I had the opportunity to visit Son & Garden (Palo Alto) and for those that do not want all the fine tuned details, I would rate the overall visit at 8.5 out of 10. You will enjoy! For those who like all the juicy deets, please enjoy the following... Arrived at Son & Garden around 10:30a or so for brunch in mid-July so the weather was great (but the weather is always great in the bay area). The place sits right on the corner and has outside seating under a covering. There are also some overhead heaters installed to keep the temperature comfortable. There are a few parking spaces in front of the restaurant, however when leaving I noticed there was an A-frame sign on the curb that says "Cal-Train Parking", which requires payment so I don't officially know if the parking was free. This brings me to my next point, there is a parking lot right next to the spaces in front of the restaurant, which clearly belongs to Cal-Train, since there is a train station right next to it. Here is where some of the points came off, the noise from the train horn was very loud and if you are not expecting it, it can be startling. The service was prompt and friendly, and they were very attentive. At no point did I ever have to flag anyone down for more water or to ask for anything, kudos to the entire service staff for their level of service. There were a few things ordered here, we had the Chicken Panini with fries, a green salad and a complete meal that included French Toast, Scrambled Eggs and I added the Applewood Smoked Bacon. My wife ordered the "Into the Forest" drink that she said was delicious. All of the food was really good. The Chicken Panini was cooked and made very well, the chicken was moist, tomatoes were thickly cut and the sauce was great. The fries were crispy and seasoned well, and accompanied with a buttermilk ranch dressing that tasted as if it was made from scratch, in house. Honestly, I would purchase a bottle to take home if they had some for sale, it was that good and I'm not a "ranch" dressing kind of guy. The eggs were fluffy and the bacon was pretty good, but my favorite would have to be the French Toast. There was a hint of orange flavor somewhere in the batter and they were absolutely delicious without any syrup. They were made with levain bread, and topped with powdered sugar and fresh fruit. I was very happy with the french toast if I haven't mentioned that yet . In summary, it was a refreshing brunch, with great food and service. My only cons were the train doing its "choo choo" thing a few times during the time there and in my opinion, I feel the prices were slightly more on the expensive side for "breakfast" food but I also know this is the world we live in these days. Not to mention all the florals they have hanging off of the ceiling. Food is always delicious and comes out relatively quickly. Can't forget to mention super picture perfect. The chicken sausage was not salty, which I loved. The pancakes were moist, but I definitely had to ask for extra syrup lol. They do a great job whether you're feeling salty and savory or sweet!! I ordered take out from a very friendly and nice Asian lady, but she had a very thick accent. I only mentioned the accent because I guess she didn't comprehend what I was saying. I wanted to ordered scrambled eggs on my Salmon Benedict, so my 3 year old niece and 1 year old nephew could share and eat the same things as my Aunt (their Grandma) and I were going to eat. My sister suggested this place for lunch. The restaurant looked busy but we managed to find a parking spot right away. We came a bit before 11am and beat the rush. I think it's outdoor dining only. It is a cute place and I loved the purple flowers hanging down from the ceiling. I ordered Tofu omelette with rainbow potatoes and bread ciabatta. Omelette was pretty bland and I just used Tabasco to add some flavor. Loved the butter on the bread, it was lightly sweet. I also ordered Into the Forest Drink with Cute Bear. Delicious and cute. Unfortunately my husband found a piece of long hair in his eggs. We informed the waitress and she offered a new plate right away. I like that you can bring your dogs too. I had been a patron of the Palo Alto location before it closed, so I decided to give this location a try. We took our mom here for Mother's Day, mostly for the adorable decor. Sadly, this location (if you've been to the other ones, you would feel the same) is so much less floral and fun. Also, the menu appeared to be a lot more limited with the fun stuff. Son & Garden shares the building with their sister restaurant, which we accidentally wandered into first. The staff there were not so courteous to us when we had realized our mistake. They probably get that a lot... but if that's the case, isn't that a sign to make it more obvious where Son & Garden diners need to go? The service was subpar as we had to keep asking for basic things a condiments and table settings. The server was not versed in the menu and we ended up ordering something based on their info and it just wasn't what we thought it would be. My poor mom had so much difficulty with her fried cutlet, she didn't really eat. Dishes here are overpriced which I always understood it as part of the premium for dining in a super cute restaurant. Well, the outside seating wasn't great and there was plant debris landing on our table throughout our meal since we were seated outside. In the other Son & Garden locations, there's mostly indoor seating so I didn't think to investigate whether this restuarant was outside only or not. I get that my review of this place is super biased and based on my expectations of their other location, but you would think that they would keep the vibe fairly similar. The dining experiences at both could not be more different. Lastly, the parking situation could not be more nebulous! We didn't know if we were in CalTrain territory or retail. We had a reservation for 8 people and split into two groups to do family