Our couch had some cat scratching damage and we went to Spruce to look for some upholstery fabric to make arm covers to cover the affected areas. The gentleman who met us was extremely helpful. Initially we looked at some new fabric but we could not find a match. We were then encouraged to look at remnant sample book and we found a couple of samples that looked promising. Imagine buying a new house. Paying a deposit for custom shades and drapery. Having a poor product installed. And the result being a cop banging on your door serving you a lawsuit... That is my experience working with Spruce. Clarissa communicated with me from the start of my experience. She would call and text me with design ideas. Very responsive. After the install and after paying a majority of the invoice, I pointed out what they needed to fix. There response was sending a new $2,000+ fix (for work that was not done very well to start). After receiving this additional invoice I never heard from them again. No phone call. No texts. I figured they were working out a solution and would call or text me when they came up with a solution. This morning I was woken up to a cop banging on my door and serving me papers that Spruce filed a lawsuit. They're claiming I still owe them money and they filed a personal lawsuit against me. They didn't once call or text to say anything was past due. I never was told them I wouldn't pay... I just assumed they were working out how to fix their subpar shades. Normally I would never even leave a Google review. Even for a bad product (which this is). I am leaving a Google review to let anyone know who is thinking about contracting with Spruce that if you're unhappy with the job they do expect a cop to show up at your house to wake you up and serve you papers. read more

