I've been coming for a few years now and can't rave enough about their candle scents and store layout. The aromas that touch your nose will tingle your senses and have you ready to find that signature scent for whichever room you're looking to scent. From linen sprays to candles and oils, Slow North has you covered. Don't let the pricing be a deterrant as they are definitely well worth the investment. The burning time on their candles is really good and more of a slow burn. Take an opportunity to do a candle making class or participate in their other workshops! read more

We had a great experience for our first time candle making! It was very fun getting to smell all the different scents, learn about the positives of choosing a more safer route than store bought candles that have many chemicals inside. Our instructor was very educated about the entire process and took her time helping us level out the scents within our candle making it an overall fun and enjoyable experience. First let me say Jane and Laura AMAZING ladies. They were so personable. I am SO glad this is where I picked for us to go. You learn so much about candles, wax, oils etc. Jane was so thorough in explaining each oil their uses properties how the oil is processed from the different flower, fruit etc etc. you literally have no doubts. I was truly mind blown. I would like to say more advertisement would really help. I found this place on accident (literally on accident). This gem should definitely be advertised. Get more people in so they can partake in the goods and services. If they don't know you are there they can't come to you. You don't know till you know, and now that I know I have a better understanding and appreciation for the art of candle making (when the correct products are used). When you are making your candle they definitely don't skimp on the oils leaving you with a very fragrant product to be proud of. You even can decorate your own label to make it more your own. Upon arrival I was offered a sparkling water (the pineapple is good). For taking a class you do get a discount if you shop in store same day that's pretty nice. I should have taken a picture of the two women helping me today. I feel bad because I forgot their names but I love a good plaza local shop, especially when there is plenty of parking. I walked in and was immediately greeted by a lovely woman who asked if I've ever been in and gave me the lay of the land. I came in because I signed up for my aura photo via Aura Nomad and Slow North was the place they were popping up at. I knew the shop had hand poured candles but they had so much more. It turns out was also in the market for a going away gift for my boss... she got a new job and so I bought a neck wrap, linen spray in eucalyptus and lavender, and a candle in grapefruit and spearmint. So she can have some tools to help distress at the new gig. I made a new friend, Tara while I waited my turn for my aura picture and the ladies at Slow North we're so hospitable while I waited. Turns out they have candle making classes too. I loved that their home fragrance was rooted in herbal scent combos that were natural and beautiful. My fave for the fall season was citrus and clove. Slow North has continued to be a great place to shop during COVID. They have an easy to shop online ordering system and curbside pickup. They were one of the first local businesses to offer pleated face masks. I was able to order some to be mailed out of town to my mom. They also continue to offer crafting classes online. I discovered a macrame class with The Aquariust through Slow North, and I've now taken 4 or 5 online classes. I've also purchased pottery from local artist Kristen Saksa Juen whose work I found at Slow North. So not only do they have great offerings as a store, they introduce local artists and help give customers access to creating their own art. I have found this so refreshing and calming during the pandemic. read more

Many items were hand crafted by local artisans, all made from natural ingredients. The cards and journals were unique and fun. Would rate zero stars if I could. This brand completely stole the labels, fonts, and unique and creative names of another local woman-owned business which is completely not cool. The audacity of these people to copy another brand's candles down to the font on the labels and the unique name of the scents is absolutely absurd. And this is just one line of their products that is completely copied, I'm sure everything else in the store was copied from other creators and small businesses as well. I truly can not believe that they are getting away with creative theft and robbing a small business of its beautiful products and ideas.... it's completely beyond me why anyone would do such a thing. This is a cute boutique shop, like an elevated Blue Genie or Austin Gift Company, but classier. They have an eye for local Texan artistry: beautiful ceramics, jewelry, candles, soaps, and dish towels. I ended up buying a lavender essential oil bar soap for $7, containing no phthalates. read more

This is the cutest shop with so much to offer. If you're a free spirit like me and like bohemian style art/decor, crystals, self care items you will love this place. You can find perfect, simple gifts for others or treat yourself to something special and unique. The staff encourages social distancing, takes it's maximum occupancy seriously, and follows the best health protocols. Anytime I'm out of state and see Austin products being sold, I always feel a sense of pride for our city. In April, I was at a spa in Palm Springs and ogled at their Slow North candles. What a surprise to see they were made in ATX! I finally got a chance to visit their store today and it didn't disappoint. :) I'll be back soon! read more

This is a lovely little boutique in North Austin, and has some beautiful handcrafted goods made by local artists. However, I am beyond tired of going into boutiques in the city where I live and being treated differently because my skin is brown. My sister drove by this store and suggested we visit because they have local goods and even do some cool diy classes. So we went in and looked around, and I decided on a $42 pair of earrings. My sister didn't get anything because it's a typical boutique, and things are on the pricier side. The young, blonde cashier was odd with me, but made conversation about my earrings (she had enough sense not to be rude to a paying customer), but as soon as my transaction was over, she stared my sister down with a furrowed brow and sour, accusatory look on her face. I'm pretty oblivious in general, but even I noticed it. As biracial sisters who grew up in a small town, we both know that look well. Any person of color knows what that look means. We both left feeling awful. I'm glad I supported a local artist with my purchase, but I won't be back to Slow North. I was going to sneak back to buy my sister a few things she liked for Christmas, and we were both planning on treating ourselves to their next $45 candle-making class, but after that interaction, I'll be spending my money elsewhere. I encourage other customers of color to do the same, or at least prepare to be reminded once again that you are a second-class citizen. read more

I really wanted to love this place! I went to a candle-making class at Slow North with a few friends a couple weeks ago. The class itself was fun and each of us got to make a candle using their soy wax and our own blend of essential oils. Unfortunately, all four of us were super disappointed in the candles we ended up with. We followed the instructions about how much oil to add (they said adding any more would risk lighting the whole candle on fire since the oil is flammable), but when we lit the candles a few days later, we could not smell them AT ALL. I know they said the scent would be more subtle than a cheaper candle because these are all natural ingredients, but I literally have to have my nose within 6 inches of the flame to get even the faintest whiff of the candle. It wasn't just the blend of oils I used because all four of us had this issue even though we used totally different oil mixes. The candles they make there do have a scent when you burn them so I think this issue is specific to the class. The place is really cute but at almost $50 per ticket, I definitely do not feel like I got my money's worth. read more
