It was the perfect place to catch up with friends or settle in with a laptop to get some work done. I ordered the Black Forest latte, and it exceeded my expectations. It was well balanced, not overly sweet or rich, and truly captured the flavors of a classic Black Forest cake. The service was quick, welcoming, and friendly, making the experience even better. Insomnia Coffee has definitely earned a spot on my list of must visit stops whenever I'm back in the area!

My favorite is of course in France, second is Bakery Noveau in Seattle. The third best, in my wife and my taste buds have been La Provence and Petite Provence. The Oreo cheesecakes were so unusually delicious, I was so surprised and delighted by how good they were and wish I had gotten the recipe. My favorite treat tho was the nectarine panna cotta we were served while we waited for our tea. Our host was friendly, knowledgeable, and seemed to really care about the details of afternoon tea.

I recommended Insomnia and she loved it. The bakery items are also terrific. I am a croissant freak, and theirs is now my 3rd favorite. My first is anywhere in Paris, 2nd is Bakery Noveau in Seattle. My third favorite was La Provence, but the version at Insomnia is even better. It flakes crumbs as it should. The staff is also quite friendly Today I had the blueberry/blackberry scone and it was so good. I did bring a croissant home as my wife agrees with my assessment as well. I will definitely be back, and that will be quite soon.

Some people say "it's their biz," but not really: They're imposing their biz on everyone else's biz, and it's bad biz. The ones who are the most overt about it don't last. Big River was particularly egregious, as it sold the sugary hummingbird-feed lattes of its nearest competitors (Starbucks and Black Rock) without adding anything of real quality to differentiate itself from that pack. The "food" was clearly prepackaged, stale approximations of baked goods and the facility itself just screamed "overhead." When Insomnia--a far more subtle chain run by a pair of dudes who decorate the joint like a Southeast Portland couple, but apparently give off Pastor Skip vibes to the workers--opened nearby and made the minimal effort of pouring a full menu of espresso drinks and offering an in-house roast, it was over for Big River. Never located near a river of any size and overly reliant on Aloha's then-lack of better options, Big River is a cautionary tale of what not to do when you open a coffee shop that you actually wish was a Christian bookstore.

The pastries are mostly light and mildly sweet, which I personally enjoy because I'm not much of a heavy, sugar-bomb style baked goods. If you like delicate flavors, this place hits. The service is really good and the ambiance is cute. My favorite's are here: Macarons (Specifically the pistachio & rose), red bean bread, and all the pastries. I tried their coffee couple of times, and it was really good. Overall, a must try if you haven't. I don't know anyone so far who doesn't like Tous Les Jours :P