NOT a typical couch-recovering story. I bought a custom $600 cover for my nice pickup truck (that lives outdoors) this past January. The cover is constructed of marine-grade Sunbrella fabric, and is warranted for 7 years -top of the line. Long story short, about two weeks after I received it, an animal (most likely a squirrel, I am advised) chewed a hole through the cover on top of the cab. My warranty didn't cover rodent damage, so I had to buy a yard of the matching material from the cover manufacturer, and figure out how to install a patch on the cover (other than by hand-stitching) that would look good and last the life of the cover. I searched for someone to handle this task for me, and tried sail makers, tent and awning makers, and struck out. I thought about an upholstery service, and found Spruce online. I submitted their online form to request a quote, describing my problem and repair needs. Within 24 hours, Lexy emailed me to request photos of the project. I sent those photos to her and answered her questions about what I wanted, and got a quote the next day. Spruce's quote was extremely reasonable and well within my budget for the project, so I arranged to drop off the cover and my extra fabric. As part of my project, I had Spruce add an extra layer of the fabric on the inside of the cover over areas that would stress and wear the fabric over time (shark-fin satellite antenna on the cab roof and fender radio antenna areas). ONE day later, my cover was repaired and reinforced exactly as I had requested, and the price was firm - no extra charges. I was treated wonderfully by everyone at the shop, and was pleased by their curbside service and pandemic-era efforts to maintain the health and safety of their shop and their customers. We recently had cushions for an old set of outdoor wicker furniture reupholstered by Spruce. Our set included a swing, a sofa, a rocking chair, and another chair. The original cushions that came with the set were pretty thin and damaged by squirrels, but the wicker was in good shape so we looked for someone to replace the cushions. We looked at several companies to replace the cushions and decided on Spruce. The folks there were very knowledgeable and helpful, discussing details we weren't even aware with regard to fabric choice and orientation. Though the quotes were a little higher than others, the cushions proposed by Spruce were substantially better than what we had and what others proposed. Their cushions were thicker and much more comfortable, zippered, much better foam and upholstered with Sunbrella fabric, so we went forward with the project. Katherine met me at our house to measure and make templates for the new cushions. When the cushions were completed I picked them up, brought them home, and put them on the furniture. The swing cushion fit perfectly, but the other three were a little small. I think Katherine and I had a miscommunication about how we wanted the other cushions to fit the furniture. When I called Katherine she immediately said she would come to our house to see our concerns about the cushions. She brought a colleague, and they remeasured the furniture and remade three new cushions--no questions asked. When the cushions were completed, they brought the cushions back to the house and they fit perfectly. We couldn't be more pleased with the finished cushions and especially how Spruce and Katherine handled the situation. The cushions are very high quality. Katherine was fantastic to work with. She never once ever hesitated to resolve the issue with the cushions to our satisfaction. I can't speak highly enough of Spruce and Katherine. The cushions are ten times better than the cushions that originally came with the furniture and worth every penny! We will definitely be using Spruce for our upholstery needs in the future. We no longer leave our cushions outside even though they are on a covered front porch. Those pesky little squirrels will never have a chance to damage these awesome cushions! They are endlessly stylish, super-helpful and so friendly, really know their stuff, have amazing craftsmanship and an astonishing selection of hip, beautiful, high-quality fabrics (very rare in Austin). I went in expecting my project to be a 6 month affair, starting with me walking in and saying "I am looking for a small chair, something from the 20s-40s, then redone in funky fabric, preferably loud fuzzy.... GO!" Thinking I would hear from them in the distant foggy future when they found something. But instead it went something like this: Saturday afternoon I stroll in. I give them the scoop. I point to a nearby rocking chair and say, "something like that, but not a rocker." Taking me to a back workroom, Lizzie points at a lonely chair ready for a revamp and says, "You mean, like that?" Y-E-S, just like that! They had snapped the chair up in their travels... The arm was broken and the horsehair was springing out of the ancient leather, but they swore it could all be made beautiful again. The gem in the rough -- that was my chair. Now for fabric: I am thinking I will need to go rounds and rounds, since I am picky-as-heck designer and looking for something funky in the hot pink / magenta family. After looking at a few pieces, again, the gals work their magic, flipping to a piece of fabric that is everything I wanted -- and then some. And that was that. Three weeks later I picked up my custom beauty. The cracked arm had been repaired perfectly, the old wood still had it's amazing antique patina just minus the cobwebs and grime, and the fabric was perfect -- diamond tufted to exacting perfection. I received a chair class at Spruce as a Christmas gift from my mother-in-law. I couldn't say more good things about the class or our instructor, Katherine and her helper Lilly. The two days were hard work, but very fun, interesting and rewarding! I have a new found appreciation for the art of upholstery and the hard work, craftsmanship and skill that goes into it! Once we got connected by email, Katherine was super responsive with details we needed to know to prepare for the class. I emailed her several photos of my chair and fabrics and she was very useful in helping me select a fabric that would be lovely but still easy enough to work with for my first project. The class took place over two days -- a Saturday and Sunday -- and it took the whole time and more! Katherine taught us out how strip our chairs down to just the frame and then rebuild them piece by piece. She was extremely patient with all of us and mixed a good balance of helping us and letting us do things ourselves. She worked with us until we got them looking great, which was awesome for me as I tend to be a perfectionist. She even stayed late to make sure we all got all the critical parts of our chairs finished by the end of class. Spruce's studio was well organized and they had all the tools we needed to reupholster our chairs. I had no idea the amount of tools or supplies that would go into the project, but it was so nice to have everything you needed set out and never more than a few feet away. As 'experts', employees of Spruce should provide ALL relevant information to potential customers, so that they are able to make an informed decision: 1. My choice of fabric for the sofa is actually recommended, [by the manufacturer], for drapery. 2. Goose down mixed with feathers is 'top of the line' and would have achieved the 'yummily plump' cushions I specifically requested. It is 'about double the price of foam. 3. My husband and I had a ragged, but well loved mid-century sofa we wanted reupholstered. I heard about Spruce from a local vintage shop in town. They indicated that Spruce Upholstery specialized in mid-century furniture. Their quote was reasonable and they gave me some good recommendations on fabrics (but also mentioned they could order some for me). My sofa also had original down cushions that were looking a bit flat, when they reupholstered the sofa, they put in foam and added down top pillows, to keep the down feel with a more structured look. My husband wanted to toss the old sofa out, but once he saw their work, the sofa redeemed itself. He now says it's the most comfortable coolest looking sofa in the world...I think he's right. THANK YOU SPRUCE FOR SAVING MY ANTIQUE CUSHIONS!!! The score of my life has been this amazing Heywood Wakefield couch that had original fabric on it in mint condition due to it always being covered. Seriously gorgeous fabric that in a bout of panic my dog completely shredded during a rain storm. She's never seen me so angry. Perfect, original cushions with springs and everything. I thought the couch was ruined. We took it to Spruce and the ladies didn't want to promise us anything at first, and I don't blame them as what was left was a bit of a mess. However, they looked things over and determined they could save a good chunk of the fabric and replace portions with a solid. We found something that matched as closely as possible and I left everything in their hands. Oh. My. God! It looks AMAZING! They were able to salvage the top and most of the sides and even the springs that were part of the guts. They added zippers to the whole thing so we can easily remove the covers and just did an outstanding job. I was concerned they'd look weird with the remaining cushions that survived, but it looks terriffic. I have my couch back! You may pay a little more here, but the quality is definitely worth the price. read more

