I had a lesson to learn more about my embroidery machine today but the person never showed up. When I signed up for the lesson I was told to bring everything for my machine so I got everything all packed up and got to the store a little early to get set up. When I walked in a lady showed me to the table in the back so I could set up and so I set my machine up and waited. and waited and waited for over 30 minutes and no one came. There were a number of other ladies talking by the cash register who were all in eye shot but I never got an update on where the teacher was. I packed up my things and left walking in the middle of everyone and none of the employees said a thing. I was looking forward to learning how to properly use my embroidery machine so I could take more embroidery classes but that will not be happening here. I will not be going back. my wife swears by this place and the amazing women that work there. she drives 30+ minutes each way to even pick up small things, because she knows the too notch service she will get with it. The women are very educated on the products they have and are incredibly friendly. its true that they go out of their way to help you, even if it's on a machine you didn't purchase from their store. you can tell sewing and embroidering is their passion and they're very good at it. it's a special community with great pricing! 10/10 read more

I decided to go in and as soon as she came out of her office she had a nasty attitude and said I would have to leave the machine and I said we'll you said you would look at it really quick and to bring it in. I would give this business 100 stars if I could. Not only is every single worker there helpful and extremely kind, so is the owner Mary. I am a new sewer/embroiderer and I have had many situations where I needed help quick--they drop what they're doing to help, provide knowledge on my machine & even offer to sit down and help! Not only have I never had this type of exceptional service from a business, I've never had a group of women come together to help me like they did ever! Their hearts are huge and they always go out of their way to help their customers--they even offer free drinks and snacks. Their machines and products are top notch and their education of them is outstanding. They always try to make it work with whatever budget you have and are very understanding. Even when they're very busy, which they are, they will always find time to help you and greet you at the door. It feels like a big family. Highly highly recommend checking them out. read more

I've been a loyal Northwest Sewing Center customer since 2016 - I bought my Janome there, and they also brought my 1970s Kenmore and my 1920s Singer back to life. I recommended them to everyone! But at the end of April, I had a truly terrible service experience. My Janome was beeping erratically, and inputs to the machine - buttons, pedal - were not reliably working. The repairman plugged it in and the buttons and pedal worked, so he told me it must be my power strip. I told him other things plugged into that power strip work just fine, and he said no, that power strip is at least ten years old(?), and you are probably just not plugging it in right. He shoved the plug in my face and tried to tell me the prongs weren't properly spaced, and said he would just be babysitting it if I left it with him, because there's nothing wrong with it. At this point, he was yelling at me, and the other customers in the shop were staring and giggling nervously. I totally get being frustrated at not being able to replicate the issue! It's hard to repair things when you can't see anything wrong. And who knows, maybe he was just having a bad day. But I don't know why anyone would be this rude to a customer, or go out of their way to make them feel stupid. Needless to say, I did not leave it with him to be repaired. Instead, I ended up googling my machine's service manual, determining that input issues were likely related to a failing motherboard (not my inability to plug things in), ordering the part online, and replacing it myself. It now works great. I've never repaired a sewing machine in my life, so I'm glad for the DIY experience, but I'm bummed that I no longer have Northwest Sewing Center as a resource. read more

Even though I bought my machine from a competitor, the ladies have always gone above and beyond to make you feel comfortable in their shop, answer questions, and make suggestions to improve my work. I also found my grandmother's featherweight machine in an shed. The gentleman went restored it beautifully. It's such a fun experience to make my granddaughter dresses on it. read more

Mary specifically and Northwest Sewing in general are some of the greatest and most helpful people you will meet. They sold me my first "real" sewing machine in 30 years during the pandemic. Janome something or other, that just worked like a dream. I eventually got more into quilting and doing art quilts and I returned to see if they sold machines with auto stitch regulators. Mary was so helpful in demonstrating, teaching, and showing me everything the machine I was interested could do. They also had a 2 year no interest program that I could use to finance it, making it even easier to justify in my mind! So I walked out of there with a beautiful Janome M8 machine and the quality, quiet, and ease of sewing on that thing is unlike anything I have ever used. I had wanted a long arm machine for the longest time, but they cost as much as a new car and take up space I do not have in my small, modest size home. This was the perfect compromise. Not near as expensive for what it does and if you already know how to sew, it is easy to figure out and get sewing right away. The automatic stitch regulator ROCKS and it runs so quietly you would think you are sewing in the clouds. Mary spent as much time as I needed going through everything and was so patient with all my questions. I love this machine, love NW sewing center, and love Mary and the rest of the staff over there. I already know from my first machine, they have excellent service and support (whenever there was a problem w my machine, it was usually user error!) Don't go to Joanne's...stay local and buy from NW sewing. You will not regret it!! read more

