Everything about this place was perfect. I will definitely go back. The food was absolutely delicious and the desserts were perfection. It's pricey but you should already know if you come to a place like this. We spent about 380 for two people and worth every dollar. Enjoy perras! read more

What an amazing place. I went for lunch and ate about half the menu. Mussels Cauliflower Soup Cheese Board New York Steak Everything was so good! And the service is top notch. I would highly recommend making a reservation before eating as Spruce fills up quick. Everything on the menu was prepared so beautifully and the flavors were amazing! Steak was perfectly cooked and the sauce the mussels were cooked in was through the roof! Very pricey so be prepared to drop some stacks. Buts it's completely worth it. read more

We've been going since day 1. People, if you're looking for a great wine list, this beautiful spot has just that. First let's talk about the neighborhood. Love. Great to walk around after dinner. The staff, so sweet. The food, always an A+. This place just checks all the boxes. Go online and check our their menu. Its a nice selection. It's always changing. Christmas is one of our favorite times there. We went last night with friends visiting from London, and they both really enjoyed what they ordered. I think that, in and of it's elf a compliment, since our friend is a chef, and owns a few restaurants in London proper.if you haven't been, please add to your list of must tries... read more

This restaurant came highly recommended by my manager so we came here for our customer dinner. Sarah, the events manager helped us secured a reservation for 20 people in their private room and the space was just perfect. The wines selection was amazing and the entrees and desserts were delicious. I went for work for the first time so I wasn't able to take photos during my work event but I recall my salad, duck breast and the panna cotta dessert was AMAZING! Now back to my most recent dinner. I came here with seven other friends for my first SF birthday dinner and ressies for 8 people at 6:15pm was not too hard to get. I was told the burgers here are amazing and when we were seated, the burger was only part of the bar menu. We were quickly told that if that was what we wanted as our dinner, the server told us we can order from the bar menu. What impressed me most was before I even opened my mouth to ask for a napkin to remove my piece of chewing gum, he knew that was what I wanted to ask and brought napkins to the table. TALK ABOUT SERVICE! Also, when I got there, there was already a birthday card waiting for me and they gave me complimentary birthday pie with a candle. Everyone got burgers and they were all so happy with our meal. The steak tartare that we started with was delicious too. I would highly recommend this restaurant and I hope they will get Michelin rated soon! read more

While historically one of my favorite restaurants, they've recently lost my business. Sadly. This is specifically due to Mark's (one of the GMs) handling of an incident. The short of the incident is that a takeout order quoted to take 15 minutes was delayed to the tune of an hour, and the order was overcooked, and missed instructions. However, the real rub is the way Mark handled it after the fact. After speaking with a manager briefly, who was great, I received a call from Mark later simply telling me he'd refunded my order. As though I'm a beggar looking for free food (not to mention they'd wasted more time not believing I'd paid in the first place, when the last who'd rang my card was standing a few feet away, silently). Rather than speaking to the massive waste of time and terrible quality of the order, Mark simply assumed a couple of dollars back would suffice. Us patrons don't visit Spruce on a budget, we come for the service and high quality food. Reacting to incidents in this manner is highly disrespectful and I won't be coming back. read more

Great service and ambience. I had salmon which was over cooked and a bit greasy. I would have expected better tasting food.

I think this is my new favorite spot. When you walk in... you're eyes just go wow on how cool the restaurant looks. You don't expect it from the outside. The ceiling are high, the lighting is perfect, and it just and a cool chic feel to it. I was impressed as soon as I walked in. Our waiter was great. Super friendly, knowledgeable, and..... yes, he was a cutie. . My husband was like... damn they must be professional waiters here because everything is on point. Lol. We have the seared foie gras (you can ask for it seared -recommended by the waiter), seared duck breast (you can have the duck prepared a different way), and the steak. Everything was cooked perfectly. I will definitely come back to try their famous burger for lunch. I can't wait! read more

