While we've previously enjoyed the food at the Starduster, we were very disappointed that no staff were masked on our last visit. While some people are applauding this, it's very disheartening to see as COVID cases are on the rise. I imagine that it will have marked the last visit for our family as we are living with people at high risk. This is a cozy little spot that cooks delicious food! Also, super friendly staff! You can tell they have a lot of "regulars" here. :) My husband got steak and eggs, and really enjoyed his meal. Portions are HUGE. I was able to piece together a vegan breakfast since they have oatmeal with blueberries, but it's very omnivore & lacto-ovo vegetarian friendly. Which, is more common anyway, especially with cute, little, local places like this. Really, stop in. It's fun to watch the planes, and even the sunrise. Tea options were plentiful as well! read more

Greasy good ol' breakfast food- you got it! Their crispy chicken fried stale was very good. Hash browns are fresh. It's freshly cut in-house. Service was friendly, quick and efficient. Environment is mostly clean, the floors were sticky. We picked up a cinnamon roll to go. It was huge! However, it was disappointing!!! The frosting is basically cake frosting- yuck! We stopped here for breakfast this morning since we were staying just around the corner and was happy we did. I like the half orders they offer but I opted for the whole Skillet and couldn't finish it. The portions are large but the half portion of buscuits& gravey was just right. I ordered the skillet with sausage and garlic and have to say, the flavor was excellent with just the right amount of garlic. The side of bacon was good too but the pancake was just OK. The next time I visit, I will definitely opt for the half order. I'm not a big fan of sausage gravy but I enjoyed the taste I had with it over hashbrowns. The "Starduster Cafe" is in a rundown building at the end of a long drive. there is no atmosphere, the pathway leading to the main entrance is littered with walkway hazards that they have placed cones to mark and warn against. Instead of fixing the issue they put a band aid over it... The staff are at first friendly but it is apparent they avoid customers who don't appear to be enjoying themselves. The discussion topics by the staff are lewd and crude for a dining establishment, I and my husband don't want to hear how your freezer isn't working correctly(seriously loud conversation an a room no bigger than 15x20 ft) or about a T-shirt that talks about blowjobs (exact wording being "nobody wants to swallow when its my meat in their mouth") in a restaurant, serving older & younger guests. Now for the "FOOD", it's appalling, grotesquely appalling. The eggs were somehow burnt but still entirely liquid inside, and no, not over medium where the yolk is still creamy and the whites are cooked, I mean the outer layer of egg had been flash fried and the entire thing was raw inside. The "Hash-browns" had the same exact treatment as the eggs, a giant heaping pile of shredded potatoes that had the consistency of sitting in water for days to keep them "fresh", the outer later crisped up with the interior being a slimy mush with onions and bell pepper tidbits thrown in, then if it wasn't bad enough they buried it in a thick layer of cheese to further the consistency of greasy/uncooked. My husbands food was the same. We did not finish our meals. I paid without complaint. We chose to eat at this establishment because friends of ours had recommended it to us in the past. The Starduster was an awesome experience, from top to bottom. The food... oh the food. SO good. This place has perhaps just become my new favorite. I had the eggs Benedict, with fried potatoes and a monster cinnamon roll. Every bit of this meal was delicious. I kept eating, despite being plenty full, just to continue enjoying the flavor. Have eaten here a number of times in the past, but I don't know that I will be quick to go back again. We went for breakfast on a Saturday morning, knowing that it would likely be busy, but we got in right away. Ordered coffee as we were looking at the menu only to find out that they were out of coffee cups so we would have to wait...that's ok, because the coffee was mediocre at best....should have gotten a soda. I got the Veggie Bleu scramble which was actually pretty good, but my hashbrowns were burnt, like black, burnt. You would think you would notice that when you put them on the plate. It was a beautiful day at the airport, but for the ambiance and a better meal I think next time I will go to The Flight Deck in Salem. read more

