First time visiting Insomnia Coffee, and it definitely won't be my last! I've traveled to the PNW several times, so I'm surprised it took me this long to stop in. While running errands on the morning of the Fourth of July, my cousin, my niece, and I popped in for a much needed caffeine boost. The atmosphere was calm, cozy, and inviting. It was the perfect place to catch up with friends or settle in with a laptop to get some work done. I ordered the Black Forest latte, and it exceeded my expectations. It was well balanced, not overly sweet or rich, and truly captured the flavors of a classic Black Forest cake. The service was quick, welcoming, and friendly, making the experience even better. Insomnia Coffee has definitely earned a spot on my list of must visit stops whenever I'm back in the area! read more

Fun visit to Insomnia over the last two weeks. Last time, a person behind the counter explained the café to me, as I had never been in. The Croissant was incredible. My favorite is of course in France, second is Bakery Noveau in Seattle. The third best, in my wife and my taste buds have been La Provence and Petite Provence. The Croissant at Insomnia is that good and is equal to our third fav. We went back in the other day and again, it was so good. The counter person was a but busy, but very nice. It seems that Insomnia strives to provide, just like the multinational corporation from Seattle, the most comfortable environment, friendly staff, and a uniform menu that caters to all markets, across all its locations. Albeit the menu seems limited, you'll find options such as the Chocolate Croissant, (which is my favorite! Ask for it warmed up and you can taste its crispy flakes with more gusto!) to the Vegan Coffee Cake, which is surprisingly tasty, and you wouldn't think it's vegan! Also, maybe I forgot to mention it, but this is a vegan coffee cake! On the savory side, I'd encourage you to try the Savory Biscuit with Egg and Sausage, or Bacon. This is for those indulging themselves in the moment with their loved ones, and not on a diet. Speaking of diet, if you'd like to enjoy of their carefully curated ambience, assortment of free board games or joining a friend for chess or knitting on a Monday, you could enjoy drip coffee for as low as $4 (!) or the delicious Fruit Sangria Tea - add honey for some decadence. Pro tip: Get a 20% discount on everything by buying 4 x $25 Insomnia gift cards at Costco, for $79. Again, my favorite part, beyond the classic Aztec Mocha showered in cinnamon (not for health but because that enhances flavor in food!), that they're open at 6am sharp, the free blankets to keep you warm when sitting outside, or the fact that the barista knows me by name and spells my long name correctly (Baltazar), is that all this together show the amount of love both owners and employees put into each cup of coffee poured for us. read more

I used to really like Insomnia. But the last few times I've been here, it hasn't been that great. There used to be vegan baked goods available. I usually come for afternoon refreshment. Coffee, baked goods, reading, browse unique artwork by local artists. This visit didn't have artwork, nor vegan baked goods. I was told their vegan items usually sell out in the morning. I got an iced soy latte, and it mostly tasted like soy milk without any coffee flavor. I added a couple stevia packets to give it flavor. The only thing that I appreciated were the comfy seating areas. It would be a great place to meet up with friends or book club type activity. I guess the hunt for a good neighborhood coffee place continues. read more

I visited a friend and stopped by insomnia for a coffee. It's one of her favorite places and after years of hearing her mentioning the infamous Insomnia Coffee, I was excited to finally try a cup myself. I ordered a simple cold brew, which was great. The best part was the overall service and ambiance. The barista was friendly, wait times were nonexistent, and the shop was very cozy for a cold morning. I love the mismatched furniture. It adds to the ambiance and makes the place feel hip without trying too hard. read more

There's no way to exit once you are in line and discover you might be late to work because of slow service. I waited approximately 25 minutes in line before being served with 2 cars ahead of me. Well this is awkward. My doctor's office is over by this location of Insomnia. I'd pretty much written off buying their drinks because they weren't even tasting like what I recalled. But I stopped here, went through the drive thru, and ordered my favorite Insomnia beverage. Black Forest Mocha with 6 shots, Oatmilk and no whip. Well first off, the staff (both times I visited last week,) was kind and very friendly. I also didn't wait long at all for my coffee. But WEIRD my coffee was $2 less here than at the Murray Hill location. Guess I just have to drive a bit farther for good service and coffee because they're a 5/5 and the other location right by my house is a 2/5. read more

