The docent at the Gettysburg Children's Museum recommended this while visiting which helped us decide our dinner plans. He said that "You are transported back in time the moment you step into the place." He was not wrong. Though it was late evening, there were still tons of people waiting to get in. We were starving but figured the wait must mean the food was worth it and...it was! We chose first available and were seated at the bar in the corner. It was nice because we didn't wait long to be served and we had I nice view of the entire restaurant. A very rustic place that looked as I would imagine it did in 1863. My friend ordered a Caesar salad, fillet, and a baked potato. The salad came with a freshly baked yeast dinner roll. Fillet was cooked to perfection. I ordered the King's Soup which was French onion soup except with large chunks of tender beef in it. My entree was the Spring House Salad which was mixed greens, apples, walnuts, chipped smoked turkey, with herb dressing and it was divine. The sleeper of the meal was the datenut bread with cream cheese that came with my salad. A dark brown molasses bread with dried fruit and nuts. It was so chocked full of nuts and fruit while the dough was the most moist bread I've ever had. I couldn't eat both pieces after the meal so took it in a to go container. I ate it on the drive home and it was still moist and delicious. read more

Had a blast I love this place. The food was good and the people were very nice. The ambience felt like it was 1776 again.

We enjoyed the early American colonial ambiance very much. Think "Sleepy Hollow tavern" and that will give you an idea. We walked down some creaky steps into a room with smoky looking stone walls, wooden beams. Servers are dressed in period costume, and the menu is full of colorful vernacular from the times. The menu options were good, and we both enjoyed our meals and the lagers and ciders on offer. It can be a bit of a wait (ours was 45 minutes but we didn't really have anywhere to be, and weren't starving) so make a reservation or get on the list and have a drink or two on the patio outside (there are worse ways to pass the time than a pleasant drink). We stopped in here on Friday, July 24th after a quick day visit to Gettysburg, PA. The Spring House Tavern is located in the cellar of the Dobbin House. It's dark, unique, authentic and the best place to have a bite to eat on a hot summers day. There is NO elevator so be prepared to walk down a flight of steps. Hubby ordered the French Onion soup which is their specialty. By now, if you've read any of my reviews, you know I HATE onions. I tasted the broth and a little speck of cheese and I'll admit that if I could have ordered it without the onions - broth, bread and cheese only - I would have done it in a heartbeat. This is actually in the basement below the Dobbin House Tavern. We enjoyed pre-dinner cocktail and the Home Made Date Nut Bread with cream cheese. BEST BREAD!!! we only did the sample but recommend buying the loaf to take home. The cocktails were tasty, the menu was a bit on the sweet side for cocktails for my taste, but I found plenty to enjoy. When it was time for reservations at the Dobbin house, we were able to pay our bill and take our cocktails with us up the secret stairs to the entrance of the Dobbin House. Although this was a little tricky to find, it's located in Dobbins House at a separate enterance down below to the basement/spring house. As you walk down the old wooden steps you truly feel like you're stepping back in time. We were seated at an old wooden table close to the actual spring, it was so cool! The service was friendly and fast. I appreciate that the servers were all wearing costumes from the time period. On to the food... the French onion soup was the best I've ever had in my life. It was incredible. My husband orders the pot roast au jus sandwich and it was everything you'd hope for. Sweet and savory and so delicious. It was so amazing! I ordered the filet with the baked potato and green salad. The filet was char grilled to medium perfection and had the best flavor! We also shared their famous pecan pie for dessert and licked our plate clean. It was so yummy. The atmosphere and food was very good to incredible at the Spring House Tavern. We had to ask directions to find the place. Signs everywhere for the Dobbin! Go to the front parking lot and on the left hand side of the gift shop is a door for Spring House. The walls are old stone and wait staff dresses in period dress. It certainly made us feel like we were transported to the 1860s. Amongst five of us we enjoyed ribs (highly recommend), Reuben, half chicken, and beef dip. No complaints table round; onion soup is also delicious. The Rum Bellie drink goes down smoothly and yes, it is potent. We rounded out dinner with desserts. Brownie sundae won over the apple pie. Service was friendly but not so fast. We were sitting at our table for more then 5 minutes before the waitress said she'd be right with us. Early acknowledgement would have merited another star. Spring House is recommended because of variety of food from salads to sandwiches to dinner, and also delicious food. Try it out! read more

