Fantastic place for a light lunch. The draw is fresh ingredients served simply. I ordered the hummus sandwich and house onion soup. The sandwich was served on their sweet batard that was pillowy and slightly moist like it came from the oven just an hour beforehand. The garlic hummus was generously spread over both sides with crisp lettuce and tomato -- and sweet pickles -- in between. The soup is flavored with only salt and pepper which gives it a warmth that complements the beef stock's savory taste. Overheard, while I waited for my lunch to be served: "This sandwich is amazing!" Up to now only bought bread and had lunch there. It is a great place to dine in. The staff are very nice and patient. They would greet you warmly and help you decide what to order. Moreover, if you come to this restaurant several times like me, chances are that one of the staff will recognize you. For the lunch, I often order the half sandwich and half salad/soup. The portion size is just enough for me, and their soup is of great quality! For bread, I usually buy whole wheat, or rye, or sourdough. Contrary to the one sold in supermarket, their bread is dense, with a strong, natural flavor of wheat/rye. Plus, if you like stone-hard bread, you should definitely try their rye! Besides good service, I also like the decorations in the restaurant. The create a cozy atmosphere with dim light and nostalgic furniture (table, stairs, etc.) ; and the fireplace makes it warm when dining in a freezing weather. I've always passed by the Bread Company on my way to class and have been meaning to try it since it looked very popular! I'm happy to say it has lived up to the hype. The exterior and interior of the Bread Company provides a rustic, European feel that is very comforting and welcoming. For food, I got the 1/2 Size Breakfast Sandwich with sausage which includes Swiss cheese, scrambled egg, & dijonnaise sauce. The sandwich was very good and hit all the right spots! I felt like the dijonnaise sauce added a unique flavor, elevating it past any normal breakfast sandwich. The workers were very kind and also recommended I add a house coffee that pairs well with the breakfast sandwiches. If I ever get the chance to visit Urbana again, I'd love to try their lunch/dinner menus! read more

My brother is a student on the campus and visits this establishment consistently. On my visit to the college for his graduation we decided to have dinner there. I ordered the crab cake salad with white sangria. I was so surprised over the flavor qualities in this delectable dish. The capers and the lemon vinaigrette dressing were so tasty I couldn't get enough of it and I loved that they provide two crab cakes instead of one. Loved this little gem of a spot right on campus. Came for lunch and had a half salad and sandwich and couldn't stop thinking about the chewy delicious sandwich bread that they bake in house. Highly recommend the combo. We had the hummus sandwich and the cheese sandwich. Came back today to try a hot sandwich. The Turkey was perfection. We ventured to try a different cold sandwich as well but unfortunately the egg salad was a mayonnaise goop. There was hardly any egg and the sandwich was dripping wet (literally watery egg Mayo juice). We salvaged the bread because it was so chewy to give up on. Sadly, can't recommend this item and wanted to love it, but there are so many other options to choose from that we can just move on. The ordering is outside and the line looks long but it moves pretty quickly. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Lunch is Monday - Friday. They also serve dinner and have booze! At first view, it looks like a small place. Inside, it's a bit weird too. A mixed between a deli and a tapa looking place. They sell gelato and sangria and bread in addition to deli American combos. The sandwich, soup, salad combos read underwhelming to me, so I kept my expectations really really low. I got the turkey sandwich and the lemon dressing garlic salad. I took my number to find a seat in the dark looking main parlor, but there was a back entrance to more seating. A big and sky lit multilevel cafeteria style venue with plenty of seating is tucked away, giving Italy vibes. We sat at the top and when I took that first bite, the bread and the salad were spectacular, a strong complement to one another. It was the best sammie salad combo I've had. I saw the waiter drop off an onion soup to another table and that looked remarkably delicious with oozing cheese. I was totally judgmental about the place and the food before I tried it. Nice place just east of the quad and definitely a lunch staple for me! for lunch they have a large selection of hot and cold sandwiches as well as salads and soups (i always get half a veggie sandwich and some french onion soup topped with a layer of gooey melted cheese) The interior is very rustic and cool, they have plenty of seating and i often end up studying there. The dinner menu is different than the lunch (i am not as familiar with it) but i believe it is mostly pizza and pasta. They close for about a half hour or so between meal times where they do a "kitchen flip" to switch between meals so plan your visit accordingly (i have unfortunately arrived in the middle of it so i had to wait a little longer). A good brunch place on campus! I had a full size breakfast sandwich with sausage as the topping and the house made coffee. The total cost was lower than 15 dollars, which was very reasonable. The sandwich was big enough for a starving girl in the late morning. I really like the balanced sauce and the cheese combinations at the middle of sandwich, but the taste was expected to be more profound if possible. The bread was a little crispy with a satisfactory texture as well as the extent of dryness, which I appreciated a lot. I studied for a while inside, and it also showed as a great working space. The environment was clean, the space was wide and big enough, it was a little dark inside, and there was not so much noise at that time. The wifi was sufficiently fast and stable, which I always attached great importance to when considering about the experience of a study spot. Stopped by before a show at the Krannert Center. No seats indoors so we sat outside. Really excellent service and a wonderful friendly and efficient server. We ordered drinks and she brought bread and butter. We had beef tenderloin, salmon appetizer, pasta. It was all very good. The place is so dirty. There is dust everywhere. The furniture is very, very old and both dirty and frayed. I swatted flies between bites, which didn't improve my mood. The photo shows the dirty windowsill with empty wine bottles lined up like it was someone's freshman dorm room. The dust and cobwebs may not show in the photo. The grimy, frayed upholstery shows black patches where hundreds of people have grabbed it with their dirty hands. Cozy, charming, and yummy- three words to describe a winter Saturday night at The Bread Company. A friend recommended the restaurant after enjoying it before, and we were happily surprised to find that it was restaurant week here in Champaign! So what does that mean? A special Prix Fixe menu for this week only (picture attached, try to make it in this week if you can.) For our starters, we got the bruschetta and lemon garlic baby greens. The winner was the baby greens- the light lemon and housemate croutons were great, while the bruschetta with goat cheese and olives was so-so. For main we went with the classic fondue. The potatoes!! So good! Just a moment to say that I'm glad that fondue restaurants are still going on in 2019, long after the initial US fondue boom. Also, it's a little cheesey (no pun intended) but a cute activity to do with your dinner partner. We got both deserts- zabaglione and chocolate bread pudding- and while a close race, zabaglione takes the lead on this course. They will not slice your bread for you when you buy a loaf. I get a answer that "we don't have a bread slicer" Sure you do it's called a employee and a knife! (being a bread company you might want to invest in a automatic slicer?) The artisan bread has very thick hard crust and difficult to cut at home even with a normal bread knife. The person at the counter suggested I buy a 30.00 knife on Amazon like they use. I say if you are not in rush hour and it is not busy cut my bread for me! There a thing called customer service. Cool spot to have some drinks and small plates type dishes. They have a nice + interesting decor - which I think could probably be categorized as urban rustic. The servers and bartenders are super nice amd super friendly! I really enjoyed the salmon with a red wine butter on top, and fillet mignon was super moist, juicy, tender and at the perfect temperature that really elevates it. All in all a nice experience. Bread Company has been around for 15+ years, it is the kind of local place that visitors to town are likely to miss, but it's worth checking out especially for those who like to avoid chain restaurants. I recently stopped by for Sunday brunch--something I almost skipped because their website didn't list a brunch menu (I thought I knew most of the brunches in town and didn't know Bread Company was an option until today). The service was friendly, but like a lot of local restaurants, the timing was not-so-great and generally felt inexperienced. The waiter offered slow-drip pour-over coffee, but called the coffee "blends" when they were actually single varietals (sorry, coffee nerd here). The Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, though, was aromatic and worth the extra charge (though it's reasonable to expect that the menu had listed the price or the waiter had known it after I asked: no luck on either). I waited much too long to place my order after sitting (and it was not busy). But the prosciutto and gruyere omelet (which I added spinach to with no problem) that arrived vastly exceeded expectations: it was flavorful, chock full of good ingredients and not overcooked. The pan-fried potatoes were spiced but not overly salty (though I sent them back when they arrived with a huge dollop of unmentioned sour-cream--ew). The baked bread was sourdough and crusty and a perfect accompaniment. Nice job, Bread Company. Great food. Lacking final star only because my waiter could have used some some further training on the menu and service timing. read more
