We fell in love with the town of Marshall before Hurricane Helene, and that love hasn't changed--but the town certainly feels different now. The impact of Helene was profound, and it's hard not to feel the weight of that change. Given Marshall's long and rich history, we doubt anyone could have anticipated something so devastating. We believe this moment calls for reflection--gratitude for what we still have, and commitment to preserving the character and history of this special place for future generations. The town is slowly recovering, and we were thankful to be able to visit. Some businesses and buildings are clearly still struggling, while others appear nearly back to normal. While in town, we stopped for a bite at Mad Co. Brew House. Parking was easy and convenient on the street, and the open-air concept was inviting. Because of the heat, we opted to sit inside. Upon entering, the bar is immediately to the right--that's where you grab a menu and place your order. We picked up laminated menus, found a large table, and returned to the bar to order once we'd made our selections. After paying, we were given a vibrating coaster to alert us when our food was ready for pickup at the kitchen window. It's worth noting that tipping was prompted at the point of sale. We don't mind tipping--20% or more is typical for us--but it was frustrating to realize that, in this case, there was virtually no service. We placed our own orders, grabbed our own utensils, water, and napkins, and picked up our food when the pager buzzed. Additionally, multiple signs reminded customers to bus their own tables after dining. No one ever checked on us, and we struggled to find a clean table when we arrived. During our visit, we saw several employees either behind the bar or in the open concept kitchen, but none seemed to be sanitizing or tidying up, despite it not being particularly busy. We recognize that the community has endured a lot since the flooding, and our visit was, in part, a way to support local businesses. Still, basic service standards matter--and without improvement, we worry that some visitors may not return. That said, the food itself was excellent--easily a five-star experience. The setting, the charm of the location, and the overall potential of the place are solid. With a little more attention to cleanliness and service, this could be a true gem. For now, we're giving it three stars, hoping it was just an off night--and wishing the best for everyone continuing to rebuild in this resilient town.
Food was really delicious, the location is great I love the views of the river outside. The bartender was very helpful! We've always gone for a drink there and this was the first time eating. Didn't disappoint!
Went for the grand re-opening after a complete restoration of the building after major damage from 27 feet of flood water from Hurricane Helene. The place was packed to the walls, which was great to see. We had a couple of their craft beers (the Dark, Dark, Dark Stout and the Robust Porter). Both were excellent. The stout had a deep, rich taste without any bitterness. The porter also lived up to its name with a strong but smooth flavor, silky on the palette. The beers went well with our pizzas: the buffalo chicken (very nice sauce & blue cheese crumbles) and the white pizza (great mix of ingredients and the whole roasted garlic pieces really topped it off). The hand-tossed crust here is primo. Well worth a visit if you are in historic downtown Marshall, NC.
Excellent spot in downtown Marshall. We parked across the street and enjoyed a New England IPA and their pilsner as we sat outside and enjoyed the river view. Their wood-fired oven pizza is delicious! We tried the one with carmelized onions and arugula and took home one of the meat pizzas. Friendly service and amazing to see how they've recovered from the hurricane. Would definitely go again.
My wife and I came here for our first wedding anniversary. We were in town for a cousins wedding and decided to try this place for lunch. It was amazing pizza and great beer. We had a good view of the river as we ate. And I must add Great Music!!
Good pizza. Good beer. Doggie friendly. Kid friendly. Would definitely return if we were ever in the area again.
A year living Marshall and this is still our favorite place to go when we don't feel like cooking! Food is always delicious Service is always spot on Ambiance is homey and shows the connectedness of our community!
Absolutely love this place. The staff were amazing and friendly. You cannot beat the creek view. The beer was yummy and I'm not a beer drinker. The food was pretty good, too. The hamburger patties were way larger than the buns which we thought was funny; yet tasty. Kids mac and cheese is Kraft's, maybe? Out little one devoured it. Our buffalo chicken tacos were AWESOME. We will be making several trips here during our visit.