Spring House is the less formal sibling of the Dobbin House upstairs. While Dobbin House is a special event or date night type dining establishment, Spring House is more of a burger and a pint kinda place. As is well documented, the French onion soup steals the show here. It's the only thing that I'd say is a must. The mixed drinks are great too, I especially enjoyed the sangria. Food is just ok, maybe slightly above average. I had an alright crab cake sandwich. I'm just not a huge sandwich person which is most of the menu here so I am partial to the upstairs iteration of the Dobbin House, but for the leas formal among us it is a solid dining option in Gettysburg. read more

When you go to Gettysburg you should make a stop here. If you are looking for a period place to eat then look no further than this little gem. Spring House Tavern is hiding in the basement of Dobbin House. You may think that's weird, but it totally works. When you enter you descend the stairs and enter another era. That may sound odd, but you really do. You enter a room that transports you back in time to what a "bar" used to be. According to some a bar is that of which there is a barrier between you and the server, this place took that and kind of ran with it. The bar actually has a barrier other than the counter top. If you are lucky enough to choose this seating look up. There is a barrier that can come down and latch into place that creates some bars between you and the alcohol behind the bar. Kind of a neat little thing when you think about it. To add to this aesthetic, look around the rest of the room. You got tow big hearths in here that makes you think your meals are going to be cooked in front of you. All the tables have that old, worn look and to top it all off, there is an actual natural spring flowing through the restaurant. You can't get more authentic than this. Add to that that the servers are in period clothing as well and you honestly can't go wrong with visiting this place. Now, the main reason for stopping in here, the food. The menu is pretty much a bar menu, but with a limitation. You will not be getting anything fried here. They do not have a fryer so you will not be able to partake in anything fried. Which isn't always a bad thing, gives you a chance to explore what might tickle your taste buds. To start we ordered drinks. The drink specials the day we were there were pretty fantastic. I had the hot buttered rum and my better half had the hard apple cider. It was great to have these drinks to warm us up on our trip here. It was freezing outside, but these drinks warmed us up. My better half decided that he would like to try the onion soup here. According to our server this is a house favorite and they go through a lot of it. I'm not a fan of onion soup, but he devoured that bowl. We then moved onto ordering our main course. For the life of me I cannot remember what my better half ordered, or maybe I should say I cannot remember correctly what he ordered because I was focused on what I got while we were here. I had ordered the Dobbin Hamburger with Cheese. I really enjoyed this as they cook it to order and you can tell that it is cooked on a grill. It had that charred flavor and a bit of crunch. I enjoyed that you got the chance to add the amount of condiments to your burger to your liking. With there being no fryer you have your choice of potato salad, Cole slaw, or potato chips as a side. I went with the potato salad. Tasted pretty good, a bit more mustard than I prefer, but it was not overwhelming. This also came with a pickle spear. I left full and satisfied. The price can be a bit steep, but that all depends on what you are ordering, but the prices are on the menu and their website to give you a heads up so you know exactly what you are in for. Our server was amazing. Each time she greeted us we got younger. By the end of our service here we were being referred to as baby boys. Hiding underneath the Dobbins House, here's a deep, dark tavern. Yep, the same food but with a Revolutionary War theme going on. From the use of "Olde" on the menu and the waitstaff dressed in period costume, it's working. Of course, there's wifi and they accept credit cards so it's mixed. French Onion soup to start was excellent. Nice crisped and melted layer of cheese on top of a rich broth with a few actual pieces of beef in the soup. Tasty and great on a cool evening. Main course, I chose the steak sandwich. Impossible to pick up and eat as it was served on a flat pita bread. A good portion of steak and veggies including grilled onions. It occurred to me as I was eating it that I'd not been asked how I liked it, but the medium was quite good. A good meal and a decent price. If you are visiting Gettysburg and want an authentic experience you should stop by here. It's located in the downstairs part of the Dobbin House. The atmosphere is dark/cozy and you eat by candlelight. I suggest you bring a sweater because it was a bit chilly in the tavern. We stopped by for lunch and the food came out quick. Located in the basement of the historic Dobbins House, Spring House Tavern is my favorite place in Gettysburg to grab lunch or a late evening drink. Housed in a building erected in 1776 and a survivor of the Battle of Gettysburg it exudes with atmosphere and charm, but not only for those reasons. The food is great, and the service top notch. During my most recent visit I had their Maryland crab cakes which contained plenty of jumbo lump crab, were tasty and not at all loaded with fillers. I ate at this restaurant last night for dinner after arriving in town. It was a lite hard to find the entrance but when you enter you go downstairs into a basement. It's dark and full of wood and has a lot of ambience. At every table and at the bar is a wax candle burning which gives the restaurant a Civil War period feel. The waitresses are also dressed in period garb. After looking at the menu by candle light I asked for the pit roasted chicken but was told they were out. I then went with the steak sandwhich and some of their homemade Cole slaw as the side. I was really hungry so I ordered their onion soup for an appetizer. The soup was very hot when it arrived. After letting it cool a little it had a lot of cheese in it and was very good (4). It was $6 and I really enjoyed it. Then the meal came out. The sandwich was large however I was a little disappointed with it. The steak had very little flavor to it. Other reviews had stated how good theirs was but mine was basically flavorless. I have to give the sandwich a (2). The Cole slaw was very good. Nice and creamy (4). My service was good (3.5). I really like this restaurant. The atmosphere is awesome and I recommend you come here. You decide if you want to take a chance on the steak sandwich. If I come back I won't. I am giving a 3 for my meal but probably should give a 2 because of the steak. However I believe this place is worthy of at least a 3. Come for the atmosphere. It's cool especially at night. read more