They where able to show me all the reasons why it wasn't running and could explain in detail the costs. Very disappointed in this business. I brought my sewing machine to check it out, they immediately wanted to do tune up without even knowing if it is needed. Second, they did not communicate it will take around 3 weeks until they even open it, just to open it was $40, ladies were so freaking slow, what could of have been 10 min ordeal, took an hour. The first place we went to had one at a reasonable price but my wife who has a masters degree and I who spent 20 years as a manufacturing engineer could not thread the tiny slots . Place number two had one where we could thread the slots but the price was close to buying a car . Then we found the Northwest Sewing Center . The owner had the perfect machine and spent time showing us how it worked . Simple , dependable and reasonably priced . So dissatisfied! I brought my serger sewing machine to look at as it seemed like having a small problem. It worked fine for 10 min then thread came off from. Anyway, I could have just kept using it, but I wanted them to look if there is something wrong with it and if it is easy to be fixed. The lady first told me it will be $90 for serger maintenance and I told her my machine costed me like less than $200 so I don't want to pay that much. She said she will charge $20 to look at it. So I paid and left. Got a phone call a week after and she said it's ready to be picked up. They charged me the labor fee of $99. I was not planing to spend that much for this machine and wish she could have told me before fixing it as she already knew that I would not want to pay that much. read more

