Great service even when under staffed, food took a while but was def worth the wait would definitely reccomend if in the area!

Walking distance from campus and nested in the heart of the tiny town of Mars Hill, NC, the Stack House will give you a memorable burger experience. It doesn't seat a tremendous amount of people so if there are events at the University, I suggest going earlier or later to make sure you get a seat. Casual and relaxed, the decor is comfortable and the staff is friendly. They offer a fairly wide menu, one to fit most any taste but we were there for their famed burgers. I got the Exit 11 Burger all the way with all the trimmings and an order of baked beans. My wife got the same burger but with fries. Be warned, these burgers are thick and mighty. You may need to detach your jaw or at least warm up your jaw before tackling these discs of goodness. The burgers look hand formed and the biggest surprise for me was the bun. It is NOT your typical hamburger bun. The buns have substance to them and can stand up to these burgers and toppings without falling apart. The burger is one of the best I've ever had. I'd even say it is one of the best burgers you can get in the Asheville area. The beans were delicious and the fries looked hand-cut. Pickles tasted homemade. Prices are Asheville-Esque but not unreasonable, but good food is worth the price. These burgers are worth the drive to Mars Hill. read more

Food is excellent especially their fried chicken, fabulous brisket, and pulled pork. And they have great veggie burgers. Hamburgers have all kinds of toppings available. And for a meat oriented place, there's some good salads. read more

Food is ok but unfortunately staff is such a mess ,they took 45 minutes to cook a burger+another 45 minutes for a to go order and one the waitress has the nerve to demand a tip because on her mind think she deserves a good tip , claiming she did a good job ( Wich at that point she did B4 this claiming) we understand definitely might be a problem inside the kitchen ( no my problem) we asked for owner or manager but no luck ,he wasn't there ( I wonder if he or she knows what happens when he's not around !! The best burger in Asheville is in Mars Hill. So juicy, tasty with a good variety of toppings. The place has a small selection of beers and a few appetizers but the stars are the burgers. Service was friendly and the place has a nice casual vibe. My burger was perfectly cooked and I chose the sweet potato fries and they were really good too. read more

I thought I'd give this,mplace a second try - basically because I live in Mars hill sndf we only have like 4 places to eat - including the Waffle House. Well, the place is still dirty, although the waitress was nice enough. I got an app of onion rings. No flavor and burned. Then I got a burger, good enough, with a mound of fries that took up 3/4 of the plate. I guess they do that because fried are cheap, but it was overkill. WOW! Tried to get in on an evening and failed! Returned the next day around 3pm, order two brisket dinners: sides: slaw, fries, sweet potato fries and mac&cheese to go. Waited about 15 minutes. This bbq was fantastic! Texas bbq is hard to contend yet this small town in NC delivered! Meat was moist and had some 'burnt ends' which I love!! Sides were good; mac&cheese was great! This place offered several kinds of bbq sauce: we tried the vinegar based and the sweeter sauce! Both very nice! This restaurant is small on the inside with few tables. It did serve alcohol and had a small sit up bar for enjoying. It is a must try if your visiting Mars Hill, NC. Be prepared for a long wait in the evening hours OR go and order mid afternoon and take home! Either way, it's worth the time!! read more

