I'm definitely not a sweet person in the morning, I prefer eggs and savory items, but I was in the mood for a little sweet on the side and my boyfriend (HUGE sweet tooth) is always down for that. He ordered the chicken and waffles, which he really enjoyed! I ordered an the feta omelet, which was huge. The feta was really flavorful and tasted like good quality. I like that it came with a bagel although I didn't need a bagel at all (ended up having half). We shared 1 pancake and I honestly wish I had just ordered the pancake because it was THAT good! We came in on New Years Eve. Parking was easy in the lot behind the building. The first two hours are free during the week. We were seated right away, but the place as pretty full. I always love seeing/overhearing return customers. Our waitress was extremely friendly. Later, an older couple sat down. Right away, the waitress repeated their order. Apparently they are regulars, and the waitress got it right. I went to Stacks expecting the same quality dining experience that I have had at their Burlingame location. What a disappointment! I would have given it the lowest, single star rating but I did think the hostess and server were friendly. The $19.88 I spent for a bagel with lox and cream cheese and a cup of coffee would have been tolerable if the interior was clean and new but it is sadly tired and worn. The worst part of the whole experience was the bathroom. Not only is it down in a the basement - it is dingy and gross and it LACKS soap AND hot water - which means the employees CANNOT properly wash their hands - eeeewww! read more

After coming here again, I decided I was sick of bland frittatas and overpriced eggs. I think I've finally found something I like here. Surprise! It's not breakfast food. It's actually a burger. I love their Patty Melt. It comes on rye bread, is well-seared and very soft, and the fries are oh-so-crispy. The cheese is perfectly melted and it has that lick-your fingers quality you want in a good burger. This doesn't really change anything I said in my last review. The lines are still long, you're crammed in like sardines, and the menu is probably two pages too long. But now that I've found something I like here, the place deserves an upgrade. If you find their other offerings lacking like I did, give the Patty Melt a shot! read more

My family & I came today for Mother's Day & our party of 7 was seated within 35-40min (which is GREAT for Mother's Day). The Louis Benedict was with crab, but you can really tell it's just imitation crab with a fishy smell to it. - CARNITAS PANCAKES: I can't remember the actual name of this dish, but I have to say this tasted AMAZING. I have been here so many times I cannot believe I haven't written a review about this great breakfast place. I have tried almost all the omelettes and they are all huge and pretty tasty. Their coconut macadamia pancakes are so good. Huge portion that I think 2-3 people can share this huge pancake. The service is fast and friendly. Only thing I don't like about this joint here is the bathroom. You have to go all the way to the back of the bldg to get there and when I used it , it was quite dirty. One suggestion: maybe build a bathroom in the restaurant?? This place is huge and gets packed. It would help if you had a bathroom inside the restaurant. read more

