I started shopping for solar with Tesla. They were not flexible with custom requests after system design. I chose Cobalt Power Systems instead. I contracted them for a 12.78 kW solar array and two Tesla Powerwalls. Cobalt completed the project on time and exactly per the contract. The installation crew was excellent. I chose Cobalt for their flexibility on panel and Powerwall placement. I also liked the equipment they provided. They used 30 Maxeon Solar Technologies panels. These panels are superior. They carry an industry-leading 40-year product and performance warranty. This warranty is significantly longer than the typical 25-year standard. I paid a premium price for this quality. The system designer made great recommendations on the size of my array and using Powerwalls versus expansion packs. My main issue was communication. It was difficult to reach the Project Manager regarding the installation start date and follow-up questions. Once contact was established, they provided the needed information quickly. I recommend them for their professional designer, installation team, and quality equipment. Be prepared for slow communication from the Project Manager about the start date. A final update: We are nearing the end of our "solar journey" after a few final hiccups, but I think I can stick a fork in this review. Cobalt managed to install the panels and batteries in a single day (12/13), hitting the critical year-end tax credit deadline. While I was told they were juggling 14 jobs that day, the "all-hands-on-deck" effort was impressive. However, I wasn't told until afterward that it would take another 5-7 weeks for PG&E to replace the meter collar (the "BUS install"). Since this is a prerequisite for PowerWall 3 systems to feed power back into the panel, my system sat in standby mode for over a month waiting for a five-minute PG&E visit. While the utility's timeline is outside Cobalt's control, it did take the wind out of my sails, so to speak. Regarding the pre-install process, the experience shifted once I voiced "strong concerns" via a Yelp review and my sales rep. Following that, I received true white-glove service; dates stopped slipping, and check-ins became frequent. This proved critical when my PowerWall 3 failed and required an RMA just before the PG&E visit. To Cobalt's credit, they handled the replacement swiftly, finishing with literally hours to spare before the PG&E tech arrived. In summary, Cobalt performed as well as could be expected given the 2025 constraints--specifically the inventory shortages and the installation rush triggered by expiring tax credits. The on-site work itself has been top-notch; the workmanship is clean and the field staff were professional. However, internal communication needs an overhaul. I only achieved a reasonable level of responsiveness after capturing the attention of the CEO and COO. Furthermore, there are simply too many points of contact, which requires the customer to guess who handles what. In hindsight, I'd recommend keeping a direct line to your salesperson; working solely through the overworked project managers was often an exercise in frustration, as emails and calls frequently went unanswered. Once you connect with the right people, the service is excellent. After my installation, I was placed in the hands of Alex H., a Field Technician Manager. He acted as the "closing pitcher"--responsive, communicative, and dedicated to seeing the final details through to completion. read more

Paid more for Cobalt because they promised better service. Huge mistake. Their designer did not even inspect the roof properly at first, which led to rework and permit resubmission. Project managers kept changing, communication was chaotic, and I had to chase them constantly. I sent 71 emails between October 2025 and May 9, 2026, just to keep things moving. After installation, they did not even provide a proper walkthrough. The designer offered only a "courtesy" Zoom, then no-showed twice. Overpriced and badly managed. Do not trust the marketing pitch. TL/DR-Stay far, far away We evaluated 3 companies for a solar project. Decided to use Cobalt in July 2025 and we regret the decision greatly. We were told by our salesperson that our job would start 2-3 months after signing the contract. The contract itself estimated that work would commence September 8th and finish on November 8th, in plenty of time for the expiring tax incentives. Permits were issued by the end of August and things spiraled from there. I received a call from the PM in early October (3 weels after the estimated start date) indicating that work would start in 2-3 weeks. Come October 28th nothing had been communicated. I reached out to the PM only to learn that she had left the company and no replacement was provided, leaving us in a black hole. The salesperson and GM (who has responded to many reviews on this site) were unresponsive to an email that I left asking for an update. It took me reaching out to the person who recommended Cobalt to get things back on track via that salesperson. Initial installation was ultimately finished in late November, but the battery was DOA. We asked a number of times for an update on the battery replacement and never received a timeframe, only that it could take about 2 weeks. Ultimately, we were scheduled for a final