We don't find ourselves in this neck of the woods too often, so glad to have found this spot in Menlo Park. This breakfast joint is pretty big, and glad to see it has character inside unlike the generic floors and cold tables of some places. It's a college town and home to the big techies, so going in we had anticipated some high prices. Purused the menu and decided on the corned beef skillet and a California omelette. And for good measure, did a mac nut coconut pancake on the side. When I asked the waitress how much the single pancake cost, she kind of scoffed at me. (note-the single prices aren't listed in the menu for some reason). Look, I am not yet vested in my 1000 shares of Apple stock (kidding. I actually owe apple some money, but I digress). Food came out pretty quickly. The CB skillet was pretty tasty and never seen it presented this way before. The cali omellete was okay, but filling anyway. The piece de resistance was definitely my $8 single pancake. It was very good, and came with nice flakes of coconut and real chunks of mac nut. Yummy. Prices were pretty high, but we knew that going in. What shocked me was the fact that there were no restrooms in the actual restaurant. You have to go out the back door, down a 50 year old elevator, and punch in some code to use a dirty restroom. Was looking to order just basic waffles with butter and syrup. I asked if they have 100 percent maple syrup they serve with it since one basic waffle is about 12 bucks after taxes. The lady on the phone wasn't very polite but mentioned that if I wanted real syrup it would be another 2.50 charge on top of the 12 bucks otherwise I'd get fake high fructose corn syrup with my order. Kind of cheap of them to not offer real syrup at a restaurant no? I can expect that kind of quality at maybe Burger King but at a sit down restaurant. I just said nevermind and hung up. Went to a nearby cafe for breakfast only to realize it was past 12 and they didn't serve breakfast anymore...good thing this place is across the street and serves breakfast even past 12! It was a Saturday and there was no line at the front, to my surprise. Parking is easy, either on the street or across the street in the underground parking lot! I ordered the Chocolate Divine Waffle and a friend and I shared one of the breakfast samplers that comes with bacon, potatoes, eggs, and a bagel. It's honestly a good enough size to share and way cheaper than getting sides on their own. This is actually why I deducted a star, because of the prices on the individual sides. The prices are really high for sides, like 6.99 for a serving of bacon???? As I said earlier, to get around this, just order a sampler plate that's only 10/11, comes with about 3 items, and is enough to even share between two people. The waffle in itself was pretty divine. It has whipped cream and Ghiradelli shavings on top. There were a huge amount of chocolate chips but this wasn't a problem because each chocolate chip packs flavor! They weren't semi sweet so the sweetness didn't overpower the plate. I still added some syrup because I have a sweet tooth! Now, Stacks was never my favorite place to eat brunch, but I'd come with no complaints. Came here hungry for some brunch food and it hit the spot. We arrived around noon and luckily there was no line and we were able to get seats immediately to order food. Food: - Banana Macadamia Nut and Coconut Pancakes--$10.70 (Short Stack) The short stack came with two pancakes and it was the perfect portion size to share between two people and left us feeling full and satisfied. The pancakes were super fluffy and soft, and I loved the crunchy texture contrast from the bits of macadamia nut and coconut. The banana in the pancakes added a subtle sweetness which was nice and made sure things were not too sweet. The crab melt isn't worth the price, but the other crab dishes are supposed to be quite good. The macadamia banana coconut pancakes aren't as good as Bill's, but certainly tasty. The simple mushroom and cheese omelet is satisfying and filling. Portions are generous and many come with good sides. If you enjoy strong coffee I don't recommend their coffee drinks except for espresso. They have a nice variety of refreshing smoothies that are popular. A good solid hearty American breakfast has been and should continue to be a classic for all walks of life, regardless of background. I say this with a caveat that a healthy diet is a balanced one and a solid American breakfast may temporarily tilt you to an unbalanced shift in sodium, carbohydrates and sugar for the day, maybe for several days. This does not stop me from enjoying an occasional hearty breakfast from Stacks. Most recently, I enjoyed their Mexican Super Omelet(Homemade chorizo, avocado, green chiles, onions, salsa, cheddar-jack cheese, sour cream & chives) which came with a side of potatoes and bagel. Portions are large, and fresh. I didn't find this dish particularly oily. Our waitress was friendly and refilled my coffee cup several times. The wait here on weekends can be long, so be prepared. This Stacks location is facing El Camino Real and is located in the heart of downtown Menlo Park so there are other shops within a short walk, which provides you the perfect opportunity to walk off some of that hearty breakfast/brunch you just enjoyed here. read more