She demonstrated some of the features for me and offered a free private lesson! They also had a promo recently where you got a free bag with a machine purchase that had recently ended but she gave it to me anyways! Another note-- I was a bit nervous taking my two young children into a sewing boutique full of expensive equipment. How does a guy like me find his way in to a sewing shop? I acquired an old Singer sewing machine that I hoped could be a constructive new hobby for my girlfriend. One problem though, the machine couldn't make it further than a couple inches without jamming up with thread. A tireless tinkerer, I dissected the machine, read every online resource, and re-assembled the machine. In the process I lost a tiny screw necessary to regulate bobbin tension (a term just learned). I was pretty bummed out, knowing I had to buy an entire replacement part as I doubted they sold tiny screws separately. Luckily I found this place just minutes from my apartment. I arrived at 5:50 pm, just 10 minutes before close. I was worried I'd be greeted by an annoyed employee who was ready to go home and not answer some neophyte questions about a missing screw. I was welcomed in by an older gentleman who it turned out was the owner (Leroy). Not only did he give me a free replacement screw off of a broken part but talked to me for a while about my machine's problems and assured me if I couldn't fix it, to bring it in and they could fix it in-house. Our conversation also led to how long they had been open (since '67, but changed locations several times), His own history in the industry (started out in textiles in the military), a new design for boxer shorts I had envisioned while repairing my machine, and of course how good the city of Austin has treated his business. I felt obligated to buy at least a little something for this man's time and advice so I picked up a couple spools of thread and assured him I would send my girlfriend for all her sewing needs and maybe we'd even take a class together that they teach. I was concerned they wouldn't take credit cards as this place looked pretty old-school, but my fears were unfounded; He busted out the old credit card swiper and calculator. I followed his advice upon arriving home and low-and-behold my machine is running like a champ. I would strongly reccomend checking this place out. They are patient with beginners and have years, decades, a generation of experience and they aren't shy about sharing it. I didn't know a bobbin from a baste, but I knew how to drive my wife to this establishment, where Tessa cheerfully applied knowledge, encouragement, and oil as she tensioned, adjusted, re-threaded, and re-assembled Rebecca's formerly hobbled Brother machine back to life. Meanwhile, I prowled the store to gawk at the vast inventory of sewing machines; apparently you can go "basic" for around a hundred dollars or you can "dream" for the price of a good used pickup truck. Many, many choices in between those price points are on display. Like any pursuit in the fashion arts, your passions can apparently run as deep as your wallet allows... In the adjacent room, they appear to have a classroom/project center. People were busily intent on their respective pieces, unfazed by my self-guided tour. By the time I returned to Tessa's desk, she was waving off any charges for the "minor" adjustments. I bought my first sewing machine at this shop a few years ago. In that visit, I was shopping for a machine and they were very attentive and friendly and gave promises of free lessons on how to use the machine. It's nice when local businesses earn your business. I figured out how to use the machine on my own and eventually, my family bought me a very nice embroidery machine (somewhere else) and a $250 gift certificate to Northwest Sewing Center. I was excited to revisit the shop. Only, on my first return, when I mentioned that I was just looking for accessories and notions for a machine that was bought somewhere else, I immediately felt dismissed. An older woman who worked there was clearly annoyed with my presence and didn't want to be bothered to help me. An older gentleman was unenthusiastic about it, but did end up helping me that time. I've been back to the shop 3 - 4 times since trying to use up that certificate and at every one of those visits, I've felt very much like a nuisance as soon as they realized I wasn't shopping for one of their big ticket items. It's been a challenge to get myself in there because I leave feeling upset that my family gave them so much money and they're so miserable about accepting my business. That, and they still use paper certificates with scribble on the back. Forgetting that certificate at home has had me re-route to other stores in the past. Of course, after about 2 years, with only about $30 - $40 left on the certificate I finally lost the darn thing. Wouldn't you know, even though I've watched her pull up my name and certificate information in the computer every time, they say that they can't help me if I don't have the physical certificate in hand. Ugh. So, you win Northwest Sewing Center. You got the last $30 - $40 of my gift certificate without having to give me a thing in return. I can guarantee you'll never get another dime out of me. Really, I win, because I don't ever have to be tasked with returning to your unpleasant little shop. **UPDATE** Just hours after I posted this review, Tessa called me from Northwest Sewing Center to follow up. She was very polite and apologetic and seemed very interested in rectifying the situation. Perhaps if she had been in the shop on one of my visits, I never would have had such a bad impression of them. Hopefully, she can help turn them around. The prices here are the best I've found and I searched everywhere Brother in and around Austin. The staff, especially Mary, are super helpful and we bought my Brother sewing and embroidery machine here 12/2012. Initially I thought I wanted a Baby Lock and went to Sew Much More. Wow what an experience. The store is bright and clean but so cluttered you can barely walk around but that was not the worst part; I wanted to look at a lower end combo machine and they insisted on showing me the next one or two up from the lower end machine I was interested in. Of course that was the machine I wanted but didn't want to pay the price. It's interesting since I would have happily bought the other machine after a demonstration but they did a great job of killing a sale. When someone shows up for a ~850.00 machine, don't show them a 2000.00 machine then act surprised when they walk out empty handed. Anyway, searched around for other Baby Lock and was increasingly disgruntled with all the restrictions on those dealers and how no one but the original dealer will service the machine, blah blah blah ... then found out that Baby Lock made Brother and there was an identical Brother machine with Disney designs for more than I originally wanted to pay but less than Baby Lock! Cha-Ching!! This is when I called everywhere and found NW Sewing had the best prices in town and they were the most friendly of everyone I called. They gave a quote over the phone, held the machine for me and gave a discount for cash. I've been very happy with my machine and with the staff at NW Sewing. This is a great mom and pop shop with a wide variety of machines for every budget. No one here tries to continually up-sell me, they just ask what I need and do their best to help with whatever I ask about. I really like the staff and the store. read more

Once again, they had what I needed! I asked on Freecycle if anyone had the special cams for a Singer 328K that I'd bought at the Settlement Home Garage Sale. A very nice lady did have the cams and accessories I was looking for and threw in her Grandma's busted machine, just in case I could get it working. I finally figured out that the timing was off, but it wasn't until I opened the case and found the shredded gear that I saw why. It went into the closet until my sister-in-law came for a visit. She was looking for a machine and I said if she'd buy the parts, I'd get it working again. The gear cost about $2 more than price+shipping on eBay, but it's great to be able to hold the parts up next to one another to assure a perfect match, also there's no wait...not to mention the likelihood of find other things you need. My SIL is happily sewing away and another vintage machine is saved from oblivion. read more

So far, I've only had one experience with this wonderful sewing center which has so far survived the big business commercialization that appears to be taking over all of Austin in the past several years. I can recommend this place highly. They are immediately available by phone and in person. I'd had all intentions of shelling out a bunch of money on a repair of functional vintage machine, knowing that was what it usually takes. Instead, my daughter received invaluable teaching about how to more properly thread the machine and several other pieces of advice from Tessa, a lovely staff member, so that the machine would run far smoother than it had. I did not receive any hard pressure to buy a new machine, classes or anything else. She was patient and compassionate and explained things well instead of talking down to my teenage daughter or even directing the conversation towards me, her mother. I'd made it a bit clear at the start that I knew nothing about working a sewing machine and that this was my daughter's machine. And in return for at least 15 minutes of teaching and assistance, she asked for nothing in return. Thank you Tessa and this shop for providing wonderful customer satisfaction, and I will continue to use and promote local Austin businesses that rock like you folks do! read more

