These people are amazing. I had a four piece living room set that has been handed down through the family. It looked like it had been mauled by coyotes by the time I decided to break down and have it reupholstered. Paulette worked with me for months while I worried over fabric choices. WOW WOW WOW!!! We have just recently moved to Austin and are fortunate to live just a block from Austin Upholstery Studio! We have a rocking chair that was probably dated to Early 1900's. 5 generations of babies have been rocked in this needle-pointed, small, Victorian rocker. It was my roommates' great grandmother's chair. For years the we thought the springs in the bottom were broken and then realized that the webbing and the dust cloth had just broken. I stepped into AUS and Paulette was so very kind, and authentically wanted to help. After sending pictures of the chair and repair needed, at her request I simply brought i it. Mike and Paulette both looked at it and told me all the intricate things that had been damaged and neglected over the years! Mike then took time to very carefully explain everything that would need to be done to fix the chair and the process. He also gave me a "head's up" on any possible trouble they might have in bringing the "little girl" back into shape. The more he talked to me I could envision a lists...with prices...adding up and up and up. There was soooo much more that needed to be repaired that I could NOT have done myself. Taking a deep breath...I asked the two dreaded word: " How much?' When he quoted the price I fell out! It was lower and so cost effective and fantastic that I couldn't believe my ears. I even had him repeat it. I actually started laughing. Then the second set of dreaded words: "How long?" We had had the chair for over 15-20 years..needing repair...but I was just curious. In less than 10 days the chair is repaired and gorgeous! There were NO surprise charges...they truly exceeded all expectations and I was thrilled to pick our chair up! Now, our new granddaughter will begin the 6th generation of children rocked in Granny Kate's chair. Mike , Paulette, and others there have a healing touch in resurrecting our treasures. I cannot say thank you enough to them. From the initial contact through finished work it was all a delight and a wonderful experience. These folks are experts...in every way! Great location in So Congress. Got 4 chairs reupholstered here that were in very rough shape (7 years in a Texas attic will do that). Apart from the wood backbone, they basically had to be redone. Dropped some good money (which I'm sure was a reasonable figure for the work done) but the chairs came out so beautiful. My parents (who were storing them for me in that attic) said they looked way better than they ever thought they could. Got to provide the fabric (which was JUST enough--they managed to make it work), pick out the tacks, decide whether I wanted piping or no. They even offered to add in a quick wood refinishing at the end which I opted to do and it made the wood look like new. Beautiful work; very happy with it and well worth the money I spent. read more

I had been wanting to take an upholstery class for a long time, but either I got too busy or the class was full already via ACC, so one day I just stopped in and asked if there was a waiting list. Sure enough, I got in! I was so excited because I had a chair that was in desperate need of sprucing up, but I really wanted to learn how to do it myself. Mike and Paulette were the solution to ths problem! I learned and laughed every day I was there. They were equally concerned with safety and educating. Each day I learned a new stage with my own piece, but they also had you pause and watch what was happening with another piece if it was new information. My chair was fairly simple, but others were using techniques not necessary for my piece. By watching what was happening with their pieces, I learned even more. I am definitely going to take this class again with a more complicated piece. I think my first piece was a good one for my first attempt at upholstery, but now I feel like I could learn more complicated techniques. Since my chair was fairly easy, I finished early. Paulette suggested using the remaining time to make pillows. Because of her help, I learned how to serge the edges to prevent fraying and then sew pillows together! I have never attempted to sew anything before in my life, so this was a huge accomplishment for me. Paulette was very patient and took the time to demonstrate how to do it and answer my 500+ questions. When I screwed it up (inevitable), she was very kind and showed me how to fix it and what I did wrong. Honestly I do not know how you could dislike Mike and Paulette's class. They are very fun, but excellent instructors as well. The class is small, so you can get to know your fellow students and receive personal attention from the instructors. At lunch we would go next door to the food trailer for amazing tacos, then sit together and eat lunch. It was family-style learning! I will definitely sign up for another class with a more complicated piece for my second attempt. It is very important that you not be too ambitious with your first piece because you might not be able to finish it in time. If you have a good beginner piece and a positive attitude, you will get so much out of this class! read more

The classes have a fun atmosphere-everyone is so friendly. A couple of tips-if possible take your piece home after the first class to finish stripping so that you can use your class time to full advantage. I really wanted to give this place a chance, many people I respect love this place so I took on good faith that my project would be handled well in a reasonable amount of time. I had a cracked leg in an already redesigned chair. Because I had invested so much money in fabric and redesign on this chair from a designer I didn't want to just write this piece of furniture off. As a matter of fact my designer recommended this shop. I dropped this chair off in Oct of 2017, I was told the repair could be done by one of their guys. They were clear about the fact that it was a busy time and it might take several week or up to a month. I absolutely understood this. I won't bore you with the details of this drama. I checked back on 3 different occasions giving them 4 to 6 weeks in between each visit. I was met with a dry attitude, non apologetic, and excuses as to why my project wasn't important. (classes just started, we are doing a deep cleaning of the building, people are out sick etc.) I finally just picked up my chair IN PIECES. They had time to tear it apart and leave it sitting on a shelf. I now have to find someone willing to do the repair. It is the end of February 2018. They kept my chair for over 4 months, never called and didn't bother to do anything to it but tear it apart and leave it sitting around. They clearly took in new projects and put them in front of mine over and over again. If you didn't want the project just tell me that. I could have had my chair fixed elsewhere and had it home months ago. Bad reviews are tough to write, but seriously... this situation was really terrible. read more