We so wanted to like this company. We went in on a Saturday and brought in one of our dining chairs with us to get an estimate on the cost of recovering all 7 of them. The two employees there were friendly and helpful and there were nice samples of their work in the store. We picked out a fabric that, according to their price listing, was $35.90/yard. I quickly calculated an estimate for the labor, fabric, and foam, but the employee said that she couldn't give us an "official" bid until Tuesday. Having quickly calculated the estimate on-the-spot ourselves, we were confident that the "official" bid would be about $898 and that seemed a reasonable price for recovering 7 dining chairs. We decided to leave the dining chair we brought with us because we figured we would probably accept the "official" bid. As promised, we received the official bid by email on Tuesday, but the cost was $1,206.99, much higher than expected. The employee wanted to charge us $74/yard of fabric rather than $35.90/yard. She also asked for photos of my chairs, which was odd because we had left the chair there so that she could draft her "official" bid. I had to remind her that the chair was there. Not at all satisfied with this "official" bid, I did a very quick search of the fabric online and found the fabric on sale on several sites for as low as $28.72/yard. So, I went back to Spruce today and said that I wanted to retrieve my chair and explained that we would still consider having our chairs recovered by them, but if so, the bid would need to be redone because the bid for the fabric was more than double the price on the list in the fabric swatch book. One of the employees who had been there on Saturday and helped us with the fabric remembered that the price was definitely not $74/yard. We eventually found the fabric swatch book and found that the price was, indeed, listed as $35.90/yard. The other employee there (not the same one who helped us that Saturday) then looked up the price online and said that the fabric had increased in price to $37/yard. I mentioned that I had found it online for as low as $28.72/yard and asked whether I could buy the fabric myself and bring it in for them to use. She said "Yes, but we'll have to charge you $7.50/yard." This, I think, is very unreasonable. Given the negative experience we had with the "official" bid, one would think that a good business practice would be to offer to forego at least the $7.50/yard fee for bringing in one's own fabric or offer some similar discount. Nothing of the kind was offered, so we will be looking elsewhere for reupholstery. Buyer beware! Be sure to do your own calculations and scrutinize your bid from Spruce! read more

Spruce impressed me - I had a small rip in the cushion of a beloved couch that needed repair. They were able to make things right again very quickly - even offering to shift other work around a bit if I needed things done faster. I probably paid more for their work than at another shop in town, but their professionalism was a big plus. I'll be back to Spruce with other 'projects'. read more

This is a decidely mixed review based on two completely different experiences. On the one hand, I had a bench re-upholstered. It came out great, though I did experience one snafu. I was told the job would require five yards of fabric. Fortunately, before the fabric was ordered by the store (though after I had placed the order), I realized the estimate could not possibly be right. I have sewing experience and pulled out a tape measure. Sure enough, only three yards were needed. I don't know who would have ended up footing the bill for the extra $100 of fabric, but at least I caught the mistake in time. I was told "these things happen." The second part of the story features two chair seats that I asked them to re-upholster . The job was really easy (I had had this done years earlier): Replace the foam and staple two disks of fabric to the wooden platform just like the samples I gave them. Instead, I got foam that was thinner than the 18-year-old cushions on which we were sitting and in putting the seat back together, the product ended up too bulky and wouldn't even fit back in the chairs. Unfortunately, I was better off before I started this project. The owner agreed to refund me the cost of the work, but now I've got to start over elsewhere. And I'll add that on these I also wasn't that impressed by the workmanship. The fabric was pulled so taut in some spots that I have dimples in the foam. read more

If I had seen the bench I made in some store somewhere for two hundred-fifty, I'd have bought, it seriously. But, instead, I made it myself and learned how to make more for that same great price! I could not stop disrupting class with squeals of delight after every super cool step. That's how much I loved the "Work of Art" I took home, thanks to Amanda and Claire. What awesome ladies. Amanda is a fem-phenom; she started this all woman-owned, great local business, very eco (recover, reuse, recycle), and is now making movies and teaching her craft. I made the mistake of equating cost with quality, and feel that I must share my unhappy experience with Spruce. In February of last year I spent over $2000 ($2165 to be exact) to have a beloved sofa redone. Wouldn't ya think that would be enough to put down-proof covers on the throw pillows? When the down started coming out, I went to them, thinking they would fix the problem. No. They told me to do it myself. Then the fabric started puckering and stretching out. The hem is puckered. Hard lumps have come up underneath the cushion (springs?) The fabric has worn against the frame. Further contact with the manager has been to no avail. I have been polite always, but she has refused an invitation to come see the sofa or to call me on the phone. They are very nice and helpful BEFORE you spend your money....but not after. read more

The trick was that I live in NY and they're in TX!
