Finally got to try the famous Sprinkles Cupcakes! I got there on a Wednesday morning and there was literally no one there...just one worker at the front. The place was smaller than I thought so I can't imagine how hectic it can be during the busier hours. Unlike Georgetown Cupcakes, Sprinkles offers mini cupcakes for $2 each (perfect for those who don't have a sweet tooth)! They also even have mini cupcakes for your four-legged, furry friends! The cupcakes were phenomenal. The cupcakes were dense and moist and the frosting was light and fluffy (not as sweet as I assumed which is great!). My mother and I took an Uber to Georgetown where we decided to indulge our sweet tooth and innate desire for friendly competition. Not only did we try Sprinkles but we also stood in line for Georgetown Cupcake which appears to be a community favorite. The ironic parts are that we loved Sprinkles Cupcakes, didn't have to stand in line, and regretted not buying more! The people will tell you Georgetown, but listen to that voice inside of you that whispers "Sprinkles". The icing was REAL buttercream, and the cake was soft and fluffy as ever! I got the strawberry cupcake. First and foremost, the staff was very helpful and very nice! The only reason I did not like it as much is because of the cupcake itself. It was very sweet, and personally, I didn't find it special. The day before I had tried out the Georgetown cupcake version, and I personally like that one better in terms of taste. The cupcake itself looked really cute, so it was aesthetically pleasing. My expectations were probably just a little bit high based on the ratings I saw from Yelp. I hope to come back, maybe trying something else - to give them another chance. But for now, Sprinkles is just any average cupcake store to me. read more

They are not horrible but they aren't worth the price. I could justify it perhaps if this location served ice cream like some other locations do around the country. Nope, I'm not talking about co-owner Candace Nelson (who's very easy on the eyes), I'm referring to the cupcakes at Sprinkles Cupcakes. Holy bananas, had I known ahead of time that Candace Nelson and Frenchie Florian were gonna be at the grand opening, I would've skipped work and paid them a visit on opening day. Instead, I patiently waited and quietly seethed with cupcake envy as I read other Yelpers' reviews and saw their cupcake pix. Yes, I waited like a lion in the tall African Savannah grass until the time was right to pounce upon my sweet round prey....I waited until Saturday to try out THE best known cupcake chain in the U.S. of A. **stands in attention and salutes the American flag** My first impression as I walked into Sprinkles was that it's a very clean place, perfectly thought out and set-up to maximize your cupcake viewing. The system of placing your order with one of the many super-kind staff members worked perfectly! By the time the time you finished paying for the goods, you were handed a nice box elegantly emblazoned with the "Sprinkles" logo and you were on your way. The store was a bit smaller than I had expected, but because of the place-your-order-then-pay system, the line moved quickly. There were only two tables inside Sprinkles and thankfully I was able to grab one as I sat down with the following cupcake order: - Red Velvet - Banana cupcake covered in chocolate frosting - Dark chocolate cupcake with dark chocolate frosting and choco sprinkles - Strawberry The cupcakes had a very neat appearance, almost too perfect to eat. All of them had a custom color candy placed in the middle of the cupcake which helped in figuring out what was what using the large cupcake list (in case you missed the signs next to each cupcake flavor group). I took a small spoonful of each cupcake and here are my thoughts and ranking of the four tasty treats: 4. Banana cupcake - I was a bit reluctant to order a banana flavored cupcake after the Cake Love Banana Cupcake debacle of 2010 (see my Cake Love Review). But I was happily surprised to taste REAL banana in this cupcake! It wasn't that artificial banana flavoring used by some other joints, this was the real deal. The cupcake wasn't as light as the other ones, but was delicious and the chocolate frosting truly complimented the banana flavor. 3. Strawberry - Tasted fresh, the cake was light but the frosting was a bit too sweet for my liking. I couldn't help but compare it to the Baked and Wired strawberry cupcake which has some nice chunks of strawberry and had more of a sweetness to cake balance than this cupcake. Overall, it was still tasty and the cake was delicious. I just wanted more strawberry flavor. Kudos to Sprinkles for NOT using the fake strawberry flavoring or coloring in their strawberry cake. 2. Red Velvet - Was delicious, buttery and light. Again, a bit too sweet for my tasting as the icing had more sugar than I like for my Red Velvet frosting. Just a personal thing, but the cupcake itself was very delicious and a good representative of Red Velvet goodness. 