This is my FAVORITE stationary store in Austin. I happened to wander in after a central market trip. I am in love with the journal selection. I bought a Bruno Visconti journal and fell in love, came back and bought some more. Returned and they were sold out, the employee was so helpful and let me know I could put in a request for their buyer to order more. She filled out a request sheet and took my information so that they can call me when it comes in. But this is so much more than a place to buy journals. They have a huge pen selection, including some fancy ones. Their seasonal/holiday decor is always so unique and fun. They have a huge kids section and I will be popping in whenever I need a gift. AND stickers. They have a wall of a ton of stickers! They have a party section, greeting cards, gifts for adults and children, and they also make custom paper products like invitations + more. The selection is great, the prices are affordable and nothing feels overpriced, but what really sticks out here is the great staff. (I believe this is a locally owned- women owned business! "This is a hug that looks a lot like a card." Great cards like this are few and far between, but I find such treasures at the Paper Place more often than not. Reliably. I also find gorgeous paper goods for table settings made by Hester & Cook, journals by Leuchtturm that invite me to realize "writing by hand is thinking on paper." It is a joy to look at their gift wrapping paper, but this I eschew in favor of vintage silk and polyester scarves that I buy in lots online. This is a solid source of terrific picture frames, seasonal decorations, and amusements for kids, such as stickers and paper dolls. I don't believe I have ever walked out of the store empty-handed. Parking can be a bit of a challenge given the store proximity to Central Market. read more

Re: Custom Baby Shower Invitations Did you know that Paper Place is a completely different store than Paper Source? Paper Source is a national chain, while Paper Place is a local Austinite store. You can only order custom invitations online at Paper Store since covid, which is why I was referred to Paper Place. I have had a really good experience working with Tacha. I ordered 30 custom baby shower invitations for $148 plus tax with one week non-expedited lead time. I bought the pre made card stock invitations at $26 for a pack of 10 x 3 = $78. Paper Place charges $40 for the design. It's $1 per invitation to print flooding at no extra charge x 30 = $30. Sure, I probably could have saved $50 ordering online at Minted or Paper Source. But their lead time is two weeks non expedited. Plus, Tacha saved us one to two hours of design time because she took care of everything. Tacha helped me with wording like writing, "Couple's Baby Shower" instead of writing, "Co-Ed Baby Shower." She also suggested a technique called flooding at no extra charge, where the background is dark, but the lettering is white. Re: Custom Thank You Notes I'm currently working on another project with Tacha to try and use up my old watermarked resume paper and A2 envelopes. If you want to save money, you can pay them $40 for only the design and print them at home on a laser printer for free using your own stationary. If you're using a flooding technique, Tacha recommends paying for their commercial printer, so the lettering is precise and crisp. Tacha only works Saturday through Wednesday. It's 50 cents per 8 1/2 × 11 page to score. So if you can print two notecards per page, it's 50 cents to score two notecards. read more

But, is what you're buying from an online retailer going to invest back into your community?! Suzy, the owner, has been a long time Austin resident and is so supportive of other Austin local owned businesses AND she donates a lot to charitable groups. She's always helpful, as is her entire staff. They have so many beautiful things, but also lots of things that you can try out in store...like a wall of pens!! I now am addicted to these amazing flowing gel pens that I would have never found without the paper place! They do invitations to weddings, parties, etc. They have party supplies, napkins, journals, anything you'd need to set up your home office (sans the reams of paper). I love the paper place and for 14 years was a regular customer. We relocated a few hours out of Austin and were excited to visit when we were in town. I purchased an umbrella which was great for a couple weeks and this week it just fell apart. I hope I can upload photos. This thing literally came apart.. all of the inside connecting strings came off them the arm broke two days ago. It's an impossibly hideous thing I can't wait to throw away. I love having a good pen and paper store in town. I understand the difficulties of competing with online competitors but think their, in my experience, policy of not price matching, or even negotiating, limits my pen purchases. I have shopped for several over $200 pens that all online pen stores were selling for 20% to 30% less than they were and all at the same price. I would have bought from them for their being a local business at even 10% over but not at 20%-30% higher. When I asked about special ordering at a price nearer the competition, they refused. I do not see why when similar family owned businesses like Dromgoole's in Houston can match prices why they can at least be more flexible... read more