This is my first time here and what a great location. It's in a business complex that has a few doctors offices, restaurants, and right next to the 53rd Ave Park across from Hidden Creek Community Center. You can either enjoy your coffee inside their cozy set up, or take it to go and walk around the neighborhood on a nice sunny day. Walking inside, you are at the opening leading up to the ordering counter. You'll walk by some local goods for sale and their large variety of coffee bags. The drink menu is pretty straight forward and they had an array of different pastries and breakfast items including quiche and egg sandwiches. I wish they had prices displayed for the pastries in the case but maybe I just missed it. I was super tempted by the strawberry matcha muffin but I decided on an iced chai with oat milk instead. Prices are typical for a coffee shop and the chai was very flavorful! The baristas were super friendly and seems very efficient with whipping up the drinks and preparing the food. They either call your name or the name of your drink or food and you pick it up from the counter - very straightforward. There are booths and tables and couches accommodating for different group sizes. I thought the mismatched furnitures added to its cozy and homey charm. My boyfriend dragged me here on a lazy Sunday morning because he wanted a cappuccino before we did some "hard DIY labor" back at home. When we arrived at Insomnia, the drive thru was full but there was plenty of parking. The coffee shop looks like an ultra-hip McMenamins with modern rustic charm and mismatched vintage furniture. The line was long, but everything moved quickly. The pastries in the display case looked good, but I opted for their hot food options on the menu. I got an everything bagel with cheese, egg, and bacon. My bf got his cappuccino and I got some drip coffee too. We found a seat at a table near the back. The tables were protected by an extra clear plastic screen between other booths, so that was good. Very quickly, we picked my bagel and the coffee up from the bar. The medium roast drip coffee was mellow (not too acidic) and the cappuccino foam was thick and had an almost caramel taste to it. The bagel sandwich hit the spot because the bagel was soft, the cheese was melted, and the egg was fluffy. There is a local park right outside and plenty of outdoor space for an afternoon picnic or weekend chill out session. Overall, I would recommend Insomnia and I will return with my friends when it's appropriate to mingle freely with other people again. read more

0Oh, Insomnia. Sigh. Okay so this morning my minion and I had errands to run. He compromises his immune system for me by running into places, I drive.Since I am doing chemo and immunotherapy, I usually choose not to go in. Sad but that's reality right now. We picked the drive thru at Insomnia for coffee and breakfast. I had my heart set on Insomnia's warm, yummy, gooey cinnamon roll. There were four cars ahead of us and soon, 3 behind. They don't have a speaker. You order at the one window. There is a sign that suggests you only get 2 or 3 items. The front car got two boxes ( sandwiches?) and two coffees 19 minutes after I checked into yelp. I don't begrudge them four items, we needed four also for two people. That seems just normal. Eventually the car in front of us pulled up to order. Meanwhile, a barista/worker came outside and took orders from ALL the cars behind us, but not us, then ran in. The car in front of us got two blended drinks maybe a few minutes later. We pulled up and finally ordered. Oh, she said. We just sold the last cinnamon roll. Sooooo sad. Heartbreaking after that long wait. She took our order for a real caramel latte, an aztec mocha, and two plain bagel breakfast sandwiches with bacon. $21.50. She disappeared for a while, I think to make the sandwiches and we watched a trio of baristas ( including the one who was outside) make drinks pretty slowly, chatting and kind of easygoingly ( is that a word?) . I think we are used to the pace of Black Rock (which operates like a race car pit most days) but this was kinda crazy slow overall. I am convinced one of the cars behind us got my cinnamon roll. Serious :/ Our food was fine, the bacon was a little undercooked but everything was good. The coffee was good. Insomnia has always frustrated me. It has the potential for great but usually lands at being somewhat adequate. In minion's opinion ( which I heard about alllllll day ) one person should take orders, two or three should pull shots, another needs to expedite food. It should not be everyone doing all the things and kinda bumping around the small space together. Inefficient! he proclaimed. He bought me a cinnamon roll later, elsewhere. There IS an online ordering option. My advice is do that and go inside to pick up. Skip drive thru unless it is empty. Go early to nab the cinnamon roll. Insomnia is an awesome coffeehouse. Good coffee, good espresso, great pastries, awesome ambience. The coffee is not at the top of other shops. I would say the Espresso is 4 star, but the decaf is terrible. It is very sour. Proably the most sour of any coffee I have ever tasted. And they have served this decaf forever. It suggests they never taste it. Staff is great, the vibe of the place is perfect. If those elements are so good, then why serv decaf that is disgustingly bad? It makes no sense - especially for a roaster. I challenge you to do taste testing with customers. Do small samples so it does not matter if its decaf or not. Your decaf will come out at the bottom for sure. So its hard for me because I only drink half-caffeine drinks, due to a heart condition. Insomnia really could do much better. read more

