Having eaten at the Gateway Family Diner a couple of times, my experiences have always been very nice. I come to Gettysburg once a year for a big fundraising gala and it is the next morning that a whole group of us go for brunch here. The service is quick and efficient at getting he us seated with menus and coffee. They are good at informing us of any specials. And the food generally comes out for everyone at the same time. This is like a diner but as a restaurant. The decor is more country style (a little aged) and the place was clean and the people nice. Our waitress gave us great service. We were a party of 5. I got the breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage (it came with both). A lot of food for the price. I could've easily split my meal with someone. Some of our party got the crab cakes and were pleasantly surprised how good they were. (They were recommended by the people we met there.) One of our party got liver and onions and was pleased. Two people got the tapioca pudding, which I thought was an off choice for dessert, but they said it was the best they ever had and it was light and fluffy. Visited this diner for a soccer tournament in town. I saw it had a fairly high rating, so we decided to check it out! It was delicious and worth the visit! We arrived at 9am on Sunday which was good timing as it was busy, but their customer service and timing were impeccable. I ordered the Gateway breakfast as did my husband, and as soon as we ordered it, it was prepared for us in less than 10 minutes. The food was delicious but the home fries needed just a bit more cooking as did the onions on top. Other than that, you got your money's worth and walked out with a full belly. For two gateway breakfast meals, OJ, and coffee, we paid less than $35 dollars for the meal. Super clean and cute, great diner spot to visit if in town! Tried this diner for the first time today for lunch. My wife had a Reuben Panini, which was delicious and huge. She commented that the corned beef was tender so it didn't get pulled out of the roll when you were eating it. I had a salad with blue cheese dressing and the hamburger steak with brown gravy and onions from the senior menu along with some onion rings, which were an additional $1.99 charge. I ordered the hamburger steak, medium rare, and it did not come that way. It came medium/well, but it was so tasty that I didn't mind. My blue cheese salad was excellent also. Our server, Noah was very attentive and the service was excellent. The restaurant has an incredibly varied menu and everything on the menu is served all day long. The restaurant is clean and neat as are the restrooms. There are two display cases with a delicious display of desserts as you enter the diner. Lunch with soft drinks for two was $29 plus a 20% tip that we left. We definitely will be dining here again. read more

So, our 3rd time here and we still can't decide if we like it or not but ill explain. Place is normally clean, wasn't today, its very spacious, we'll lit and the menu has all your favorites. The first 2 visits were for breakfast which were mediocre. Eggs are cooked to death potatoes are ok, toast was cold, moving on, today I ordered a "Texas Hot" and a Rueben. A Texas Hot is supposed to be Hot Dog that originated in North Western New York which comes with raw onion, mustard and a Chilli sauce, this one doesn't come close, its just a Chili Dog, it has the right ingredients however the sauce is a very sweet Chilli and the bun was hard as a rock. Hard pass! The Rueben was good, all the right amount of ingredients but the bread was soggy. Being a retired resteraunt owner, there is a trick to perfect toasted rye bread. The fries were very good, nice crunch. Back to cleanliness, the table was dirty, floor was filthy and there were Gnats buzzing around our table. In the end, we will come back again, maybe we got them on Another bad day. read more

What quick service! Our very friendly and helpful waitress had our four orders back to us before one could use the restroom. And what a large selection, from bar food to a sit down dinner, the menu while vast did not offer much in the way of a kids menu. However, breakfast is served all day. The food was really good, the service was excellent, and the cakes and pies...oh my what a delight! So many to choose from and then you can take a huge (and I mean the size of your head!) strudels home to feed your entire family for breakfast. Definitely kid friendly (they can find something on the adult menu, it's ok), clean, and very welcoming. Finally, price. I paid about $75 for a family of four (3 adults and a child). That is about what I paid for McDonald in the way down here and $25 less than the hotel restaurant for more and better food (plus deserts). I would recommend Gateway Family Diner for anyone wanting good, right priced, quality food, in a family friendly setting. read more

