scheduled for the 10th and it passed with no issues. We connected to the Power Wall and now I am able to monitor the entire system from my phone. I would definitely recommend Highlight Solar, and will use them if I decide to expand my system in the future. read more

10 years later review... it's not good. The panels that were installed started failing. First one failed, which they replaced after a lot of haggling over replacement. Then now two more panels failed (see picture). I will admit, they were responsive previously when they were smaller (see my previous reviews) but now they have gotten too big to bother. They started ghosting me because I am a customer that no longer makes them money even though I was one of the original customers that helped build their business. Unfortunately, tehse guys are like most businesses, once they got your money, they're done with you. They ghosted me when I inquired about extending the system. I ignored it and chalked it up to NEM2 expiration madness. But now they have ghosted me on warranty work. I'm sure they will reply eventually in a few weeks like they did last time. I will have to find another installer to do the replacement work. These guys will charge you $450 for labor for warranty work which if you think about it, 20 panels x 450 is $9000. Because 3 out of 20 already failed so I don't trust the components they sold. I can see spending $9000 eventually (once per replacement and I expect them to fail at different times and not at one time) . if they ever decide to respond to my inquiry and fulfill their warranty promise. Update: Owner finally replied to me, but not regarding my warranty request but because of this review. He accused me of spreading lies. If he thinks I'm a liar that means my previous positive reviews were lies too. read more

He was friendly, informative (explaining steps taken and answering all my questions) and professional. He completed his assessment and did what he could to address the issue. I expect that system output data over the next few days will provide information or whether he fixed the issue or a new micro-inverter is needed. Our primary contact Mohamed did an excellent job in follow through from the beginning to finish; from getting the city permit to start, and to communicating with PGE to get the battery interconnect agreement signed after installation. Highlight Solar installed some additional solar panels in 2020, and we had a great experience. So when we replaced our roof, we worked with them to remove the existing solar panels (including 17 panels installed in 2008 by another company), put the 2020 panels back up and install 17 new panels plus a battery. We also just had a new heat pump installed and the new roof insultates less well than the old one. So there were a lot of issues to take into consideration to design the new system. Ali designed a system that is well-sized for our use. It generates enough power on sunny days to make up for our power use at night, in the winter, and on cloudy days. These systems are complicated, and there were several glitches between software and hardware, but Highlight Solar staff had great communication and persisted until everything worked like clockwork. They worked with us closely around the roof replacement, and everyone who came to work on various components were pleasant and highly capable. You need smart, capable, trustworthy people to install a high-quality solar system. I highly recommend Highlight Solar as meeting a high bar. Highlight Solar responded quickly. In the actual follow-up Zoom discussion, Ali did not answer my questions, but kept talking in generalities. With a battery and solar panels, he had indicated these will reduce my average monthly bill (about $300) by 85%. If you do the math, my new bill should be about $45. Coincidental, this was the same projected amount ($45) from 2 other competitors. The proposal presented by Ali was about $96. He explained the difference because this was an estimate. The Offset was calculated to be at 96%. The other quotes I received were at 109% and 111%. A quick Google search says this should be between 105% to 110%. Ali's says different companies have different software in calculating. read more

This company does not have proper licensing. The salesman needs a license and it must be connected to the company. My review is not hasty because the sales person has to be on company license listing as well and that is where I look. Please see attached photo because he cannot sell for this company if is not connected to Highlight Solar license. The CSLB says that HIS licenses are required and it does not look like this company has any HIS license connected and never has. The process is formal and includes background check and finger printing. I looked at their license on the CSLB and the company has no licensed sales person listed or associated with the company. Then he tried to sell me a battery a couple times even though I did not ask for it. How can he legally sell a battery and solar for this company if he does not have a license associated? This a CA state requirement according to the state licensing board and they are in violation. Be very careful and do your due diligence and read the solar customer guide! We did a lot of diligence and met with more than five solar companies before deciding to go with Highlight Solar. They were thorough and answered all of our questions and came in with a very competitive price. My only caveat (and the reason I can only give four stars at the moment) is that we're still only in the early stages. We signed the contract and are awaiting the design. Our installation is likely not until early May 2022 (although with high quality solar companies, I get the impression that they are pretty booked). One thing that I liked about Highlight Solar is that their own employees do the installation work. We were wary of companies that were simply hiring contractors en masse to do installation work because of the potential for uneven quality of workmanship. All that being said, we'll have to give an updated final review once this process (design, installation, permitting, etc.) has been completed so that we can assess how well the company communicated with us, followed through on their promises, etc. read more

