Cobalt Power Systems installed solar panels at my house and also upgraded the main electrical panel to 200 amps. Everyone who worked on my project were knowledgeable, skilled and very professional in their communications. All of the work was done with the highest quality and we passed inspections with no issues raised. They even accommodated a big change to the CAD design without raising any objections. We also got a fair price on the installation. My only concern would be a lack of communication after the solar panels were installed. We could have likely had the system go online sooner if folks had coordinated better. read more

I used Cobalt Power Systems to install my solar panels on my house right before the change from NEM 2.0 to NEM 3.0. Jisang was the person who came out to inspect the house and provide advice on the configuration and setup. Everyone at the Cobalt team was super professional, good at communication, timely, and very responsive. I'm super happy with the job they did from permit application, getting the PG&E application in, solar panel installation, to getting the system turned on and receiving PG&E Permission to Operate. If you are looking for a solar panel operator I would definitely recommend them. read more

Cobalt just finished our installation a couple weeks ago and we are delighted with the results. Nathan Porter was our system designer, Vince Valencia managed the installation, Tatiana coordinated all the PG&E and town inspection details, and Taylor and his team actually installed the hardware. All of them were great to work with and my wife and I recommend them unreservedly! Our system has 26 SunPower PV panels and 3 Powerwalls and functions as Nathan described it would. They answered all my questions before and during the installation. The crew that did the installation was timely, considerate, knowledgeable, and went the "extra mile" to make sure that it looks good on our house. Specifically, the panels on the roof are nicely aligned and below the roof ridgeline and they ran the wiring/conduit to the Powerwalls and other boxes inside the crawl space so the side of the house looks very "clean." There was a small delay due to PG&E scheduling. Also, the SGIP rebate process is taking a lot of back and forth with PG&E. I'm really glad they are handling all these details (I have heard that some other solar installers leave it all up to the homeowner). If you want solar and battery storage, Cobalt is the best in the Bay Area! read more

This is one of those situations where I wish there was a zero star option. Our experience with Cobalt has been awful. They are incredibly disorganized, with 15 people on every email for a pretty simple solar install. We are finishing our installation about 9 months late. Every step of the way they failed to communicate with us about next steps, and my husband or I would need to reach out to them and project manage them. I would never use this company again, nor recommend them to anyone. read more

We have been thinking to install solar for sometime, but didn't do it concerning it's validation and issues along with roof maintenences. Our house was having a new roof late last year. We start shopping for solar, talked to number of people and we chose Cobalt because Jisang and the solar plan he presented to us. He is very professional, easy to reach and come to site to inpect before putting the plan together. Then he guide us through everysteps with his team to make sure we are well taken cared. From signing up to completely installed and functional, his team is there to handle everything. What a great experience we had and definitely recommend them wholeheartedly. read more

I needed an upgrade on my 15 year old solar system which was costing more in PG&E true up costs than I was saving in electricity! I called around for a new system but nobody would touch old work...and I needed a new roof to boot! Nobody would help me, not even Tesla. Long story short, Cobalt stepped in, agreed to take off the old panels, work with the roofer to install updated anchor pads for the new panels before a new roof was laid, came back a month later and installed new solar panels. The crew was on the ball, respectful of my property and worked safely on the two story house. The new panels were 5 times the output of my old system and now no more PG%E true up baloney! I highly recommend the company. Even the city inspector was impressed and we all know what they can be like! We passed with flying colors! read more

This company has unbelievably good customer service! After installation we noticed a couple panels weren't performing as well as the others. Without a question they promptly replaced those panels. Recently, after 7 years of good performance we've had a couple other issues. Their staff and technicians have been pleasant, thorough, and immediately responsive. In an age of shoddy work and poor attention to customers, this company stands out for its attention to detail and willingness to meet customers' needs and expectations. read more

From the moment Drew put together a proposal through the professional installation/ QA / Handover to the homeowners I can honestly say that Cobalt was among the most professional team that we have used. Update: I've moved. I have solar on my new house. I contacted Cobalt at the recommendation of Tesla, to install a PowerWall system I'd like to buy. Unfortunately Cobalt doesn't want the business. Mark, the president, emailed me saying they don't retrofit powerwalls on PV systems installed by others. Disappointing, to say the least. read more

Cobalt did a great job installing solar panels and back up batteries for our new construction project. They planned and supported the install from beginning to end and were very good about answering questions along the way, managing the process with PG&E, etc. The solar + battery really came in handy during a recent power outage too. read more

