I've been at the Dobbins House at least several times for the past decade and noticed 2 weeks ago that they were having a buffet for Mother's Day from 10AM until 3PM, so I made us reservations for 10:15. We parked about a block away intentionally since the restaurant parking lot is not huge. After checking with the greeter we were promptly seated andvgreeted by our server, Linda, who was great throughout. There was a huge assortment of foods many of which you can see in my accompanying photos. What you cannot ascertain, however, is how delicious everything was! The prime rib was outstanding as was everything else. The did serve "Mom-Osas" and other spiritus libations. The deserts were wonderful as well, albeit perhaps a bit too sweet for this prediabetic. A lovely touch was a rose for each Mom who was there! ALL servers were attentive and courteous which was nice. Overall 'twas a delightful experience! Og, the pricevwas $50 per person. Visited over the Valentines Day weekend as Dobbin is definitely an excellent choice for a special occasion - reservation was for 7pm in the main dining rooms & we were seated within a minute or two (I've always noticed that they seem to have an efficient/accurate system - have never had a long wait... even on the busiest days). We were greeted immediately by our server in period garb & placed our drink/app orders. Another highlight is the basket of breads, which are fantastic. We ordered the NY Strip & Primal Rib of Beef® - both as always made to perfection! We had live entertainment as a gentleman with a lute moved about the dining rooms. Timing of the food arrivals was perfect and as always, we had a relaxing & enjoyable meal. My wife and I went on a busy Saturday for lunch. The staff was limited so we had to wait for a while to get seated and served but it was worth it. The food was delicious! I also had their iced tea - it was unsweetened and delicious. We sat outside on their patio. It was a perfect spot for lunch on a warm and sunny spring day. I have been coming here since I was a child & I am so grateful this place hasn't changed a bit! Stopped by in early December for the first time in years and the only thing on my mind was the french onion soup! My mom and I made the 4 hour drive solely for this soup and it is always worth it! Perfectly cheesy and beefy ugh it's a meal itself! I got to have an alcoholic beverage for the first time since visiting and the bloody mary was so delicious! My mom got the Dobbin House Ale & even got some to take home! I also ordered the blue cheese burger which was unreal. Cooked perfectly medium rare with a huge slab of blue cheese! I called to book a group of 21. Dobbin house is a great choice! I love the homemade bread basket, it's so yummy. Also the french onion soup is alwys a hit. With the 20 people that had dinner, they all enjoyed it. I think we likely had one of everything on the menu :) I end up here once a year or so. And each time the staff is attentive, on point and just gracious. They also split all the checks!! That is a huge feat, which they do with ease. Parking can be tight, so arrive early and hunt for some parking. They do have some ADA parking in front. My standalone favorite will alwys be the French onion soup. read more

We had a nice family dinner at the Dobbin House Tavern - partly museum, partly restaurant. I highly recommend the King's Baked Onion Soup! They offer three dining experiences: a casual tavern (no reservations accepted), a fine dining option (reservations recommended), and a banquet room for large groups of 30+. We came as a party of 21 for the casual tavern experience, and as expected, they had to split us into three smaller tables. I had originally called to reserve fine dining tables, but some in our group didn't pack fancier clothes, so we pivoted to the tavern. The Dobbin House, built in 1776, is Gettysburg's oldest standing structure and is rich with history--it even served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The preserved architecture and period decor make dining here feel like stepping back in time. We were worried this might be a tourist trap with high prices and average food, but we were pleasantly surprised--the food was delicious. My Bleu Cheeseburger was loaded with big chunks of bleu cheese and cooked perfectly. My favorite dish, though, was the Baked Kings Onion Soup--generous amounts of melted cheese made it absolutely irresistible. The food quality was very inconsistent some dishes came out undercooked while others were overcooked, which made it hard to enjoy anything we ordered. Overall, the meal just wasn't good, and to make matters worse, it left me with a stomachache afterward. The roasted 1/2 chicken was awesome. Super flavorful and moist. My wife got the filet milan. We wear very hungry, sorry no pictures. We where told a 45 