My boyfriend and I were in FLL and after an hour of research on the road, we settled on Square Grouper. He's from California but travels a lot for work and Ive been working in the tourism industry for almost 15 years with the last 5 years in the DMC business in Hawai'i and the 4 years before that in the South Pacific. I say all this to show that we both have had some food travels and sensitive palettes.
When we got to Square Grouper on the evening of Saturday, January 16, 2021, I honestly was a little pessimistic. We got there around 7:00 p.m. and there was a 45 min. to 1hour wait. There were also a lot of kids, which sometimes with this range of dining, you're not sure how it will go service wise.
I was really blown away with this restaurant. We ordered three appetizers when our drink orders were taken at the beginning: the Chicken Wing Lollipops, Flash Fried Conch, and the Warm Edamame. We got all three items within 10 minutes of ordering and mind you this is at busiest time of the service. For the entrees my boyfriend got the Seafood Stew and because I was really craving fish, my entrees were two Salad Proteins: the Scallops and the Local Fish of the Day. I also made a couple of special requests for condiments that were not technically listed on the menu but I knew they had it. They gave me a side of Mayo, Kikkoman Sauce (thank god because if it was anything else I would have not enjoyed my meal honestly) and Siracha. They ran out of Yellowtail for the local fish of the day so our server recommended the Hogfish, which I had grilled while the Scallops I had seared. They were both so delicious. Cooked perfectly, not complaints. The salad was so fresh...and had these yummy wasabi rice crackers with a nice burst of spicy heat. I also tried some of the Seafood Stew and it was so rich and the depth of flavor was just...WOW. The variety of seafood in it was great and honestky I could have the sauce on rice (which we did with some of the jasmine rice they offer). For dessert, we got the mini tiramisu and key lime pie which were the best way to end the meal. Our server made a really great espresso too. They actually serve it with rock candy as a stirrer for your sugar, which was a really nice touch honestly.
Service was amazing. They had bussers on the floor, clearing plates CONSISTENTLY. A finished plate wouldn't be in more than 5 minutes. We got our food piping out too. Last but not least our server, Kelsi, was amazing. She was so sweet and even though they were so busy, she was attentive and engaging and I felt really taken care of. Such a mark of great service, so thank you again
Drink service was great too. There were a couple drinks they allowed me to substitute a different liquor. I got the Lychee drink they have but asked for the Ketel One Botanical Cucumber vodka. They also had a nice drink of the day with rosemary and gin...believe it was some type of Mule...
I enjoyed myself so much that I opted to buy a round for the kitchen, which is in the menu for $20.00. Which I love because I know how it is after a long night like they had (4 turns on some tables!! GEEZ!!) I also bought a round for the front of house teams because those servers and bussers did a stellar job too. If you have a great time, consider doing this too!! Wish more restaurants did this.
I normally take food pictures galore, but it was such a good time and we just wanted to enjoy the delicious meal and great service.
Lastly, they are a very family friendly place. Would feel very comfortable bringing my nieces and nephews through and not feeling out of place. It's such a laid back, chill vibe.
We'll definitely be back again and I'll be sure to recommend Square Grouper to others :)