1. Dark Chocolate Cupcake - This cupcake was the KING of the cupcake quartet. The cake was chocolaty, MOIST and soooooooooo good! It was perfectly complimented by the dark chocolate frosting which despite the extra chocolate sprinkles wasn't too sweet and balanced out perfectly with its cake. Out of the four randomly selected cupcakes, I enjoyed this one the most. All of the cupcakes had a great flavor and weren't as dense as some other cupcake places. I'm happy that there's another cupcake contender in DC and hope more people visit Sprinkles than Georgetown Cupcake...but still give Baked and Wired a chance. With all the cupcake choices right off of M street, not even the popped collars and pretentious George Townies can keep me away for satisfying my sweet tooth. Maybe this part of Georgetown should be renamed "Cupcake Alley". BTW, as I left I once again laughed at the long line of people waiting to get a cupcake at Georgetown cupcakes. Had I not been driving, I would've leaned outta the window with my Sprinkles bag and yelled, "Hey ya dumb cows! There's no line down the street at Sprinkles or Baked and Wired!" I was sad that I was unable to go to the original location out in Beverly Hills when I was out in LA (next time!). They are known to be the first cupcake bakery ever and are known for their trademark 'modern dots' that top all of their cupcakes. Besides cupcakes (banana, black and white, carrot, chai latte, chocolate coconut, chocolate marshmallow, cinnamon sugar, coconut, cuban coffee, dark chocolate, lemon, lemon coconut, margarita, milk chocolate, peanut butter chip, peanut butter chocolate, pumpkin, red velvet, strawberry, salty caramel, strawberry cheesecake, triple cinnamon, vanilla, and vanilla milk chocolate), they also have ice cream and cookies, gf/vegan options, and even cupcakes for pups! :D When I was in the area for an event, Sprinkles was located just a couple of doors down. I tried their mini red velvet - the cake itself was moist, but I thought it was a little too moist. It wasn't as overly sweet as I'd imagined it being; the frosting was a little too overwhelming, as the ratio seemed quite off. I did like the fact that the frosting was not a 'messy type,' and it stayed in tact in a BROWN BAG, when clearly, the cupcake had rolled around a bunch of times - I took it out of the bag when it was upside down, and the frosting was hardly affected :P I thought that was kind of ridiculous! On any given day if you asked me whether I like cupcakes, I'd get riled up and launch into a diatribe of how dumb cupcakes are. "The cupcake market is saturated!" I'd say. "We don't need ANOTHER freakin' over-frosted-muffin store!" I'd yell. Well, Sprinkles has calmed me down by changing all of that. Sprinkles makes a delicious cupcake and if you don't agree, well hmph, then you're a stupidhead. I ordered the dark chocolate chocolate cupcake and the banana dark chocolate one. Both were heavenly. The frosting is very sweet but the cake itself isn't, which for me, created an excellent balance. The banana cake is quite dense (it's basically banana bread covered with a layer of dark chocolate frosting) so beware if you prefer fluffier cake consistency. The flavor though, is excellent. It's a real banana flavor, not that chemically produced stuff. The best part? My entire time in the shop (from walking in the front door to walking out) was 6 minutes. Take THAT, Georgetown Cupcake! Walk in and immediately you're greeted by the friendly staff behind the counter. You then place your order and when your name is called, pay and skip out the front door clutching your sugary treats. Grab a spork while you wait, it's very helpful when you want to dig in but not peel back the whole cupcake wrapper! Recently I've been disappointed by dry cakes and frosting that's either overly grainy or excessively whipped, but the lemon cupcake I had at Sprinkles nailed it with texture. My friend warned me that the cupcakes were huge and very sweet, but I polished off the whole cupcake with no trouble, and actually found the flavor to be nicely subtle (or at least as subtle as a guilt-inducing dessert could be). Came here yesterday with my ma after taking her to Sunday brunch at Art and Soul. I was really looking for a place to buy Counter Culture coffee beans, but couldn't resist trying a famous Sprinkles cupcake. I'm glad I can check it off the list, but I don't think I'll be visiting again. The more cupcakes I eat from bakeries, the more I think I should go into business. Why do American bakeries think that anything with ten pounds of sugar in it is worth selling? What ever happened to quality ingredients and kitchen TLC? I only wanted to try one cupcake to start. I've made the mistake of buying a six pack from one of these cupcake bakeries, and have had to throw away 5 1/2 because they are just so bad. I will admit that the chocolate coconut cupcake from Sprinkles was not the worst I've had, but no where near perfect. The cake was no