style. My group of 4 ordered three items and they were all delicious: Son & Garden Omelet - Everything it came with was so good. I felt like the Parmesan cheese in the omelet really complimented all of the different ingredients. The blueberry scone and potatoes were both cooked nicely too. We saw some families getting brunch together too, and a party of little girls having a girls brunch or birthday party or something. Very sweet to see. Highly recommend sitting on the outdoor patio as well. I would say the food was pretty good/solid. Some of it was better at the aesthetics than flavor. I'm a vegetarian who doesn't eat eggs, so I was pleased to learn that they could make the tofu omelette for me without eggs. Instead, it was more of a tofu stir fry with cubed tofu, sun-dried tomato, spinach, cauliflower, and quinoa. It was solid, and a good option if you're in my situation. Very very heavy on the sun-dried tomatoes, so make sure you like that flavor! I was disappointed that they served it with salad instead of potatoes; maybe the potatoes are not vegan? I didn't ask, and I'm sure they would have brought me potatoes instead if I really wanted them, so this is more my fault. We came here for a corporate lunch and it turned into such an uncomfortable experience. Our reservation was at 1:00, but from the moment we arrived, the hostess kept repeating that the kitchen closed at 1:30. It was said so many times that the whole table immediately felt rushed instead of welcomed. To make matters worse, we were seated on the outdoor patio during a cold, windy day, and the heat lamps didn't seem to work. Not exactly the best setting when hosting business guests. Even though we arrived on time, menus didn't come until around 1:15, which left us with barely any time to order before the hard 1:30 cutoff they kept warning us about. Then right at 1:30, we were told the kitchen and bar were closed, so no additional food or drinks could be ordered. I ordered the stone pot bibimbap and it missed the mark. The rice should have that crispy texture from the hot stone bowl, but instead it was wet, mushy, and didn't feel like a true bibimbap experience. The most disappointing part was being asked to leave around 2:15 while people were still finishing their food and drinks. Overall, it felt more like we were being managed out the door than hosted. This place is like instagram, hollow. I love restaurants with a theme or an aesthetic. The theme of Son & Garden is flowers, and there wasn't much more to it than that. It just doesn't seem fleshed out enough to me. I mean the plates were white! Only the desert plate was cute and girly. It seemed like a weak attempt at making a place have a girlies in the meadow in beautiful dresses theme. Here's the thing: Son & Garden is 6 years old. I would think that if someone who actually embodied their theme- Some whimsical little Alice in wonderland fairy at a tea party aesthetic girlie- If she was in charge of the artistic direction of this restaurant- She would have gathered enough beautiful antique baroque plates, cute chairs, cute sofas, lamps and tea cups and crystal wear from estate sales to make it haunted by 15 Victorian little girls. And that would make the place genuine. This is the cheapest way to hit the coffee foam of an idea of an aesthetic. In terms of the food: It's true that we "eat with our eyes" In fact, an experiment done in 2014 by Professor Charles Spence and his team at Oxford University proved that the visual arrangement of food changes how we perceive its flavor. But I was really blown away, the drip coffee was really good and the ricotta pancakes (make it a meal) with eggs and sausage blew my socks right off. The pancakes were fluffy and lightly sweet, a small drizzle of maple syrup elevated the dish to a whole another level. The food was very good, and surprisingly, one of my favorite dishes was the fish and I'm not usually a fan of fish dishes, so that says a lot. i was honestly super surprised at how good son & garden was at hosting a large party. i went with a party of 14 for sunday brunch and they were incredibly fast. we got orders in quick, food and drinks came out in under 12 minutes for the whole party and no mistakes. i feel it's expected for a large party to take long when it comes to ordering and getting your food after, but they were so amazing! their scones are delicious that came with the omelette and the fried chicken benedict was sooo yummy and large chicken portions. read more

Oh man, this place has gone downhill the inside and outside dining are equally distasteful. I used to love coming here with my gals, but I will not be returning. The server was a nice young lady, but her thick accent made it very hard to understand what she was saying, all in all she was a great server just a bit of a language barrier. The menu is now so limited, no more matcha pancakes! I'm unsure if it's management or how this has changed so quickly. read more

This brunch spot is absolutely gorgeous, bright, airy, and filled with those little aesthetic details that make you want to take a photo before you even sit down. Food is pretty good too! the pancakes were fluffy, the eggs were perfectly cooked, and the drinks were refreshing without being overly sweet. read more

Loved the ambiance, food, and service. It's located right off the Menlo Park Caltrain so it can get briefly noisy but it makes for interesting people watching. The dishes were very pretty and tasted really good. I wish I could order just a plate full of the potatoes- so so good. The Alaskan Benedict was good- flavorful and plentiful. The deep fried French toast stuffed with mascarpone was also super tasty and not too sweet! I'm not normally a fan of sweet brunch items but this was perfectly balanced. I wish they had cold coffee drinks (not just cold brew). The price was a little high but expected for the area. Our total after tip was around $60 for these two dishes plus a drip coffee. read more
