I was so tired and she helped me decide on a drink. As we began talking I shared we were in town last minute as my father in law ended up in the hospital yesterday. Look... I get when customers come in minutes before closing and wanting to be done, but the hours state til 10pm. 9:39pm Tuesday (today) - I arrived hoping to get something quick ahead of closing. The best thing about this Starbucks is that it's open 24/7! Yea huh! TWENTY FOUR HOURS, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. It's got all the usual Starbucks stuff - drinks, food, tables, whatevas. I used to frequent this spot back in college because a Starbucks open all night is the bomb and remember it being packed to the brims. Well, not tonight my friends. I would say there are 20-30 of us this evening. If you're here late at night, they make you move from side to side as they mop up various areas. It's kind of funny because then everyone is shoved, cramped up on one side of the giant place while the other side is completely empty. Strange. Now right now, I'm diggin' this location because they are playing Motown music! And I lOoOoOOooOve Motown jams! I also like that there was quite enough parking outside and since it was past 10pm - FREE parking. They have some nice, cushy seats for chillaxing but also sturdy desks to get your study on! Now, this location is surrounded by bars so you can expect a few to stumble in here and there. On my most recent visit, a young fiery haired gentlemen walked in obliterated. He stood in the doorway giggling and said "Who wants to see me do a-----" and before he could finish his sentence, he tumbled to the ground. He laid there a good 20 seconds laughing before he finally got up. I never found out what exactly he wanted to show us non-wasted coffee shop chillers. This location is on the busy intersection on the northwest corner of Wells and North Ave. The space is quite large and clear to catering to people coming here to camp out and study because lots of tables and different types: Short, tall/bar, long tables. One of the best and cleanest Starbucks I've been to in any city and I've been to them all. On a cold and snowy Chicago night it was very warm and inviting. Not packed at all and within walking distance to the city's local comedy clubs. Quick service, calm atmosphere, somewhat clean environment for a highly frequented location, friendly staff, and lots of space makes for an A+ experience. It was good in my experience despite the prior complaints I've seen. There's a fireplace here that makes the place very cozy. A great place to keep warm and grab a cup of coffee in the city. Highly recommended. But be forewarned I'm not a local and this place may be different on another day. read more

Since I no longer get internet, cell service, or wireless connection at my sister's place up the street, Starbucks came to the rescue late last night. After patronizing this Starbucks for years, I understand the varying reviews on Yelp. Here is what I have seen over the past three years that I've been in the 'hood: COFFEE If I want coffee with syrup pumped into it, this is place to go. This or any other Starbucks. I haven't been able to differentiate between the various city Starbucks as far as coffee goes - which is probably exactly what they want. Mission accomplished. ATMOSPHERE This is the draw for this location. It's alive and humming with activity. People come here not just to read books, catch up on their e-mail, or study, but to meet with friends, take a break, and talk about life. Great for people watching, you can often see a cast of characters come through this place, from the beautiful to the eclectic. SEATING Some days I can find a place to sit and plug in my computer; other days it's so packed I'm lucky that the coffee line isn't out the door. On a Monday afternoon around 4pm, I was able to make myself comfy at a table. I think it's after 5pm that people who have been there all day leave to grab some dinner. Then around 6pm, the evening crowd comes in. NOTE: Be aware of people who don't mind invading your personal space while there is PLENTY of available seating. My mistake was responding "no" to a girl who asked if someone was sitting in the chair across from me at my two-person table. Arrrggghhhh... I should have said that I was waiting for someone, because she proceeded to sit down, chit chat on the phone thru her headset, and start chowing on her burrito bowl dinner from Chipotle. I wished I had my earbuds with me to tune her out... CONNECTIVITY Because of the number of people accessing their wifi, the connection is SLOW. If you're just surfing then it's fine, but forget about streaming anything. They get one more star than deserved for being 24 hrs. And that can't be easy. Cons: Maybe if management was better they would be happier maybe nicer baristas? I never saw a supervisor on the floor once the hours I spent here in the last week. Condiment bar was a mess, never once did I see anyone clean it or change the milks. Milks were warm. If you watched them make your beverage you will see the crusted up "sanitizer" rag they use to clean their steam wand every time they make a drink.. I had ordered a hot chocolate with a stick of butter at the bottom.. When I got my hot chocolate I asked if there was the butter. The barista told me no. Then asked if I was serious, told me she didn't feel like remaking it for me. After I insisted a few times, she decided to make my drink, as I requested, and as it was printed on my cup.. God forbid I asked for a lemon pound cake they forgot to give me.. It was thrown. Literally tossed onto the counter. Still in the packaging with their day dot on it.. When I asked for the little pastry bag(that they are supposed to come in) they gave me a bag with handles. When I told her that I had meant the pastry bag. Naturally I tried the app-- but it didn't list oat milk, my preferred milk n there was no place to write in any sort of preference. Easily spent a few thousand bucks here over the years. The place now looks like a HUGE FAILED DOLL HOUSE! Fire the DJ! BLARING Christmas music in APRIL!?! Even with $350 noise isolation headphones turned up, I can hear the horrible music. I couldn't imagine coming here and trying to have a conversation with someone. The music is TOO LOUD!!! Another concern: it seems there is way less seating. Losing the window seating was a CRITICAL ERROR! Starbucks should have added window seating on 3 sides of the store, not removed all of it! Strangely... I counted 4 of the small tables with trash on them for the 90 minutes I was there. Also, the tables and chairs were dragged around chaotically. It's been a few years since I had to pull an all-nighter but with budgets due the next day and the day having gone by at the Bears game (yeah, the one where we were smashed by the Patriots in the midst of the snow blizzard), my only option was checking out the 24-Hr Starbucks. I was pleasantly surprised by how serious and down-to-business the environment here was! Everyone was working and focused to accomplish something - unlike college library days where everyone was hanging out to write a paper due at 8am but really socializing with everyone they hadn't seen in a while. The place is quite spacious, decently clean (it's Sbux after all), fireplace in the center with comfy couches all around, and of course, food and drinks available readily (they can even heat up your panini)! Free steady wi-fi + plenty of power plug points = you're all set for a night of work. Knowing how many others are spending their Sunday night working diligently makes it so much easier to get in the zone. Only caveat to this place is the parking situation - street parking is hard to find and if you find it, you have to run out every two hours to feed the meters.
