Food Service Ambiance Just happened to be riding by and decided to check it out. I'm a Horseshoe fanatic, so I had to try theirs. I went with the pork tenderloin "pony"shoe, and it was more than enough. My only issue was that I prefer white cheese sauce, and they serve the beer cheese sauce. While our waitress was friendly, the atmosphere was average and the food was a major letdown. * The Caesar salad was overly dressed and tasted extremely sour. * The ribeye steak ($30) was undercooked, overly seasoned, and mostly fat. * When we mentioned the issue with the steak (still on the plate missing one awful bite now in a napkin), there was no effort to make it right. no discount, nothing. Just an apology and our waitress telling us "I'll tell the kitchen". That's it. Full bill. In the end, we paid over $100 for a meal we didn't enjoy. We won't be coming back to this location. The server was excellent. She was cheerful and knowledgeable. Recommended specials. I rated it low because I got the cheese fry appetizer and it was not great. A bare sprinkling of cheese. What cheese there was was crispy. The bacon was overdone. The ranch was nice. My husband got a pulled pork sandwich and it was good. And Mac and cheese bites which he loved. I asked if I could order from the kids menu because of this, and I was told no by the server but only because the owners daughter was present. My server was completely accommodating. I also ordered chili, but they were out. I wound up with potato soup and a grilled cheese, and I still couldn't eat it all. Stopped at this place on the recommendation of the hotel staff. Great decision. My wife ordered the "pony"size horseshoe sandwich with buffalo chicken. It is an open face sandwich with buffalo chicken covered with fries and smothered with cheddar cheese sauce. Heart attack on a plate. I ordered a fried half-a-chicken with potato salad and home style green beans, on the menu as fried chicken dinner. When our food came, my wife remarked that she was glad she only ordered the "pony" size and not the full sized. The sandwich was massive. She wasn't able to finish it. It was very flavorful and much more than she could eat. As for my meal, the attached was taken the first time I came up for air. There is no after picture because it wasn't pretty. Very tender and well seasoned pieces of chicken. The green beans and potato salad were also very good. It made me think I was at home in Louisiana but was reminded I wasn't when I noticed the outside temp of 40 degrees. The person(s) that helped with our orders were very friendly with an overall positive attitude about everything. Very easy to be comfortable in those place and enjoy some great food. Solid diner type of place. I'm sure Abe would've liked it! Our server was super nice and efficient. The iced tea was nice - not too strong, not too weak with refill offers including 'Can I get you a to go cup?' NICE! For my lunch, I went with the hand pounded/ breaded, fried pork tenderloin on my choice of bread, Texas toast. It also can be done grilled. Sandwiches in general come with fries but for a little upcharge, you can substitute a few other things. I subbed for their permanent on menu cream of tomato soup. The server said soups are homemade and the soup of the day was beer cheese. That tomato soup was REALLY FANTASTIC - likely the best cream of tomato I've had anywhere! The sandwich was huge, and very good as well. I would definitely get that again. The menu mentions a pork tenderloin sauce on request which I skipped but would def try next time. Dipping the sandwich in the soup was delish! Hubs got the chicken sandwich with buffalo sauce which was just 'meh' - a decent but forgettable frozen breaded patty. He also got the fries that have a light coating on them making them really crispy - again these were just ok, nothing to get too excited about imo. read more

Only went once about 3 years ago since I moved back to the poor side of town off Dirksen and looking for good restaurants but alas not really any except red lobster. It went for Friday night fish walleye...so salty and with a Skelton fish not much meat. My girlfriend and I rolled into to town to visit some friends. They suggested Abe's Hideout. If a horseshoe is on the menu then there's an 80% I'll order it. When I'm in Springfield that number jumps to 90%. It is the home of horseshoes after all. Abe's has horseshoes so that's what I ordered. I was optimistically caution going in to my first bite of my horseshoe. Our friend said he liked it more D'Arcy's Pint. I consider it the gold standard of horseshoes. I ordered the classic hamburger horseshoe. It is an above average horseshoe. The cheese is what makes or breaks the horseshoe. The cheese did not taste like it came out of a can. Huge plus! Their Mac‐cheese Bites were fire! If I gave ratings based on one menu item then they'd get the 5er. This is random but I felt I had to mention it. The restroom is not far enough away from the seating area. If someone goes in the restroom and blows it up then you might just hear it. Maybe not. I just know I'll try not to be seated right near there. read more

We both got the 12oz Prime Rib special cooked medium. The steaks were cooked perfectly bot the skin on the outer edge was tough and it was not very hot. Good tea: some places just can't make good iced tea and this was a nice surprise! The grilled chicken sandwich and fries with cheese sauce was excellent. It was also a nice surprise that the cheese sauce wasn't unreasonably uncharged. I also had changes to the sandwich and it came out exactly as ordered. Reasonably quick and hot! Very good and filling. The Buffalo chicken wrap is also recommended! Considering inflation, this was very reasonably priced and for 2 meals it was under $30. Would definitely return. read more

The waitress was very nice and talkative/personable. Since we aren't from the area we certainly didn't mind. The food was good as well. We tried the cheese curds which tasted close to the real things. The breading was different. I had the taco salad and that was very good. The tortilla shell bowl is actually quite yummy.