What has happened to this gem of a place? Menu is very limited. Only one paper menu per table? It took awhile for the 4 of us to pass around and decide. Masks are lifted and no more Covid restrictions. Not sure why this place is operating like this. Wait staff not friendly. The tall male waiter we had has zero skills. He doesn't talk - it sounds like he yells. Borderline rude. Ordered sandwiches and burgers. Good but not great. The smell from the crab cake 2 tables over was so stinky, I'm glad I didn't order that. I no longer have a warm feeling for this place. Hire better servers like the cheerful ladies upstairs. This place fails and I no longer recommend coming here. Needs an overhaul fast. read more

I don't remember the name of the server but she had black hair and brown eyes and a very bright smile!:) I was drunk asf by the time I got to the tavern I ordered 13 drinks before hand and I was bar hopping so I could get more! I come here and I order whiskey like a man should! I go to the bathroom because I am so out of it and this server is waiting outside for me asking me where my friends or family are I don't remember what I said cause you know I am so drunk but she goes is everything okay at home...? And we just have this whole therapy sesh going on right outside the bathroom door she gives me her number and goes call me... so the next morning I call her and I go sorey for getting SLOSHED last night would you like to go out sometime and she goes yes I think you could use some friends... And I'm like WTF SHE JUST FRIENDZONED ME but then we get things going and we go on a little walk and just start talking and talking and talking... I end up staying the night and then one thing leads to another... UH OH she's pregnant so we decide to make it offical and keep the baby. She has a girl named Lilian(beautiful name) and Lilian is just the cutest little baby and she looks just like me! So a few weeks after she has Lillian I decide to propose to her!!! After reading reviews before our arrival, my husband and I had decided to eat dinner here while passing through Gettysburg on our way to DC. We were drawn to the historic aspects of Dobbins House and were intrigued by the candlelight dinner in the basement of this dwelling. It did not disappoint! We arrived 45 minutes to closing, were welcomed by the hostess, and seated immediately. The room is now very large but was not crammed. The fact that it was a basement and was decorated to the period of the home's origin was very cool too. Our waitress was very friendly and continually refilled our waters, despite being busy with several other tables. I got the crabcakes (delicious) and my husband ordered the steak. My experience here was completely average, and I wanted to add my review as an alternate view to all the glowing reviews that, after dining there, are baffling to me. We visited the tavern on a Saturday night, eager to have an authentic or at least historically themed meal but it was none of these things. The space is neat but everything else is just fine. The wait staff was, again, fine but not engaging or particularly attentive. We ordered the "sparking cyder, a country drink pressed of sustenance," and were surprised to get the same bottle of Martinelli's they sell at the grocery store. At least put it in another container! Nothing was fresh--french onion soup, caesar salad, and turkey club (which was really just a turkey sandwich--they even forgot the bacon)--all disappointing. Also, they advertise soup and sandwich, it says you can get any deli sandwich, but it's really only an option of a meat on focaccia bread, you can't choose from the menu. Overall, it felt like eating a a museum cafeteria rather than an actual dining establishment. For $70, I expect much more at least in atmosphere and food. read more

