I made my way to Stacks after searching for breakfast food and seeing the decent Yelp reviews. Having been to most of the brunch spots in the area (Hobee's, Mike's, Joanie's, St. Michael's), I thought Stacks might be a nice change of pace. I guess I should have lowered my expectations given that a) it's a chain and b) it's not named after a person like all the brunch places I love.
In all seriousness, upon entering, my first thoughts definitely lingered toward IHOP or Denny's. It just has a decor and service staff that mimics those institutions that are sprawled across the United States. But we were in Menlo Park! And close to 2, maybe 3, excellent brunch spot competitors. I decided to withhold my snobby thoughts and let the food speak for itself.
Our service was prompt and unlike those who complained of a wait, we were seated immediately (on a weekday). The menu was indeed extensive and I had a hard time deciding what to order. I'm a big omelet and skillet fan and there were definitely a few items that could fit that bill.
After some debate, we decided to order the chicken apple sausage frittatta and a banana, Macadamia Nut, coconut pancake stack. For a beverage, I went with a large fresh squeezed orange juice.
The food came out within about 10-15 minutes with the pancakes arriving first. My LARGE orange juice ($2.95) was kind of puny....it made me wonder the size of the REGULAR, but it was fresh squeezed and did taste pretty good. I made a mental note to just buy a gallon of Odwalla from Safeway the next time I had a fresh juice craving.
The pancakes were quite good and covered with generous amounts of all the toppings. A nice dollop of butter was on top and warm syrup was the perfect touch. The half stack, which we ordered, was huge. I'm not sure exactly who eats whole stack orders, since we could barely finish the half stack.
My chicken apple sausage frittata came out significantly later, which I found a bit disappointing. The dish itself wasn't much better. It came with a bagel and a side of hash browns. When I asked if I could have some cream cheese to spread on the bagel, the server told me there was jam to the side. I then asked again if there was cream cheese and he asked if I was sure I wanted it. I said that'd be great if they had any. They did and he brought some back shortly. Little did I know but the fact that he asked me if I was sure I wanted it was code speak for "we charge for that." $1.15 for cream cheese to spread on half a bagel. I didn't complain because he had asked me twice, but I still thought this was lame.
The hash browns with the omelet were pretty pathetic. Rather than the nice crispy and tasty flavor hash browns are known for, this bunch seemed as if they had been cooked much earlier and simply added to my order. Given how many orders come with hash brown, I wouldn't be surprised if the place cooks huge vats beforehand and just scoops it out as sides.
The chicken apple sausage was ok, but the rest of the fritatta really was not to my liking. The first negative was the onions. When I think of a skillet or something baked, I tend to think of all items being warm and well cooked. The onions on the inside of the omelette were raw and lukewarm. I HATE raw onions. There was no mention of raw onions on the menu either. The entire fritatta was also covered with cheddar jack cheese. I really expected the cheese to be melted on top. But like the onions, it had all been shaved and just placed on top cold. Gross. I scraped it all to the side and just proceeded to eat the chicken apple sausage and scrambled egg. Pretty crappy fare for $10.95.
Overall, I guess I should have stuck with the name of the place (Stacks) and ordered pancakes. A few people say the Eggs Benedict is solid, but really, given the complaints about wait, decor, and lousy entrees, I'd just rather go elsewhere for brunch. read more
