I am from Scottsdale and was coming into town for my son's wedding. This was just a low key civil ceremony before the big bash. I searched Yelp extensively and settled on the bakers lounge. I called and spoke to the owner Katherine, explaining the situation. I told her that my you son and his husband have sophisticated palates and I left everything up to her. Katherine took care of everything and delivered the cake to the restaurant we were dining at. After dinner the beautiful cake appeared at our table and the grooms were really surprised. We have eaten a lot of really good cake but this cake was extraordinary. Pistachio cake with homemade raspberry and the most luscious buttercream. It was the perfect end to a lovely day. I had long wanted to try this place and pick up some sausage rolls for my Australian girlfriend during their regular Saturday hours. But it was very far from Metro, extremely hard to find, inconspicuous, and windows were covered up with white paper. Even worse, they had a large bouncer at the front door redolent of stinky weed, and he wouldn't let me in unless I had some kind of personal invitation. To a bakery?! And then he blindly lets in several people after me. Jeez, talk about a perfect example of DC arrogance - will not be going back. I had the Vanilla Sponge Cake and the Chocolate Sponge Cake and they were both really good. You could taste the richness of the ingredients in the filling and frosting. I'm a cupcake snob so if I like these they are good. I usually like heavier moist cupcakes, but these light airy sponge cakes were a pleasant surprise. The owner was working the register when I went in and she was very friendly and her English accent was cool. I also noticed that they had savory pies and tarts which aren't my thing personally, but are definitely worth noting that they offer if anybody is reading this and likes those option. I had made a mistake by taking so long to try this place out! Would like to give it more stars if I could. I ordered the Strawberry Champagne cupcakes for a birthday. It is hard to find Strawberry flavored cake and this place did not disappoint. The cake was not overly sweet at all, fluffy but not too light and the butter cream had the hint of champagne flavor in it. There were people who hated sweets fighting for more of these. I ordered 3 days in advance just to be sure and she had them ready and on time (actually a little early). I have not ordered from a real bakery before so I have nothing to compare the price to. However I was not disappointed spending the money after I was able to taste as well as the pleasant, prompt service. I will be frequenting this place. read more

I came here for a high tea on a Sunday with six friends, and it was wonderful. They had everything ready to go when we arrived, and it was a great atmosphere to enjoy tea, food, and friends on a cold winter day. We started with a lemon-ginger tea, and we ate from three-tiered offerings of biscuits, tea sandwiches, scones, and other delicious pastries. We had two vegans in our group and we were delighted by how the Bakers' Lounge prepared a full serving of excellent vegan versions of the biscuits, tea sandwiches, and pastries. (Their ability to serve vegans was one reason our group picked this place!) While I lived in London for a year, I never enjoyed a high tea there, but this felt quite authentic to me! Most importantly, the food was top notch, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and everyone had a great time. It's a nice space and event to bring a group of friends who'd like to spend some quality time together! And even though we all loved the food, we couldn't eat it all and each brought some home to enjoy later. I'd definitely recommend a high tea with friends here. read more

We ordered a gender reveal cake during the COVID-19 pandemic and Catherine was incredible. We emailed back and forth a bit, and then my husband and I ended up dropping off the envelope with the gender at 3:30 pm on the way home from the doctor. The cakes were already in the oven and she told us she'd actually be able to get us the cake in 2 hours (wasn't supposed to be until the next day). The cake was delicious (even a week later after sitting in the fridge!) and it was gorgeous (we didn't give her any parameters for the design). I called Katherine last minute and she allowed me to bring two small cakes to The Baker's Lounge. Katherine transformed two store bought cakes into beautiful customized cakes for a 25/30 yr olds birthday. Katherine was a life saver! I appreciate her so much for what she did for my family and I. We ordered a cake for my mother's birthday and she loved it so much she asked I order it for her sister's birthday. We are all sitting around raving and enjoying this second one tonight. We got a cranberry white chocolate layer cake. It is 10.5" and can easily feed 20 people. The buttercream frosting is out of this world and the cranberries give the cake a tart punch! YUM! I have tried the victoria sponge cake, bakewell tart, golden cake, and sticky toffee pudding here. I enjoyed everything and you can tell the treats are homemade from scratch. The bakewell tart was my favorite - an almond tart filled with strawberry jam. I also loved the golden ginger cake. They also have tea available at all times to enjoy with your treats. I ordered a pot of English breakfast and it paired perfectly with the sweets. While the cafe is not the most cozy or lively, the owner Cathy is warm and friendly and will make you feel welcome when you stop by. I plan to come here for a high tea service soon. It's a nice little spot in the "up and coming" Brookland neighborhood that's worth a visit for some treats. read more

