This is a cheap diner. In the best way. Run by Greek folks (which is reflected in the menu), you can order just about any kind of breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's cheap, fast and furious. Star 66 Cafe, if it was legal to marry a restaurant, I'd marry you and we'd have breakfast and homemade fried chicken babies. That's how much I love you. What really started off this experience right was the fact that they are located inside of a truck-stop, which means...truck parking galore! Nothing better than finding roadside cafe's where we're actually allowed to park. Although we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table to open up (they are THAT popular), we were seated and immediately greeted by our kind waitress. Ordered two teas (which were fantastic and strong, just like I like my tea) and perused the menu. My husband decided on the "Sunrise Special" which came with fluffy biscuits and gravy, three eggs over medium and two strips of bacon. He devoured it in seconds and was full for most of the day. I overheard two other people ordering their "famous homemade fried chicken" so I followed suit and ordered the same. It was wonderful, flaky, juicy, and so delicious. Mine came with fresh corn, mashed potatoes with gravy and a warm roll. I was wary of the light brown gravy on top of the potatoes but it was awesome. I'm ordering this again! We try to go every Sunday. I'm in love with their pony shoes with a side of ranch! I feel like I get that every time we go. We always get cheese sticks to start off with, they are amazing and taste homemade. My fiance loves poached eggs, so he was excited finding out that they have them there. I placed an order through door dash, but my money was refunded do to no driver's. So I call them to ask them if they could re-run my debt card and so I could be omw to come pick it up, since I live in by Sherman il and the food was already ready. I called 4 times until a man answered the phone with me on speaker and proceeded to ask me "if I like hearing the sound of the phone ring and that I should bc now thats all I'm going to hear from now on" and continued to cuss on the other side of the phone with 2 females. One female said "I'm tired of this fucking phone ringing, I don't want to answer that fucking phone" then says the managers name (name) is gonna fucking kill me. She said that twice. I'm going to be honest, when I walked in here I was very skeptical. The menu was HUGE and had a bunch of different items ranging from pasta to fish to mexican to breakfast to all-american and when a restaurant has a menu that big it makes me think a little bit to how good all of the food can be when a restaurant is all over the place. But this place is the real deal. Restaurant was clean and whenever somebody left I noticed staff was quick to clean thoroughly to seat the next customer. Our waiter was super friendly and even though they were busy when we walked in he checked in on us often to get us whatever we needed. Just a side note, the menu said they charged for refills on soft drinks but I was not charged and I got 4 refills so just ask if that is something you do not want to pay extra. I ordered the burger ponyshoe (burger on a piece of bread with fries and covered in cheese sauce) and my mother ordered the pigs in a blanket (pancakes with sausage in the middle). We also ordered an appetizer of onion rings, cheese sticks, and fried mushrooms. The food came out relatively quickly as well. My order also came with a bowl of french onion soup. Pros: French Onion Soup had a lot of flavor to it and a decent amount of croutons and onions in the bowl and came with a ton of crackers Fried Mushrooms and Onion Rings were fried really nicely and had a lot of flavor to them My mom really enjoyed her meal but there was so much she had to get a to go box (not a bad problem at all) My ponyshoe had a lot on it (thank goodness I didn't order the horseshoe) and the cheese sauce definitely had a lot of flavor to it and the burger was seasoned nicely There was a lot of food and the meal all together was around 25 dollars for drinks, 2 entrees, and an appetizer which to me is a really good deal considering how much food we ended up getting. My mom ordered something to go and didn't want french fries which come with the meal so they actually took off for the fries which I have never seen another establishment do which was super nice Cons (not really cons but just me being nitpicky): Cheese Sticks were fine, they had flavor but not a lot of it. I was not a fan of the marinara sauce and I don't know if it's premade or made on site but it was probably the worst part of the meal The french onion soup did not have any cheese on it, which bummed me out but a traditional french onion does have cheese on it (as far as I know). It was super good without it still Burger was slightly too tough on my ponyshoe (definitely not tough enough to ruin the meal just slightly and was barely noticeable) Just to reiterate the burger did have a lot of flavor and was seasoned nicely Overall, I really enjoyed my trip to the Star 66 Cafe and definitely will be back. I definitely want to try the pies they had on display when you walk in or their milkshakes but I was so stuffed I could not eat anymore! I'm going to give it 5 stars and even though I had some nitpicks (mainly the marinara sauce) the rest of the food was so good and the staff was very friendly, fast, and clean so I'm going to give it a 4.5 and round it up to 5! read more