doubt made that day because it was not dry at all, and the frosting was not even slightly crusty. This is a plus in my book. A lot of places (I won't name names..) will sell day to two day old cupcakes, and it is easy to tell. It's always frustrating to pay upwards of $3.75 for a day old crusty cupcake. Grr... The chocolate cake was really lacking that deep dark chocolate flavor that is so welcomed from chocolate cake. I try to tell people that chocolate cake needs to look like mud not like dry dirt. The darker the better! This is especially so when it is topped with a mountainous peak of American style buttercream. Without a more bold flavor, the cake is just lost in a cloying sugary explosion of frankly...yuck. Maybe if you're 5-years-old, or suffer from what I like to call "Entenmann's Disorder" (if you get it, you it!), you might actually like this sort of thing and think I am just full of it. If you have ever been to a place that actually understands quality ingredients and kitchen TLC, you will agree that if Sprinkles wasn't backed by a brilliant business woman, it probably won't still be open. If you want a real TLC filled cupcake, go to Red Velvet Cupcakery. They at least know how to make French and Italian buttercreams. read more

First and last time eating the far inferior vegan cupcake on offer at Sprinkles... I love the cupcakes from Georgetown and from Baked & Wired, and I was somewhat looking forward to tying Sprinkles when I ordered a dozen for a work party. I have a dairy intolerance, so these days I go for vegan cupcakes to avoid butter and milk. The variety Sprinkles offered was their traditional red velvet, which I usually really like. Our order was dropped off promptly during the delivery window I'd selected online, which was earlier than I'd wanted but was the best I could get a few days out. They all looked delicious when we eventually opened the box to serve them, and they were still in good condition. But my vegan variety was off-putting from the first bite. It was too heavy (and not in a good way), and it tasted far too much of the coconut oil I assume they used. I didn't even end up finishing it, because I so didn't enjoy it. So, good service, but I'm one and done with Sprinkles and will stick with Georgetown Cupcake and Baked & Wired. read more

Not feeling the love, Sprinkles, not feeling the love :( Stopped by Sprinkles to get me some cupcake love on a Friday afternoon. I tried the standard with sprinkles and the chocolate cupcake. For both the cupcakes, the cupcake itself was on the edge of not dry and dry - gave me a sense that it has been sitting out for a few hours/overnight. Also the frosting was SUPER sweet something equivalent to the boxed variety you can find at any grocery store - there was no richness of flavor in the frosting at all. This must be one of the few times that I have not eaten an entire cupcake - about half of both cupcakes ended up in the trash for me - and for folks who know me, know that was a hard decision for me to make. Man, they aren't shy with the quarter-inch of icing. Unbalanced sweetness runs amok on top of decently moist cake. Raspberry special had a more distinct flavor than the strawberry, and I respect that they didn't bother with food coloring in the batter. The more interesting flavors (chai latte, pumpkin, ginger lemon, orange, carrot, mocha, etc) all run on limited schedules. Definitely a step up from Georgetown Cupcakes. read more

3.75 - GAH! My "Green Velvet" (dyed green for St. Patty's Day, duh) was so good and I know a good red velvet (well, green in this case) when I taste one. I wish I could have said the same about the Cinnamon Sugar cupcake :( I was not loving the cake one bit. Far too dense. Great idea, but the cake was not happening. Two bites and it saw the trashcan. The prices for the cupcakes aren't absurd and are about the same price most places are selling for. Another perk? Cupcakes are the new thing, so I had to grab a cupcake while in Georgetown. Much to my dismay, I went to Georgetown Cupcake and there was a line half a block long. Although there is a Sprinkles Cupcake (and ATM) in Dallas, I decided to ditch the long line and get a cupcake from Sprinkles. We walked right in, checked out the menu, and had cupcakes within five minutes. The employees were very friendly and willing to help. Inside this store is tiny (like many places in DC) and seating is limited to two small tables. As far as cupcake selection goes, they had a few flavors available but it was kind of limited. Maybe that's because I went later in the day. Pricey cupcakes but if you're willing to put up $3.75 for a cupcake and you're in the area, head to Sprinkles. read more