Spruce is our "go-to" San Francisco restaurant, both when we lived in SF and now anytime we have an opportunity to travel up north. The place is always hopping, both at the bar and in the main dining room. The waitstaff know the menu cold and have helped us decide among enticing options. I love the sliced duck breast - absolute favorite. You will not regret eating at Spruce! read more

Excellent!! Super great tasting food, great service (and sommelier), great intimate ambiance, and just a great time!! Not easy to get reservations but my boyfriend was able to get one for 9:30 pm. Worth the wait but if i come back would not want to eat that late. Food we had: -butternut squash soup to share. They poured in separate bowls so we got quite a bit. Really silky and delicious. Also had some cranberry something in the middle with nuts which was a nice touch. -the ravioli/tortellini thing in a lemony zest sauce. Really nice and tasty. Refreshing but still like a pasta. -they recommended some great wines with our meals; they have a sommelier on-site that's ready to offer suggestions) -finally, shared porterhouse (Consists or filet and New York) which was absolutely delicious! They bring it out to you before they cut it. Let me tell you, it was cooked to a perfect medium rare, so tender and juicy, and so tasty! Melted in my mouth. Great for a fancy night out or every once in awhile, unless you're a baller! read more

Comfortable outdoor dining experience with expertly presented food and knowledgable servers who were efficient and thoughtful without being intrusive. Spruce used to be one of my favorite venues for an overall great dining experience in SF, but it has been 10-12 years since I've returned due to my cross country move. The food was very good overall, but not quite up to par with my recollection from years ago (pre-Michelin days). To be fair, this may have been the result of my increased expectations since this establishment has received a Michelin star. However, there were a few dishes I found under-whelming and inconsistent with what could have been an excellent 5 star dining experience. See below for a summary of the dishes we ordered and shared between the 2 of us: First course 1) Hokkaido Scallops Crudo - excellent and well executed dish, especially with the yuzu/citrus sauce. The flavors were well balanced and refreshing as a starter. 2) Provencal Vegetable Soup - served at the perfect temperature and well displayed, but the flavors were bland and lacked inspiration. Second course Lobster Spaghetti: My favorite dish of the night and the best lobster pasta I have experienced to date, even surpassing what I've tried in Italy. The sauce was phenomenal, great balance between sweet and savory, creating the perfect umami flavor. Lobster cooked to perfection and expertly de-shelled and presented. Honey Lacquered Duck Breast: Served medium rare, and the meat was cooked well, but my least favorite dish of the evening...and I usually love duck! I expected the skin to be crispy because of the honey, but nothing about this dish impressed me, especially the flavor execution. Next... Menu special (shared): Wagyu beef (3 oz for $90 ): Again this was quite disappointing and over-priced. Beef was tender as was expected, but nothing special. I've had better quality wagyu at various venues for the price, including in different parts of Japan, although my comparison does not take into account my experiences in Japan (that would be unfair). I'm willing to pay a premium for wagyu without hesitation, but this was mediocre. Good wagyu does not require a lot of additional flavors/sauce. The beef should be able to stand on its own with subtle enhancements. Dessert Beignets: Served with chocolate sauce and creme Anglaise. The sauces were excellent, but the beignets were not light and fluffy. Tasted more like donut holes vs. beignets. Creme caramel: Very good, smooth, not overly sweet and heavy - perfect texture for flan (firm without being overly dense) Overall, good dining experience and we will come back. It won't be our top choice, given so many good options in the area, but still worth another visit. read more

The food is worth it. The duck was tender with crispy skin, the flavor goes so well together and the pork chop is smooth and tender too. We also ordered sweetbread not knowing what it was. Honestly wouldnt have ordered it if we knew what it was but it turned out so good! Everything we got there was on point! We were a little disappointed that the waitress's recs all are added cost. I dont think I got to understand the style of the chef from the recs. The beignets are simple but we loved it. Overall the food is worth the cost but not a place that we could go to often. read more