This is the place to go when you are hungry and want a hearty delicious meal! The brisket is fantastic, I had it over a salad bowl with a selection of veggies and honey mustard dressing. My husband had the pisgah stack, which is a double cheese burger with bacon and chili. This place excels at BBQ (brisket, pulled pork) and has excellent burgers and fried and grilled chicken. This one is tough to rate. Half of our food was amazing. The other half looked tasty but it arrived to the table with the meat cold and the bread soaked through with grease. The food probably rates either a 4 or possibly even a 5 star review. The problems with this establishment are: 1. Abysmal wait service. I mean, horrible. I called ahead to reserve a table for two. Another couple walked in off the street ahead of us. They were seated quickly, got drinks and food within 20 minutes and had paid their check and left before our food even arrived. Meanwhile, my partner and I nursed our original beers and had to practically beg our server to bring us a second. After our wait stretched over an hour, I flagged down our sever and asked to just have our order converted To Go. She breezily explained that I ordered a burger, which is a custom order, while my partner ordered the brisket sandwich, which is assembled upon order. That couple that arrived just before us and was already gone? According to the server, they both ordered brisket sandwiches, enabling a quick in and out. Oh... so it was our fault... for ordering an incompatible pairing. Okay. Ten minutes later, our food finally arrived... on plates. "Oh, I will bring you some to-go boxes", she said, practically sprinting away from us. 2. Inconsistency with meal freshness and temperature. My burger was fresh and tasted delicious. My side was also hot and fresh. My partner's brisket sandwich though, ya know, the sandwich that was supposedly easy to assemble? Oof. It was ice cold and the grease had soaked through the bread completely. The fries were cold. This sandwich had obviously been assembled not too long after we had ordered and sat there, waiting to join for my burger for possibly up to an hour. Typically, I would hold the kitchen accountable for this grievance but the server had already explained that, at this joint, the customer was actually to blame. Our bad. We had the brisket sandwich removed from the order. The original server rolled her eyes and quit dealing with us at this point and passed the baton to her fellow server. Man, this is a tough call. I'm tempted to maybe just do takeout next time but, with a plethora of other great restaurants in the area, why bother? read more

Lots of different craft and regular beers. Huge portions, You can have your protein, On a bun or plate or bowl or on top of a salad. All kinds of wonderful topping to add to your protein wish. All Homemade salad dressing too. I had the Blue Cheese and it was incredible. Pulled Pork was juicy and smoky. Goat cheese add Red cabbage and roasted Garlic on mine..Yum it was really good. We had a great lunch there yesterday, the food and service were wonderful. Everyone should try the deep fried pickles, so amazing, warm and delicious. My husband and I shared a Brisket platter and could even finish it between the two of us, the meat was tender and juicy. The pile of fries seemed to never end. The service was amazing. The owner got us a drink while we waited for a table. He came over and answered questions and explained things on the menu. Two of us got wings on wing night, smoked. Best wings I have ever had! I'm not sure any wings will live up to those smoked wings. Sweet potato fries and regular fries were delicious. Mac and cheese was unique, but very yummy. Thank heaven Mars Hill finally got a good restaurant. And it's barbecue. I am so picky about barbecue and this place has a great cook who knows how to do it. Growing up in the eastern and Piedmont part of the state I'm used to a certain kind of barbecue and I've had to adjust my standards since I moved to the mountains. That said, Stack House really understands barbecue and the meat is flavorful and somewhere in between what I grew up with and what is standard in WNC. I live in Asheville but find myself in Mars Hill occasionally and usually can't find a place that's a) open, or b) any good. Sorry. No dissing intended but just my humble opinion. Now I look forward to getting some barbecue at Stack House when I'm there. They also have excellent french fries -- the kind you finish! give Stack House a try next time you're up at the college. Beware - They don't accommodate allergies at all. Food is great if you can eat it. Sourdough bread is amazing. However, the wait staff was hesitant to ask the kitchen for even a simple request of having a marinated chicken 'rinsed' off before making the salad. Every time we go to the Stack House we find that the burgers are delicious here! I was unimpressed with the brisket -- which really is pot roast -- but I love those options of what can be added to a burger or sandwich. The sweet potato fries are tasty & they have several craft beer options. I had a wonderful Hard Root Beer here that I still haven't forgotten! The service has always been good and we have never had a problem getting a table. I just wish they didn't close so early! *Update* the Mac & Cheese is truly epic, as in the best I've ever had! The partner-in-dine and I went to Stack House for dinner one Thursday evening. They had live music by a local musician that night. I think Stack House has live music on Thursday and Friday nights. Surprisingly, the place wasn't packed when we got there around 8:30pm. I ordered the Mt. Mitchell burger which was a double stuffed burger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, fried egg, pimiento cheese and a side of sweet potato fries. It was a masterpiece of burger-ology! The fries were very crispy. My partner-in-dine got the Appalachian cheese steak which had sliced smoke brisket, horseradish and cheese with a side of fries. He gave his burger two thumbs plus big toes-up! Service was attentive and courteous. Stack House was definitely a bite of burger heaven. read more
