Would have given a negative star if possible. very disappointing service when the manager scolded us for bringing a plain pancake and apple sauce for my 12-month old who couldn't eat anything else on the menu. manager got grumpy very quickly when i asked if exceptions could be made for a baby (we also have been consistently ordering $50-$60 worth of breakfast for the rest of the table of 4 each weekend we go there), but she reacted very emotionally and rudely declinded and never served us for the rest of the meal. We had tolerated the mediocre food and questionable hygiene before as the rest of the staff were nice. But this woman manager really ruined it all. I also just noticed there were many similar 1-star reviews on StarNut's horrific customer services. Ranging from discriminatory to colored customers to unaccommodating to those with special needs. I haven't been to this cafe in about 3 years. It is an expensive cafe, for sure. I went to get a cup of their awesome Mexican Mayan iced coffee and to use my gift card that was gifted to me just before the pandemic started and found out that the place has new ownership and under new management. I was disappointed that they were unwilling to honor the gift card and told me I was SOL but I wasn't going to leave without the iced coffee since it was the main reason I went yesterday. I was willing to disregard the gift card issue if the Mexican Mayan coffee was just as I remember it but it was not even up to par. (The owners daughter is Celiac so they're very diligent about avoiding cross-contamination). A recent discovery for me, if you love Italian Lavassa coffee this is the place for you. They also serve sandwiches, pastries, Gelato, and sorbet as well as crepes on the weekends. This is the second time I had an issue with Starnut. When the first time happened I decided to turn a blind eye but I will never visit this establishment again. It's a shame because the food is actually delicious. Once we were there with the Board of a local group of moms. We had a Board meeting there. The Cafe space is pretty big which is why we chose this location. However, we were informed by the management that our group is too big and we are not allowed to have a meeting there. We were also told there is a strict time limit. I was shocked given that 1-a we would all order food so that was money for the business 2-there was plenty of empty space in the cafe at the time and it was NOT a high time for patronage, 3- we were under 10 people and 4-we were the board of a local group with 200 families' membership. You would think any business owner would love to have our patronage and get our good word around. That incident passed. I would come back to work for an hour on the internet there and enjoy a so-called "gourmet" "cafe" experience. Then today, I was there with my friends and a business partner who is a local real estate agent. My friend had her son with her. We all ordered food and coffee from the establishment but the owner came over and asked us to leave because my friend had brought outside food for her son because the food at StarNut was not what her son would eat. Again, we all ordered food from StarNut. Additionally, this was discriminatory the owner doesn't know maybe a child has severe allergies or is on a special diet. I was floored at this reaction. My friend tried to explain it to him and he shamed her so badly, she had to rush her two year old to the corner and shove food in his mouth so we could stay for the meeting!!!! Imagine that! Then, the owner has the audacity to say, Your child isn't a baby anymore and proceeds to give him two pieces of chocolate presumably because he felt bad. If we had not all ordered food from the cafe, I would understand but this is unacceptable, bad business, and frankly, inconsiderate and rude. If management has heartburn over a single bite of food from the outside entering in, they'd be better off, kindly and gently telling patrons that "ma'am for next time, please know we have a strict policy...etc" not "I need to ask you to leave!!!!" I'm super disappointed because I saw other people's drinks that looked good, but mine looked grainy and tasted wrong. Homemade real Lebanese baked Kibbe: the closest I've ever found to my Mom's! There's quiet seating in back, a bit more lively up front and lots of outdoor tables (dogs welcome). I've literally been a customer here since I was 12 (21 now, what's up) and I've purchased something every time I go. Sometimes I sit for a bit while I wait for a friend or family member to arrive, which has always been fine. Today I sat down with my brown friend. We were only sitting for two minutes before we were asked to leave despite the fact we said we would be ordering something soon. While I hope that it wasn't because of my friend, I have been a loyal customer for the past nine years and I was never an issue. The gelato is over priced and I still came back because of the convenience of location and usually friendly service. I will not be back. I start most every