Although I doubt that if I were to try a Georgetown Cupcake now, it would change my mind about Sprinkles and Baked and Wired... We went here on a Saturday afternoon and there was a small line inside the store. I give kudos to the staff. Despite dealing with lots of customers, they manage to retain a pleasant demeanor. One person took our order and asked for a name. Then a second person rang up our order and we waited for our order to be filled. We got a half-dozen cupcakes. 1 vanilla, 1 key lime and 4 vegan red velvet. Our order took a bit longer to fill because the vegan cupcakes needed to be frosted. We tried the non-vegan cupcakes first. I found the vanilla one to have good flavor in the frosting. In fact, the frosting was where the bulk of the vanilla flavor was. However, there is too darn much frosting! My husband scraped off some of his frosting before even taking a bite of his key lime one. He, too, found the bulk of the flavor to be in the frosting. While he did like his cupcake, he likes the key lime ones at Sweetz even more. We both agreed that the cake part had the right density and the right amount of moistness. Now...on to the vegan ones. The frosting on these cupcakes appears to be confectioner's sugar with some coconut flavoring added. It's to be expected that vegan cupcakes have different frosting but, to be honest, I've had far better frosting on vegan cupcakes. The cake part was nice and moist and had good flavor. My husband did comment that he felt it was an oily cake, saying that he had oily residue on his hands after eating it. Still...we both agreed that it was better than some of the vegan cupcakes that are out there. Would we go again? We agree that we won't make a special trip for them. However, if we are in Georgetown and crave a cupcake, Baked and Wired will be our first choice for non-vegan ones. That's not to say that Sprinkles is bad---it's certainly not! So after our disastrous visit to Beard Papa's, we sought out another nearby sweet shop and found Sprinkles Cupcakes. The difference in atmosphere and attitude couldn't have been more different. As soon as we walked in the door a cheery "Welcome to Sprinkles" rang out from the woman behind the counter. It was almost closing, but, still, the two employees took the time to explain the cupcake flavors, ingredients, etc. Few flavors were left so late in the day, but they did have red velvet (my old favorite) and a green tea (my new favorite) that sounded perfect for my morning coffee. The red velvet was moist and flavorful, the icing was sweet but not overly so. Perfectly fine. But it's the green tea cupcake that blew me away! Green tea can sometimes have a bitter taste to it, but the cupcake balanced the tartness with a tinge of sweetness perfectly. The icing tasted a little sweeter than that on the red velvet cupcake, but I'm not sure if it's a different recipe or just because the green tea cupcake isn't as sweet as the red velvet. When we were there, I had noticed that there was an American Express offer for $5 off a purchase of $25. I disregarded thinking I could never eat $25 worth of cupcakes. Take a walk down M Street in Georgetown and you're bound to see hoards of tourists lined up down the impossibly (read: irritatingly) narrow roads. With Georgetown Cupcakes and Baked and Wired just a few blocks away, competition is steep. Where Georgetown Cupcakes are sweet and sturdy with good structural integrity, Sprinkles errs on the moist and crumbly side. Of all the places on M, Sprinkles nails the frosting-to-frosting carrier (aka cake) ratio best, but like both other shops, Sprinkles uses an American buttercream; sweet, cloyingly sweet, crusty. Okay, maybe crusty was a bit too much, but you know that sort of skin that grocery store frosted sugar cookies get (don't even pretend to not know what I'm talking about)? Yeah, that sort of crusty. Not really my thang. Sprinkes flavors end to be on the safer side: chocolates, coconuts, vanillas, and of course red velvet variations, so it's always a safe bet for something sweet that won't make you feel too guilty about eating a cupcake the side of your head (lookin' at you, Baked and Wired, though I don't mind the massive cupcakes at all) and insider fact: the vegan red velvet tastes better than the regular version. read more

I ventured into Sprinkles Cupcakes this weekend to satisfy my sweet tooth and curiosity about the recently opened cupcake shop. The interior of the store was brightly lit and cheerful. Rows of perfectly decorated cupcakes lined the display case, while a colorful menu board listed the various cupcakes and their ingredients. Tiny flat screen TVs and appropriately placed signage advertised Sprinkles' founder, Candice Nelson's role as a judge on the Food Network's Cupcake Wars. The affable teenage girls behind the counter eagerly offered to take the next customer's order. I couldn't make up my mind about which cupcake to get - I wanted to sample them all. I eventually settled on three of them - red velvet, banana with dark chocolate frosting, and the black and white cupcake (even though I couldn't possibly eat all three in one sitting). Each cupcake was beautifully presented with a color coded dot in the middle. The red velvet cupcake was by far my favorite. It was moist and flavorful with a sweet and delicious cream cheese frosting. This is the best red velvet cupcake I've had in a long time. The banana cupcake was equally delightful. The cake was light and fluffy with a wonderful banana flavor that was nicely complimented by the creamy dark chocolate frosting. The black and white cupcake had a bold chocolate flavor, but wasn't anything special. I'll skip that one next time. Sprinkles sells cupcake mixes, but I doubt I would be inclined to try to replicate these tasty bites. I'll settle for buying another decadent cupcake next time I'm in the neighborhood. read more