inspection with the city and we told the Cobalt team that we would not go through with the inspection until a replacement battery was provided. To his credit, Alex (who was quite helpful once he was engaged) was able to go to his warehouse and get a battery that was labeled for somebody else, get it on a truck, and we had a working battery by the end of that day. Had me wondering why that couldn't have been done in late November instead of mid-January. In terms of inspections, the electrical work was fine from the city's perspective, but the fire department said that there should be another shutoff mechanism that needed to be installed before they could sign off, adding to the delays and finalization of the project. The communication problems were evident from the time our PM left. We were surprised on 2 mornings when Cobalt showed up with no warning to do some drywall patching one day and an inspection on the other occasion. The crew members were super polite and did quality work, but it doesn't take away the bitter taste left from a botched install and incredibly poor communication. Do we have solar? Yes, and it's working like expected. Would I use Cobalt again or recommend them? Strong "no" based on their incredibly poor communication (both internal and external) and inability to live up to their initial estimated timeline. read more

Although I LOVE Tesla Powerwall's design and engineering, trying to work with them to add a PW3 to our solar setup (really a necessity under NEM3 with PGE) was as complete and utter a catastrophe as I have ever had with any contractor of any kind anywhere. I wound up with really no choice but to fire them which I did. Then.... Enter Rebecca, system designer from Cobalt Power - she went way out of her way to help solve all the "problems" Tesla's team had created out of thin air. I wanted the system in our garage (Tesla wrongly said disallowed by code) and I wanted the 'whole home backup" using the recently released "meter collar" backup switch designed by Tesla and approved by PGE - Tesla said our panel did not "qualify". Whereas Tesla said both of these were not possible, they would not allow me to communicate with the person (unnamed and far away) who was making these silly decisions. Rebecca came to the house to see everything for herself and then brought their technical lead (Stuart) - together they Madde good things happen! Soon we agreed on a system of 1 PW3 and 1 expansion pack IN GARAGE and with the METER COLLAR. Yesterday it passed final inspection and was placed in service. Alex and Isaac were critical in problem solving to make for a successful inspection. Thank you Cobalt Power, all of those named above and many others. Save yourself the hassle - go FIRST to Cobalt, not LAST as I did. They are not the cheapest out there (significantly more than Tesla would have charged) but this is an area where you absolutely need quality and Cobalt has it. Constructive suggestion: Although 2025 was wildly busy due to the expiration of tax credits, Cobalt really needs to up their game on communication when your project is finally designed and handed to Project Management. I've worked with Cobalt on 2 different projects... 1) solar panel installation in 2020, and 2) powerwall installation in 2025. The first project went extremely well. Although they were high priced, they had excellent personnel and executed the project well. The handled all of the install and compliance and interface with PG&E, and were good at communicating and setting expectations. On the 2025 powerwall project however, they've done exceedingly poorly. I had 2 different project managers and it was consistently unclear who the point of contact was. They promised a 3-4 month install such that I could take advantage of a $7.5K PG&E rebate, only to have the project drag to 10 months which made me miss the rebate. They messed up on the fire marshal regulations several times and had to come out 3 different occasions to try and get the necessary signage. They were incompetent and unapologetic (except for Alex) about the issue. And, as I escalated their misses, they did not take accountability, nor really apologize. Cobalt installed solar panels and a battery backup system for our home and they did an excellent job. We got estimates from several companies, but our decision was based on Jisang, their system designer, and how he spent a lot of time educating us on the pluses and minuses of a solar solution and a clear explanation of the costs and value. Jisang communicated he was the escalation point if there were any questions and issues, and he was always a text or phone call away to handle anything. Our installation lead, Gyani, and his team were also excellent. Gyani is a very good communicator and made sure we were aware of what the status was with the installation. We have gone though several remodels or other home projects and there's always something, this project went very smoothly and the adjustments were easy handled. Cobalt has different teams review and test the system and it makes for a longer implementation duration, but it provides a higher level of confidence. Our solar solution actually got tested real time a few days after we had sign off when PG&E had 3 outages in the week and we didn't even notice it happened except for the phone app alert of the