This was tough. We went for a special occasion, and while the staff was generally nice the service was not good. We waited 15-20 mins for cocktails and another 15-20 mins to order a bottle of wine with our main course. The wine took almost 30 mins and we ate our whole Wagyu beef course without it, which was a bummer. The Wagyu beef (which we paid 80 extra for!) was extremely fatty and mostly inedible. The sommelier was apologetic about the delay in wine (they were out of the one we ordered and were looking for a replacement) but nothing was done about it. We were then surprised to see it on our bill for almost 2x the amount we had asked to spend on wine, without any mention of it on their end. We spent over 300 per person, so definitely disappointing over all. read more

3.5 STARS Came here for my female cousin's 27th birthday with a group of 8 ladies. Located in an area surrounded by cute little boutiques and shops, we really enjoyed the mini walk from the car to the restaurant. With a reservation at 8:00pm, some of us arrived early and was taken into the dining area to this circular table right in front of this extensive wine wall stocked with bottles and bottles of wine. From the looks of it, those working the wine wall gets to taste a shit ton of wine! The ambiance was dark and quite romantic yet sophisticated. As we waited for the rest of the party to arrive, our server, Daniel, chit chatted with us about the drinks menu. After browsing through their menu, we decided on: APPETIZERS: - Steak Tartare ($17): not bad but not great.. came with a raw egg yolk in the middle that we mix in with the steak tartare and dip the bread in. The steak tartare was just ok; loved the texture but it was flavorless. The bread was super soft tho. - Turnip Soup ($18): bland - Fisherman's Mussels ($18): good amount of mussels and flavorful.  - French Fries ($6): can't say much but that it was just plain ol' salty fries... - Asparagus ($17): meh.... nothing great. 4 pieces of cold asparagus with not much taste....def not worth $17, imo. :\ ENTREES: - Lobster ($65): WOW ... my cousin really anticipated this entree and she was taken by surprised by the whole thing... the entree was like a soup and had a lobster that was literally the size of a scoop of ice-cream. She said it smelled better than it tasted. - New York Steak ($55): two ladies got this and they said it was ok. Although the steak did come out in the right temp as requested, the taste and overall flavors weren't jaw dropping good especially for the price... and portion - Duck Breast ($43): I, along with 5 others, got this dish and I for one, was pretty content with it. The duck breast was delicious and flavorsome. The meat was cooked just right and tender. They also incorporated some veggies to the dish which helped balanced out the flavors. DESSERT: Honestly, after our not so satisfying and average yet expensive meal, we were gonna pass on the dessert. Then Daniel brought out a lot of goodies and I can pretty much say this was the part where we can all agree on enjoying.  SERVICE: Daniel is an exceptional and fantastic server. Throughout our meal, he would pop in every so often to refill empty wine glasses and to ask if we needed anything. He was super thorough when explaining the dishes on the menus and he gave us some good cocktail suggestions. We were definitely taken by surprised when he brought out those desserts even when we passed on it. My cousin even got a birthday dessert! So sweet of him! The other waiters that helped cleared our table and refilled our water were all really polite and professional as well.  In total, our bill was ~$845 plus tip and a $38 SFEME surcharge. Probably not gonna come back anytime soon.. but maybe one day. P.S. The complimentary bread and butter were so yummy. I especially loved the cranberry bread. read more

Spruce - Birthday dinner for the cousin's 27th! Steak tartare, mussels, asparagus, New York steak, duck breast, and lobster. - American Near Me - San Francisco, California

Came here for a birthday, scallop appetizers were great, we got the chicken roulade and the duck as entrees. Chicken was decent, but the duck breast honestly tasted like it had gone off, very sickly sweet flavor. They did switch out the duck breast for the salmon which was average. The duck was so bad my boyfriend felt he was going to be sick after a few bites. Cheese cake dessert was average the baked Alaska was nice. Overall definitely not a Michelin experience, we were disappointed. read more

Great lunch at spruce. Outdoor setup was comfortable with a nice ambiance and our server Gabrila was a standout.

