This might be dangerous. A Spring Mill on my daily commute route. I have been watching the construction of this place for months now. It seemed to take forever, but that day came yesterday. I had to make a pit stop here. It is on the right side of the road on my journey home from work. They use to sell their bread in the Co-op across the street, but they wanted to expand and sell sandwiches to the lunch time crowd. I plan to try the melted mozzarella & pesto. The location is good. There are four meters on Grant Ave right next to the bakery that take a minimum of $0.25 for twenty minutes. After parking here I realized I could have just drove down half a block and parked for free. Oh, well. Their breads are awesome! I will be back for a loaf next week. For now, I'll settle for a chocolate chip cookie for now, and a scone for later. Both for just about $3.50. The breads aren't so cheap, but they are so good, and fresh! They always use all natural ingredients and no preservatives. If you buy a loaf and can't finish it within 3-4 days, freeze half. It is best when not refrigerated. So many daily breads, and breads only offered on certain days (I love the Spinach Feta). This will be my carbilicious downfall. read more

Wonderful! What a treat. I don't know how we missed this place, we've lived in the area now nearly two years. But there we were, last Sunday: hot, hungry, thirsty from tending our new garden. We were greeted by a clean, beautiful, cool, atmosphere and friendly service. We began at the pastry counter. Quiches, turnovers (both sweet and savory), scones, pound cakes, cookies...we were drooling! So we started our order. But then I saw they had sandwiches, so we had to get two. Both the man and I tried the pesto, mozzarella, tomato with pesto sandy and it was so good! The bread was whole wheat, really chewy and moist--tasted just like homemade. The pesto was delicious as were the tomatoes, I'll bet they were found at the nearby farmers' market or TPSS. Mozzarella was squeaky fresh. They even agreed to add some pickles on the side. We had to order once again as I spied Wheat Montana hot cereal packaged for sale. If you haven't had this it's so delicious! Turns out most all the wheat used in this facility is from Wheat Montana in Three Forks! After that discovery, I became a forever fan of Spring Mill. I used to live in Montana and know how special those grains are. These folks must be serous about bread if they're bringing that quality to the community each day. My final purchase was a second Boylan lemon seltzer. Just another little treasure waiting for you at Spring Mill Bread. We'll be back next Sunday! read more

Absolutely no room for bad press here. First the place is cute and welcoming, like even if you planned to order to-go you'll ending up sitting for a few minutes. Second, I needed lunch at 4pm on a Friday and the lovely lady at the counter was very helpful and suggested the chicken salad. Got it toasted with lettuce and tomato and with the first bite I was a satisfied customer. The chicken salad was fresh, clearly made that day and f-l-a-v-o-r-f-u-l! It was so good I nearly inhaled it. I know the place was good because I found myself walking back down the street 15 minutes later for dessert. Of course, I was staring at all the baked goodness while waiting for the sandwich. Ended up with the carrot cake and as soon as I started eating it I had a feeling of de ja vu. I suddenly could care less what was going on around me and totally focused on how rich this gluten free cake was, how the nuts added a perfect hint of crunch, how the cream cheese was light and whipped well. It was the same feeling I had when I started eating the chicken salad sandwich. The Spring Mill in Takoma Park makes the BEST sandwiches. They are huge and delicious. Every time we're going on a trip we order them in advance for pick up to take on the road with us. Also, the staff is super friendly and attentive. It goes without saying that the baked goods are killer. I highly recommend this shop for a quick sandwich or a sweet treat or both. read more

Saw on the Main Street Takoma facebook page that Spring Mill Bread Co. finally soft launch opened today. We came over here to check out their store. Just bread and baked goods for now, but all looks delicious. Next weekend they'll fully open with sandwiches as well. I'm looking forward to a new spot in Takoma to hang out at for some food and a spot to work a bit. We bought a loaf of bread, but haven't tried it yet. It's sitting in my bag as I walk home. Will update once we try the bread. :) Update: 7 grain crunch bread is excellent. Will be buying more bread from here. read more