5 years ago Highlight Solar installed panels on my roof. They did a decent job, particularly as that happened during the pandemic. However recently Solar Edge - the inventor's manufacturer, told me the "prepaid" time on the inverter's cellular modem is over and I have to pay a fee to enable monitoring. I know the inverter has an Ethernet port and I requested a quote from Highlight Solar to enable that port. I got a call back, asking for my email and promising a quote the next day. Nothing since that (and it's been more than a month), despite me sending them reminders and asking for the quote. I'm just happy I found how they support their customers before I made a decision on my solar farm expansion. IDK what company will work on that, I just know that isn't going to be Highlight Solar. 3 stars because of their work 5 years ago, would be 1 star or less otherwise - for hassle and time loss. read more

We just got a solar battery consultation with AlexB and he was a honest and good guy to speak to about getting a solar battery backup unit. He was someone that could talk to us on our level. We have been contemplating on getting one installed with our solar panels but being in the Bay Area and only random blackouts, it makes sense to just get a good generator for the main uses like the frig, a few lights and our modem for Wi-Fi. We have to be connected to the outside world somehow!! Hahaha...Being in the Bay Area and prices of living here, has everyone strapped but our purchases have to make sense. I have to give it to Alex that he gave us ideas what we could do if we didn't have the backup battery to help during the blackout. That is what a good consultant does! They help!! I got enphase inverters and q cell panels (19) installed around 8 months ago. Samir was amazing to work with right from the start. He is a delightful person to work with. We got the most competitive rates in the market at the time. The install went smoothly and I was producing a peak of 5.6 kw in no time. I had no headache on the permitting side as well. I always look for genuine people to work with, folks that I can think of as my friends and throughout the time since my install, I have found folks at highlight solar have been always available and easy to reach. There was an incident recently because of which one of the panels was not performing optimally. Dean was very responsive and sent his crew to investigate the situation the same day. 2 weeks in and one the low performing panels has been replaced. I wish Dean, Samir, Chris, and Sam the best. I highly, highly recommend Highlight Solar. I shopped around for months/weeks in trying to hire a reliable company that carries the best brands (i chose the newest and most reliable REC 420w alpha-pure model). and offer the best prices and warranty. I received several offers from the best local businesses that were recommended on yelp as well as Tesla (online solar application). In the end, I chose Highlight. I wanted a large, custom-designed system that Tesla was unable to provide me. Tesla is very strict in their design and wont maximize my roof surface area that other local companies could. Tesla also installs lesser-quality panels (hanwha 400w QCells) that most customers wont know until they are unloaded from their trucks. Im willing to bet that their customers think they are getting "tesla" solar panels. Be forewarned if you are not aware of this. I wanted a large 13+ kw system and two powerwall 3s and tesla could only design me a maximum 8kw system, nothing more. I declined and got my online deposit back. Sunrun quoted me 40% more than Highlight for the same exact design for 13kw. San Jose Clean Solar's quote was 20% more. YES in Livermore was close but still more than Highlight. It was a no brainer, i chose Highlight and it was the best decision ever. I received my initial consultation from Ali. He is very knowledgeable and understands what the customer needs are. I locked in a very, very reasonable contract with him in May. I thought I had to wait a long time for my install given how recent the Powerwall 3 was just released (Tesla said delivery time is 3-4 weeks and perhaps more) and other local installers told me their wait is 8-12 weeks out. But nope, the owner Dean worked his magic and was able to get me my two powerwall 3s in 2 days! I got the install crew led by Nick on my roof 2 weeks after signing my contract. Nick and the install crew was very meticulous and easy to work with. My roof install came out clean with no damage to my tiles. Dean is super responsive, knowledgeable, friendly and professional. Whenever i had a question, i was able to send him a text and receive a reply within minutes. I dont think you can get that from Tesla or other companies; much less so from the Boss. The technical lead who oversaw my complete install was Samir. I received nothing but 5-star service from him. He came out to ensure everything was working correctly, even in the recent 105 degree heatwave. Samir knows the products well and was able to get the system running in no time. Sam took care of all the paperwork, inspections, and logistics. Sam was very dedicated to the project and extremely helpful in every step of the process. As of today, August 2021 everything is still working great...excellent job the first time!! No rework required! My electric bill is around $25 instead of $600+ (pool pump, sweep and air conditioner). Their installers very good and very fast. Highlight Solar took care all the necessary paperwork( permit and signing up with PG&E) to be legal for your city and be "in the system" with PG&E.