We ordered takeout from Spruce. This is something they're offering during covid. We got the corn velouté as an appetizer and salmon and duck entree. It was really good! They packaged the food well so that the items don't mix. We plated it nicely for our dinner at home and the experience was still nice. I wish there was a card just explaining and describing the food. That's definitely part of the dining in experience that I miss. The descriptions always make the food more enticing. The salmon skin was still crispy and the food was still slightly warm. I would say that the corn bread was a little dry but paired with the velouté it was good. Very corny haha. read more

Finally have decided. The Spruce Burger is my favorite SF burger. A very robust, beefy, medium rare patty with delicious white cheddar, tomatoes, butter lettuce and homemade pickles, all sandwiched between two pillowy English muffin buns with out of the world aioli (??) on the side. Was $29 after tip/tax/self pick up so not the cheapest choice, but the flavor is worth the splurge! So meaty! read more

This was a last minute reservation, and I still appreciated the fact that I could even get one reservation at Spruce, conveniently located in a cosy residential area. Lovely and quiet. Bar menu was different from the main dining hall, so I opted for the latter, just to enjoy a full experience. Spruce does not serve tasting menu, so I paid extra attention when my waiter explained the courses. Seared scallop and the duck breast were the top two choices, so I opted for the duo. Scallop - this is flawless. It was marinated so well that definitely preserved the full of taste. Mushroom only made the flavor more complex. The subtle smoke taste had marked a perfect finish. It was the queen of my heart. Duck breast - this is impressive. Every bite, I felt like it was dancing on my tongue. Reminded me the super delicious duck at EMP. Well, this one was larger in size, so clearly a winner from this aspect. When I was trying to order dessert, my waiter was very considerate and mentioned that the portion might be too large for me and suggested a half order. Yes, I did not even finish my half order, very much appreciate the heads-up. This is truly my best experience so far. Felt love from each single dish. In my opinion, fine dining is not only about the food quality, about the texture, but also about love and care, about story-telling. I found every piece of puzzle here at Spruce. Thanks for having me. read more

I've been to Spruce twice and would definitely pay another visit. I went for their Restaurant Week menu and would recommend the cauliflower veloute as an appetizer, which had an amalgamation of complimentary flavors of shrimp, garlic, egg yolk, cauliflower and parsley. I found the kale to be only modestly dressed with dressing and croutons. Although I'm not a huge fan of burgers, I can say that I have never seen an English muffin bun on a burger. For those skeptical and wary, let me tell you that this is no ordinary English muffin your mom used to make you for breakfast. Honestly, i didn't even know English muffins could be artisanal, fluffy and thick the one that sandwiched Spruce's burger patty (which btw was comparable in size to one of the buns). The patty was oozing with juice, lightly seared on all surfaced and cooked medium to perfection. The duck was on the small side and 70% crispy, 30% not crispy (seriously, not your average Asian deli roasted duck). My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed how the oil oozed out of the skin as we crunched through every bite. The ricotta ravioli could have been left out of this dish, as it added no complementary flavors nor was it dressed in any of the existing or new sauces. The best was definitely saved for last. The chocolate mousse with coffee ice cream, cocoa nibs and Macallan was a dessert made in heaven. The dish showcased many textures but maintained a very rich experience throughout. Heaven in your mouth. I'm coming back just for this one. read more

We went back to Spruce for New Year's Eve dinner and had a wonderful time. We asked to be seated in Robin D's section since she was great during our last visit. Robin is so knowledgeable about the menu, pairings, and has a great personality. The food was delicious and since we had a last seating reservation all the other diners had departed in our section by the time the clock struck midnight. Thank you for a lovely evening and providing such an outstanding experience and delicious meal. Cheers. read more