Paulette and Lauren were super easy to work with on a rather bizarre project for our HOA: re-seaming our rather dilapidated tennis court net. They worked diligently around our very tight schedule, and made the net good as new for a lot less than buying a new one. I needed two cushions custom made for a recliner/lift chair that was uncomfortable. I, like others who have left less than stellar reviews, had trouble with communication on several different occasions. Paulette originally told me $50-$60. Then when I went in to pick out the materials and go over the size details, the price went up to $200.00+. After I reminded her of her original approximate price, she came down to $100.00. Very iffy business! The cushions were promised -- never received a call. Paulette was supposed to call me on three, or perhaps more, different occasions...she never called. I had to call her. I showed up and was able to pick up one of the cushions. While I was waiting for the second cushion to be finished, it turned out that the material had been cut wrong and it was necessary for me to return one more time. When I picked up the second cushion, it had a strip of material added to it -- not very professional. read more

I can't begin to tell you how wonderful Mike and Paulette are! I have learned so much valuable information about upholstery work from the two of them. Not only are they both great instructors they are also great people. I traveled back and forth from Sugar Land (Houston area) to take part in their classes and I am so very glad that I did. After looking high and low for classes to take here in the Houston area, I came across someone that told me Mike and Paulette had opened a shop and were offering classes. Mike and Paulette both taught upholstery at Austin Community College for many years. I ended up taking part in three different sessions and plan to take another one soon. If you want to learn upholstery from two of the best instructors out there, then sign up for this class. If you are a beginner or have a little experience under your belt, this is the class for you. They are both informative, helpful, patient and kind. This class is also great to take if you are just looking for something fun, interesting and unique to do. Not only will you have a great time, you will also have a great chair when you finish the session. On top of that, I can assure you there will be lots of laughter shared. After taking part in three sessions I grew close to Mike and Paulette and am happy to say they are now of my most favorite friends from Austin, Texas! YAY! They're back! Mike and Paulette are incredible instructors - I took two classes from them before ACC decided the impossible to get in to classes weren't worth their (ACC's) space. I found that very confusing, but now I don't care since I'm back to learning this craft from the people who were the heart and soul of the program. The studio space is amazing - clean, organized and well stocked! I've started my class with them and am looking forward to perfecting (hopefully!) my skills. And having a ton of fun along the way! Finally, after seven years of daily wear, my leather seat cushions from Four Hands needed to be repaired. I was referred to this place with instructions that they were the best...and I tend to agree. Paulette matched my leather perfectly and got it ordered. I gave half up front for her to order the supplies. Then after two weeks (a little longer than I was initially promised), I picked up my lovely couch cushion and it was repaired superbly. I won't go any other place for my furniture repairs. read more

Hate to leave such a negative review but I feel it is important to warn other people when I have a really negative experience.I base my decisions on who to do business with partially based on these reviews. One of the owners, Mike seemed very professional and I was looking forward to have him reupholster my 150 year old rocker. I dropped the rocker off, along with a leather hide I purchased just for this project. The woman who does the quotes Paulette ( I understand she is also an owner) promised me she would have a price for me by the end of the week. I waited a week and a half before checking back with her. She said she had been busy with family issues and had not had time to "study" my chair but she would make it a priority and have it done by the end off that week ( week 2 ). I waited till Saturday of that week before calling again, Paulette said she was busy teaching a class but PROMISED me that she would have a quote by end-of- business that day...... no call ever came. I gave her an additional entire week, knowing she was having family issues. When I called Saturday (another week out), you could hear the irritation in her voice as she informed me she was teaching a class and just had not had time to complete the quote. When I asked her if I should just pick up my chair and find another company, the sarcasm in her voice was evident and she said " yes I think that would be a good idea." She was never rude or ugly but damn... why would the owner of a business treat a customer with such disregard? I have several more projects coming up but I definitely wont be going back there. We picked up the rocker today and found another shop who gave me a fair price on the spot. Work will begin soon and the estimated time for completion is 4-6 weeks. I have spent nearly that much just waiting for Paulette to "study" my chair. read more

I absolutely love the Austin Upholstery Studio!!! I went there looking for a place to learn the basics of upholstery and found so much more. Paulette and Miguel are awesome teachers with so much knowledge and experience in both the upholstery trade and in teaching and they obviously applied that experience when designing their studio. It is safe, ergonomic, organized, clean, fun, relaxing, encouraging, (even therapeutic!) and they are both SOOOO patient that even the most inexperienced students feel comfortable and excited to learn. Both Miguel and Paulette take care to provide as many learning opportunities as possible during the class. For example, if a student or one of their workers is performing a step or using a technique that everyone could benefit from, they call the entire class over and explain what is being done and allow everyone to watch and ask questions, take pictures, etc. So you don't just learn from your own project, you learn from everyone else's as well! My sister and I went together to our first class. We had experienced some tragedy and rough times in the first part of the year and just wanted to do something fun and different. We had a blast, learned a ton and left with some refreshed furniture and attitudes! Thanks so much!!! read more
