I believe the owner (or possibly the chef) stopped by and made sure everything was up to par as well. I honestly thought it was going to be a much smaller space as when I'd driven by it looked small, but there was so much seating inside! The decor was beautiful, too, and the music was awesome. We both had chicken and waffles and my LORD it was so good! The waffles were so crispy and flavorful (I've seriously never had waffles so good in my life) and the chicken was breaded well, perfectly seasoned, and was super fresh. I'm pretty picky about sweet tea. If Wilford Brimley doesn't side eye me with serious concern as I drink it then don't even bother. This was so perfectly southern sweet I was in heaven. Sweetest sweet tea I've had in Illinois. I'd go back for that alone even if the food was just okay. We had decided on fried green tomatoes (which were soooooo dang good and zesty!) when she told us they JUST got fried okra and I said both. Just give us both. I'm a fried okra fiend and was so happy I could've cried. The okra was fresh and perfectly crispy, and the seasonings, again, were immaculate. Absolutely cannot wait to go back. This place is absolutely incredible. Drove through Springfield and stopped here a couple days ago…read more Took a gamble and I am so happy I did, I will come back here on my way back from Chicago. My husband and I both ordered large grilled chicken teriyaki bowls. First of all, an absolutely enormous portion of food and meat for $10, you can't beat it. This would easily be a double meat bowl at chipotle next door for almost double that price. With our bowls, we had the option of veggies, white rice, noodles, and fried rice. I chose veggies and noodles and my husband chose white rice and veggies. Lots of flavor and very clean! The service was great and there are tables to sit at inside. The music failed to inspire, some variation of high bass and quiet lyrics was the only sound that overcame the drone of the kitchen. Other pop music filtered in as I wrote the review. I went ahead and ordered the Katsu bowl out of curiosity. I was already here after all. I was nervous as I watched the cook say something about the cabbage to the man at the register. Whatever her message was did not reach me. What did reach me was an incredibly mediocre dish. The biggest problem was the cuts on the food. For a store loathe to provide more than a plastic fork, everything was cut far too large. I wish I had taken a picture of the obscenely cut cabbage. It came in a couple squares so obscene in size that it dwarfed everything else in the already ridiculously cut meal. This includes the giant slices of meat that I can only presume is meant to be chewed off in sections due to the aforementioned lack of sturdy cutlery. Taste wise it fails to deliver. The vegetables aren't seasoned. The chicks egg roll has the misfortune of tasting eerily similar to country fried stake, complete with the overt pepperiness expected of the gravy. The chicken is fried adequately but the sauces failed to do anything more than soften and soak it. Flavor wise it was somewhere between dull and disappointing. Even the local fly seemed uninterested in my dish. For fifteen dollars there are better options. A few onions were pulled from the bowl as a more modest example of the cut inconsistency

I wanted to watch the Michigan wolverines game so I called down there and spoke to a really nice woman, who ended up being my bartender when I got there. I was originally going to go to four stars, but they are getting five because the bartender told me that they would change the channel for me at whatever TV I was sitting at so I could watch my game! I sat at the bar naturally after being greeted by the really nice hostess. Now generally I despise this state outside of rural areas because the people here are just menacingly rude and judgmental. That being said, walking to the bar, all of the afternoon patrons in there were casting looks at me that could tame a rabid polar bear. Already dealing with that in other parts throughout the state, I just sat there and smiled as they stared and judged. Anyhow, my first bartender, I never caught her name, but she was excellent! Took really good care of me. Shift change in the middle of my visit, and my second bartender was jennifer, she was equally as delightful! I ordered fried okra for an appetizer when I got there, drank some beers, had a couple VERY well proportioned glasses of whiskey and watched my game. Come suppertime, I turned around to see the crowd and the entire restaurant was completely packed! And the personalities of the people that I interacted with at this point were a complete 180. SUPER nice people. For supper I ordered the ribeye, rare. I first cut into it and it looked medium, but sometimes steak just Cooks quicker in certain areas, but outside of the end piece that was cooked perfectly. I had a loaded baked potato which was seasoned great, and green beans and I had blackberry cobbler for dessert, per the recommendation of my bartender. Right through the doors, they have gaming, and a few slot machines also, if that's your thing. I really enjoyed the decorum, and the place was really clean, even the bathrooms. It's not very often that I would return to a restaurant in the state, but this is definitely worth revisiting if I'm ever back in the area! ***DISCLAIMER*** This pure, uncut, honest review is federally protected under Federal Law by way of Bill #EO14149. Each platter (correct word!) was stuffed with awesome, tasty food! Amongst the four of us, we had some sweet and some savory options, and we all tried each others! We all agreed - the food was delicious! When the bill came and printed at the bottom was a number less than $100, less than $50, I almost lost my mind! We were STUFFED to the gills with awesome diner fare, and our bill was barely $40! How did this happen? I pray this place is somehow eeking out a profit, as I seriously can't remember getting so much awesome food for so little cost in a sit-down restaurant.
