Okay, I loved this place from the first time I went there. The food is good, the ice cream is…read moregreat, and it's beautifully situated on the edge of Miligan Park. So, after a full year of hearing everyone rave about Dari-Licious -- and never seeming to find anyone who even knew of Big Dipper -- I did the only thing that a responsible Yelper would do: I rounded up a few pals (including Ross M. and Jacob P.) and embarked on a taste test. We did it totally scientifically. We came up with a list of fairly standard food items that could be found at both (burger, Coney, fries, milkshake). We sent a search party out to each place at the same time, so that the food would be equally hot. We met in a neutral location. And we sampled away! The result: We were unanimous that each item was better at Big Dipper than at Dari-Licious. Dari-Licious was apparently surviving on reputation and low standards, and maybe by the fact that it's on a busier road. But we all agreed that the winning item in each category was the one from Big Dipper. Take a minute to reflect on this. It's not like one of us thought one thing and another thought something else. It's not like DL won in even a single category. And it's not like it was even close. So if you want a burger, fries, a Coney or a milkshake, take a dip in the Big Dipper. Otherwise, you might as well just keep driving to Lindy Freeze. q. e. d.

Matcha En - Black Sesame Matcha Latte ($7.50) - even 0% is already really sweet. I think the black sesame powder comes presweetened.

Upon arrival, I checked out the menu and saw a lot of wonderful variety of items that I wanted to try; however, I only had room for one thing. While scoping out the menu, my eyes fell on their soft-serve flavors. They not only had chocolate and vanilla flavors but also, hojicha, matcha, and ube. Plus, you could get them in a swirl or just as two flavors in a dish. I immediately decided that I wanted the Hojicha and Ube pairing. My son got the Matcha and Ube combo. Both were good. I liked all the flavors. Hojicha was my favorite, followed by Matcha, and then Ube. Each of these ice cream had rich flavor and the texture was smooth. The pricing of the soft-serve was on the high side but the portion size was good. The Ice cream is made in-house including the Hojicha. The shop was busy. It was frequented by U of I students, it seemed. The service was good. I'd go back here if I were to be in Champaign again. Check it out.

Also, just these 2 things, they cost 20 dollars !!!! I'm sorry, maybe I would be nicer if your shit didn't cost 20 dollars for restaurant depot jello. Service was great, the employees were nice, and the cafe was pretty empty, so I'd come here to hang out with friends or study if the food was better.

I had spied this classic roadside stand almost too late as we whizzed by, and realized instantly that we must stop. The perfect last hurrah for a weekend road trip! I asked for the Blizzard-equivalent (Snowstorm? Arctic Freeze? Frosted Flurry? ?), and the girls were kind enough to accommodate my menu-improvisation of half M&Ms, half Spanish peanuts (aka "peanut M&M"). But I also figured that if I were eating unscheduled dessert, I may as well eat an unplanned lunch too, so I ordered a hot dog. I was leery, especially with the prep speed, but it came out big and plump and fresh-looking. Mmm, all-beef goodness. I wolfed down that wiener to get to my dessert, which might have been in danger of melting in the hot Jundiana sun. One of my biggest culinary pet peeves is soft-serve ice cream that comes out of the machine at about 31.8 degrees, so that as soon as it hits the cup, the edges begin to soupify. Not this stuff--it stayed firm and frozen until the very end. Sometimes it's the little things, man, but that sealed the four stars for me. Oh, and it tasted great. This outfit has mini-golf too. Mini golf, hot dogs, and ice cream! That's like my ideal birthday party right there. And I don't mean 12, either; I mean 32.