After reading the other reviews, I have to say I was shocked to read what people were saying about Springhouse. If your palate is geared toward Panera, or any other fast food chain, please don't expect that kind of fare at a cooked-to-order restaurant. If you go to an extremely popular restaurant at peak times, please expect to wait. That's just common sense, not a failing of the restaurant. Springhouse Tavern is a tavern. An old-school, colonial tavern. It will be dark inside. They will offer tavern food. If that's not what you're looking for, you should probably keep looking. That said... Hubby and I just returned to Springhouse and, once again, the food was stellar. This place is just the best! This visit we arrived at about 6 on a Wednesday night. I have some physical limitations but have no trouble on the short stairs (I just hold on to the handrails). Hubby has macular degeneration and has no problem reading the menu. Place was crowded but service did not suffer at all. We were seated immediately, offered drinks, and served quickly. We once again went for the onion soup and specialty drinks, and they more than lived up to our memories. Hubs had the steak sandwich, which he loved. He said the potato salad was good, not great. I had the grilled chicken, which was soooo juicy I couldn't believe it. Absolutely no exaggeration: it was the best chicken of any type I've had in YEARS. Hubs says it's the best he's ever had. This is a great place to visit, but it's a 45-60 minute wait for a table and then another 40 minute wait for your food. If you have the time to wait, it's worth checking out because the tavern is pretty cool. The servers are friendly and dressed in costume. I ordered a crab cake sandwich and the crab was great, but it was served on boring sliced white bread, the side of cole slaw was fine, but nothing special. My partner liked her burger and chips. We also ordered the Oregone dark ale on tap and that was quite good. If you're visiting Gettysburg for the first time, I think this place is worth a visit. read more

The tavern is located in the basement of the oldest house in Gettysburg, built in 1776. It is a bit dim and warm, but overall I like the aesthetic. The service is indifferent. The food is mediocre. My mother and I had the spit-roasted chicken, which we agreed was underseasoned and dry. My sister liked her shrimp scampi, and my dad enjoyed his roast-beef sandwich. Stopped here with co-workers for lunch and we were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is VERY interesting. It's very dark and almost "mideval manor-ish". They have REAL candles the light each table but if you have trouble seeing forget it. It's very dark but it's historical and unique too! Co-workers had the onion soup which they raved about. I have the grilled ham & swiss on foccacia with potato salad. It was very good. Co-workers had a BLT and the cheese/fruit plate and we all left feeling satisfied and intrigued in a way. Met up with old friends for dinner and drinks and had a wonderful time!! Everyone raved about the crab dip and crab cakes --- this is definitely the way to go! I had a garden salad, as a vegetarian there wasn't much to choose other than garden salads or a flatbread but my company was so great I didn't mind. Drinks were wonderful, great selection and great pours. Overall we did wait awhile for food and the staff was not overly friendly but the food made up for it. I don't review often. Only think I need to highlight discrepancies of other reviewers. The Tavern doesn't take reservations. So my family of 9 decided to wait for 30 minutes on two tables. Based on reputation, we thought it was worth the wait even if we were split up. The wait, however, turned to 75 minutes. Not worth it. The inside waiting area has enough room for four. On the Friday night between Christmas and New Years, there were 6 families waiting to be served - very cramped on a December night when most didn't want to wait outside long. I'm writing this review before we were served. I'm sure the food will be fine. Once seated - the service was lovely. But - a couple points for future patrons - 1) Not toddler friendly! The inside waiting area is super tight and the outside waiting area is next to the parking lot. There is nowhere for kiddos to move if you need to wait long. 2) If you can't find parking...assume the wait will match accordingly. Kind of obvious...but that should have been our first clue we were in for a long wait. 3) Finally - if you or anyone in your party has a low tolerance for waiting on your meal, consider other options.