While I may not be a skilled baker myself, I have been fortunate enough to be good friends with a professional pastry chef for many years. I was not just pleasantly surprised, I was genuinely blown away by how good these cakes are. My personal fave is the mini Victoria sponge (it tastes just like my granny's!), but everything is good. And the owner is lovely - I think she also does full-sized cakes to order, so I may have to find a reason to celebrate soon! I ordered a coconut cake for my mother in law's birthday. I received an email that it was delivered, but it wasn't. My husband and I ended up both calling the owner to find out what the issue was. I reached her probably a few min after my husband spoke with her. She told me very curtly that she was handling it and then hung up on me. She may have been having a very bad day. Also understand - it's probably annoying to have us both call (we were in different places). But please don't hang up on customers especially when they've paid for a birthday cake that wasn't delivered. I appreciate that the owner retrieved the cake so we had it in time for celebrations; it had been delivered to the wrong address. The cake also tasted good. I just wish the experience had been better so we would be more inclined to be repeat customers. read more

We had the best experience with Catherine and The Bakers' Lounge! We went to Catherine to design our wedding cake during COVID and she was so accommodating. We had a great tasting and then leading up to the wedding, she was incredibly communicative and helpful. She designed a beautiful two layered cake that was vanilla bean on one layer and chocolate salted caramel. Amazing!! Her cake design was a perfect match to our citrus themed wedding. I have been dying to try the Bakers' Lounge for a few months now, but I just got here a few weeks ago. At 7:00 PM on a Saturday night there were still plenty of options to choose from. I was greeted very nicely by the owner, and you can tell she loves what she does. We ordered a Red Velvet Cupcake, Blueberry Almond Tart, and the Victoria Sponge cake. For around $14 for three desserts, the prices are a bit cost prohibitive for me to return, but the desserts were very yummy. The Red Velvet wasn't particularly cream cheese-y, but the icing was still very good. The cake was very moist, but I would have liked more cake, as it was very icing heavy. I would love it on any kind of cupcake. I also really liked the almond blueberry, and it was one of the more unique desserts I have seen so far in DC. The Victoria Sponge cake was too sweet for my personal tastes, but it would be good for anyone who has a high sweet tolerance. There is a cute seating area inside, and they also do high tea on Saturdays. While I am sure the overhead cost is very high to keep this place going, I'm not financially stable enough to be a regular patron. read more

I purchased tickets to the Valentine's Day dinner being promoted on EventBrite. Initially, I was excited to attend as the reviews on Yelp were promising. I received notification that the event was being cancelled the morning of; not much time to make other plans. The only thing I was offered was a refund, not a credit or option to come in at a different time. 2 weeks later, I have to follow-up on the status of my refund. Catherine says she has to contact EventBrite so they can submit refunds (obviously, she isn't used to EventBrite because the organizer can do this on their own). I'm just very let down by this place. It's hard enough making any type of plans in the DC area on Valentine's Day and to have the event cancelled the morning of was a real bummer. I wish she would have shown a bit more compassion for those who did pay in advance to attend an event the lounge was hosting. Let's just pray I get my refund sooner rather than later. read more

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our "high tea" baby sprinkle at the Baker's Lounge. The set-up was perfect...cozy, simple and elegant. The sandwiches, pastries, and sweet & savory treats were so flavorful and baked to perfection. My favorites were the mini-cheesecakes, sausage pastries, shrimp salad sandwich, and the melt-in-your mouth scones but each person in our group had a different favorite. We had such a splendid time sipping freshly brewed English tea and wine (we brought our own bottles) and savoring our treats that we lost track of time but Catherine (the owner) was very accommodating and made us feel right at home. The honoree/mom-to-be was so impressed with the experience that she was trying to set up a future gathering at the Bakers Lounge before the baby comes. This place may easily become my newest addiction which can't be great for my waistline. The Baker's Lounge is a lovely addition to Brookland and I would highly recommend stopping in for a delicious treat, hosting an event there or use their catering (Catherine bakes whole cakes, cupcakes, etc). read more