The other reviews are mostly accurate. This is a place for old people. At age 35, I was by far the youngest person in the restaurant for lunch by about 30 years. Think retired ladies dining here with their society sisters. That says nothing about the quality of the restaurant, but it did make me feel out of place. I did the fixed price lunch harvest menu. Started with four oysters, which were very good, not at all gritty. The waiter brought me out a taste of vichysoisse on the house. This was delicious. Lunch was salmon in an onion and bechamel sauce topped with a large sheet of pasta. It was an odd dish. The salmon and bechamel was tasty, but I wish it had a different pasta with it. For dessert, I got the mille-feuille (Napoleon). This was the standout of the meal. Don't skip dessert. I wish the pastry layers were a bit crisper (they got soggy), but the cream and fresh oranges and blood oranges were delicious. Anyway, nothing inherently wrong with this restaurant. I don't understand why it has a star though. I didn't find it special in any regard. Rather, it was sort of stuffy. read more

Spruce has become one of our go-to places for consistently great food, service, and ambience. We've been here at least 5 times for brunch and dinner in the last couple of months, and we have not been disappointed. For a fine-dining sort of place, it never feels fancy or pretentious -- but it does feel like you're someplace special and worth the price of admission. Their abundant outdoor seating is also what keeps us coming back again and again. Bonus points for hiring some of the best waitstaff in the City: Faith, for example, was our server during a recent Sat. brunch and she was awesome! read more

TLDR: good food and good service, but missing something... Came for Saturday brunch at 1pm without a reservation and we were seated promptly at a bar table (bar and bar table for a la carte menu while main dining room requires the prix fixe). To be honest, everything about our experience there was amazing. The seats were super comfortable, there was good music but it wasn't too loud, our waitress was amazing, and the food was good (it came out a little slower than expected but not outrageous).l I got the spruce burger ($22) with cheese ($7) and grilled onions ($2) while my girlfriend got the snake river ranch pork belly. After my girlfriend took her first bite of her dish, her eyes widened and face lit up because it was so so good. My patty was cooked perfectly medium well and it was so juicy. While both dishes looked really small, we were unbelievably full by the end. The burger also comes with this green herb mayo that tastes really good. Everything went flawlessly, but I can't bring myself to give this place a 5. I think it's just that there's nothing pulling me to go back again. Maybe I'm just not into fancy burgers? But I would try the croque madame next time I am there! read more

Would like to start with something positive - the pastrami sandwich. Nothing to complain about there. Very nice. Now on the other hand, the sweet potato entree was three bites. 1,2,3 and it's all gone. It costs $34 dollars. And if that's not enough to chew on an auto 20% gratuity applied even to to-go orders. I bought two of them so it was like $500 to make two new enemies, both starved and blaming me. I'm always happy to tip restaurant staff but can you give people actual lunch to eat? That meal was a cruel diet. People have jobs to go back to after lunch and they depend on meals with more than 20 calories to get them through the rest of their day. Please help us! One thought is you could redirect money from interior furniture and put it into ingredient costs - sweet potatoes being more affordable than dated opulence. read more

We have an unofficial tradition of spending Easter in New York when our schedules & the stars & moon align. This was not one of those years. Midway through our lamentation of being here rather than there, we were lead to our table in an alcove looking out onto the restaurant. Well, this was nice -- a modern spot with a glorious bar & patrons in their pastels. As we perused the pre fixe menu, full of options that made deciding almost impossible, we forgot about the there & focused on the here & now. He chose Chilled Spring Pea Soup, which was a cool, retro shade of green, & Salmon Mi-Cuit, a dish that looked too light & healthy for my taste. As a starter, I ordered granola with sheep's milk, berries, & honeycomb & had Eggs Benedict with asparagus as my main. All well prepared & plated. Creative, certainly, but dessert didn't achieve the same wow factor as the first two courses. The amuse bouche of sorts, homemade cinnamon rolls & cream cheese frosting, served as a delightful end to our meal. $70 per person not including tax & gratuity. Spruce pulls out all the stops where elegance, service, & fancy flatware is concerned; I'm not prepared to be on my best behavior every time I go out to dinner, however, without being too stuffy or expensive, Spruce makes a special occasion feel even more special, so I'd recommend them for such events. read more

