Square Donuts are the BEST donuts in the world! The Long John is my favorite: a yeast donut with yummy chocolate icing and cream inside. It is the best thing -- despite it's sexually explicit name. it's the best donut I've ever had. Cake donuts with white icing or clear sweet icing are that crisp outside-chewy inside delight that anyone who loves donuts will appreciate. After my wife had been bragging about this place from her childhood & hometown for years, we happened to be in town & stopped in. We arrived at around 11:30a on Mother's day, and as it happens, they had almost run out and had only 11 donuts left. They were closing up, we took 5. After eating one right away in the car, I can see why she has loved this place forever. Their donuts are softer & more tender than that KK donut place and had a better flavor, without all the sugar to cover it up. If you've never been here, it is a "must stop" when you get the chance. I must first preface this by saying that I have never set foot inside Square Donuts or paid for anything from here, and both of those things likely alter my review. I do, however, eat a Square Donut every Friday, when they are provided free at work. And these donuts have never let me down. My favorite are the jelly-filled donuts and the ones filled with chopped apples. It seriously tastes like an apple pie donut. The traditional glazed donut is good, as is whatever they call a crueller (tractor tire? OK, Indiana). I know they sell out quickly and people have been bringing them to morning events for years. I love that these donuts are a normal size, and they were really delicious. Too sweet for my taste, but that's just about right for most peoples' tastes. I was asked what I wanted right away, and panicked and just ordered a couple obvious things. I'd urge you to take your time because they have some really interesting donuts. If you're used to creme filling on the east or west coast, you'll be expecting a custard filling when you order one of those donuts. Honestly the best donuts i've ever had. They're always fresh and very soft, and they just taste so good. i've had several local style donuts in other places around the state, but honestly none of them compare. i can no longer stand places like Dunkin' donuts, Jack's Donuts, etc. because they seem so fake in comparison! They may be cash only, but that's honestly such a phony reason to not like the establishment because it has nothing to do with the quality of the product. guess that's just more donuts for me! i do, however, advise that you get there early because they do tend to run out of donuts by the time it starts to get closer to when they close. The peanut butter and jelly donut is my fav.It is a fresh donut with a peanut butter glaze on top and jelly inside.I love that the donut it self is not very sweet,you get the sweetness from the frosting/glaze on top it all balances out .I always find other donuts overwhelming because the donut ,frosting and filling are all sweet. Just visited Square Donuts and wanted to stress the point that the shop closes when they sell out of donuts even if it is earlier than 3pm. The square donuts are gone long before then. I know everyone raves about this place, but the variable business hours and supply is something of a concern. So buyer-be-ware if you are traveling long distances to try one of the raved about square donuts. Get there as close to opening time as you can because the square donuts go fast. Once the square donuts are gone they have cake donuts. Once all of the donuts are sold the shop is closed so don't depend on them being open till 3pm as advertised. These donuts are pretty good and definitely not too hard like some other places. I don't know that I'm as in love with them as some other people seem to be, but I do enjoy them quite a bit overall. As for the actual location, I've only been there a couple times, and the main thing I've taken away is that they run out of some items pretty quickly. UNIQUE PRODUCT, AVERAGE SERVICE Square Donuts are a unique concept... even if they aren't really square. They are fresh and can certainly hit the spot. That's why I wanted to send boxes of them to some offices at Indiana State University. What's strange is Square Donuts delivers to the downtown Terre Haute hotels upon request, but they wouldn't deliver a few blocks north to the ISU President's Office and the nearby ISU Career Center. Few things offer a morning pick-me-up like the surprise of free doughnuts at work... and few things say Terre Haute better than Square Donuts. So, we thought they would be the perfect thank you gift to these hard-working office staffs. Hopefully, Square Donuts will change their policy and we can add a star or two to their review. In the meantime, we'll go to Baesler's Grocery and have them make up some nice trays for such occasions and deliver them ourselves.