We just had a PV system installed on our home and I can't rave enough about how professional and knowledgeable they are, not to mention everyone we dealt with was really nice. They developed their proposal after looking at our home's location via satellite imagery and a year's worth of electric bills. When we expressed possible plans to get an electric car they scaled the proposal appropriately. Once we gave the go-ahead they came out for a site visit and used cool technology to determine how much sun our roof would get all year round. A deposit was required at that point. Cobalt handled obtaining permits from the city. They worked with our schedule for the installation. The bulk of the costs were then due for materials. They arrived right on time. It was of course noisy as they were drilling on the roof but installation was completed in just three days. They then scheduled an inspection with the city and once that was approved immediately contacted PG&E so that we would be able to turn on the switch as soon as possible. We had been warned that it could take up to a month for PG&E to approve the system. We received our approval to turn it on in one week. A neighbor just had a PV system installed by a major HVAC company in Sacramento. If you had a house built in the last couple of decades, your A/C was probably installed by them. Her panels went up a week before ours and she's still waiting for the company to come out to turn it on. Too bad she didn't use Cobalt, she'd have been generating power weeks ago. My husband went to high school with the owner but that didn't stop me from doing research beforehand to make sure the company was reputable. I checked with the BBB and CSLB and other sites and Cobalt System is well deserving of its stellar reputation. If you live the in bay area you should use Cobalt for photovoltaic systems. They know solar. read more

I remodeled my house and was intrigued about adding solar panels. We research potential contractors and contacted Cobalt. They came up with a set of proposals and helped us pick the most efficient proposal based on our needs. Once the contract was signed, no surprises at all, the work was completed as planned (which seems to be a rarity in construction) and the panels are doing great. I would definitely recommend Cobalt Power System to anyone looking to install solar panels on their roof. They also offered to install batteries and were totally upfront with the extra cost if we picked that option. It was refreshing to deal with a company that didn't try to upsell us on extra features. read more

"With Cobalt, everything clicked right along the way it should have. Given the distance - Mountain View to Danville - we were a bit tentative in choosing Cobalt, yet our parents had used them in Los Altos previously and swore by their work so we went ahead and reached out for a quote. Our system designer Ron Lykins proved to be very flexible and professional in his site visits and presentations; he had answers and continuously proved to be knowledgeable of the solar industry. He was even able to provide several roofing contacts with whom Cobalt had worked with who could assist in our remodel. To sum up, the company as a whole demonstrated themselves to be professional, prepared, responsive and here when they said they would be. Truly - no room for improvement." Class act. Very helpful in figuring out exactly what we needed to support a future heat pump / water heater. I do think the SunPower panels and the Tesla Powerwall batteries are the best solutions out there. (The Tesla software app is exceptional.) Quick and beautiful installation. Cobalt painted the conduit to match our house. Managed all the permitting issues and inspections with the county and with PG&E, successfully getting our installation under NEM2.0. Got a bonus when PG&E blacked out our neighborhood just a week after we went operational. We were the only house on our street with the lights still on. We had a nice dinner and watched TV while I guess our neighbors huddled around candles. No more fear of PG&E power outages! read more

We had a 21-panel installation put in in Jan/Feb timeframe after an initial consultation last November with Shane. Cobalt is pretty busy, but they do get back to you and are very patient, laid-back, and no pressure when it comes to the quote/sales process. We went through multiple scenarios with different efficiency panels (we ended up going with Sunpower), with and without an EV, etc. We didn't get other quotes from other vendors, so I can't comment on cost, but we were more concerned that the job would be done right, and Cobalt came highly recommended and instilled more confidence once we actually engaged. We decided to go forward with solar in late Nov, were quoted a rough start time of early Feb, and despite all the rain and potential delays associated with weather, they were able to start our project a little early. I think the installation proved to be a bit more time consuming than originally anticipated - but the installation team led by Blair took their time and didn't rush through the job at all. We were kept informed throughout, asked our opinion on things were there were choices possible, and the whole work site was kept extremely tidy. Basically, the entire experience is exactly what you'd hope for when engaging on a costly project that has long-term impact to your energy costs and home: Patient, no-pressure, informative sales process; good communication with the office on paperwork and scheduling; and a real professional, friendly, conscientious and detail-oriented crew to actually do the installation work. Based on a little over a month of generating electricity, our actual energy generation is very close (a bit above actually) the estimates provided during the sales process. Big kudos to Shane, Blair, and the rest of the Cobalt team. We'd highly recommend them to anyone looking to go solar. read more

