As a former employee I might be biased, but Satch² is probably the best deep dish pizza place in Gainesville. At least it is the #1 spot for authentic Detroit style pizza, no contest!! As someone with a gluten allergy, the staff goes above and beyond to provide delicious and safe gluten free pizza. They also have a killer range of vegan options, with a custom vegan cheese blend that actually melts!! They take cross contamination very seriously, and have seperate pans/tools for regular, gluten free, vegan, AND gluten free + vegan pizzas. The employes are delightful and lovely (but again I may be biased as I worked with many of them for the better part of a year and still consider them dear friends) As long as you are kind and polite, they will go above and beyond to make your experience one to remember!! It is worth mentioning that they make their dough fresh daily, and can only prep/stock so many gluten free doughs before running out til the next day. Vegan doughs do not have this handicap. Pro-tip!! If you call ahead to schedule an order for later in the day, they are happy to reserve a dough for you. The owner is a Gainesville local and very funny, his instagram skills are unmatched. They also have a killer knick-knack/curio cabinet esq toy store, stocked with fun gag gifts, to plants, to hand-made products from local Gainesville artesians. Honestly I wasn't in love with it the first time I went. But now that I've been twice, I feel like I have a better opinion. It's good! If like me, you like NYC style pizza you might be disappointed at first because this is thick, pan, Detroit style squares. They're very thick and very hearty, which is good because it's also kind of expensive. One 4-slice pizza is definitely a meal for two people, and I think the price reflects it. Thankfully, the quality matches as well. The crust is crispy and buttery with the signature Satchels crisp edges. I'm also very thankful that they have a soda fountain for Satchel's fantastic homemade sodas. It's located in a very cute and quaint food park, which means mostly outdoor seating only sharing space with other establishments. The first time I went at the tail end of the hot swamp season, it definitely hampered my experience because of all the bugs and the humidity. But the second time I went in the cool fall, it was quite nice sitting outside with my hot pizza on a chilled day. Something to think about if you plan on visiting and dining "in". I'd probably recommend taking it home, but then you can't get soda refills. Anyway, overall pretty enjoyable. I welcome any quick(er) service high quality pizza in Gainesville. read more

I've been to the original Satchels a few times and this new restaurant has the same great taste in a new setting. It's great being able to pay with credit card and only spend a moment ordering at the counter before getting to enjoy the beautiful outdoor pavilion. The picnic tables are nice and far apart which is great for these times when dining out can be frightening. The pizza was a bit too oily for my taste, but otherwise it was delicious. Satch Squared is the offshoot of Satchel's located in 4th Ave Food Park that serves Detroit style pizza. If you're unfamiliar, Detroit style pizza is not quite as deep dish as Chicago style, and has a crispy crust. The main draw for this place is their breakfast pizza: eggs, cheese, protein, and either red sauce or maple syrup on top. We chose the tempeh as my partner is pescatarian and we both love tempeh. I wish there was a little more on the pizza or it was in larger pieces, because it felt a little sparse. We also got the red sauce and I kind of regret choosing that over the syrup because it overpowered everything else and just tasted like normal pizza. I'd love to come back and try the syrup topping and see what that's about. Overall I thought the pizza was good, just would have made different choices. Satch Squared is a cool newer place in town that serves something that's not very common, so I recommend giving it a shot. read more

I got the personal pepperoni and had it topped with the hot honey and that took it to the HNL (hole nutha level). They had a lot of outdoor space here that they shared with a couple other restaurants. They only thing for me that stopped it from going to a full blown 5 was the outdoor space wasn't clean and thier were a ton of flys. Oof. I'm not one to complain, but this one inspired me to get on Yelp. I love the 4th Ave community. I've wanted to try Square pizza. However, the employee I met -- big problem. I ordered at the window. She basically asked - What do you want. I ordered. Gave a modest tip, but tipped nonetheless. She ROLLED HER EYES at me over a tip amount that she didn't do any work for, then closed the window on me. The pizza was good. Pizza was hot enough it needed 10 minutes to cool down. I'm from Chicago, and I like a good tasting, hot pizza, I have no complaints there. But the attitude and interaction with an entitled employee, who didn't make the pizza herself (or anything), to be such a turn-off, and with a customer who's a regular patron to 4th Ave Street, this was surprisingly distasteful. read more

Satch Squared met my high expectations for it based on my long love for Satchel's. Had dinner our first night in town. I had the Pizza with Garlic. The edges had the classic burnt cheese that Detroit-style pizza is known and loved for. But the sauce made the pizza for me. It was such a robust and delicious red sauce and the additional garlic upped the flavor profile exponentially. My partner had the vegan cheese with vegan pepperoni. His was amazing! He said it was the best vegan pizza he's ever had. And I'd have to agree. I think I actually even preferred it to the non-vegan. Something about the vegan cheese kept the dough on the crust more gooey than the dairy cheese. And I was there for it! We had to go back on our way out of town to try the breakfast pizza, which we got with vegan cheese and vegan sausage with the syrup cup for dipping. OMG! It was dynamite. Was dying to try some Detroit style pizza. Saw this place in Gainesville and had to take a wack at it. I really liked this place. You order at the window and they make it fresh and call you to pick it up over the loudspeaker. Plenty of toppings to chose from. Pizza was crunchy on the edges and nice and airy in the middle. Back in town for awhile and excited to learn of the new location. We are huge satchel's fans! My husband is gluten-free so we got 2 gluten-free pizzas. They were AMAZING. The crust was way better than any other we've had in awhile. The edges were perfectly crisp and the center was soft. The sauce had a great flavor and a little kick. The homemade root beer made the meal perfect. We called in for takeout and ate at one of the socially distanced outdoor picnic tables. My 3 year old enjoyed the climbing structures. We will probably be back weekly for pizza as long as we're here and will be returning really soon for waffles! read more

Located in an area of Gainesville that is starting to really develop their food scene, this place is an excellent addition to the neighborhood! In the time of COVID, the shared outdoor dining space that they have makes for a good opportunity for people to eat and socialize while maintaining some space. But now let's talk about the food because that's the important part right? Let me tell you, they do not skimp on portion sizes here. You may think "oh, personal pizza, must be small." Not at all. This is one hefty pie and it is a delicious one at that! I love how because it is Detroit Style, it is a rectangular pizza with nice thick crispy edges that make for a fantastic textural contrast with the cheesy middle. The ingredients that they use are fresh and delicious and unique. I got basil, sausage, and hot honey on my pizza. Fantastic! I tried square pizza with sausage and pepperoni. Very delicious. I think it was detroit style. Generous portion of sausage and pepperoni. Pepperoni was high quality and delicious. But above all, the crust was very tasty; specially on the edges it was crunchy! The tomato sause was also good. The only downside was the pizza was alittle greesy and pepperoni on salty side. So if you are on low cal diet, i dont recommend it. I think one pizza serves two people easily. I stopped for lunch the other day and had a great experience. I like the food park setting a lot. There is a lot of shade and it was pleasant while waiting for my pizza. The pizza took about 20 minutes and was delicious. I didn't even make it home before eating 3 of the 4 pieces.