If you want good cupcakes and friendly service this is the place. I stopped in today and tried their Strawberry Champagne cupcake. The employee was very friendly. The friendliest of the cupcake places in Georgetown in my opinion. They have a rewards program that I believe is worth checking out more if you are a sprinkles fan (I personally prefer baked and wired). The cupcake itself was tasty. The cake moist, yet not too dense. The frosting was a little off in taste but that might have just been particular to the strawberry champagne. I have tried their red velvet cupcake in the last and liked it much more. The decoration on top of the cupcake was very cute but a little too crunchy too eat. I would not recommend eating it. This quality at this location is the same as that in CA. The cupcakes are moist and good. In my opinion, they are a little bigger than Georgetown's cupcakes! The line goes by fast (it's also shorter than Georgetown's!). I love the Red Velvet, Black & White, Strawberry, Mint & Chip, and Peanut Butter flavored cupcakes. So I would definitely recommend them! I'm so glad I finally got to try this place...I wanted to try it in LA, but the line was way too long and here, there was no wait. I thought I would not like them or that they would not be worth the hype...not the case, these were great. I had a Red Velvet cupcake and it was an amazing cake with just that hint of cocoa, yet full of richness and very moist and topped with a perfect cream cheese frosting. This was an awesome dessert. **This place was one of the places on our "DC Chocolate Tour."** Sprinkles is great, I really love their cupcakes. They change flavors daily-you can follow with their little postcards with all flavors and days listed. I think their frostings are great-not too sweet but creamy and just sweet enough. They come up with fun mixtures of flavors too. Their store is ALWAYS PACKED. Seriously, be careful. Also, I was told the are getting a "CUPCAKE ATM" that will deliver cupcakes 24/7 and settle your late night cupcake cravings. =D How amazing is that!? From what I know, first of its kind. Take a back seat to Gtown cupcake. Priced at $3.50 per cupcake. Sprinkles is the MOST EXPENSIVE cupcake shop in DC and prolly the WORST one. I ordered the: Smores - Great, toasted marshmallow topping, chocolate cake with ganache filling Triple Cinnamon - Okay, nothing spectalar Pumpkin - Okay, good cake icky cream cheese frosting Gingerbread - Okay, good cake icky cream cheese frosting Although the cake was good for all the cupcakes, the frosting was disgusting and really needs some work. The icky, overly sweet cream cheese frosting on the gingerbread and pumpkin cupcakes is disgusting! It's so heavy and nasty that I have to scrap it off. Cream cheese frosting should melt in your mouth. Many DC cupcake places (Hello Cupcake, Gtown, Sweet Lobby, Sweet Bites) make awesome cream cheese frosting, Sprinkles should hop on over for a lesson. The only redeeming cupcake was Smores. I enjoyed the toasted marshmallow frosting with ganache filling and graham cracker crust. Rich and decadent, the Smores cupcake tastes better than actual Smores. I'll definitely go back for more Smores cupcakes. They are available in Oct and mid-Jan. Although Sprinkles has rotating weekly and monthly flavors, their menu is quite confusing. Some of the seasonal cupcakes are available for only half the month and on odd dates. I've never heard of that. The cupcakes are very ordinary and at $3.50 (plus tax), you simply don't get what you pay for. They aren't aesthetically pleasing and to top it off, the little circle fondant is just as boring as their frosting. Gtown is much more innovative with their fondants, it's the perfect little cherry on top. I expected SPRINKLES on my cupcake, and instead I'm left with a big mound of frosting that I don't care for. read more

So the 4 stars is because DC Cupcakes is right down the street. I made my girlfriend come here once. We bought cupcakes at both DC Cupcakes and here. We compared the flavors. Sprinkles is really cute and the real bonus was that there was no line in the middle of winter to get cupcakes. Sadly, I do feel the cupcakes fell flat. I tried the red velvet and the frosting was thick and almost like a hard chunk that was separate from the cake itself. While still very good, my love goes to DC Cupcakes on this one. I'm totally open to another try the next time I'm in DC. read more
