This landmark has been in business for over 40 years, serving donuts, donut cakes and coffee. I was very pleased to find a donut shop that's loved by the locals. The blueberry donut cakes and chocolate eclair are local favorites. I took a big bit of the blueberry cake tasted like a blueberry muffin in donut form. It's a brilliant idea because it was just the right amount of sweetness and didn't feel and tasted greasy like most donuts. The racks were full and donuts were neatly arranged. The Royal Donut is a classic, a staple of my childhood on the way to school, on the way home from church, a saturday morning, a weekday in the summer. I used to run across the street as a kid from my dads workshop when they still had a location on north & hazel. I'd order a half dozen donut holes & a chocolate milk and sit at one of the little canopy tables. The windows were all glass and my dad could see me sitting in there the whole time, we were such regulars the workers and regulars knew me too. The shop was a welcome relief in the summer, baking in the summer heat i'd walk in the shop with its little bell and suddenly my sun drenched skin was covered in a cool blanket while I enjoyed my little treat. After that location closed we frequented the fairchild & vermillion location via the drive through. Always friendly, always fresh donuts. I've passed by this place plenty of times durin my visit to Illinois but never had the chance to stop in, but today I did. The place could use a little facelift for the dine in crowd, give it a warmer inviting feel, especially since doughnuts are a comfort food but the racks were full and in a nice clean order. Let's get to the doughnuts. This place had a decent selection to choose from, starting with your standard glazed to a bacon maple bar doughnut, wich we ordered. They are reasonable in price, we paid about $13. For a fancy dozen. The cinnamon rolls were large and even had them with or without nuts. This place didn't offer the free bakers dozen, sad for us on our end since the doughnuts were delicious and fresh. I'll make sure to stop in again on my next visit to Illinois. read more

This shop appeared to us like a vision in the darkness - we were driving into Danville early in the morning, and the shop's neon sign was a beacon of hope for our weary eyes. After stopping to take pictures of the beautiful sign, we bowed to come back after my early doctor appointment was over. We were not disappointed. The shop offers both cake and yeast style donuts. My family opted for two cake donuts. Mine was cherry flavored, but wasn't awfully synthetic tasting like cherry candies often are. It was the perfect festive treat for Christmas week. The classic cake donut is also a good bet. You won't find any fussy espresso drinks at this stand alone shop, bug their coffee was decent. This IS your grandparents kind of donut shop. I noticed the retro Royal Donut sign on my way toward a certain well ranked coffee shop I discovered via Yelp. The coffee shop was closed (on a Sunday morning!!!) so Royal Donut became my select! I took the busy parking lot as a good sign. As I came in some grandparent figures were exiting. My suspicions, originated when I first drove by, that this is a no frills old school joint, were confirmed! Royal Donut likely has not changed in decades and that is a good thing! Set your expectations accordingly. This is a place for classic presentations, not your maple bacons and such newfangled concoctions. I ordered the blueberry cake donut, a yeast donut with chocolate icing and sprinkles, and a vanilla with sprinkles. All were fresh and tasty. I appreciated that the case was well stocked at 11:00 in the morning, rather than being out of popular favors. The cooler was full of classic bottled sodas. If you do carbonation and/or caffeine with your sugar and fat, a plethora of choices await! On this breakfast visit I got Prairie Farms milk packaged in a paper carton. Haven't had this type of package in years. There was a funk that rendered the milk undrinkable (was within sell by date). Other reviews remark $1.05/donut is too high, but this is what DD and KK charge. Why not keep the money local? To wrap up, service is nominal, parking potentially tricky, but the end product is a treat. Worth getting off the interstate for if you have a hankering for a classic donut! read more

Restaurant review I was super excited after hearing about this hand made donut place in Danville where I have to come out for work twice a month. I was expecting good prices and great donuts. What I ended up finding out is that this is quite expensive and the donuts are okay. For all those people that "hate" dunkin donut, I can see the draw of going to these old school hand made donut places and saying that they are amazing, but coming from Chicago where they have fire cake donuts or the donut vault where they use high price ingredients to command a high price for the donuts like a Triple Valrhona Chocolate Cake; I was disappointed. I jumped on the 6 donuts for 5 dollar deal but I soon found out this only included all the basic yeast donuts and none of the ones with topping nor the jelly filled donut. This was the first major disappointment. Next the donuts themselves are very small and possibly even smaller than dunkin donuts. As you can see from my pictures this is my experience with each donut that I tried sprinkles donut- very crunchy, colorful. My son really liked this but there is so many sprinkles that it gives it an odd texture Chocolate frosting/chocolate donut- good, but dunkin donut chocolate glazed donut I think is better Blueberry donut- I could barely tell that it was blueberry flavored The cinnamon and cheryr cake were eaten by my wife so I have no idea what they tasted like. This place is amazing. The lady at the window was very friendly and asked if I had been in the store before. When I told her I had not, she said that everything was made fresh each day and that I'd be back. I had a lemon cream, bavarian cream, and a donut that had bacon bits on top of the frosting. The prices were on the expensive side for donuts which made me a bit skeptical, but after tasting them I'm a believer. The quality was well worth the price and the ladies behind the counter are very friendly. She's right. I'll be back for sure. I'm still giving this place 5 stars with one complaint. The parking lot is on a hill. I felt like I was parking my truck on the side of a mountain because it was slanted downwards toward the street. I know that it can't be expected of them to flatten the parking lot, but it would have been nice to park in a lot that didn't make me think that I'd need climbing gear to make my way to the front door of the building. All that being said, this place has the best donuts this side of Krispy Kreme and I'll be going back for sure. Bonus is that it's on my way to work! read more

Fabulous little donut shop(s-there are 2) in Danville, IL. One is open 24 hours and the other does more cakes and specialty pastries. I have been to both locations...both were clean and really cute, and are good-sized enough to accommodate a crowd. They feature not only cake AND yeast doughnuts, but cookies, pastries, cakes, and a small sandwich menu. The counter service was friendly, as were some of the other customers, who allowed me to photograph their tray of treats. This is the kind of doughnut shop I remember from when I was a kid. Everything was so fresh, and you stand there agonizing about your tough choice until you FINALLY decide and the counter lady brings out your treats from behind the glass. The selection was pretty impressive, they had everything I could've wanted and a few things that you don't usually encounter. Stopped by around 2pm on my way back based on recommendations. Ordered a mixed dozen (6 cake and 6 yeast) as only the drive through was open so unable to see all the choices. Unlike a lot of places, long johns were not part of the dozen you could get. Long johns has always been my go to. Good Service was friendly Donuts were in a nice sturdy box that was easy to open and close Yeast donuts were good size Both donuts had a good consistency (not too dense or too airy) Bad Cake donuts were small, why not same size as yeast donuts Cost was on the higher end, $12 for a dozen Biggest issue was the donuts had a green taste like the oil they fried in was not fresh. read more

A Danville establishment since the 70's. I lived here until I was 8 years old and it was a family tradition to come here on the weekends. Their donuts are out of this world, but our family always got the iced sugar cookies. When I was a child, I would get one on special occasions or when I had to get a shot at the doctor! They decorate them with a chocolate smiley face, but on certain holidays they would have unique ones. I specifically remember a bunny face around Easter and a pumpkin face for Halloween. You have to try them! Just last night we were visiting family in Covington, IN and we had to make a stop. We bought a dozen and took them back with us to Lafayette. They won't last long!
