Salesperson refused to verify price for us.. they did nothing to ensure our satisfaction. We should've just returned all and re-rung to satisfy our concern. Instead we were told to leave the store. Staff was exceptionally helpful, spending a lot of time with me to answer all my questions about a minor purchase. Sale prices aren't posted. In one area there's a sign that says "25% off", but they didn't update the actual prices, so you have to calculate yourself. I never understand why anyone works in retail who doesn't think customer service is necessary. I just needed a photo slightly cut. I was buying a frame and a mat, but the framer told me I would need to leave it with him to be cut and that it would take 4 to 6 weeks. As an artist from California who recently moved to Texas, I needed to find an art store for my current and future projects. Well, I've gone to Jerrys' about 4 times and spend a few hundred dollars every time I visited. The merchandise is good and most of the employees are helpful. However, the framing guy has been unhelpful and leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. I still would visit...but will not get anything framed there because his condescending and unprofessional demeanor. I highly recommend using Jerry's for all of your framing needs. The staff and manager Dion are extremely knowledgable, helpful and detail oriented. This is the best place I've found in Austin for fine arts supplies. It's right by ACC's Highland campus off I-35, so if you're an art student there, you can't beat the convenience. If you live across town like I do, you will grumble at the drive, but you'll still go, because they have so much stuff. Everything is well organized, and the artist employees are friendly and knowledgeable and will help you find whatever you're looking for. I spend way too long wandering down every single aisle, out of choice, because I want to see everything they have. You will be tempted to buy more than you need, because they have so much great quality stuff and as artists know, there's a seductive vibe to quality art supplies. So it helps to bring a list. They don't offer student discounts, but they do have sales, usually around the time each semester starts, and if you ask, you can get on their VIP discount list. You can also sign up online to get updates on their warehouse sales, and believe me, there's a sale just online just about every week. The online products come from a warehouse in another state, and prices and sales are different from what is offered here in-store, FYI. I've ordered ahead online to save some bucks, but always end up heading over to the store and finding a great selection of supplies that I need right now, or that are too large or awkward to ship. In the Texas heat that seems to last for half the year, that's just about everything. So go see Jerry. read more

I was still prepared to splurge (because, as an art establishment... I felt I could truly trust them with my artwork). But, after a line of condescending remarks made by the bearded dude behind the counter, followed by a ridiculous question (asking me if I wanted to put glass on my oil painting - WHAT??) I decided to take my seven piece project elsewhere. For the outrageous prices they charge (even at half off) I expected them to know what they're doing. But, I was obviously wrong and am truly shocked. Still... I guess the loss was more theirs than mine. ~ Great for art supplies... but not for framing art (how disappointing). read more

They did it again. Today Joshua and Jenny helped me tremendously. I needed help with a metallic finish. Joshua was extremely informative and friendly. He went above and beyond to tell me different techniques I could play around with to achieve my desired result. Then, he helped me with spray paints. Not only did he help me look for exactly what I needed but after that he took me over to Jenny who has worked more with spray paints just so she could give me advice on different techniques I could use for my textured project. Being a full time artist is hard enough. Not to mention when you are taking on new projects you put a lot of work into trying to create your vision. I am so thankful that I have a place to get supplies, but also get help and knowledge from people who truly care about art and artists (regardless of the level you are at!) They never make you feel like you are interrupting them or wasting their time. Jerry's Artarama is the only well supplied art store in Austin (call me out if I'm wrong, I've just never found anything comparable) so it automatically gets give stars in my book. Jerry's is staffed with artists who are more than happy to assist you when you need advice or are searching for a specific item. Over the last few years I've purchased there many tools, paint, pens, frames (custom and not), pencils, papers and more. In fact I avoid going to Jerry's too often because I know that in spite of their competitive prices, my paycheck might end up getting swallowed up in a matter of minutes. Fellow artists surely will understand the compulsion I'm talking about here. It's that inner voice that tells you that, yes, you do need 3 different shades of red markers because they are totally used for different purposes, and yes, you do need another pretty notebook even if you already have a bunch at home, and of course you should buy this canvas because it's not like you already have 5 or 6 of them waiting for you in your studio, am I right? I had my masters diploma custom framed here and it cost about $220. The diploma is 8.5 x 11 and I had it double matted. Three of the four corners of the large mat are over cut, where you can see the cut marks on the front of the mat. The interior mat is gold and the over cut marks are extremely obvious on all four corners. I called the store and was told that this is how their machine works and all of the mats are cut this way and it is how it is supposed to be (this seems disingenuous since only three of the large mat corners even have them at all). Looking online, I saw that this is called an "over cut" and it is not how the matting is supposed to turn out. "Proper blade depth is the key to eliminating many of the common flaws seen in mat cutting.  Unbeknownst to most novice framers, mat board varies in thickness.  Even within a so-called line of "standard thickness" mat board, minor variations in thickness are common due to the different thickness of the face papers.  These different thicknesses are largely responsible for the most bedeviling issue in mat cutting, a seeming inability to stop precisely and consistently in the corners, leading to over cuts and under cuts.     All mat cutting blades penetrate the mat at an oblique angle, meaning that they penetrate the back of the mat at a point further back than they emerge from the face.  If the mat board is thicker, it takes the blade longer to emerge, leading to under cuts.  If the mat board is thinner, the blade emerges earlier, leading to over cuts.   On most mat cutters, it is possible to set the blade depth precisely so the blade emerges precisely at the corner each time." Awesome art store. Actually I would have to say it's more than an art store. It's where your dreams can become real! We were headed back to Dallas and decided to stop by for a look see and could not resist buying bunch of different pens and drawing pads. We'll definitely be back for the screenprinting aisle as most of the chain art stores no longer carry that stuff. Jerry's is the only place I go to in Austin to buy my art supplies! I do oil, watercolor, and acrylic painting as a hobby and I never fail to find what I need here. Not only are all the staff super knowledgable and willing to lend a hand, they have special events going on every weekend, as well as free coffee on Monday and wine on Friday. The store is well organized so it's not hard to find what you need, and they have a good selection of materials. They also have a discount card which gets you 10% your purchase on top of their other sales which is pretty awesome. When I first started oil painting, I was able to get decent paint for about 5-6$ a pop. Even if you're just someone who wants to get in touch with their creative side, they have an awesome selection of pens and other stationary items to browse. Dion and team at the framing counter offer wonderful service. They have a good eye for what works and what doesn't work. I've had three medium to large sized pieces of artwork custom framed here (prints and drawings). It was worth the investment, because they look much sharper than an off the shelf frame . Museum glass looks great on the pieces that needed reduced glare. They are also always on schedule or finished earlier than the finish date provided at the time of purchase. There is always a special going on, so pricing is also solid. I plan to keep using Jerry's as my go to framers. read more

Never get anything framed by Jerry's Artarama in Austin! Never ever ever ever! Here's why: 1) They GLUED the mat to the art. Now, I can NEVER change the mat. 2) The frame was deep and they didn't use enough backing board to fill the space. As the paper they use is very thin, it was easy to stick my thumb through it, since the backing did not fill the space between it and the paper. I spent a lot of money for "Museum Glass". Why oh why? With the job that they did, I should have just used Saran Wrap. No joke: I could have done a better job myself. read more