I happened to walk in on a sunny afternoon and it was PACKED - in a good way! Nothing like a sweet paper store. I'm a sucker for all things paper, pens, highlighters, cards, etc. so this was right up my alley. The staff was super friendly and the selection of items were plentiful. I highly recommend Paper Place. I stopped into the store recently with an item I needed gift wrapped, not knowing whether or not they have this service. They do not actually wrap gifts, but a great employee took the time to put the item into a lovely gift bag with tissue paper and a nice ribbon, even though I hadn't bought the item in the store. The charge was minimal. This matches with every other experience I've had with the store--friendly folks, and I walked out happy! read more

This place has a lot to offer when it comes to fun novelty gifts, like planners, kooky figurines, candles, and such. And the layout of the front of the space is alluring designed to really bring you in with their pretty collectibles. I certainly would return to purchase a gift and even purchase a sheet or two of their really beautiful wrapping paper. However the purpose of my visit was to seek out undeniably perfect blank cards for some co-workers. And though they had a few good ones, the selection wasn't as large as I was hoping for a stationary shop. I will say, however, I think this spot is definite spot for customized stationary for more serious affairs, like a wedding or special event - not silly greeting cards to brighten up a friend's day. They also had quite a selection of writing and calligraphy pens, as well as a boat load of all different paper: weight, color, size, style - you name it. Nice assortment of official-looking stationery, cards and general whatnot going on in here, and from the looks of things they tend to get lots of wedding/bar mitzvah/special occasion business. I'd imagine these guys really don't care for evites, but I digress. Staff was super helpful, even if they didn't have exactly what I was after on this given day: you'd be surprised at how hard it is to find a customizable stamp at a decent price point until you start looking. And they have them here, just not not exactly what I had in mind. Ultimately, a fun little shoppe where you can grab some paper (appropriately enough) for that special occasion. And enough interesting special occasion (and even some Monkey See-Monkey Do-Archie McPhee type gags near the register) type things to keep it all interesting. And I'll likely be back cause they're convenient. But I'd really love a more extensive catalog. And just a little more of the stamp I had in mind. read more

I rarely write reviews but I wanted to say something good about Paper Place. For years I have been giving cards to people who say, "Wow, your cards are so creative!" I always accept the compliment but my real secret is that I get these cards at Paper Place. They offer a huge stock of funny, pithy, original, creative cards for any occasion. I see them as the anti-Hallmark. I never go anywhere else for a card. And when I go in the store I am always welcomed by the friendliest, coolest, most helpful staff anywhere! I almost always chat with the very likeable and amazing Mandy who is always so helpful. One last thing...I never thought much about stationery until I started visiting the store and was reminded about what my parents had taught me about the simple elegance of handwritten notes. Let's make this clear right off the top... I'm straight. Don't fish that pond. Don't want to. Never have. Never will. I'm a "breeder" (as THOSE fish say). But I loves me some Paper Place. They have cool pens, cool gifts (frames and stuff), and they carry a wide range of those super-cool Moleskin books. Those things are so cool that I once tried to make one my sole wallet... I used the pocket for my credit card and cash and I walked around trying to be cool and writing in my Moleskin. Didn't work. But Paper Place TOTALLY works for gifts and cool pens and lots of cute girls (although most of them are there ordering paper for wedding invitations...). My advice is that you start servin' chicken wings and hang a few plasmas. THEN you'll get the menfolk to start comin' round. read more

