I was really concerned by the appearance of the exterior because it was connected to a gas station/truck stop. But once you enter, it is a bustling, family diner. I could tell I picked the right place, because it was packed and people seemed happy. Service was excellent, friendly, and fast. Soda refills were done quickly and old dishes removed just as fast. In a display case at the entrance, a large assortment of pies welcomed us and looked mouthwatering. I tried the Key Lime Pie. It was so-so. I ordered the Boneless Pork Chop Special (Cajun) which came with soup or salad. I chose the cabbage soup. And it was one of the best soups I have had in the past few years. Highly recommend it! I could have ordered bowls and bowls of it and been plenty satisfied. What shocked me were the prices. I received 3 (Three!) boneless pork chops and a soup for only $12.99. I was expecting 1 or 2 maximum in this economy. The pork chops were a good size, a little dry on the inside, but the flavor on the outside was decent. My coworker purchased the horseshoe and was impressed that there were 2 cheeseburger patties (instead of just 1) piled high with cheese fries. Editing review and downgrading to 4 stars after second visit. ..rating may even go lower ...this time I got the meatloaf which seemed like frozen and not homemade....it was not tender but more rubbery....not a fan of it at all. .the mashed potatoes were extremely light ...I am guessing they are the powdered variety...my meal also came with a salad and it was probably the most basic salad I ever got...one slice on cucumber..yes I said one, lol...and one slice of tomato...yes I said one, lol...and that's it on iceberg lettuce...seems like this place cuts corners.... This diner is part of a truck stop and therefore, has plenty of parking. We stopped for lunch and this place was busy. The staff was constantly moving and it seemed never had the chance to rest. With that being said, our server was friendly and attentive. Hubby had the meatloaf special and said it was ok - he prefers more of a meatloaf texture and not a meatloaf patty. I ordered the mushroom swiss burger. I was impressed that the sandwiches all came with fries plus soup or salad. The salad is iceberg with a cucumber slice and a cherry tomato. It's not fancy, but it's a nice portion size. I thought the burger was good and had plenty of mushrooms. The fries are crinkle cut and mine were ok, but could have been fried just a bit longer to give them some color. It's a solid diner choice and their menu is massive. This is an old style truck stop diner with classic American breakfast, lunch and supper options in a comfortable, lounge-like atmosphere. Other than enjoying a throwback to 60s/70s Americana before "travel plazas" took over the interstates I found Star 66 unremarkable. My takeout was a club sandwich, fried mushrooms, and vanilla milkshake. The mushrooms were wonderfully hot but bland because the breading lacked much seasoning. I'd passed on dipping sauce because dipping is challenging while driving. (No judgement--yes, I know better than to eat while driving but still do it.) A diner like this doesn't offer dining adventure so the sandwich was a typical turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato combination with mayo on toast. Sustenance--nothing more. The milkshake tasted like a low grade ice cream was used. Because shrooms didn't substitute for fries this combo at $18+ without tip seemed a bit high for 3 items. If I were just rating the food I would give this restaurant 5 stars. The lasagna was the best I think I have ever had. I live near The Hill in south St Louis which is the Italian section of our city and this lasagna even tops the finest restaurants there. It had all the right components, cheesy, saucy, meaty, bursting with flavor. It came with a side salad with homemade ranch dressing and a slice of garlic toast for $8.49 (unheard of). My friend ordered 1/2 fried chicken which is the restaurants claim to fame. That chicken looked and smelled delicious. It also had all of the right components, crispy skin, juicy meat, seasoned perfectly. It came with soup or salad, he chose the chicken noodle soup that was homemade and real good. The sides were mashed potatoes which were real mashed potatoes, however not seasoned well and were watery and green beans, again no seasoning there either. But the star was the chicken so it is easy to overlook the lack of seasoning on the sides. Now for the downside, all four of the wait staff were behind the counter bad mouthing the other employees that were not present. I don't really need to hear the politics of the restaurant. Seems there is discontentment with the employees. One of the waitresses said "I'm not going to lick anyone's a$$", really???? I'm eating here. Even though our waitress was in on the gossip, she was VERY friendly and curtious at our table and I do appreciate that. The decor was old dated country truckstop diner, which is what I expected but hey I even liked that. Reminds me of days gone by. Sooo.......about facades.......don't look past this gem or it's your loss and yours only! Whenever you get into any town,anywhere.....the key is to find out where the locals are eating at! Well I got to this Truck stop and ran out of hours and what a blessing in disguise! The truck stop had very clean amenities and actually accepted my fuel card! The diner next door epitomized what all diners truly aspire to be and yet fail constantly to achieve! From the outside it really doesn't look like much and the hand written special's might put you off a bit but don't be fooled! From the awesome attitudes and service of the waitstaff,to the full menu that serves everything all day, to the kitchen staff that adds a generous sprinkling of love into every order that comes out of their pass through window! I was here for a day and a half and was never disappointed, everything I ordered was perfectly cooked and prepared! This is the diner of all diner's and you have to experience this for yourself! Just a heads up, it's gonna be crowded and you'll most likely have to wait to be seated but expect to be shown the art of customer service and cooking that will remind you of Grandma's kitchen! The food here is nothing to brag about. It's basic. Ordered my RIBEYE steak cooked medium and it came chewy as can be MORE than well done. The cut definitely was sirloin not ribeye. Ordered my eggs scrambled with cheese they just slapped a piece of square cheese on it and called it what it was. I was puzzled when I opened my toast there was packs of jelly on top that had been god only knows where so I couldn't eat that. To seal the deal when I came in to pick up my takeout I waited for the guy ahead of me to order then I approached the counter and after a couple minutes I was shewed to the side so who I assume was the owner could cash out a white consumer. Amazing and impressive!!! Drove by this place yesterday on the way up north and pretty much didn't give it a thought as it was part of a truck stop. However, this place happen to come up on my Yelp when looking for a place to grab dinner on the way back south. So glad we stopped!! The staff was VERY nice and attentive. Our waitress was so sweet and such a hard worker. We had the sausage and egg omelette (with hash browns and toast) and chicken tender meal with green beans, baked potato and side salad. Everything was amazing!!! We will definitely be back as we can't wait to give this place our business and enjoy their extensive and yummy menu!! read more
