Super cute town and super cute coffee shop!…read more I drove 3 hours one way to try this coffee shop out thanks to the Discover Downstate IL app (coffee tour). The coffee shop layout was nice and inside had some cool decor. I love espresso so I ordered the Iced Vietnamese- A delicious blend of Espresso, Sweetened Condensed Milk, and Iced Coffee. I do think it could have used more sweetened condensed milk (personal preference). The staff was great and very friendly. They made up my drink quickly. I do recommend you pop in at least once to order something from here.

I am jaded by my big cities lifestyle, but absolutely celebrate small town charm when I see it. Doing a drive over from Terre Haute to Lincoln Trail Lake, we find ourself in the bustling urban center of Marshall afterwards (kidding about the bustling). Always seeking coffee spots as a place to have a cup, but also to sit and visit, I discover Gypsy Queen Coffee Bar on-line. Reading about the local lore of the history of the Gypsy Queen right after entering the front door, I am taking a breath for this place says "chill, sit, settle in, visit." Table seating, comfy living room like chairs, some outdoor bistro seating out front and lots of space, this place is most welcoming. The worn looking brick inside adds to the overall decorative warmth. Merchandise like mugs, t-shirts and hats, a gelato cooler ready to be scooped out to order, some pre-made/baked items in their cold case from quiche, to empanada like biscuits to a "big salted pretzel," and not to even mention coffee, coffee drinks, tea, bubble tea...this place is excellent in options. We felt welcomed, relaxed, invited. Had an exceptional cup of coffee and a nice visit with my folks while sitting in the big comfy chairs. As my parents enjoy the short drives outside of Terre Haute we often take, I can absolutely see us coming back over here sometime and making sure to stop in to Gypsy Queen Coffee again.

I'm stunned this place can stay in business. Service is terribly slow. I stopped in just to pick…read moreup a few muffins and I waited in line for more than 15 minutes and I was 5th or 5th or 6th in line. Even so I fared better than the drive thru line. They did not serve one customer in the drive thru while I was there and there were at least 4 cars in line. The worst part was that there were really only 2 people working and one of them wasn't getting much done because she spent more time in the back talking to the manager/owner?, the young person waiting on the counter was going as fast as possible but could keep up with the crowd. It really is a shame because the muffins and coffee drinks are very good but it is impossible for working people to wait that long for a cup of coffee in the morning. I've been stopping here off and on for several years and this poor service is something new. I'm just hope it gets better or this business may not be around long. I imagine if there were any other options in the area, this place would be in trouble.

Don't let my 2 discourage you from stopping by, I mean that! Life is about managing expectations. For purposes of looking at this old church, the beautiful stained glass and the organ, absolutely pop in to take in the beauty of this old building. Just know what this place is and know what it is not. I stopped by during "library hours" from 10AM-4PM with to check this place out, read my book and grab coffee. During this time, the coffee is self serve, in urns, probably sitting there for some time, not hot and pretty bad. Powdered creamer is available. I made a donation of $2, got my bad coffee and sat in the open, quiet space of the Meeting Grounds for about an hour reading my book. So despite being dissatisfied with the coffee, my mission was accomplished. When I was there, there were three older men who were having a Bible study discussion and there were two guys who must live in the area who stopped in to grab coffee and then promptly left. I felt comfortable being there, taking some photos, minding my business, doing my thing, despite the kind of odd surroundings. The room is big and this would be a perfect little spot for a group to meet or book club to gather. They have snacks and other simple coffee drinks, but those are available for sale during the non-library hours I believe. The Meeting Grounds itself is open to the public from 8AM-8PM, according to the sign at the door. The church itself seems part hippie revival/part lazily renovated/part historically cool. It is an interesting old space.