minute wait and we waited 45 minutes. Not a complaint, I really like when a place is so good they keep promises. We ate in the cellar, that is the place to eat. It is a ratskeller. The food service was excellent. I have been here several times over the last few years and each visit has been excellent. It's a beautiful historic building with multiple levels. It also houses a cute little store with country-type items like candles, knitwear, jewelry, ornaments and souvenirs. There are different areas that you can choose to dine in: the basement Spring House Tavern and the formal dining areas. We have enjoyed meals in every section. The only thing I would say would be for any older folks or people with decreased mobility is that you may want to avoid the upper level. The stairs are plentiful to get to the second floor and the seats were pretty low. That being said, there are sturdy railings whether you choose basement, main level or upper. The menu has something for every palate. The crabcakes are excellent with good flavor and minimal filler. The steaks are always top-notch. I'm a huuuge fan of the pecan pie and if you pair that with a hot buttered rum, it is sheer bliss. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this place, but the SH Tavern does not take reservations, so you might have a significant wait certain times. read more

This evening the gang dined at the historic Dobbin House Tavern. The building still retains its original 18th-century charm, featuring native stone walls, seven fireplaces, 4 stories, 8 dining rooms, and hand-carved woodwork. Many furnishings match those of that era. Built in 1776 by Reverend Alexander Dobbin, the Dobbin House Tavern is the oldest standing structure in Gettysburg, and where Rev. Dobbin raised his 19 children by two marriages. During the Battle of Gettysburg, the Dobbin House served as a makeshift field hospital for wounded soldiers, where the wounded filled the house from basement to attic. Dining tables became operating stations, bedrooms were used for surgeries, and the grounds bore the marks of intense suffering and loss. It later became a school, as well as part of the Underground Railroad with secret or hidden rooms that are still visable today. The Dobbin House Tavern is a living museum of American history, blending fine dining with stories of courage, education, and freedom. It is said that Lincoln gave his address just steps from where the tavern stands today. On top of all that history, our dinner this evening was memorable. What a wonderful dining experience at Dobbin House. We were promptly seated in the library room for our 5 pm reservation and served by a wonderful woman who ensured a fantastic dining experience (sorry, I can't recall her name). I ordered the special soup, cream of crab and the house beer, both were outstanding. We were served a basket of hot (and I mean hot) rolls and sweet slices of bread. House salad was generous and delightful. The star of the evening were the crab cakes. They were full of lump crab. I selected the sweet potato side and it was perfect. Pretty good food, with an atmosphere that is borderline kitschy. Be prepared for a packed venue, mostly with tourists. This was first time I ever got a seat, despite multiple visits during my previous trips to the area. Even then, all that was available was a singe spot at the bar. In terms of history, the place is the real deal. I really enjoyed the cellar vibe downstairs; it's not too dark but dark enough to make you wonder how historic patrons got by with lanterns. The servers were also dressed for the part. The menu was basically all pub staples. Nothing stood out, but nothing looked bad either. I went with a French onion soup, hot beef sandwich, sarsaparilla root beer and a spiced apple wine. I got the impression that Dobbins House is known for its French onion soup, and I agree, it was pretty good. The sandwich was nothing spectacular but hit the spot. Prices didn't seem excessive. Service was good given how busy it was, although you might be forced to wait longer than you like. But the servers definitely tried their best to keep up. I'd give it 3.5 stars. This restaurant gets rave Yelp reviews and our server from breakfast recommended it so we stopped in. Short wait for a two person table, which means we got very lucky, and we came early in a Friday evening. Make a reservation. The menu is seafood and meat concentrated with some salads thrown in. I had the onion soup and it was rich, beefy, and quite delicious. My husband had the crab cake, which he said was light and tasty. We also had the roast beef sandwich (aka a French dip) shed a bacon cheeseburger. Both were lovely. The only drawback for me was the lighting is so dim, I literally held my menu up to the candle to read it. The downstairs has a lovely old pub charm to it but leans heavily toward claustrophobic and the tables are minuscule sized. It was too dark to take pictures of the food. read more