I guess I'm so disappointed because of the rave reviews from a lot of people I know and like. I came here because I have a very difficult to wrap gift and hoped to find something for it. It's important enough to me that I actually brought the item with me. I don't know how long I was trying to find a bag to fit it before someone finally *helped* me. She was nice enough, but I pretty much took care of myself. The only thing that worked was so not the bag I wanted. I had the impression they had a good selection. (Not for gift bags) To top it all off I was sent away with the gift bag used as the bag for the tissue paper also purchased. Do you think perhaps I'd like something protective around the item I clearly expressed I had gone out of my way to find? I won't be back. Do not even think about entering this store during the after school craziness that is parents and waist-highers packing this tiny shop. The line to check out was long, and every child decided this would be a great time to yell and touch everything. Is the paper cute? Sure, I think. I didn't get close enough to anything to ever really see. There were so many damn strollers and browsers. The shop girls were a little mean and aloof and I was terrified to ask for anything, since I'd already been chided once for getting too close to some of their inventory. I went here because I needed thank you cards. I found some gorgeous letterpressed ones, with teeny tiny cherry blossoms. Cards: check! They were a little spendy, but, since my extended family basically funded our honeymoon, they can get pricey thank you cards. The 12-year-old in me loooooved the pen wall. Pink sparkly gel pens? Purple uni-ball pens ink flowing out seamlessly? Yay! Memories of heady days of back to school shopping and color-coded algebra notes came flooding back. I had a bad customer service experience here, and wouldn't recommend The Paper Place for any transactions involving invitation orders. We were short on time when we went in, so I tracked down a worker and asked for help in finding wedding invitations that would fit our general style and color requirements. The worker pulled down about two binders, and then walked away without any further guidance on what we should do if we did find something we liked. We chose a design, figured out the pricing scheme by ourselves because we couldn't find anyone to help us, and I wrote out the details of my entire order on a piece of paper due to not having been given a proper order form. (Nor did I even know of the existence of a proper order form, since we couldn't find anyone to help us.) I gave the piece of paper with all the order details plus my phone number and email address to the worker who had originally helped me, and she said she would call me back with a final cost estimate. I pretty much had only one week in Austin to plan my entire wedding, so it wasn't until three very busy days later that I realized I hadn't received a call back from The Paper Place. I called back, three days after attempting to place an order, and was met with confusion by staff. Not only did they not even know who I was, but they suggested I call back tomorrow when I might "get someone who knows something". Umm. No. To their credit, they found my order taken by the original worker and called me back within a few hours to tell me I'd need to come in again to place the final order and complete some missing elements. When I returned to the store four days after I'd hoped to order invitations and be done with it, THEY COULDN'T FIND MY ORDER. After 15 minutes of searching, it turned out it was just stuck to another piece of paper and wasn't technically lost, but by this time, we had a negative amount of confidence in this vendor to provide anything more complicated than a paper clip. What a waste of time. I had hoped to have my wedding invitations ordered during the week I was in Austin, and had blown my chance waiting for the Paper Place to get their act together. I'd buy paper by the sheet from them and anything else I could carry up to the cash register and leave with, but do not recommend them for any transaction requiring more customer service interaction than the operation of a cash register. read more

Both items made the birthday boy/girl feel quite special, and that means more than any amount of gift card or online order. I have been here a several times to buy bulk paper to make my own invitations. I came in here to price some wedding invites that I have already designed, but wanted professionally printed. I was really impressed that they gave me some inexpensive solutions, which meant I should go with a printer that is not associated with them. This scores big points with me, as they could have easily tried to upsale me on something I didn't need. Despite the fact that most of my artistic ability could fit into my little toe, there are times when I just really want to flex what little I have and make some fun invitations for a shindig I'm throwing. On those occasions, I head straight to Paper Place. Tons and tons of paper options, from pre-printed theme pages to handmade paper and everything in between. They also have actual invitation stock that you can print yourself or, if you're feeling lazy (and rich), they have an unbelievable selection of invitations you can order already-printed. If you're an obsessive shopper like me, plan to spend about a year looking through the zillions of sample books they have. It really might take you that long. Fortunately for me, I never feel that rich, so I generally opt for the print-my-own route (the choices for which are still pretty damn overwhelming). They also carry greeting cards, a huge selection of pens, ribbon, an assortment of fun and beautiful gift items, a pretty good selection of rubber stamps, some stickers, and probably quite a few other things that I can't think of right now. Fun place to browse around and dream about the possibilities. read more