switch to power backup. This is a great company. In searching for solar providers, I was drawn to their 5 star reviews vs other similarly rated companies in the area. My initial engagement was centered around Sunrun, as I got seduced by their Costco kiosk. After much research, I quickly learned Sunpower and owning panels was much better... As I was trying to sort through options, I read Cobalt's reviews and stumbled upon some amazing reviews for the legendary Jisang Youn...so I was excited about the company. On my first call, I got lucky and the man, myth, legend picked up. Right off the bat, he was brutally honest about how my house was overshaded by trees and probably not a great solar project....very different than everyone else who tried to sell us on solar! So scored points right away. He mentioned they probably shouldn't waste our time by coming by to estimate, again scoring points. However, after he could tell I really wanted him to come by and once he got a sense of how much electricity we use, he was completely on board. Jisang was very smart, honest, and managed expectations throughout the process...also I could tell he wasn't trying to maximize profits, but trying to find the best cost efficiency in his recommendations. He also could handle my billion questions time and time again, and even took time to reach out after hours when he was super busy. He also was super knowledgeable about NEM 2 and helped us navigate the timelines super effectively. Lastly, this company is awesome because everyone that came through to our house was very customer focused and smart....and even more impressive is their value on diversity as the team was comprised of a diverse group of minorities.... In 2022 we had Cobalt Power Systems install a rooftop solar array on our home. We were very pleased with that job, so when we decided to install battery backup in 2025, we went right back to Cobalt to do that job for us too. Due to the problems with the availability of Powerwalls, the time span of the process was longer than we would have liked, but we were told that was going to be a problem going in. Once they were able to obtain the hardware for our job, the installation went smoothly, and everything seems to be working properly. In the end, the project was completed on time, so my hat goes off to Cobalt for their professionalism on both jobs. Having said that, there are couple of things that I think could be improved upon. First, I wish Cobalt had a single point of contact for all aspects of the job, and secondly, I think communication with the customer could be improved upon. That might have been handled better if there was one person who had the responsibility of keeping in touch with the customer on a regular basis, I think perhaps semi-monthly would have been great. Because the Powerwall project dragged on for several months, we were naturally curious at various intervals as to the progress, so I think Cobalt could have done better when it came to keeping us informed of exactly where we were in the overall process. Cobalt Power Systems supplied and installed 20 solar panels on our roof. They did an excellent job at every stage. The estimator listened carefully to what we wanted, and made suggestions to fine tune this. The installation crew had a couple of days where the heavy rain in early 2023 stopped work. The crew tried to complete as much as possible of the indoor work on those days. They came when they said they would, and got on with the job. Cobalt sent along their own inspector to review the completed job, before the city inspector. Everything went smoothly. Solar installations cost real money (some of which you may get back in a tax rebate). I felt Cobalt Power Systems did an outstanding job, and were well worth the money. Highly recommended. The communication, documentation and on-site installation were all excellent; there were a few glitches here and there, as would be expected, but Cobalt handled everything professionally and thoroughly. I just finished a third round of Solar PV installation with Cobalt Power Systems. Every time was impressive. In 2010, I installed a PV system of 40 SunPower panels. That went very well, and the system performed better than predicted. In 2016, I added 44 LG PV panels which brought my power production to cover 100% of my electric bill, which has been zero since 2016. Both installations went extremely well. Based on my past experience with Cobalt, I went with them again this year to install a Tesla Powerwall System of 3 units to help me ride through the predicted PG&E issues in the bay area. I got about 4 different estimates from different companies. Cobalt was the highest bid, but I went with them anyway. I'm glad I did. Why? As an electrical engineer myself, I am continually impressed with their engineering. The other companies, not so much. I heard from one of the other companies that I would have to trench a new main line to power my whole house with a battery storage system at the EXTRA cost of $30,000-$50,000. Wrong! I had a recommendation from a friend of a company that installed his Tesla Powerwall who later rescinded his recommendation, based on a job that had to be redone to get it right. Cobalt's engineering has always produced a proposal that needed no "change orders" or things that were left out. They