Went around to several different stores looking for a specific embroidery machine. When I went in to the store I was a little surprised by how little it was and packed with machines. As soon as I walked in Mary offered to help me I told her what I was looking for and she took me to the machine she showed me how to use it even doing a full embroidery cycle with the machine. I had brought my two kids with me and one of them was getting bored and upset she brought him some crayons and a coloring book which I really really appreciated! I left the store really excited about my machine which I got for a great price. When I got home and opened it up I noticed there was a hoop missing that I was told would be in there, I called the shop and was told the hoop did not come with the machine I bought but they would give me one free of charge which is great but I'm just dreading the 45 minute drive back there. Overall good service and I would definitely go back there if I needed to. read more

I got an old Singer FashionMate from here nearly ten years ago, and thought I'd broken it. When I brought it in TWENTY MINUTES BEFORE CLOSE, I was expecting to have to drop it off for a couple of days. Instead, the younger guy with the beard asked me to pop off the cover--even when I said "I know it's really late..."--and walked me through how to thread it right. When I said how dumb I felt, he was just like "Whatever--you're human. Nobody knows everything," and that was that. I really appreciate these folks. I have taken many sewing machines here over the years, from vintage to new and always had good results. Back when I used to only sew with vintage machines, they helped me figure out how to tweak my machine for optimal results when the old manual wouldn't give me enough information. They really know how all these old machines work and will give you an honest assessment if they think it's not worth tuning up or fixing. They have a pretty quick turnaround (faster than a week, which is how long it takes at the big chain places---and same price) and good service. I love this place, I bought my first sewing machine here in 2004 and it was a low end beginner model that the saleslady spent nearly an hour sitting next to me showing me every feature of the machine and that was before I committed to purchasing it! Went in the other day near closing, the sweet saleslady understood immediately what I meant when I said "the new snap on feet don't work on my machine" and helped me find the correct adapter and some great new feet! I'm in the market for a machine and told her so, also told her that I wasn't buying today but that didnt deter her from going over some options with me and letting me sew on the different models, no sales pressure of any kind! This is just a little jewel hiding in a strip center. Not only are they so very helpful, they are not pretentious like some other sewing machine shops - although they too have the super expensive amazing machines, they totally honored my little Brother machine without making me feel like I had some little left-over. And today, they popped out my bobbin, found the issue in a couple of minutes and sent me happily on my way without charging me. I broke a bobbin case (I have no idea how!) mid-project and came here because they're the only shop in town that services Singers. (Isn't it awesome that Austin has a selection of sewing shops, not just one, or just a big box Joann-type store?) The guy did not make fun of me for thinking bent straight pins were some sort of spring or pin for the bobbin case, and he fixed it right up and charged me only a pittance for a missing screw. (A replacement part online would have been around $20.) They seem to be into embroidery and quilting and really fancy machines here; I'm clearly not their target customer. But I like that they're a family shop that treated me fairly. read more