Wow. Michelin starred restaurants really do it differently. After leaving my initial review, the restaurant managers reached out to me by phone to apologize and to invite me and my girlfriend back to show that our first experience was an outlier among thousands of amazing dining experiences at Spruce. The difference between our first and second dinners was like night and day. The table candle was lit, the servers served on the correct sides of the table, the waiter made sure our glasses were always lined up properly, and they served crackers in lieu of rolls for my vegan girlfriend without having to mention it again. Every server was attentive to our needs and not once did we have to wave anyone down for anything like last time. Our glasses were always full and the man in charge of the bread made sure I always had another roll on queue. I was even happier when the waiter offered to keep our entrees warm in the kitchen while my date used the bathroom, and brought it out promptly when she returned. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time and I am so glad we came back. The attention to detail was there and the glowing reviews for Spruce reflect this fact. Thank you to the managers and the Spruce team for providing us with the full and proper dining experience. We look forward to returning in the future. read more

The vaulted ceiling and studded leather chairs make this modern restaurant feel classic yet contemporary, much like the menu and its reimagined take on elegant eats. It's no wonder Michelin awarded Chef Mark Sullivan's micro-seasonal menu with a coveted star. His California ingredients bolster simple yet refined dishes like honey-lacquered duck breast, Hudson Valley foie gras, roulades of juicy guinea hen and a veritable smorgasbord of decadent desserts. Spruce is practically an institution in Presidio Heights: chic, inventive and eager to play with your curious palate. Visited for Valentine's Day and was really excited, but left disappointed. Menu was prix fixe with 5 courses. First two were good: oysters (which was only one singular oyster each) and a beet salad. Third was a mushroom consomme soup, which left a lot to be desired. Main course was a choice between lobster, veal, and roast chicken. My girlfriend and I both opted for the lobster. The flavor of the cream sauce was good and the gnocchi were fine, but the lobster was a tad over cooked. We had both desserts. They were visually appealing, but tasted a bit stale and dry. We had to wait 15 minutes to be seated even though we made a reservation. Service was fine, but drinks took quite a long time. Overall I was very let down. Dinner for two with gratuity ran ~$550. I understand that you're going to pay a premium on Valentine's Day, but I've had meals in San Francisco that were heads and shoulders above this one for half the price. The wine list was impressive. For a special occasion or date night, unfortunately I cannot recommend Spruce. Maybe it would be better for a casual lunch or dinner. read more

I've been to Spruce on many occasions, but only recently for brunch - wow, such an amazing experience! I've had their incredible burger (my favorite in the city), but I also had the chance to try some of the other brunch offerings: -Buttermilk Pancakes: these are not ordinary pancakes...they're thick, rich and perfectly buttery. They arrive with sliced almonds and honey butter. If you want a decadent take on a traditional breakfast favorite, this is it. 25 Lusk used to have a similar pancake when they offered brunch and this is a good replacement. -Pastrami Hash: an extremely flavorful take on an American classic, this has kimchi and purple potatoes with flavorful pieces of pastrami...very good. -Beignets: probably the softest, lightest and perfectly cooked beignets I've ever had. They arrive with a fruit compote and rich crème anglaise...a great way to start of finish a meal. -Cinnamon Rolls: These were tasty treats with the perfect amount of sweetness...the cream cheese frosting perfectly balanced the entire dish. A meal would be incomplete without this dish at the table. As always, the service is excellent. I've never had a bad experience here...definitely check it out if you're looking for a special occasion brunch. read more