Exploring the eateries around Madison County, we found Mad Co. nice ambience, we didn't get to see the outdoor balcony overlooking the French Broad River. I imagine it's lovely. The bartender was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a nice chat. Worth a stop if your passing through read more
My fiancé and I made a point to come back to Mad Co when we took our most recent trip to Asheville; we'd been here before and absolutely loved it. We got the chicken sandwich and burger, both were delicious. The patio is super cute and right on the water. Really cannot recommend this place enough... perfect for a relaxing afternoon in Marshall! read more
Open open open. The Mad Co. Brew House is OPEN! I was passing through here in October 2025 as I am making my way through all 100 of North Carolina's county courthouses. The Madison County Courthouse is temporarily closed due to the water damage but the structure is still standing. On my way back to where I parked, I spotted this place and stopped in. I bought a beer - not much in the way of support, but I am back on keto and not eating pizza no matter how awesome it smells/looks - and opted to write this review immediately. As I'm typing, another customer asked the beertender about the storm. He pointed to the piece of black tape marking high water line on the wall. It's about NINE FEET off the ground. I included a picture. The leaves up here are just about starting to change. If you're thinking of leaf peeping and heading through the North Carolina mountains, don't miss out on Mad Co. Brew House. Our friends have been coming to Mad Co since they moved to Asheville area. They brought us here on a Monday night in the middle of winter. The place was hopping and the fig and caramelized onion pizza was delicious. Enjoyed the lager and the Coffee stout. Place is worthy of Asheville brew pub scene. Can't wait to come back and have the pizza on the back deck overlooking the river. Very Dog Friendly!!!!!!! read more

After eating across the street at Old Marshall Jail House and enjoying the view of the river, we went to Mad Co Brew House for another beer. So happy to see a Porter on their list of beers after having IPA's all day. It was a solid beer that we got to enjoy on the patio. It was a Friday night, so we didn't get the primo spot by the river, but it was in the shade and a wonderful evening with friends who live up the street. We ordered a couple of pizzas to take home and have to say that these are incredible pizza at an even better price! read more

Great scenery, great beer and great food! What else could you ask for? We were in town for my wife's 40th birthday and had a late lunch after horseback riding. The overlook over the river was amazing while enjoying cold beer and awesome pizza. Can't say enough about this place! Really enjoyed it! read more
Grabbed a quick drink here waiting for reservations next door at the star diner. I'm not much of a drinker so I just got a can of fruit smash, which is a local version of truly. I enjoyed it and their pizza looked pretty good too. read more

Great stop heading back east from Flag Pond, TN! Beer was great and pizza was fantastic! We got the Margarita Pizza and between the 2 of us devoured it! Staff super nice and just an all around chill spot. Heads up that dogs can't be on the patio outside, however they can be in the front patio area. read more

Came across this place while along a nice drive along the French Broad River. We live about 25 miles away looking for lunch after visiting a festival. Everywhere I go I travel with my Service Dog, yes, a REAL ONE. We are always complimented on his behavior. Many people never even notice him. I was immediately called out by a woman behind the bar, "dogs outside!" My wife said he's a Service Dog, where she repeated that we had to sit outside. And YES, he was wearing his vest. I did not push it because of two reasons, first they are clearly uneducated and secondly, they'd probably spit in my food had I pushed it. I really wasn't in the mood. One day they're going to say it to the wrong person and later get visited by an ADA attorney. Sorry, wasn't able to rate the food. read more

Took a road trip up there for the holiday weekend and was glad we stopped in here...ordered a couple of fabulous pizzas and local beers...had 80s radio rock on while we sat on the outside area ... pizzas were fresh & piping hot with really good ingredients...I had the Buffalo chicken with sauce, spinach, onion & blue cheese...if you find yourself in the little town of Marshall, NC, stop in and have a bite & a pint or two! read more