The oldest house in Gettysburg, eating at The Dobbin House is a history lover's and food lover's dream. If you can, try to take the free tour before eating lunch there on weekends (tour is on select days) and you learn so much and can see the entire house and learn about it's fascinating history. Plus they put you first on the reservation list for lunch. The Dobbin House Restaurant was a favorite spot for Mamie Eisenhower to eat. Food was absolutely delicious and included items authentic to the time period. Portion sizes are large, be prepared for this to be your primary meal for the day, regardless of whether you go for lunch or dinner. Do not skip the desserts - they're worth it. As a crab dip enthusiast - their crab dip lived up to my high standards. And the homemade blue cheese dressing was delicious - you can order to go portions of their homemade dressings to take home. Lunch is served in the historic tavern. Dinner can be in the tavern or upstairs in the fine dining room which used to be living and bedroom areas of the house. They really pack 'em in here. We were seated in a small room with 3 other tables of couples and one table of 4. Although our table had a nice set of wing back chairs, my wife's chair partially blocked the entrance to the room. We both ordered the Broiled Filet with a baked potato and house salad. For a posh establishment I was surprised to see the dressing come in covered dispensing cup like you get in take-out. The steaks were good and melt in your mouth tender, potato as well, I probably should have opted for something other than the house salad but I was probably more intertest in the steak anyway. Came in on a Monday afternoon, we were seated quickly. We were originally told it would be a 20 minute wait but was only 10 minutes! The hostess was very friendly and our waitress was exceptional. The dining room is in the basement and had an old pub feeling; dimly lit and lots of wood features. The wait staff is dressed in older 1700/1800 clothing and the restaurant plays whimsical music you're transported back in time. We ordered the spit roasted chicken, open faced Rueben, and the onion soup. The onion soup was fantastic and non traditional with beef chunks, my husband really enjoyed it. He ordered the open faced Rueben and also loved that. I ordered the chicken; the meal comes with a side salad, baked potato, and of course the chicken. The salad was great with their homemade dressing. The baked potato was cooked well. The chicken was juicy and I loved the seasoning on the chicken itself. Dobbin House is in a 18th century historic building. Main floor has a Tavern (Springhouse). Upstairs is a more formal dining room (Alexander Dobbin Dining Room) where we dined. We learned about the history of the house from our waitress. She was very friendly and a bit busy and did mix up our drink order but figured it out. The menu is interesting with several different crab items. We were served fresh homemade bread. My crabmeat aka Dobbin was blue crab in hot butter sauce and delicious. Decided on the historical Dobbin House Tavern for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Luckily, we were able to snag two seats at the bar. The tavern dining area is somewhat smaller and fills up quickly. Our bartender was attentive with all 8-ish patrons and brought us drinks and menus within a few minutes of sitting down. They ended up kicking the keg of the beer I ordered halfway through my pour. She didn't charge me for the half beer, which was nice. We ordered lunch entrees, the hot beef sandwich and the springhouse salad that comes with two thick slices of the homemade date nut bread and cream cheese. My salad was phenomenal. I love a "busy" salad with tons of ingredients and textures. This salad has nuts, berries, cheese, turkey, and fresh mixed greens with a homemade dressing. The nut bread was on another level. It had the moistness of a banana bread, but the spices and crunch of a great nut bread. There were a decent amount of chocolate chips in were too which was pleasantly unexpected. I honestly didn't see the need for the cream cheese. My bf loved his hot beef sandwich and said the coleslaw was crisp and had a nice flavor. I'm SO glad we stumbled upon this gem! It was late lunch on a weekday but still so packed and I can see why - the food and atmosphere are both amazing! We had the King's Onion Soup to start with, then we each had a different sandwich (I had the hot beef dip which was super flavorful and amazingly delicious). We finished off with the apple pie with vanilla ice cream. The apple pie was different from the pies we're used to, but still hot and delicious! Our waitress was lovely and so nice, despite how busy it was!
