It's a wonderfully unique space--part wine and spirits shop, part lively daytime dining room--with a steady flow of customers browsing bottles alongside a full bar and tables occupied by ladies who lunch and retirees enjoying a relaxed weekday afternoon. It is a surprisingly chic space for Champaign. The dining room was busy enough that there would have been a wait for a table, but we were perfectly happy at the bar. Our bartender was very friendly and welcoming, even while clearly managing a high volume of guests in what felt like a short-staffed moment. Despite that, service remained warm and attentive. We shared the traditional fondue, which was generously portioned and stayed hot for an impressively long time thanks to their setup--ideal for lingering over conversation. We both enjoyed wine pairings, and I especially loved the Winter Warmer Knob Creek cider: cozy, well-balanced, and a standout choice, particularly for anyone who appreciates Knob Creek. Everybody knows you can't have Lil Porgy's rib tips without that signature sauce, so I ordered mine with extra sauce too. Unfortunately, I trusted them and didn't check the bag before leaving. It was stapled shut and I figured it would be fine. I drove the 20 minutes home, got back, and realized they gave me zero sauce. Nothing at all. The rib tips were completely dry. I called them, let them know I had driven 20 minutes just to get these tips, and they said they would make it right. So I drove another 20 minutes back to the restaurant. After all that, they only handed me the sauce I originally paid for. No apology, and nothing else offered as a courtesy for wasting my time and gas. Portillo's Champaign had a 4.4 rating out of (1,500+) which was the assurance I needed that I would have a quality experience. On the menu, I was interested in ordering either the Plant-based Garden Dog, or the Breaded Whitefish Sandwich. Out of both, I ended up choosing the Plant-based Garden Dog, which is highly a favorite of mine at Portillo's. Whether it be Grubhub or now Uber Eats, I love ordering online because it is convenient. Much praise to the Uber Eats delivery driver, Alexis, for arriving with my order in a reasonable time, as well as meeting me in front of the hotel as requested. And Alexis also confirmed that it was me grabbing the order, which I cannot thank him so much for. My mouth salivated as I took pictures of my order to share on yelp. The Crinkle-cut French Fries were the first item I started with eating and oh my they did not disappoint! While my eyes were peeled to the Georgia Bulldogs vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets college football game on television, my fingers were grabbing French Fries by the second to eat. As a lover of the Plant-based Garden Dog, these eyes of mine lit up prior to taking my first bite. A bite that left me satisfied as my tastebuds were met with the delicious garden dog and its toppings while at the same time poppy seeds fell from the bun. I swear!