If you're in the area, or planning on stopping through Springfield, don't bother with other places that make you feel like questioning your life choices 20 minutes after eating their food. Come here and rejoice in palate pleasure! I recommend the Corned Beef Melt. It's corned beef....who doesn't love that (maybe Communists, PETA members, and guys that drive lifted trucks to compensate)?!! The fries are tasty and the salad was fresh. I always check the local stops on drives down 55. This cafe adjoins a truck stop, and was packed on a Friday night. Could've been the all-you-can-eat walleye, which was a no-brainer for this fan, and the best walleye I can remember having. Fresh, firm, flaky and flavorful. Service was top notch, quick and polite, the staff seemed to know every other customer that walked in the door. Over the top: one of the managers comes out of the kitchen with a pan full of homemade biscuits - gratis! Can't wait to visit again! read more

We had the Monday special: chicken fried steak with real mashed potatoes, green beans, salad of lettuce with 1 tomato slice & 1 cucumber slice and a roll. We ordered the cream gravy; it was homemade. The meal was flavorful & warm when it was served. The steak looked like frozen though it said hand breaded on the menu. It was a thin cut & was larger than a saucer but not quite as big as a salad plate. For dessert, we ordered apple pie, warmed, with vanilla ice cream. The pie was a large slice & was homemade! It was FULL of apples & tasted delicious!! The crust was a homemade flaky one with cinnamon & sugar sprinkled on top when it was baked. It came with a large scoop of ice cream & this really made the whole meal so much better! Pricing here is average. It's a family owned small business & we will be back!! read more

Once seated our server, Brandy guided us through the wonderfully large menu by first asking what we felt like eating. We ended up splitting two meals-the Ruben and the Gyro. Both were tasty, warm, and good portion sizes. Both the French fries and hash browns were fabulously cooked, crunchy, not greasy, and the taste Yum. I've never had French onion soup without the cheese until now...it's great. And the croutons in the soup were so freshly added they were crunchy. Brandy was excellent in serving us. Attentive without hovering. I hope to return soon. Thanks to Yelp for the reviews. I'm not sure a truck stop diner would have been my first choice, but this food was fresh, well prepared, and so much better than any chain restaurant I've been to. read more

Took a party of six here this past weekend. We each got something very different, from breakfast to Italian to sandwiches. Everyone was very happy with their food. I had eggs and chorizo and it was delicious. The service was excellent, the portions were more than generous (we got four boxes for left overs) and the prices were very good. We will be eating here again, kind of an old truckstop atmosphere. Very good food at a great price. read more

The food was great I had a buffalo chicken horseshoe.... And they gave out free biscuits that where delicious! However! I had to ask the waitress 3 times to bring me a refill and our food including the appetizer was brought out together so the table was a mess... Stopped here for lunch and loved it! It was packed, but we managed to get a table fairly quick. I ordered the fried chicken and it's as good as everyone says. The cream of chicken and rice was ok too. Husband ordered the breakfast burrito and also like it. He didn't like the American fries though. They were like mushed together baked potato. He thought they were going to be actual fries. I got a slice of strawberry cheesecake to go and so glad I did. We ate it halfway into our drive back home. Soo very good!! Our first visit here and in my opinion, it didn't live up to the hype. It was a little busy but nothing to overwhelming. We were seated right away. The interior decor is pretty dated but cozy. Our waiter was quick to greet us. As other have stated, the menu is quite extensive. We started with the appetizer basket (7 fried mushrooms, 7 onion rings, 7 cheese sticks). The cheese sticks are really good and the marinara sauce was GREAT! I ordered the Smothered Chicken with mashed potatoes and salad. My partner got the hamburger horseshoe. Our salad came out and consisted of lettuce, 2 cherry tomatoes, and 1 cucumber slice. Pretty plain, but okay. Food came quickly. Bf's horseshoe was MASSSIVE, more than enough for 2 people or more. Friend got the chicken strip salad. Good, but a little heavy on the onions. Portions are large as is expected, and they must have barrels of ranch dressing in the back considering how much they give you (might be a Midwest thing).