Found this place while biking from D.C. and into Takoma Park on the Maryland side. First, I was happy to see a local business still open during COVID-19 and gladly support it. Second -- BREAD! My first visit was a while ago. I bought a lemon square, raspberry cheese danish and small bottle of Martinelli's apple juice (best juice on the planet!). It was all great. My second trip was a few weeks later. Another bottle of Martinelli's apple juice a breakfast croissant with egg, cheese, bacon, tomato and a bag of chips. It HIT THE SPOT! It was so good! Everything melded perfectly. I have to say each time I visited, the staff was nice, wearing their PPE and the orders were quick to be served. read more

We've been buying our bread from Spring Mill for several years and love it. We veered away once but came back because nothing else compares to their peasant white. As COVID started impacting businesses around Takoma, Spring Mill seemed to manage through the required changes quite seamlessly. In fact, when yeast was out everywhere else, we were able to buy some fresh yeast from here in April and I loved how my homemade bread turned out using it. This review is really for the past year - they've been phenomenal during COVID. They implemented user-friendly covid protocols immediately. There's no need to order online- you can walk-in, with a mask of course, and buy what you need- as long it's during their business hours. The cakes and pastries are delicious, too. When we want a treat, we go for carrot cake, sweet and savory turnovers, or scones! read more

Today I bought 3 lemon bars and when I got home I took them out of the box to put them in a Tupperware container, when I took the bars out one of them had an extremely long hair stuck to the top of the lemon bar, longer than 12 inches, not very appetizing , just glad I found it before my family started eating them. I am a weekend visitor and have noticed the quality of things have gone down. I usually get the peasant bread that is good and never disappoints; however lately it seems like I get day old bread. Today I had the vanilla cupcakes for me and two others - I have bragged about the cupcakes - today they were not fresh. The cupcakes are $3 and should have been $0.50 that frosting was hard and the cake was not fresh and very very dense. I have been a faithful weekend visitor but I need to find another spot for fresh baked goods. read more

I was hoping to find some hearty whole-grain bread at this store in Takoma Park. Unfortunately, the clerk was uncertain which of their breads have the most whole-grain ingredients, which seemed odd for someone working at a business with the word "bread" in its name. Even the store web site doesn't provide an ingredients list in standardized format, only a "nutritional analysis" that's somewhat helpful. Ive been to the Spring Mill located in Bethesda many many times, so when looking for a bite to eat near Washington Adventist, we decided to try this new location. Its great to see the same quality of food at this location as well, and the same earthy and homey decor inside. Besides the great bread, the sandwiches were well made and very fresh. One complaint though- its not very organized for ordering. It would be great if they could clearly set up some kind of line- no one knew where to stand or who had ordered yet. Welp, I've been here a buncha times now. And I'm sad to report that there is only one type of bread with a nice crust on it at Spring Mill: the baguettes. They sell out pretty fast. Most of what they make are loaves of bread (sandwich style) that are soft. I wish, wish, wish there were other breads available that were crusty on the outside. an update, raising a star because of the quality of the baked goods. However, a couple of issues: - I still wish they would have covers on the baked goods behind the glass wall. Insects are still landing on the food. - The coffee is wildly inconsistent. It is often lukewarm or just plain cold, and sometimes quite watered down. Please re-train the staff to show them how to correctly brew the coffee, and please don't serve cold coffee. read more

Pesto Mozzarella heated on seven grain bread to die for. The lemon squares are my daughters most favorite. The place looks wonderful and the food and service great! We go here often because it's close. Their baked goods are very inconsistent. Most of the time everything is dry. One time we purchased a coffee cake to take home and it was severely under-baked to the point of being inedible. We had to take it back. Their sandwiches are good. read more

I live in Takoma Park and have been to Spring Mill Bakery several times... and their products have been fine. Today I bought a baguette and a piece of turtle cheesecake (March 6, 2018). The cheesecake was the worse piece of cheesecake I have ever had. They should honestly get rid of this recipe. Even my 8 year old daughter didn't like it. If you offer refunds for unhappy customers, please let me know. I want Spring Mill Bakery to do well, but you have to do way better than this. read more

This is an old style bakery so you won't see uniform slices of the same item day after day. Variety is great. I wish they had more veggie or vegan breakfast and sandwiches. I wish their coffee was strong without the slightly burnt flavor. I Wish they had soy or almond milk for coffee. I wish they'd put everything they sell on the menu board with prices. The turnover and fruit items are really delish. The breads are not too sweet. I'll definitely come again. read more