I had the "skillet" with sausage and mushroom. The potatoes were bland, and soggy. There was no crisp to the potatoes and it didn't seem like it was even cooked in a skillet. I was very disappointed with my order and would not recommend it to anyone who is considering ordering it. My girlfriend had the Italian Frittata, which she thought was also just okay. The two dishes were actually the same ingredients but mixed in different ways. However, her potatoes were on the side and actually had brown/crispy parts unlike mine. I often overlook Stacks. I shouldn't. Every time I come here I'm glad I did. They have a lot of capacity so we never have to wait. That's a big deal because every other breakfast option I can think of has a wait by the time my teen wakes up. The food seems to be made with care. I don't expect a coffee shop to be buying pastured eggs & organic chicken, and Stacks doesn't, but they do pay attention to quality in many ways. Their coffee is great, freshly brewed for the table and served in a big thermal carafe, The food was hot & fresh and attractively presented. Their bacon was served in big rashers, perfectly cooked, They offer real maple syrup for an up charge--kudos to them for making this whole food available at all; On top of all that, they have a pretty substantial gluten free menu, including waffles, burgers and huevos rancheros. What's more American than a stack of pancakes for brunch? My friend took me here on a weekday around noon. Parking was easy to find on the street, but I'd imagine it would be fairly difficult on a weekend. Whenever I visit a new breakfast place, I always like to start with their pancakes. I was really happy with the pancake here. I ordered the blueberry one and it was very VERY good. The blueberries were sweet and the pancake was fluffy. In my opinion, it didn't even need any syrup. I just thinly spread the butter to enhace the flavor a bit (the salt in the butter helped) and it was perfect. The pancake was also very big so I was not even able to finish it. I thought about taking it home with me but I knew it would not be as good reheated. Oh well. My friend had the chicken waffles and that was not bad. I did have to add some syrups to the chicken. I'm a firm believer in the fact that chicken waffles needs to have syrups. If not, theni t's just chicken on waffle, not chicken waffle. LOL. My grandson took me out to breakfast, we arrived and sat outside because it was a nice day. We ordered our food, I ordered the skillet plate and usually it's very good. I ordered the ham and mushrooms skillet. It came warm and the mushrooms were raw. I informed the server and she said"we never cook the mushrooms they are always raw". I was surprised because it's a skillet and everything should be cooked and hot. She took it back and had them sautéed the mushrooms but when it came back, it barely had any mushrooms in it and the potatoes were half raw. At that point I was just frustrated and didn't bother sending it back which I should've because it was horrible. I will never go back to that stacks again, I will go to the one in San Carlos. I would avoid this place like the plague. My family and I used to come here every few months for a few years and it was pretty good. I would've given at four stars at the time. We went there yesterday for brunch, and it clearly has deteriorated. My breakfast skillet came out with burnt cheese and literally 100% raw vegetables. Zucchini was crunchy and cold. The mushrooms are clearly just cut and perhaps not even washed. The potatoes were soft, squishy, and cold. Not even cooked. My son's breakfast was not much better. He had what I think was called the farmers breakfast. It must've been a poor farmer. His eggs were runny and watery. His potatoes were raw as well. He thought the pancakes were decent. I make pancakes a lot at home, and I found their pancakes to be overly salty. If you want a decent breakfast for $40, I can recommend other places : camper down the street should have a Michelin star and for 40 bucks you can get two dishes. Spend your money elsewhere. The odds are stacked against you coming to stacks to get a decent meal. Finally, I would like to add that they are heavily promoting giant, colorful mimosas. As soon as you enter the place, you are officially assaulted by giant drinks. I think they've forgotten that they are a restaurant and not a bar. This place stinks. read more

Big portions, good food, fantastic service! I stopped in this morning as I was in the area and craving a Benedict. It was really good - eggs were perfectly cooked, plate was full of hollandaise sauce, and the hash browns on the side were wonderful. I had the most wet salad i've ever eaten in my life yesterday. I ordered a chicken ceaser salad with avocado and when i got the salad, the leaves were very wet, so wet it puddled in my plate.