This is my favorite neighborhood coffee shop! We feel really lucky to have a local spot for great coffee and fresh pastries with a cozy indoor vibe (think Central Perk from Friends). On this visit we each had our favorites - a latte and quiche and we shared a blueberry muffin - the texture and taste are absolute perfection. You cannot see this place from the street. It shares the same parking lot with Coyote Bar and Grill. It looks like this place is a mom and pop place with quirky decorations but I later found out this was a chain. They have a weird assortment of tables, benches, chairs, paintings, pictures, etc.... The other patrons look like they visit this place all the time and treat it like home. The service is slow but the food tastes great. The jalapeno bagel tasted great but was over priced. The Aztec was amazing but took a while to get. read more

This coffee shop has the slowest service of any coffee shop in a 5-mile radius. I often observed the staff chatting while working and wondered whether lack of attention to the task was slowing the service time. On one occasion, I observed that the floor looked as though it hadn't been swept in days. Nevertheless, their coffee flavor is far superior to any of their competitors, and I find myself returning again and again for their delicious coffee. The staff is always very pleasant and friendly. I suspect the reason for the slow service is simply that they tend to have a steady stream of customers and are somewhat understaffed, in which case, this is a management issue and not a reflection on the staff. Go for the coffee, but be prepared to be patient. read more

I like all Insomnia locations but I especially like the atmosphere here. It's dark and cozy. It's also next to a nice park and has some nice outdoor seating (note to self for next summer). I had my usual, a black Americano and it was very enjoyable, as they always are at Insomnia. I didn't partake this time, but they have a nice selection of pastries. And they have plenty of tables for large and small groups and some comfy spots to just sit and chill. Makes me want to open my own coffee shop someday. It would be awesome :) Now that I just discovered I can walk here, I'll be adding this location to my list of local hangouts :) read more

One of the best coffee places in the Portland area!!! The coffee is amazing and they have a friendly face each time I walk in the door. They have good seating areas and it's a great place to visit with friends, do work or study, or just hang out. It is a little pricey but I'm my opinion it's worth the money. read more

I was so intrigued by "black forest mocha", I had to ask the barista what it was. When he said "blackberry", I made a little gasp. OF COURSE, I had to order it. The subtle notes of blackberry with every sip was AMAZING. The notes were harmonious in this drink whereas one flavor didn't overpower the other. Insomnia Coffee Company was so good, my group of friends visited everyday for morning coffee (in addition to the other coffee places we had planned our trip around). Went in for a quick cup of coffee to go, paid fand was given a cup. It was 7:30am, prime time for coffee and every container was out. Let staff know. Waited and waited and waited....... I was not in a hurry so decided to do some work on my phone, literally 20 minutes later there was still no coffee but noticed a couple other customers standing around with empty cups. I let one of the customers standing there know that I have been waiting over 20 minutes, with this knowledge she went over and asked how much longer. The guy behind the counter looked embarrassed and realized they never started another one. Not the flavor I wanted but by the time the coffee was done I did not care, just needed my caffeine! Only knocked one star because while waiting I did notice people who ordered the more frou-frou drinks received theirs quickly, had lots of yummy looking pastries and staff truly looked embarrassed when they realized their mistake. Insomnia Coffee is my favorite coffee shop. The Main Street (Baseline) location hasn't changed much from when I discovered it in 2013 until now. It's always had a homey ambiance, with comfy chairs and tables, and local artists' paintings on the walls. The baristas are always friendly and welcoming. Plus, their coffee is delicious (even their decaf is rich and flavorful). Only place I know of that makes their own whipped cream in-house, and they do chocolate whip too! Only suggestion is I wish they had more options for gluten-free. They have some delicious GF cinnamon coffee cake and hand pies from Blue Moon, but they are often out of GF products. But staff seems well- informed and trained on cross-contamination and use separate utensils for GF vs non-GF items. If Insomnia offered GF bagels or bread, I would get sandwiches from them too, but they don't offer them (yet). Also, Insomnia is a bit on the expensive side, but I do feel you get bett r quality coffee. Highly recommended little place! read more

Well, I drove down to the other Main street location today, hoping for something that could be called anything other than bad coffee. Once again, coffee is over extracted and burned. Again, the vanilla latte I order my wife was just as awful, and somehow worse than my Americano.. I'm not sure how one turns vanilla syrup into pure evil, but they've managed it. To add insult to injury, I waited 45 minutes when there were only 4 cars in front of me in the drive thru. They didn't seem busy inside... Maybe the people in front of me had food orders?? I don't know, but 10+ minutes is beyond ridiculous for any drive thru. Perhaps they are short staffed, but it sure didn't seem so (4 baristas working). I'm officially done with insomnia in Hillsboro. As soon as you open the door you are greeted by a friendly staff in an overall very cool designed cafe! I had the Black Forest mocha per the barista's recommendation and it was delicious!
