This place is amazing! I am from out of town and stopped here as a local recommended it for lunch. My mother got the salad which was HUGE and did not disappoint. SOOO YUMMY!! My husband and I have been here several times and it never disappoints. The service is great and friendly. Anything with the brisket is amazing, the Barnard burger is awesome, and the homemade pimento cheese is fabulous. Also, I've seen some reviews, one in particular, that has stated there are "large dogs in the dining room"- I'm a Mars Hill local and eat here frequently and I have NEVER ONCE seen a dog in the dining room. In response to the "bad service" & "waiting 2 hours for dinner", also I've personally never experienced this. In fact, every time we've ever had dinner there we're out in an hour at most. These are the best burgers in 'Asheville' with lots of options, including vegetarian, plus great salads and fries. Who would've thought to use 2 large Portbella caps as a gluten-free bun option? Atmosphere was very cozy and staff was extremely friendly. While we waited for our take out order we enjoyed a glass of local beer/cider. Since we were visiting the area we asked for recommendations for family friendly activities, they were very helpful and even showed us a couple places on-line. The menu had a lot of interesting options for burgers; it was hard to choose! We ordered the Barnard and Wolf Ridge burgers for us and slidders for the kids. The burgers we're amazing. They we're also able to provide gluten sensitive options for my wife. The only bad thing was we didn't have time to stop by again before we left. My daughter likes this place but I find the food average at best, menu limited, and the owners/cooks bring their large dogs in to work and they hang out in the dining room and have personally witnessed them entering and exiting the kitchen and service areas. Pets are a personal thing and much like children just because you are okay cooking and eating around them does not mean strangers are and paying customers at that!!! I AM a CHEF and I own 2 dogs who often if not always travel with me but I respect others dining and dining areas as if I were the health department so I don't appreciate the owners of this establishment taking the choice to dine and have my food prepared in a pet free environment away from myself and fellow diners. read more

Chicken Review: Always love the short drive over from TN. I tried something different today, the Hot Springs Chicken. It was quite good, but I still like the Dry Ridge better. The HSC was a lighter sandwich, well if I hadn't added the bacon-ha! Chicken sandwiches I would rank 1)DR 2)MB 3)HS I haven't had the CR choice yet. Wings are dang good too. Ordered a full rack of ribs to share with spouse. Smallest rack of ribs I ever saw. Ribs were ok, nothing great. Sauce was ver good though. Mac and cheese was HORRIBLE!!! Very sour tasting as if the cheese and milk were spoiled. Fries had far too much salt on them. After spending $27 plus tip left hungery. Extremely disappointed in the food. As far as the dining area goes it looks like a real dive. Need a facelift desperately. Staff was attentive. Ok. Let me just say this. GET THE FRIED PICKLES. Yes. Even if that means you get nothing else. GET THE FRIED PICKLES. I dream about these fried pickles. I was in town visiting when someone recommended the place and all I can say is, even though the burger was delicious (I could only eat half) before I was stuffed to the gills, I only had one regret: that I could not finish the pickles. I would explode from food overload. Yes. That was my regret. That I left pickles over. So get the pickles. Get them while you can. This place is excellent. Was looking for some food as we were passing through and we're going to check out the burrito place down the street. They were closed and we ended up at stack house. Very happy we did. Me and my girlfriend spilt the platter plate and everything was great. Pulled Pork, Brisket, wings, and sides. We're from out of town but definitely get back by again if we can. We tried this place while staying the night at a local motel. The front desk clerk said they were the best place that was open on a Sunday. My husband had the brisket sandwich basket with onion ring. His baked beans were so good, the brisket was good as well. The IPA he tried was an Austin, Texas label - Mama's Little Yellow Pill. He ordered 2, so he enjoyed it. I had the pulled pork and sweet potato fries. Just okay. I could taste smoke - alot of smoke but could scarcely taste the pork or the vinegar style sauce on it. The sweet potato fries had the skins on, which was good. I just did not enjoy this place other than the service was very efficient. If I ever did return, I'd have to say I'd try something different or just get a burger. From the other reviews that would have been the better decision. read more