Its a Sunday night and all of a sudden a sweet craving overcame my BF and I so we searched for a spot that was local. Plus, we like to support small businesses. Even though the website says they are open on Sundays, they really aren't. But, we lucked out because they had an event earlier in the day and was gracious to unlock the doors when they saw our sad faces...lol. The place is bright and airy. Very nice and modern for a bakery. They were packing up for the night and didn't have a huge selection so we took one of each cupcake - caramel, vanilla caramel and chocolate mint. The cupcakes seemed on the small side to me for $3.50 each. The Vanilla Caramel was a little dense and dry to me but had good flavor. The cupcakes also seemed to be a 50/50 ratio of cake to icing which I didn't like because it makes it overly sweet. I'm not a huge icing person so please take that into consideration. The service was great. The place looked great. Its just that the product wasn't as memorable to me and my cupcake standard is pretty high. So happy to find a small business for coffee and breakfast and pastries! She changes the options up daily. Today there are egg soufflé baskets - one with a meat option and one without. Some pan chocolate, ham and cheese croissants and cookies. Not sure how long this will last but she's advertising free coffee from 7-10am. The nod to London is tasteful and the seats and tables are comfortable. It's not too crowded nor loud. Bright, clean and not stuffy or pretentious at all. Very cute little bakery. The owner was EXTREMELY friendly and the plans that she has for the location sound like this will be a winner (wifi, high tea, coffee, loungey, etc). Sits right on the corner of 12th & Evarts (it's easy to miss since I passed it several times this week and didn't even notice). I tried the Apple Sultana Tart, Bakewell Tart, and salted caramel cupcake. A little pricey (total for the 3 was ~$14, after 10% off) but all were moist and tasty. It's Friday and I decided that seemed like a good reason to treat myself! Reading the reviews for The Bakers Lounge, I knew I had to try it. I am so glad I did!! The space is bright and airy, with tables and chairs for folks to enjoy their desserts together, and a lovely set of armchairs for relaxing near a bay window facing the street. The display case was a feast for the eyes! Catherine's desserts are beautiful and tantalize the tastebuds. I liked, first of all, that they were of a reasonable size. Not too small, but not gargantuan, either. I ended up taking a few things home, and I felt like I could do that without finding myself in possession of enough sweets to feed an army. The Bakers Lounge hits a nice "sweet spot" between too-small and unappetizingly big. The portions are just right. When I got home, the moment of truth: how do they taste? Well, true to a bakery that has a more European flair, they were pleasantly sweet without being cloying. I enjoyed a mini-sized apple caramel cupcake (dense and moist with baked apple... sooo good!) and a more standard-sized salted caramel cupcake. The salted caramel cupcake had a lighter cake base with a tender crumb. Both were sweet and indulgent and delicious without that too-familiar toothache I've come to associate with a lot of other bakery cupcakes. Both desserts were clearly made with fresh, real ingredients. The taste of real, high quality butter was unmistakable in particular. The flavors were balanced, with nothing overpowering. This was especially notable with the salted caramel cupcake, which was salty-sweet in the way a good chocolate chip cookie is. The salt was complimentary to the other flavors and didn't overwhelm them. I bought a blueberry frangipane as well, but I won't get to that until breakfast tomorrow. The Baker's Lounge is quite possibly the most disappointing business in Brookland. My husband and I had our wedding reception in May in a friend's backyard in the neighborhood. We were committed to supporting local businesses for the event so we were excited there was a neighborhood bakery for us to order dessert for the occasion. We decided on 4 dozen assorted cupcakes for the event. We had a great experience with Catherine until the day of our reception. We had paid for our bill in total and given her the delivery information, etc. About halfway through our reception, I realized that the cupcakes still hadn't been delivered. I attempted to call Catherine and was unable to get through to her, so I emailed her. I then received a callback and within an hour 2 dozen cupcakes (half of our order), none of which were flavors that we ordered were delivered and dropped off with one of my guests. She did not ask to speak with me nor did I receive an apology. As soon as I realized what happened, I called her and was able to speak with her. She informed me that her driver had been in an accident and she would provide me with a partial refund. I believe that she actually just forgot about the order and upon receiving my email tried to haphazardly throw together whatever she could in the moment. In terms of customer service, I found the entire interaction to be unacceptable. I did not receive even close to what I ordered and I did not receive any communication from Catherine the day of the event regarding any issue with our order. After much back and forth, emails, and my husband going to the store in the person twice, Catherine sent me an email saying that she would provide a full refund. This was back in May. It is now October and I have not received a cent back from my disastrous order. DON'T EVEN BOTHER WITH THIS PLACE. If you want desserts for an event, go with some place that's more established and more organized so you don't have to worry about Catherine's poor business acumen. read more

I placed an order via website for a 6" cake and some savory pastries. The cake I wanted was not on the menu, but they were able to easily accommodate me. Catherine was very responsive to emails from the website, and delivery was very convenient. The cake is remarkably good, even days later (a 6" cake really does make 10+ good-sized slices), with real vanilla bean in the icing. Highly recommend and will use again. read more

If your looking for a nice place to relax and eat pastries this is your place. Very inviting and has something for everyone's palette. My favorites are the pineapple upside down cake, strawberry short cake and the caramel pecan tart. I recently tried the vegetable quiche and it was amazing! The Baker's Lounge stands out as a British bakery in DC. I arranged for her to provide my milestone birthday cake and an assortment of individual-sized British cakes. Having seen the beautiful cakes she has made for others in the past, I gave her full creative license to create my centerpiece cake. The cake was absolutely stunning and she displayed all the cakes beautifully. I was advised by Catherine when I ordered the cakes that guests may choose not eat dessert. This was not the case at my party as I only got to scrape the crumbs and frosting from the bottom of the birthday cake platter. I was so thrilled that my guests enjoyed the cakes. I am fortunate that I can get British cakes whenever I want by visiting her shop. read more