Paper Place is a store that has unique and some fun gift items. It's a hard place for me though. I want to like it. I really do. Because it's totally my kind of place - I am a hard core letter writer and stationary person. I love sending cards, personal letters, getting journals and the sort. Especially anything that is non-hallmark. Paper Place, however, is like entering a sorority that you are not a part of and not only not a part of, but one that rejected you during pledge week. You will often be passed over for customer service outright for someone else despite having been there for 2x longer! You can ask specifically for help and get a look of disdain like 'ugh, you? I have to help you?' - as if you have a communicable disease. I just can't stand entering the place. And the saddest part is I really, really want to like it. I have to say I have never ordered custom invites, cards, or stationary there. But after dealing with them for several years (And some of my purchases have been well over $150 on multiple occasions) - I would go anywhere else, like anywhere. I have been forced to deal with them to find some Crane & Co. products last minute and even then buying high quality stationary gets you no where with them in terms of customer service. I am not asking for special treatment just decent, civil treatment. And, please recognize that I have some passing familiarity with the products that I am trying to find so I am not stupid and don't need to be made to feel that way. If you shop here you will likely find some cute, neat, and unique gift items in a fairly convenient location (though parking can be a real pain in the ---) but you will be more than likely treated as if you are not worthy to be breathing the same air as the girls in the store. I don't know when a competitor will open up because if they have any degree of business sense in offering customer service, I will gladly frequent them. As it is, I've already moved to making a number of my purchases online since I get ignored (or worse) in the store and it saves me a trip and the hassle. Treating customers poorly does not = better sales or long term customer loyalty. Don't know when they'll learn that. read more

Paper Place has a wonderful collection of cards, paper, pens, journals, and gifts. If I had an unlimited number of friends and lovers, I could justify buying tons of beautiful cards and elegant stationary. Unfortunately, there is far greater number of wonderful options at the Paper Place than there are people to write letters. However, if you are planning to get invitations or cards printed, I can't recommend it with the same enthusiasm. Though I've only placed two orders, neither were to my satisfaction (and I'm not all that picky). One order of cards had a slight bent corner on half the cards, but I had to send them out immediately for a deadline, so I couldn't ask them to replace the order. The other order was ready over a week late. All in all, I survived and the world kept turning, but I was less than impressed. The staff is hit or miss. I've had several employees offer lots of help and insight, while others were less than helpful or pleasant. I guess it really depends on the day. Overall, I recommend the Paper Place only if you are not planning to place a special order. If you are simply looking for a place to buy cards or stationary, you can't go wrong with this store. read more

Paper Place is an indecisive person's nightmare. Live in living color. Many of them (colors, that is) in every possible stationary shape or form. Your best strategy for such a shop is to bring a friend -- an outspoken, opinionated friend. Don't depend on yourself in such a situation. Back-up is necessary. I liked that I was able to go in, see tons of creative ideas and eventually formulate what I would love to see in the Bridal Shower invitations I was creating. The prices are moderate, but if you want to put a little grunt-work in and are scrapbooking-inclined, you'll fall right into place with the D.I.Y. sections. For those with decidedly less time on their hands, they have a wide assortment of cute, elegant and trendy pre-made cards. Cards for your Crawfish Boil? Check. Cards in a Circular shape? Check. Cards that can match every color in the rainbow? Check. The staff were more than ready to help me out -- I didn't have big decisions to be made by them (hence the wing-woman idea), but I'm betting that I'd get an honest opinion out of atleast one of the 5 people that asked to help me. I'm just going to put it out there that if you are coming to the Paper Place, don't expect to walk away with anything costing less than $1.50 per card ($15.00/10) .
