Open open open. The Mad Co. Brew House is OPEN! I was passing through here in October 2025 as I am making my way through all 100 of North Carolina's county courthouses. The Madison County Courthouse is temporarily closed due to the water damage but the structure is still standing. On my way back to where I parked, I spotted this place and stopped in. I bought a beer - not much in the way of support, but I am back on keto and not eating pizza no matter how awesome it smells/looks - and opted to write this review immediately. As I'm typing, another customer asked the beertender about the storm. He pointed to the piece of black tape marking high water line on the wall. It's about NINE FEET off the ground. I included a picture. The leaves up here are just about starting to change. If you're thinking of leaf peeping and heading through the North Carolina mountains, don't miss out on Mad Co. Brew House. We fell in love with the town of Marshall before Hurricane Helene, and that love hasn't changed--but the town certainly feels different now. The impact of Helene was profound, and it's hard not to feel the weight of that change. Given Marshall's long and rich history, we doubt anyone could have anticipated something so devastating. We believe this moment calls for reflection--gratitude for what we still have, and commitment to preserving the character and history of this special place for future generations. The town is slowly recovering, and we were thankful to be able to visit. Some businesses and buildings are clearly still struggling, while others appear nearly back to normal. While in town, we stopped for a bite at Mad Co. Brew House. Parking was easy and convenient on the street, and the open-air concept was inviting. Because of the heat, we opted to sit inside. Upon entering, the bar is immediately to the right--that's where you grab a menu and place your order. We picked up laminated menus, found a large table, and returned to the bar to order once we'd made our selections. After paying, we were given a vibrating coaster to alert us when our food was ready for pickup at the kitchen window. It's worth noting that tipping was prompted at the point of sale. We don't mind tipping--20% or more is typical for us--but it was frustrating to realize that, in this case, there was virtually no service. We placed our own orders, grabbed our own utensils, water, and napkins, and picked up our food when the pager buzzed. Additionally, multiple signs reminded customers to bus their own tables after dining. No one ever checked on us, and we struggled to find a clean table when we arrived. During our visit, we saw several employees either behind the bar or in the open concept kitchen, but none seemed to be sanitizing or tidying up, despite it not being particularly busy. We recognize that the community has endured a lot since the flooding, and our visit was, in part, a way to support local businesses. Still, basic service standards matter--and without improvement, we worry that some visitors may not return. That said, the food itself was excellent--easily a five-star experience. The setting, the charm of the location, and the overall potential of the place are solid. With a little more attention to cleanliness and service, this could be a true gem. For now, we're giving it three stars, hoping it was just an off night--and wishing the best for everyone continuing to rebuild in this resilient town. read more

Pizza is pretty subjective so... The ingredients were fresh, but unfortunately the pizza didn't have a lot of flavor. The dough was very bland, so that was hard to overcome. You order at the register, pick up your food, and bus your own table. The minimum requested tip is 20%. The place is "open air" so in June, it was pretty warm. We wouldn't go back, but pizza is so personal so give it a try and see what you think. read more

Went for the grand re-opening after a complete restoration of the building after major damage from 27 feet of flood water from Hurricane Helene. The place was packed to the walls, which was great to see. We had a couple of their craft beers (the Dark, Dark, Dark Stout and the Robust Porter). Both were excellent. The stout had a deep, rich taste without any bitterness. The porter also lived up to its name with a strong but smooth flavor, silky on the palette. The beers went well with our pizzas: the buffalo chicken (very nice sauce & blue cheese crumbles) and the white pizza (great mix of ingredients and the whole roasted garlic pieces really topped it off). The hand-tossed crust here is primo. Well worth a visit if you are in historic downtown Marshall, NC. read more

Excellent spot in downtown Marshall. We parked across the street and enjoyed a New England IPA and their pilsner as we sat outside and enjoyed the river view. My first visit to Marshall since the hurricane devastated this charming little town and we stopped into this charming brewery and pizza restaurant and were not disappointed. I had a blackberry (not sour) beer that was perfect for me, loved the blackberry taste. My brother enjoyed the African pale, and he greatly enjoyed this beer. Our pizza was the caramelized onion and fig, which had a delicious combination of toppings. But it's the crust that is truly the best! Crispy but not like cardboard, and not doughy either. Absolutely love this place. The staff were amazing and friendly. You cannot beat the creek view. The beer was yummy and I'm not a beer drinker. The food was pretty good, too. The hamburger patties were way larger than the buns which we thought was funny; yet tasty. Kids mac and cheese is Kraft's, maybe? Out little one devoured it. Our buffalo chicken tacos were AWESOME. I just stopped in for a beer and to relax on the patio for the evening. The front little closed in area was nice, the bar was quaint and crazy warm. I think the kitchen putting out all of that heat for food and such really steams that place right up. It's an order at the bar establishment and then find a seat. Beer selection was decent. Our friends have been coming to Mad Co since they moved to Asheville area. They brought us here on a Monday night in the middle of winter. I cannot say enough good about Mad Co. Brew House! We live in Greenville, SC. One day while driving around we ended up in the picturesque, quaint town of Marshall, NC in Madison County. We were hungry, so we meandered into Mad Co. Brew House where the ambience is extremely positive, the decor is very cool, the food is fabulous and the home-brewed beer is wonderful! They have live music, you can bring your dogs as far as the front closed in porch, and if you want to have a cigarette you can go up the loft deck which is an outdoor area that overlooks the French Broad River and smoke or just enjoy the spectacular view. We've been back several time with Mad Co. our destination. We highly recommend it! read more

After eating across the street at Old Marshall Jail House and enjoying the view of the river, we went to Mad Co Brew House for another beer. So happy to see a Porter on their list of beers after having IPA's all day. It was a solid beer that we got to enjoy on the patio. It was a Friday night, so we didn't get the primo spot by the river, but it was in the shade and a wonderful evening with friends who live up the street. Came across this place while along a nice drive along the French Broad River. We live about 25 miles away looking for lunch after visiting a festival. Everywhere I go I travel with my Service Dog, yes, a REAL ONE. We are always complimented on his behavior. Many people never even notice him. I was immediately called out by a woman behind the bar, "dogs outside!" My wife said he's a Service Dog, where she repeated that we had to sit outside. And YES, he was wearing his vest. I did not push it because of two reasons, first they are clearly uneducated and secondly, they'd probably spit in my food had I pushed it. I really wasn't in the mood. Yes, those are train tracks too. So let's talk about Jamie for a second- every successful taproom should have a Jamie. Well spoken, polite, professional, knowledgeable about product, patient, kind and funny. A five star kind of guy. The beer - I tried three, all Pale Ales - Africa Pale, Rye Pale and Tropical Pale. The Africa and Rye were really bright, crisp flavorful beers - total thirst quenchers with subtle hop profile complexities. The Tropical gets honorable mention. If you like Farmhouse Ales there were a few to choose from plus beers from Laconia their sister brewery. Really had a nice relaxing visit with some great beer. Thanks Jamie!