We came for breakfast at the recommendation of a friend (Thanks Shavon). This cafe has the feel of a small town mom & pop kind of diner but it rests along side the landing strip of Independence Airport. Folks were literally flying in for a good home-cooked Sunday morning meal. The food was excellent. I had fluffy biscuits and savory gravy. My partner had a massive cinnamon roll and bacon. Service was quick and friendly. Turns out one of the cooks and I are old friends. It was good to exchange a hug with a man who's story is an inspiration. We'll be back, especially in the warm weather for the outdoor seating where we can better watch the airplanes. read more

I love starduster! Great, consistent food. My absolute favorite is their corn beef melt. Can't get anything like it anywhere else around here. They have a lot of great bfast options too, I'm a big fan of their French toast, pineapple pancakes and bfast burrito. Their prices are fair and you get a good portion of things. Starduster Cafe is open from 6 am - 3 pm and located at the Independence airport. It's a relatively small place, so don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit before getting seated. The food at this joint is good. For breakfast they have your standard fare: omelets, hash browns, biscuits and gravy and plenty other things you'd expect at a breakfast place. I got something called the "Bomb Raider", which was home style potatoes with bacon, jalapenos, cheese, salsa and sour cream with your choice of eggs and toast. Really tasty and the portions were big enough that I struggled to finish it. What really makes this place, though, is that the Independence Airport take-off strip is in clear view from the outside dining area. While chowing down on your tasty grub you can watch the planes land and take off. Soon you will find yourself pondering physics, debating which plane paint job is the sweetest, and adding "get airplane license" to your bucket list. We were lucky enough to go on a busy day and saw over 10 departures. I have since returned many times. I admit to taking pains to arrive at odd hours when I'm pretty sure they won't be busy. To my taste the eggs benedict and homemade corned beef hash are not distinguished and I would advise repeat visitors to explore the menu if their first visit does not please. When I first started coming here I think the chef used chipped beef for the flavor accent in the gravy. That, and possibly air entrainment (?) which gave the gravy a light texture like cream whipped to where it just starts to form peaks, plus biscuits of inimitable fluffiness, put the biscuits and gravy at a level I have never seen equaled by any other mid-valley cafe. Now I think the chef is using sausage bits instead of chipped beef, a big step down, but you still get the other qualities. I'm a big eater but I can barely finish a half order with one egg. You can load up with 3000 calories here and walk away with change from a $10 bill. It's an old building that's been worked long and hard. I would not describe it as dirty but it's worn, and the place smells of kitchen smoke. How you react to that is idiosyncratic. Some outdoor seating. After multiple evaluations of four of the most popular breakfast joints in the Salem/Turner area, I still very much prefer this cafe, and would be here weekly if I lived closer. read more

Wowee, great breakfast! Enough to share. Benedict is always my go-to. Extra crispy hash browns? No problem! The only issue is a bit of that buttery crisco type (fake) flavoring came through... but with pepper and catsup, the crisp wins over enough to enjoy... Coffee: Good! I am used to strong espresso and this had enough flavor to satisfy. I am having a hard time rating. They are 4.75 in my book. Buttercrisco stuff is my only gripe. I love going to this place because it's right on the airstrip and my dad, who is a pilot, can fly over and have breakfast with me. Aside from the sentimental reason, I like this restaurant for its portion sizes and prices, the home town feel, and the service. The cinnamon roll is the size of my face!!! If you're looking for a "less guilty" option, their low cal menu has some of their best items on there! However, wait time to get your food can be a bit long, some of the items on their menu are less than great, and the dining area is very cramped and not clean. read more

It was out first time ever going to the Starduster Cafe, and we had heard positive things about the food so we were very excited to try it. The food was delicious, but the service was the worst I have ever received! Our server, whose name I think was Teresa, was really rude to us and was complaining about us when we could very clearly hear everything she was saying to one of her coworkers about us. Only place to really get breakfast in independence. The building is so tiny and there is ALWAYS a long wait- BUT no waiting area. When its nice outside the outdoor seating is great and its fun to watch the airplanes come in and out. The staff is mediocre, they arent the friendliest bunch, the food is decent and for a good price. Usually I enjoy this place, but I called to order to-go, and the lady was rude, passed me off to a gentlemen(which I understand with them being busy!) and I asked if they could do egg whites, he asked her because he didn't know, and I hear her in the background say "yes.