are true professionals. In 2016 and this year, my sales engineer was Drew Johnson. He gave me a quote which included detailed design specs that made sense. They told me they were backed up and couldn't begin until August. In May, Drew called me and said they had an opening, would we like to start. And they did. And they finished. No surprises. Everything went smoothly. The only delays were from city and PG&E inspectors. Their install team showed up on time every day. They worked hard and got the system in and it is performing flawlessly. They also painted all the equipment to match our house so it is not only functional but cosmetically consistent with our home. I have to also thank Ricardo Mercado who was the project manager of the installation and his team and Tatiana Hamo who made sure that all the compliance papers were filed correctly with PG&E and the city of Saratoga so that everything was compliant and that I would be getting all my tax credits and SGIP rebates from PG&E. If you want to be confident in a good engineering job without surprises from a team of pros, I highly recommend Cobalt Power Systems. read more

Everything went perfectly - from the initial discussions, to the system planning, communication, installation, and follow up. Jonathan and his team did a phenomenal job and left the job site clean and tidy. It was clear that safety was also a priority for him and his crew. Due to the close spatial locality of the gas meter to the main electrical panel of our home, the electrical work was actually fairly complicated but Cobalt handled it with ease and ensured everything was to code. The city performed an inspection and signed off immediately the first time. October 19, 2023 Cobalt Power Systems recently completed an 8.64 KW system with 21 Sunpower panels and two Powerwall-2 batteries. We were especially interested in protection from power outages for AC and essential medical equipment. Kurt Newick, System Designer, answered all of our questions and designed the system according to our needs. He made sure that our project started before the end of NET 2 metering. Since installation 3 months ago, our home has operated at 100% solar, which we expect will diminish somewhat over the winter. Full disclosure--we haven't yet done business with Cobalt, but I wanted to give feedback regarding the initial "sales call" we had with them. We dealt with a system designer / sales guy named Jee Song (sorry if the spelling is wrong!) As a recently-retired mechanical / electronic engineer with 40 years experience I can't say enough about how much I appreciated Jee Song's clear communication, candor and willingness and ability to discuss specific system details. We talked about our current electric bill (which it turns out is pretty low already), how much usage would likely change if we added AC or got one type of electric vehicle versus another type, what are the ins and outs of installing battery storage, etc. We have plenty of detailed info for me to punch the numbers for various scenarios. It may well be that we decide that solar is not an appropriate investment for us right now, but after our informative, no pressure, no BS discussion with Jee Song we will definitely go with Cobalt if and when we decide to pull the trigger. read more

All of them were great to work with and my wife and I recommend them unreservedly! Our system has 26 SunPower PV panels and 3 Powerwalls and functions as Nathan described it would. They answered all my questions before and during the installation. The crew that did the installation was timely, considerate, knowledgeable, and went the "extra mile" to make sure that it looks good on our house. Specifically, the panels on the roof are nicely aligned and below the roof ridgeline and they ran the wiring/conduit to the Powerwalls and other boxes inside the crawl space so the side of the house looks very "clean." There was a small delay due to PG&E scheduling. Also, the SGIP rebate process is taking a lot of back and forth with PG&E. I'm really glad they are handling all these details (I have heard that some other solar installers leave it all up to the homeowner). This is one of those situations where I wish there was a zero star option. Our experience with Cobalt has been awful. They are incredibly disorganized, with 15 people on every email for a pretty simple solar install. We are finishing our installation about 9 months late. Every step of the way they failed to communicate with us about next steps, and my husband or I would need to reach out to them and project manage them. I would never use this company again, nor recommend them to anyone. read more

I needed an upgrade on my 15 year old solar system which was costing more in PG&E true up costs than I was saving in electricity! I called around for a new system but nobody would touch old work...and I needed a new roof to boot! Nobody would help me, not even Tesla. Long story short, Cobalt stepped in, agreed to take off the old panels, work with the roofer to install updated anchor pads for the new panels before a new roof was laid, came back a month later and installed new solar panels. The crew was on the ball, respectful of my property and worked safely on the two story house. The new panels were 5 times the output of my old system and now no more PG%E true up baloney!
