Definitely focused on cross stitch. But if you do hand embroidery, they have every single DMC thread. Definitely still useful to go. Also less expensive than Michael's for that thread, before sale. 1.25 a skein. read more

What a lovely shop! I haven't done needlepoint in years, but my daughter enticed me to see if there might be a canvas I would like. I love their selections and the quality of artwork. They have several pieces already in kit form, saving time for those of us who aren't great at making choices. I found a fun piece, which was perfect for a "beginner" and the staff member set up my frame, secured the piece to it and provided a needle. Very nice people who provide advice, help customers learn a new stitch and provide services for finishing. It's a little pricy, but it's been decades since I bought supplies - this might just be the cost of supplies these days. Hopefully when I complete this piece, I will have the confidence for a more complicated piece. read more

Lovely , large and spacious needlepoint shop. Upon entering you can see several trunk shows and discounted canvases. Additional canvases on the walls and in a large flip stand by category. Lovely store with awesome selection of everything in a needlepointer's heaven. The staff were welcoming and friendly. Don't agree with a comment made that the hand painted canvases are overpriced and criticism that tapestry wool isn't available.....indicates to me that someone hasn't shopped in a really good store for a very long time. Canvases in the best stores in California are comparable in price and use of Paternayan wool is very outdated (though still available online). The store was lovely...nice layout and dynamite classroom. I was looking for hand dyed ribbon and was delighted to find a nice selection for flowers in three widths. Was just visiting Austin for the Holiday--the trip to this marvelous store was a nice highlight. read more

Today, I made what is likely my last trip to The Needle Works, but I'm sure that won't bother anyone there. I went in for a project I want to start and I didn't call the canvas by the right name, which seemed to almost immediately offend the woman who apparently owns the store. I have been in a few times because they have beautiful hand-painted threads and a good selection. I don't have time to keep up with the latest trends, I just put a needle through fabric for fun. But no matter my skill level or what I call things, I don't deserve to be treated like I was today by the shop-owner and her white-haired friend (who I'm not sure actually worked there). The lady who cut fabric for me was really nice. But while I looked around after and when I went to the register to check out, I could hear the shop owner and her friend discussing me. I echo the people below who said they were treated like thieves. I bought $70 worth of fabric, frames and needles and I STILL got treated poorly and talked about. Well, that won't be happening again. I prefer to shop local, but for today's treatment (not the first time), I'll go elsewhere. Buyer beware. read more

I needed some additional persian wool to complete a needlepoint project I'm working on. After going to many stores in town and finding none of them carried needlepoint wool, I stumbled across this place. Let me say, I was floored. They have so many types of needlepoint yarns it's amazing. Every color, every gauge, every material. The staff was great, I walked in with my work and they helped me choose the colors and estimate how much I would need to complete my project. In addition, the price was great, I walked out with enough wool to complete my project (less than 1/3 complete) for about $8. They also have an amazing and comprehensive array of painted canvases by individual artists. While many of the canvases to appear to be rather "grandma-y" (flowers, cats, etc.), they have a great selection of materials to design your own sweet needlepoint designs. They are little tucked away in this shopping center, so they may be a tad hard to find. read more

After wanting to pick up some new handcraft projects, I went here to visit. Unfortunately, some of my canvases and yarns had disappeared after several moves, but the selection here is lovely. I found several canvases that were appealing. Once I knew the canvas size, I was shown the different companies that "fit" that piece in order to best select thread/yarns. I have been back several times and always learn something new/helpful. They have a large rack of sale canvases with a good discount, which is very nice. Also, a piece I had wanted was no longer on the "trunk sale" wall due to a change they had not been aware of when I had been there previously, but I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED when I got a call later that they were able to secure the piece for me. There was a nice selection of books/workbooks on my latest visit. The quality of products was exceptional, the ladies were more than helpful and their attention to detail was everything someone could hope for. I left the store with a project ready to work on with everything I needed and excited that I found a spot where I could learn more about a craft I enjoyed. read more

I love just browsing this place. I am a historical recreationist so I love doing embroidery from 1600 and before and wish they would start carrying some more historically accurate stuff, ie real gold threads, flat silks, reeled silks, linen embroidery fabric in more sizes etc. Otherwise their selection is great but I would purchase much more if they carried these types of thing, and know my local group of recreationists would as well. read more

This place is a heaven sent for anyone looking to find specialty threads for needlepoint! The shop is easy enough to find and has ample parking. Upon entering you will find the store neatly curated and immaculate. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I thought I knew enough about embroidery- I suppose not! The selection of colors, size and style of thread is mind boggling. You will find everything you need and more :) I always come out with a handful more than I needed. My biggest complaint however is that prices are not clearly listed on most items, so unless you know ahead of time that you'll be dropping good money on supplies or have been there enough to know how much things cost you'll most likely have to ask the staff. I say this not to imply the shop is expensive or overpriced but just a forewarning not to get carried away with all the pretty baubles ;) Please keep supporting local shops in these trying times! read more

This is primarily a needlepoint shop, and I don't do needlepoint, I embroider. Still the selection of floss, threads, and needlepoint yarns is AMAZING. If you do any kind of stitching and want a step up from cotton dmc, this is the place to go in Austin. The only reason I don't go more often is because of the staff. They always treat me like I'm one of those notorious international thread thieves. Usually all I ever have on me is my wallet, but I guess they expect me to stuff my bra with spools. So one star off for following me around, staring at me from a distance, and asking the same questions over and over. read more

This store was amazing! The lady who helped me was incredibly friendly and was happy to show me around the store and answer all of my questions...and I had many. They were missing one of the threads i needed, but I found a suitable alternative from their incredible selection. I am a cross-stitcher, and the floss, fabric and needles i picked up were of the highest quality (DMC, Zweigart, Bohin). When I opened my fabric today to iron it, I found that the edges were secured with a serger to prevent them from fraying...which is such a classy touch! Perfectly lovely... OK... first off... I'm a guy... so I expected to be ..."looked at as an oddity," BUT the ladies in the shop were all perfectly lovely and I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't ask me if I was lost! They answered all my questions without condescension and were very cheerful. I grew-up going in to this type of shop ... Mom is a knitter... and she has done needlepoint as well, but the array of fiber in this store is MIND-BOGGLING ... I went in 'cause I needed some "over dyed" threads for some hair of an angel I'm stitching... and wow what a selection! I have a feeling I will be back very soon 'cause the effect was really nice (which means the other angels are gonna need similar "hair"). I checked out some of the canvases, but as I'm a beginner and have a bunch of canvases from my Mom I will probably not need to buy any of these any time to soon... All in all a shop I will be returning to soon! read more

I agree with some of the comments. The store is really nice with a large variety of yarns. I didn't find the staff very friendly, which is surprising since you would think they would want to attract as much business as possible. I agree, the canvasses can be purchased online at a much more reasonable price. I get the feeling they cater to those who come in regularly and take classes. read more

I love this needlepoint shop! They have the greatest selection of canvases, threads, and "embellishments". Colleen and her staff are so friendly and helpful. I don't live in Texas so they send threads, canvases, stitch guides, etc. to me! My "great desire" is to take a class at this top notch shop! read more