day here. The coffee is the best in the area. The bonus is you can get tasty food, as well. My favorites include the chocolate or almond croissants made fresh each day. I also like their pies--blackberry is my favorite. (The coffee and the pie is why I initially started going here.) If you need something a little more substantial try the avocado toast with or without an egg. It's very, very good and unlike avocado toast I've had anywhere else. Plus, it's freshly made. Also, the Santorini in the breakfast offerings is delightful and filling. Great after a morning workout, or in preparation for a workout later in the day. Today around midday, I was looking to grab something to eat and decided to stop by in Starnuts My daughter and I were surprised about the change in the menu. I had a spinach and gruyere quiche with a green salad and my daughter had a Tuscany panini (Brie cheese, pesto sauce, chicken perfectly cooked and dry tomatoes) My quiche was cook to perfection just as the ones I eat in Paris, the salad was fresh with a delicious dressing and my daughters panini was crunchy and soft at the same time. The combination of ingredients were harmonic, fresh and super delicious. The new owners are a very nice couple who have improved exponentially this coffee shop, which was already good. I invite anyone who reads this post to stop by and try it. I am looking forward also for live music night and other events they organize there! 2.5 Sorry, but I gotta take it down a notch. On one hand, I think the croissants have gotten slightly larger. On the down side, people seem to call to set them aside, so they don't have many left past 10 or 11. I also don't really feel welcome to study here and so I've stopped going altogether. The last couple of times I've been there, I've gotten comments that basically mean that I'm not spending enough on an hourly basis. I used to take grad school practice tests here because there was wi-fi and coffee, but after a few weeks, I think they got tired of me coming. I would usually get a coffee and a croissant or two---that would come to around $10--a decent amount for bread and coffee in my opinion. But even that $7 sandwich would get comments like, THAT'S IT? so I guess that doesn't justify sitting around a fairly empty cafe on the weekend. This place has been consistently delicious and has offered the best service. I showed up a handful of times as I traveled to the area, and one of the owners has remembered my favorite drink since my FIRST time here. That is so rare and they just gave me one on the house for returning to the shop for coffee with a friend. Phenomenal people, service, products, and caffeine. As many other people have said, be prepared to spend a good amount of money at this place. A small slice of apple tart is $5 as is a small cup of gelato. You can get specialty lattes and coffees, and those can also be around $5. The pies and tarts aren't worth it because they are so small. The gelato is pretty good for a hot day - the rose flavor is delicious. The small size cups for hot drinks are very small, probably tinier than the tall size at Starbucks. This cafe also offers breakfast items, lunch sandwiches, and wine. There are several tables inside and a few tables outside, but what this place really has going for it is the location. There aren't any other coffee shops around or small cafes for pastries, so I would think Star Nut gets a ton of business. There is a nice courtyard in the front too with a fountain. On Saturday evenings, there is often a live band playing music. Bottom line: this place is alright if you're need a quick pick-me-up. First of all, the name is just cute, so you have to go in and check it out. The owners are absolutely awesome (Joe and Denise) and their passion for the shop and what they do shows in their spectacular service. Their prices are comparable to any other coffee/tea/specialty shop, think Starbucks prices (small Chai for $3 and some change). I had the gelato - which was awesome... not homemade or anything special, but when there isn't another ice cream place in McLean, it was definitely a welcome treat. I was thrilled to see that they have some Lebanese food (Joe is Lebanese... so, figures) - the Mediterranean Platter. I didn't have it, but it's definitely on my list of to-dos. It's $11.95 - which is pretty steep, but if it's good stuff, it's worth it in my book. It's in a beautiful building, but I must say that I wasn't particularly impressed with the inside. They have a lot of great merchandise and their food looks awesome, but the decor and atmosphere is lack-luster at best. I seriously want to get my hands on it and spruce it up a bit ;). This place is nice. Bonus points for having almond milk .. Minus points for charging me a fortune for it. The staff seemed friendly, just a man and a woman, not sure if they are the owners. But they seemed to know all the customers in the place, all 3 of them. I got a bit ignored because they were so personable to their regulars, but not to me, a first timer.