I'm a fan! We decided to update our old solar panel system to become more energy efficient. I used Yelp to identify potential companies and Cobalt had great reviews. I reached out and was so impressed with the knowledge and helpfulness of Jisang that I did not look further. Once the design was done, the installation timing was supposed to be September. Fortunately, Cobalt was able to work us in over the summer and we were in operation by September. We will be interested to find just how much more electricity we generate once our true-up period comes next spring. However, even with two electric cars, we believe we will come out ahead, which is to say, paying a modest amount to PG&E for our power usage. Everyone we dealt with at Cobalt was helpful. It is in a consumer's best interest to be in regular contact with them once installation occurs, as there are additional steps before the system can be connected to the grid--and approved by your town and PG&E. We had a good experience, and would highly recommend Cobalt. read more

Used to be a great local company that did great work. They installed my system in 2006 and have helped me maintain it through equipment failures, upgrades etc. Now they have a new policy which says they won't do any work if the solar system is out of warranty, including replacing parts for systems they installed. Huh? So you're saying all of your early customers who supported you when you were small are no longer worth your time because your business is doing too well? I hope this doesn't backfire on you in the future, because I'm definitely not recommending Cobalt to anyone who asks for a referral for a solar company. Stay away from these guys, and just go with someone who will support you even after the warranty on your system expires. read more

Cobalt was my 5th solar electric installation - 3 times for houses, 2 times for businesses and they are so much better than anybody else out there. There are a lot of different solar panels out there and inverters and battery backup systems - but having an installer with world class processes from design and planning to permitting to installation to coordination with other trades to start up and problem solving to permitting/PGE coordination - Cobalt is so good at what they do and how they communicate, they leave everyone else we've ever used in the dust. Our work with Cobalt started with a relatively new house (7 years old) that was not wired entirely correct and they helped us create a whole home back up system with solar electric tied into our electric car charging. They worked with our General Contractor and electricians to rewire the existing main panel, add a new sub-panel to better distribute the electrical loads and when we had challenges on start up, they sent the skilled resources necessary to figure it all out and make sure everything was working well. There process was logical and systematic - it was clear the hand-offs from designer to engineer to installer were well done and prepped to ensure a clean installation. We had one issue with them when a wiring bolt on the main panel had not been tightened down enough - whereas the people we've used in the past never took responsibility for anything, Cobalt sent out a team of experts, figured it out, made the adjustments necessary, immediately offered to compensate us (blew out a couple minor transformers on our irrigation system). They worked efficiently with the town and PGE - I was amazed when the inspector for the town was asking them for advice on how things should work - as though they were learning from Cobalt. We have gone through two major renovations on two large properties in 2022 and 2023 - of all the trades working, they were by far the best and most professional - from first conversation to hand-off, everything just worked the way it was supposed to work - according to plan, on schedule, everything buttoned up - for anyone who has done large scale renovations before, that simply does not happen. They have my highest recommendation. read more

Great experience, from start to finish. We had 17 panel a 5.7kW system installed in August 2019. Drew Johnson designed a configuration that allowed the maximum solar capacity given our existing PG&E service. Drew thoroughly answered all of the questions we had regarding our installation as our installation was a little complicated given that we wished to upgrade the service panel and faced a few challenges with grandfathering in replacement equipment. Cobalt also did an excellent job of coordinating the solar panel installation with both the re-roof and the pool solar water installation. This was important since we didn't want any issues with the re-roof warranty Vince Valencia and the installation team did an excellent job of installing the solar panels, upgrading the service panel and installing the solar PV connection equipment. The team members were courteous, knowledgeable, and tidy once they were on-site. They also coordinated the stucco repairs and city permits. Tatiana Haimo, the Cobalt documentation specialist, kept us informed as to the progression of the PG&E final approval and PTO. After PG&E granted approval, Drew stopped by for a final wrap-up meeting to explain the monitoring system, warranty, tax credits, SunPower rebates etc. We found Cobalt to be knowledgeable, professional and extremely communicative. All emails, phone calls were answered in 24 hrs. I will definitely recommend Cobalt for solar PV installations to friends and colleagues. read more

Its been just over a year since Cobalt installed a 6.9Kwh system on our house. We went with 315w Panasonic panels with a solaredge inverter and power optimizers installed on and east face and west face of our roof. I had solar installed on my home back in early 2019. I had the best experience with Cobalt Power Systems, recommend wholeheartedly.

Our original solar system was installed in 2016 by Cobalt Power. They did a good job and we were pleased with the results. I recently called them to request additional solar panels and storage added to my existing system and I was told that "I wasn't worth their time". I am very sad and disappointed in their attitude toward their existing customers. read more

I spoke with Nate, who was honest and straightforward about the needs specific to our house. Highly recommend Cobalt.