It came out with soggy bread, no flavor and cold french fries. We also ordered pancakes that had a strange taste, flimsy and cold. When we got the bill, we were charged $5 for the syrup (which you would think would be included considering it was pancakes.) I was craving for waffle and wanted to try something different. I've been meaning to try this location for a long time...perfect timing! It's almost noon when we arrived here and we're so hungry. I was glad that we didn't have to wait for that long. When I looked at the menu, they have too many choices to choose from. That's hard for me! They have waffles, crepe, pancake to die for (according to reviews) and lots of healthy options as well. I ended up having a crab crepe. Damn, it's a crepe filled with fresh crab, melted cheese, and avocado. Perfect for me! The sauce that comes with it was quite yum and big bonus taste. Husband got their short stack of famous banana macadamia coconut pancake - so I was able to get a bite. It's very tasty too, I liked it. I wish they mentioned that I have the option to change my bagel to pancake, for I would go for pancake instead of a bagel. Perhaps, next time. I'll come back here sometime and will try their waffle. Overall, a decent place to eat breakfast. Nothing too spectacular, but you can't go too wrong with an old fashioned breakfast platter. Location: The place is pretty damn big and there's a decent amount of parking in the streets, but it is Menlo Park so sometimes parking can be difficult. Decor: Nothing special, just your typical diner. I do like how clean everything was and the bathroom smelled clean and fresh (which is in itself a blessing.) Food: I ordered the eggs florentine and my boyfriend ordered a skillet. One thing I would suggest is ask what ingredients are included. My boyfriend hates onions, and in the skillet it listed the majority of the ingredients but didn't include onion. If you're going to include most the ingredients why not go for all? Anyway if you're allergic/ highly dislike any particular ingredient, don't trust the menu and just ask. I really enjoyed my eggs florentine and the spinach was fresh. A definite bonus to have fresh ingredients. The skillet was mediocre, nothing particularly great. There wasn't any real depth of flavor behind it, just seemed like a messy amalgam of ingredients. Again, though, the ingredients were clearly fresh which was a plus. I've also tried the Eggs Louis, which has crab meat in addition to the spinach and English muffin. I really didn't like it. The crab meat was obviously not fresh and the combination of flavors weren't attractive to me. My palate was unhappy with the result. I tried it because of my love for the Crab Cakes benedict from Bill's Cafe, but these two are worlds apart. Service: Our waitress was polite and speedy; she did check up on us once and refilled my hot chocolate. She gave us the check early, which I love, since that means I don't have to flag her down and get the bill, then flag her again to have it paid. What I got was a flat egg-pancake like thing completely doused in American cheese and sour cream (what? why?). I am willing to drive almost 20 minutes for Stacks even when there are plenty of pancake places closer to home. Their pancakes are really that good. I also like their selection of Benedict. My family and I like to order a whole bunch of stuff and share. We always get the banana, coconut, & macadamia nut pancakes. They are stuffed with goodness and don't even need syrup. I love the mimosas that you get to mix yourself. I can't think of anything that we've ever ordered that I didn't care for. Even when it is busy, tables open up quickly. I have had good experiences with almost all of the staff. There was one seating hostess that got weird on me and I was irritated by her lack of professionalism over a mistake that should have been taken care of with a simple apology rather than putting off blame, but I was pleased to find that the manager dealt with the issue quietly and to my satisfaction. I cannot rave highly enough about the banana macadamia & coconut pancake stack! Usually, I can only take a couple bites of a pancake before I am sick of it and feel the carb overload, but these are really different. The banana pieces keep it moist and the nuts are very fragrant. A short stack comes with 2 but they are huge in circumference. If you get other entrees, it's enough for 3-4 people to share. Free coffee while you wait on weekends (you still have to pay for coffee ordered when seated at table). The other dishes were ok - not super spectacular but not bad either. I would have normally given 3 stars but the banana macadamia pancakes bump it up to a 4. The restroom situation here is not ideal. Its located in the garage and you have to go out of restaurant and down the elevator to get to it. It's a bit grungy and I am surprised that this family restaurant has been able to get away with this for so long - guess it's a testament to how good their pancakes are! read more

After 2 enjoyable visits to the sister location in Burlingame, I decided to check out the Menlo Park locale before a rigorous round of shoe shopping at Hillsdale with my sister, Hannah. This decision was heavily influenced by the especially heinous (that's a L&O "SVU" inside thing) line at Borrone's. No matter! Per my other experiences at the "other" Stacks, I had no wait. We were seated immediately. Sadly, the expectant pitcher of water was missing but that situation was quickly rectified. Our waitress (i.e., wait person, staff, server, attendant, stewardess) was attentive and gracious. She was very helpful with my selection of eggs over medium. I need yolk but I also need the whites to be cooked, you know? And each kitchen varies so these things need to be discussed. We perused our menus and made our choices, while a baby at the next table flirted with us, much to his parents' relief, I'm sure! We distracted him so they could get some food down their gullets. Anyhoo, I digress. Hannah ordered the Veggie Sandwich, which comes with their "great potatoes," fresh fruit and a salad. Portions were very generous and the sandwich, which is comprised of avocado, tomatoes, sprouts and cream cheese on whole wheat bread, looked delicious. H, who normally splits meals with her husband, managed to down the entire sandwich, the salad and some of the fruit. The potatoes were unnecessary to the meal. I ordered a Skillet, which comes in, of all things, a skillet! It's their signature potatoes (I think this is a fancy phrase for home fries), then you add your choice of toppings-they have like 7 or 8 I think-then topped with cheddar-jack cheese. Served with your choice of two eggs (over medium, to blend the yolk with the skillet contents), and a bagel. Plus, a small fresh-squeezed orange juice. The OJ was amazingly tasty. The bagel? Completely unnecessary. My topping choices were sausage and mushroom, and the whole thing was dee-tasty. The cheese had that nice crust around the skillet-it was all highly edible. The portion was big; I left some uneaten. That's okay. FACTOIDS: For me, the bill, including tax and tip, came to $15.00. For Hannah, I think it was more like $11.00, since she didn't order a drink. The bathroom is not in the restaurant, but you go down a couple of hallways, take an elevator down one level, and voila! I parked in the Menlo Park Center beneath Kepler's (yeah, my bad, whatever). My sister, who actually shopped at Kepler's (upon my request), also parked at the MPC garage, but she exceeded the parking limit of two hours. Her bad. If we hadn't, I'm sure the parking would have been miserable. It was a gorgeous day yesterday. TIP: The restaurant is open until 2:30pm. They serve breakfast all day! read more

