Super cute town and super cute coffee shop!…read more I drove 3 hours one way to try this coffee shop out thanks to the Discover Downstate IL app (coffee tour). The coffee shop layout was nice and inside had some cool decor. I love espresso so I ordered the Iced Vietnamese- A delicious blend of Espresso, Sweetened Condensed Milk, and Iced Coffee. I do think it could have used more sweetened condensed milk (personal preference). The staff was great and very friendly. They made up my drink quickly. I do recommend you pop in at least once to order something from here.

I am jaded by my big cities lifestyle, but absolutely celebrate small town charm when I see it. Doing a drive over from Terre Haute to Lincoln Trail Lake, we find ourself in the bustling urban center of Marshall afterwards (kidding about the bustling). Always seeking coffee spots as a place to have a cup, but also to sit and visit, I discover Gypsy Queen Coffee Bar on-line. Reading about the local lore of the history of the Gypsy Queen right after entering the front door, I am taking a breath for this place says "chill, sit, settle in, visit." Table seating, comfy living room like chairs, some outdoor bistro seating out front and lots of space, this place is most welcoming. The worn looking brick inside adds to the overall decorative warmth. Merchandise like mugs, t-shirts and hats, a gelato cooler ready to be scooped out to order, some pre-made/baked items in their cold case from quiche, to empanada like biscuits to a "big salted pretzel," and not to even mention coffee, coffee drinks, tea, bubble tea...this place is excellent in options. We felt welcomed, relaxed, invited. Had an exceptional cup of coffee and a nice visit with my folks while sitting in the big comfy chairs. As my parents enjoy the short drives outside of Terre Haute we often take, I can absolutely see us coming back over here sometime and making sure to stop in to Gypsy Queen Coffee again.

They had almond milk for my latte. I ordered a large and maybe should have added an extra shot of espresso as the latte was pretty weak (but I didn't know this until we were in the car driving away). Great selection of Bigelow flavored teas but for hubby there was no black tea (he does not like herbal or flavored tea due to allergies) so he was disappointed. We ordered breakfast sandwiches to go. The wrap and burrito were premade needing only to be heated in the mini oven. The oven can only heat one item at a time, so if you are in a hurry, keep that in mind. The second person working was heating our food, brought me the wrap, then proceeded to wait on the next people in line. I asked about the burrito but she ignored me. After taking their order and giving them their beverages she then decided to heat up the burrito for us. Huh? What sense does that make? We would go out for breakfast and skip this place next time.

There is a line of customers parked outside when they open at 6am. Most of their donuts are preferred for businesses. When they run out of donuts they close without warning, so I would come as early to open as you can if driving from far away. My favorite donuts are the glazed and the long johns. There have been many times where we went at 9 am an they were already closed. With a successful business they should make enough donuts or make more donuts if they run out to last until remotely close to what they lost as their closing time. The donuts are the best but are a bit pricey at $15 a dozen. The store is warm and small so it feels cozy and comfortable.

I have really debated how many stars they should get. On…read moreone hand, the food was really good! My daughter and I both got the Chicken Gyro (that's not its full name, but that's what I remember). That was our plan B bc they were out of corned beef. It was awesome and so huge that we had to use a fork and knife to eat it. The Parmesan fries with curry was also very good. We got there during an off time. There were 6 ppl dining when we came in. It took probably 10-15 minutes before we got to order. We were there for 30 minutes before we got our drinks. I had to go out to the car to get the drinks we had in there bc we got thirsty. I also don't think they change table cloths between customers. Once the other people left, tables were cleared but crumbs remained. When I came back from the car, there was an insect crawling on our table. I won't say the R word, but I'm pretty sure it was a baby R. I pointed it out & worker squished it in her fingers and tried to save face by saying it was a spider (definitely wasn't a spider) or an aphid (most definitely not an aphid). I hate giving bad reviews, especially to small businesses, and they probably don't deserve the 3 stars, but the food was delicious when we finally got it ... just tried not thinking about the critter. Not having a restroom wasn't great either. We do prefer to wash our hands before we eat, as one should. We went out to our car to use our hand sanitizer. After other customers left, I also started to play my own music at the table. They obviously had kids in the back and had a children's show fairly loud, which was just kind of annoying. That may be nitpicking, but dining in was just not a good experience all around... besides the food. Sorry

The restaurant smells of bread and soup as soon as you walk in. This is one of those places that you know is actually handmade as soon as it gets put down in front of you. We all ordered half soup/half sandwich meal. But the portions were huge, honestly. We could have shared. I got the lemon pepper chicken sandwich with chicken rice soup, both were actually incredible. My companions got the Reuben and pasta salad, and the sweet potato soup with turkey Reuben. Everything was great. The sweet potato soup is just that, very sweet, molasses flavor - might not be for everyone. The woman that took our order was very kind She shared some knowledge of their breads with us and even gave us a free load of sourdough to take home. They have many different types of breads, rolls, pastries etc available at the counter for pickup, anytime. Many, if not most, of the menu is turkey. We had one person that didn't eat turkey and specifically ordered the Reuben without turkey. The kitchen ran out of pastrami and put turkey on his sandwich. When she told him about the change, and he mentioned not liking turkey, she said well it's actually chicken anyhow. This was really confusing. He took it off and enjoyed the sandwich, but they should be cautious of changing ingredients without asking because of allergies and preferences. The restaurant is very small, with a few tables for dine in. There is no restroom.