We had a 7.7 kW system installed recently by Cobalt. I did my research and contacted 6 companies. 2 flat out refused to even come out to estimate saying they wouldn't work with the city of Palo Alto. I got 4 bids. Cobalt was not the cheapest bid, but they were by far the most thorough and walked the roof first while some only used satellite images. I called references and it was clear everyone loved Cobalt. Everything was taken care of. From planning to city permits to installation to utility company inspection it was all done. Never had to do a thing. Just signed some papers and that was it. Even better they painted the solar conduit to match the roof, the house and the trim. They go above and beyond. Other solar installs aren't the same. I've looked. I can't recommend them enough. Ron Lykins was my system designer and the install leads were Paul and Ricardo. The install team was punctual, responsive, clean and very respectful. My advice w solar: it's your house. Get it done right. It's not about the cheapest bid. Your long term plan is for these panels and your ROOF to last 20+ years. Go with Cobalt. They've done tons of systems in the Bay Area. They know how to deal with the city governments. They go above and beyond. And they stand by their work after it's done. read more

Cobalt has been fantastic from start to finish. I just got my panels installed and finished today. Blake and Taylor were terrific and such kind, considerate, knowledgeable, tidy and efficient installers. They were a pleasure to have at my home and I knew we were in good hands when we met them. A few months ago, I researched and interviewed a handful of solar companies. Each one has their own gimmick, however Cobalt was superb and above and beyond everyone else. Nathan came over to my home and gave me the information on Cobalt, its installation plan, the panels, etc. At the same time, Sean went on my roof and measured all the peaks and roof lines. He was extremely thorough and figured out how to fit a lot of panels on 2 roofs. He also found a roof problem that we never knew we had (dry rot and a sinking roof) and thanks to him, we got it fixed before we had major issues. No other solar company found that issue. He even took pictures up top and gave them to me as a curtesy. The information provided by Cobalt was easy to understand and nicely presented. Nathan put together everything so nicely. The estimate that I got back from Nathan was not only the best price compared to others, but the easier to understand and follow. It is detailed, but everything you need in 3 pages....not 25 with useless information that others give. I had a few questions and asked for some changes which Nathan so kindly did and came up with a great plan. Nathan happened to be on vacation when I emailed once and he took it upon himself to get back to me asap, which was so kind. After months of research, Cobalt was the provider we picked because of their professionally, no push sales, great product and very fair price, terrific presentation of the estimate, finding my roof issue and the customer service overall. One time I called at 4:30pm and the president of the company answered. Others were out of the office and he answered the phone. I was impressed! John was the scheduler for my project. He worked with me and my slight changes as I had to get my roof fixed and had delays with the roofing company. He was able to switch things up with ease and made it seem like it was no problem, even though he probably had to do a lot of work to reschedule things. Such a nice guy and answered my email late in the evening and even called after hours.,...going above and beyond. Cobalt started this past Monday on my roof. They came right on time and had the delivery ready. Blake was in charge and he was terrific, along with Taylor. The panels were delivered first thing in the morning and by end of day, they had 8 panels up on one of the roofs. On day 3, they are finished. All the panels are installed, the wiring is complete, but even better....everything looks flush with my roof as they painted everything to blend in. What service! Blake and Taylor were super efficient and worked tirelessly these days....always with a smile and cheery mood. We were so lucky to have such wonderful people to do our installation. From Nathan, Sean, and John to Blake and Taylor, I am extremely happy with everything thus far. Thank you, Cobalt. I was too eager to wait to write my review before the solar gets turned on in the next week or two, but I have a good feeling all will turn out great. I would highly recommend Cobalt for your solar needs! read more

As a General Contractor, I've had the pleasure of working with Cobalt Power Systems as a subcontractor on our projects and also as a client, when they installed a 4.4kW system on my roof in November of 2012. Ron, the system designer did a great job evaluating our current and future needs (we were in the process of getting an electric vehicle) and analyzing the best approach for installing the system. The permitting process went very smoothly and they provided great advice for working through some issues with PG&E. Their installation team was knowledgeable, courteous, fast and neat, and the installation is really clean and professional. A few months after completing the installation, the inverter started misbehaving. They came out and replaced it immediately and everything has been working flawlessly ever since. It generates over 91% our our power (by kWH), but with the time of use metering that they recommended, our PG&E bill is less than $5 a month - just the administration fees. I highly recommend them. read more