WOW!!! So first I'd like to thank our waiter Mario LOL!!!! Mario was the bomb (do people still say that? HA!). The service was off the hook (is that better?). Mario was so genuinely nice. The other waiters and waitresses were also good. At one point I tried to get his attention and another waiter turned around to help. IMAGINE THAT!! I am not a breakfast person so I was the only one to order a sandwich. I had the crab panini....... WHOA!!! I had what they called hash browns with it but the hash browns had so much seasoning and they were big strips of potatoes not little (look at the picture I posted). Rissa had some banana something or other pancake and P had some scrambled good stuff but mine was the best so it doesn't matter what they had. I've posted pictures of what they had just so they would feel important about getting a shout out in my review. N E Ways...I was so full after eating half of my sandwhich that I had to pack the other half up along with some of the hash browns. As soon as I got to my desk I stuffed the rest in my face. Pancakes and waffles that I can honestly say I will have cravings for... om nom nom. I was a little reluctant about coming here since it had a wide spread of reviews, but I decided to order something off the menu that was pancake/waffle related due to this place being called stacks, and hey, I had a fabulous experience. I got to try the blueberry pancakes and the chocolate waffle and both were spectacular. I looooove that they use real blueberries in their pancakes, and each bite was a burst of flavor. I also was a huge fan of the fact that the chocolate waffle wasn't too overpowering in its chocolate chip-ness. Sometimes with chocolate themed breakfasts they go a bit overboard and you get tired of the flavor after a few bites, but the ratio was excellent and I would highly recommend it. They have the best breakfast sausage ever! My eggs were a bit on the skimpy side, but they were fine. The potatoes were delicious and well seasoned. And of course, the bagel was yummy too, and while pre-buttered, surprisingly lacking in butter. I docked them one star for the service. There was a bit of a wait, even at 1pm on a Sunday afternoon, but then it took over 25 minutes for our food to be served. And it's not like it was a complicated order: I got my basic breakfast and my friends got waffles with sides of eggs and ham. Those aren't hard to make! Also, it took me a while to wave down a server to get additional butter. Back again!.. Third time in a week. My gf and I love their banana macadamia nut and coconut pancakes. So far out favorite. We've also had the eggs Benedict and florentine which were amazing. Lite but flavorful hollandaise sauce with a lightly browned English muffin to give a nice crunch and a good size, hearty piece of ham. The chorizo egg scramble was good. I have very mixed feelings about Stacks. Some of it I love, other parts not so much. I overall enjoy the experience but find it a little too pricey to frequent. The hash browns are fantastically crispy, and I love the outer crunch of the wheat germ pancakes. They give you a LOT of cottage cheese for a side order and I'm a big fan of places that give you the pitcher of water for self serve. I guess my gripes have really been with specific dishes. Wasn't really a big fan of regular chicken strips as half of the Chicken and Waffle special, and South of the Border was one of the most underwhelming breakfast burritos I've had in recent memory. Many of my friends nearby cite Stacks as the best breakfast place nearby. I think they're definitely wrong given all the other options in Menlo Park, but the food isn't bad. Crepe batter is a bit too egg-y Crab Omelette (~$14): "Guaranteed to blow your mind... every time!" - Queen. I had the veggie skillet and I went in around 1030 am on a Thursday. Positives: staff was super quick and VERY friendly!! I was stoked when the waitress left the coffee pot on my table so I can keep refilling on my own. Stacks is a great place to get brunch in Menlo Park. On weekends there's pretty much a guaranteed wait of 20-30 minutes, but Stacks is considerate enough to keep its customers' thirst quenched while they wait :D They have some cold water, iced tea and coffee outside the restaurant. First thing I wanted to do when I got in was wash my hands. This turned out to be more difficult than it needed to be. First you need to get a token from the cashier at the front. Next you have to walk to the back of the restaurant. Then you take the elevator one floor down. The elevator opens from the other side. You go down another hallway and finally get to the bathroom door. Put in your token and then you're g2g. Good luck finding your way back to the restaurant. Quite the journey just to wash my hands. The menu items are pretty expensive (most are $14-$18), but the portions are large. I definitely recommend taking advantage of the weekend specials if you're there on the weekend, just not the chicken and waffles (it looks like something you would freeze and microwave). I got the Savory Pancakes Carnitas and it was really good! They even gave me my own little container of syrup, which I pretended was better than the syrup they already had on the table (it was likely the same maple syrup, haha--my friends fell for it). Overall, the food was yummy, but some of the menu options look pretty basic (they pay almost no attention to the presentation of the food) and they overcharge. Also, be careful--if you split the check, the suggested tip will be a percentage of the overall total, not the amount you're paying.