By far the best costumer service I have EVER experienced. I bought my first nice sewing machine from Northwest Sewing Center. They helped me pick out the right one that was perfect for me. However, their costumer service didn't stop there. Over a year later I went back to buy an extension table for my machine. After talking to them, I came to find out my machine should have come with one. Without asking they just ordered me one. No questions asked and over a year later they made it right. This is my first yelp review. Like another yelper, I felt like money was more important to this business than the customer. My first experience with Northwest Sewing Center was great. I needed a power cord for my 3 year old brother machine. After shopping around online, I decided to call local shops to see if anyone had it in stock. Northwest sewing not only had what I needed but was cheaper than the prices online. When I walked into the pick up the power cord, I was greeted by an older couple who made me feel like I was family. They had cider and Christmas cookies available which I couldn't turn down because it was a cold rainy December day. Before leaving, I not only had the power cord I needed but I also was signed up for their email newsletter of classes they offer. With this experience alone, I would rate Northwest Sewing 5 stars. So when I inherited my grandmother's singer, they were the first place I called to have it tuned up and cleaned since it had pretty much sat in my mom's garage the last 15 years because she didn't sew. I dropped it off without a foot pedal because it has been misplaced and I have a cabinet with a built in knee lever. The woman that helped me double checked with the tech to make sure they had what they needed to work on my machine. I asked how much a new one would run me and the tech said around $30. I had no problem with that price because if for some reason I didn't like the knee lever (I have never used one) I could have the foot pedal to fall back on. I paid my $20 deposit for the $65 tune up and was told someone would call me in 1 week about my machine. After no one had called me when 1 week had passed, I gave them another week and called them. The gentleman got my information and said he had to call me back. Three hours later I missed their call and was left a voicemail by a woman saying they had to order a foot pedal and to call back for the price. I called back the next morning and the same gentleman had to take my information and had to again call me back. When he called back about half an hour later he said the price of the new foot pedal would be $80 which I couldn't justify spending when I had a working knee lever built into my cabinet. He wanted me to disconnect the lever and bring it in when there is no telling what kind of condition it is in. So I decided I'd pick up my machine and pursue a fix when I had a little bit more money. When I asked about getting my deposit back the man said that they couldn't return it, but I could use it as a store credit which I didn't really want to do. When I picked up my machine, it was in the same dusty condition I left it in. I asked the woman who was helping me if I'd be getting my deposit back and she said no because the deposit goes towards the "diagnostic test." I pointed out to her that I dropped my machine off for not only a tune up but also for a cleaning and it still looks filthy and asked her what diagnostic test could they do without a foot pedal. She then tried to sell me another machine. She said that I could not get my deposit back but I could put it towards another machine. She was happy to tell me that she had a nice used singer for $150 that I could look at. I'm not sure why she thought I could afford a $130 ($150 minus my deposit) machine when I couldn't afford an $80 foot pedal. I declined the new machine by saying this machine is an heirloom. She turned on her heel and pulled out $20 from the cash register, begrudgingly handed it to me and said, "I'll return your deposit this time but next time I won't." Minus 5 stars for the terrible customer service and plus 2 stars for returning my deposit. read more

I dropped my serger off there for repairs and while dropping it off, I tried to strike up a conversation with the older guy behind the desk. I love older sewing machines and was asking him about the treadle in the lobby. He was very "yeah ok whatever" until I mentioned I'd like to get one someday. He immediately perked up and mentioned he had one to sell. When I said I currently didn't have the room for one, he went back to his brush-off attitude. It took them about a week, maybe a little less, to fix my machine, so they were pretty fast about it. I kept having to put off coming to pick it up and they were very understanding about it; I finally picked it up today (which is a month to the day after it was dropped off). However, when I went in to go pick it up, I continued to feel like I was being brushed off or inconveniencing them - an employee bumped into my serger case with her rolling chair and didn't apologize or even acknowledge that she'd done so, for example. They charged me $4 for a pack of needles with the serger, without asking if I wanted them (I didn't need new needles, I have several packs). Also, when I asked about picking up some leather needles, I felt I was being treated like an idiot because I'm a younger customer. I understand a pink haired 20 year old isn't their average customer, but come ON! He handed me a pack of size 14 leather needles and when I explained that I was sewing thick cowhide type leather, and having trouble with a size 18 needle, he shrugged and said he thought it would help, worst case scenario was that I'd break a needle. He then says "Maybe your machine just can't handle the leather.". I told him it was a tough old Viking Husqvarna that's sewn through belts before with no problem, so I didn't think that was it; he acted as if I hadn't said anything and said "I can tell you this, that machine could handle it!" and points at a $900 machine. Yeah, thanks. That really helps. Side note: when I got home, I tried the new needles on the leather and they worked. I'm still not happy with the way I was treated, though, so I probably won't be back. I'm not sure if they've changed management or something, but I got the distinct impression that money was valued over customers there, and I didn't feel very welcome as a younger person. I found the sewing center last year when I was in desperate need of a new machine. This isn't a huge "JoAnn's" type of business, it's your friendly neighborhood sewing machine shop. It's a family owned and operated shop and they really know how to keep a customer! When I bought my machine they told me that could come back anytime for a "lesson" on my new machine. I knew I wouldn't need it, I'd figure it out on my own. Well, figuring it out on my own turned into more of a "doing everything wrong on my own" situation. I went back today to ask for some assistance with my free motion foot and Pat was SO helpful and sweet. Our chit-chat unearthed some really funny things that I didn't even know I needed help with. They've been in business for 55 years and also offer classes and machine maintenance. They sell notions, all sorts of sewing machine accessories and give the best customer service. They could use some more room for what they have, they've got a tiny location. If you want to be treated like a neighbor and not a number, check this place out. read more