Our 26 panel, 9 kW Sunpower system on our San Jose house completed in April and has now been generating electricity for one month. Even with the morning overcast we've been having this May, it generated over 1300 kWh, more than planned. I can't say enough good things about Cobalt Power, our installer. Kurt Newick was our system designer and sales engineer. At our first meeting in December, he reviewed our needs/wants, Sunpower solutions and he pain-stakingly performed an on-roof shade analysis that other companies providing quotes did not, to provide the most efficient panel design possible with our roof orientation. Note that this was not the first solar electric we had Cobalt install for us. They had installed to our satisfaction a 6 kW system on our Cupertino home in 2011. Some of our roof sections were very steep and, while other installers either hesitated or refused to consider installing on them, Kurt was confident that the Cobalt install team and Shelton roofers could install on these roof sections. Kurt provided in-depth technical specifications for the Sunpower products and our system design. He also provided quotes for a Tesla Powerwall backup system. Kurt was very detailed and thorough and his quote was competitive. The install team led by Blake executed Kurt's system design to the letter, completing the install in 7 days. They were very conscientious, laying out conduit as aesthetically as possible, painting the conduit to match the exterior of the house, minimizing damage to the interior around the required subpanel, touch-up painting walls and even sweeping up debris. And no damaged concrete tiles! The city inspection went without a hitch and 2 weeks on the day after the install started, PGE gave us the ok to start operation, much sooner than expected. Of course, quality starts at the top and Mark Byington as owner is committed long term to the support of Cobalt customers, important to those of us who expect their systems to continue efficient operation for 15 to 25 years. Cobalt is the best! read more

Stellar experience, from start to finish. Had a 5kW system installed in July 2018, and worked with Drew J to come up with a configuration that perfectly suited our needs. Drew throughly answered all of the questions we had while we were evaluating different solar vendors, and once the project was a go, kept us in the loop about all the different timelines and documentation requirements we needed to meet. Blair and the install crew were great as well: friendly, knowledgeable, and tidy once they were on-site. They also did a great job with the cosmetic aspects of our install as well. Once the city permit was approved and PG&E granted approval, Cobalt stopped by to turn on the system. Drew wrapped our experience with a final meeting to explain the monitoring system, our warranty, the process for applying for the tax incentive, etc. I wish all of my other experiences working with contractors were as smooth as the time I spent with Cobalt getting solar installed in our home. We interviewed several companies but none of them would consider solar panels for our house because we had wood shake shingles. I'm SO glad Cobalt had the right team in place to make sure we could do solar panels on our roof. They were professional, delivered what they promised and never was there a time when I emailed/contacted the team and they didn't get back to me in less than a day. I decided I wanted to lessen our carbon footprint by buying an electric car, and there was no way I was going to do that without first going solar. Nathan at Cobalt helped plan a system that would provide for all of our household needs and car charging. I sympathize with anyone that has to deal with San Francisco building inspectors, but Vince and his install team dealt with that seamlessly and did a fabulous job. In the first few months of installation and before we bought our electric vehicle, we were elated to watch our PG&E meter run backwards each day. In our first year we generated 10% more than the design estimate, and are relieved to recharge our car each day and know it won't cost an arm and a leg. With PG&E's increasing liabilities from wildfires and electric rates projected to double, I'm very happy we made this decision. Cobalt was extremely helpful every step of the way. On more than one occasion I would e-mail Nathan when I got home from work, hoping to receive a reply the next business day. Inevitably I would hear back from him that same evening. Their front-office staff was very professional, and very patient with this non-tech customer. I had originally planned to get estimates from three solar contractors, but after the amount of work it took dealing with just two, and seeing how much more personal and thorough Cobalt was compared to a much larger and better-known rival, the choice was easy. They inspired a very high level of trust and confidence. For our needs, we could not have asked to find a better solar-electric contractor. read more

Was a pleasure to deal with them. Great communication! It took a while for the installation to occur, but they were upfront about when it would be scheduled and kept to the schedule. They kept at it even with a few PG&E curveballs that were unique to my property. Would highly recommend! read more

We had a great experience working with Cobalt, Kurt Newick walked us through from beginning to end with fairly technical explanation of the PV system down to best practice for cleaning the panels. When designing the system, he worked with us in minimizing visibility of the arrays from below which was important to us. He really has a wealth of knowledge and is extremely passionate about 'harnessing the power of the sun', which made for a overall satisfying experience (seeing a credit from PG&E is definitely a plus too). I highly recommend Cobalt! read more