Stack House was recommended by my B&B as the place to eat great sandwiches. I was surprised to see the special of ribs and decided to go for it (served only Fri. & Sat. nights). What a fantastic choice, as the meat just fell off the bones (1/2 rack was quite a meal). I tried 2 of the homemade bbq sauces, the standard tomato based & the mustard based. Smelled like Heaven. After driving 7 hours down to NC, The Stack was recommended by hotel staff. Walked in, immediately loved it...right up until the staff ignored me, left me standing there without a greeting. Two other people walked in and were immediately greeted and seated. Still nobody said anything to me. Maybe they thought I was waiting for somebody? Still, should have been asked. So disappointed. Couldn't seem to get seated so I left. Not gonna lie, my husband dragged me here from our cabin in Marshall, NC. I wanted to drive to Asheville. So the short 10 mile drive was beautiful but you're in the mountains so every freaking view is beautiful. The Stack House is located in downtown Mars Hill. We ordered the fried pickles and they were served with American sauce aka ranch. They were beer battered and yummy. I ordered the Exit 11 burger without cheese on white country bun and sweet potato fries. The burger was juicy and favor full. I was scared it was going to be dry and average but it went beyond my expectation. The sweet potato fries were also very delicious. My husband built his own burger with pimento cheese, jalapeños, and mushrooms. The bartender was very attentive and friendly. Great spot! read more

Small restaurant with good food. All 3 in my party liked the food. Temperature of my brisket was slightly warm - not hot - but it was pretty good. Not the best I've ever had by any means. My friend got the ribs special and she reports they were delicious. Another friend got a salad she was satisfied with. Prices are reasonable. Mac and cheese was delicious. So apparently they have a new policy where they won't seat you unless your whole party is there. My husband was about 5 minutes away....several open tables. I'm carrying a baby in a car seat as well. Never ever again will I give this horrible place my money!!!!! The waitress was rude and very inconsiderate. EDIT TO ADD....they squeeze you into the smallest table possible for your party of three. Our child doesn't eat food like this, so they place her high chair right in front of the speaker for the band. And the bench along the wall is awful, part of it is cracked causing you to bruise your leg when sitting down. Save your money and eat in Weaverville!! read more

Tried this for the first time today with my Wife. We started with the spinach dip and that set the pace for the rest of the meal. This was one of the best creamiest warm comforting spinach dips I have had since I lived in NY back in the 1800's. I even ate some on a cucumber slice and the mixture of flavors, tart, creamy, spinachy was very nice. (And I call cucumbers Pukecumbers cause I can't eat them plain). Next came the main meal. My Wife ordered the Stack House Pulled Pork and I ordered a burger with the name The French Broad. They came served on what reminded me of a prospectors panning pan. (That seemed a bit redundant). Which was appropriate for the gold laying there waiting to be devoured. My burger was a 8.795 out of 10 and the Pulled pork was a solid 9.9842 out of 10. The sweet potato freedom fries... no...French Fries did not taste like some funky alien oil refinery coated sludge... they were GREAT. Seriously this place was very good and easily earned the 4 stars that are not easily earned from me. Have since been back a second time. This time I ordered the brisket. Yummy Yummy... the onion rings OMG they are amazing! UPDATE: There was a period of inconsistency here. (As I am now a regular). There were two times that we went in and were shocked... the buns were stale... the spinach dip watery with the signature smoked Gouda not put on. The onion rings were half the normal size... and I mean the normally tempura/beer batter style coating was more of a barely on there. The only thing we figured was that the normal Chef was not there and his back up was incompetent. Since that period everything seems to have gone back to normal. And as an fyi, I have eaten burgers from Maine to Florida, (a lot in NYC) and Vegas, and in the UK, and as a stack style burger these are really high up there on the burger meter exceeding some of the best in the grand ole USA. The food here is absolutely to die for, I mean everything we put in our mouth should be on Diners Drive Ins and Dives and every other food network show BUT be prepared for a 2 hour dinner here.....you will wait ages to even be acknowledged then again for an app and then even longer for entrees. If you have the patience to wait for good food run here now!!! However if you're starving and not in the mood to wait, good or not, I do not recommend this place, you'll be very disappointed. As a previous restaurant GM I can confidentially say the staff is the least organized I've ever seen but the kitchen staff is killin it! read more