This is a great secret in Gettysburg and it is a secret only because it is not in the midst of "Touristy" part of town. The place is clean, the breakfast menu is solid comfort food that is made well. Service is great, wait staff is attentive and helpful. The food arrived so fast it startled me. My eggs were cooked perfectly and I am fussy about my eggs! This place has a diner feel but it is large. Now I didn't have any baked goods but what I saw in their cases in the front lead me to believe they are probably good. This place is best found with GPS since it is nestled in behind a theater and in the midst of two hotels. Did I mention that the prices are reasonable? While in Gettysburg we stayed next door to the Gateway Diner, so we had to check them out. The service was great, our sever was very attentive and ensured we had a good experience. The breakfast menu isn't quite as big as one would think but it has all of the diner classics. I got the Gateway Classic (pancakes, eggs, home fries, and meat for $12). We also got the Irish Eggs Benedict. The home fries weren't as crispy as I would prefer and were pretty bland. Once I added some salt, Pepper, and ketchup they were good to go. The rest of the food was great! The pancakes were fluffy and had a subtle hint of vanilla in them. The setting is very diner-ish, to include a display case up front with lots of dessert options (apologies for not getting a picture). Parking at this place is spread out across Different places. It can be very easy . Or you could get a little wet if it's raining. Let's start out with the service. Are food came out in good time. Are server herself was ok. The menu was large enough that it's easy to pick out something for a dinner setting. They a few daily specials that are not on the menu. Soups are home made and had decent flavor. Today at our table was ordered the roast turkey. It was very good. I do recommend that it came with home, made filling. Beef stroganoff was also ordered that came with spiral macaroni noodles. honestly, I did not care for the flavor of that( could be personal taste) our food was hot and the portion were relatively large. I was staying at the hotel right next door and decided to try it. Staff were super friendly, especially my waitress. However, my salad was so dripping wet with water that it was nearly floating in the bowl. My lovely waitress was awesome and got me a wrap instead but I could tell they took the very wet salad and put it on a tortilla. Sweet potato fries were great though! This was a rare repeat on a vacation trip because it was so convenient to my hotel. It is a solid diner and the decor reflects that. Restaurant was clean and staff was uniformed and well turned out. It was slow and staff was hustling and taking care of side work. It wasn't an issue I was actually impressed. I was waited on promptly and food was delivered quickly. I ordered the meatloaf and it came with beef barley soup( there were other choices) soup was above average. Meatloaf tasted like stuffed green peppers. It was unusual but I like stuffed green peppers so it wasn't an issue. Menu is basic diner fare and prices were very reasonable. I came back for breakfast. I had the special including eggs, French toast, home fries and choice of meats. I chose scrapple because I've never had it before. Turns out it's what we call goetta only with organ meat. Today was our 1st visit to this newly opened restaurant. You can tell things are still a little hectic and being worked out. They need to consider adding more handicapped spots. I saw only 2. You can park along the street and there is a parking lot. We lucked out and someone was leaving as we pulled in. The restaurant inside is very nice and the staff was friendly but seemed stressed. The menu has a lot to offer, including all day breakfast options! I had the turkey platter with dressing. It comes with a potato and 1 vegetable. Also a choice of soup or salad, and homemade rolls. My husband ordered a chefs salad. I asked if I could have fries with gravy as my veg and if I could have them as an appetizer. It became a theme as I overheard other patrons receive the same response that changes weren't able to be made and my fries couldn't come out at a different time because everything goes in at one time. Yet my salad came out separate (hmmm). The salad is big for a side salad! It's still the typical lettuce, 2 cherry tomatoes and 2 cucumbers ( oh and a piece of onion). It didn't take long for the entrees to come out. The portions were great! I didn't receive my potatoes and wasn't asked if I wanted some of their homemade rolls. It took me halfway through my meal to be able to flag down our waitress to let her know I never received the potatoes and if I could please have some rolls. She immediately returned with my items and I received one roll with no butter. (I didn't bother to ask for it after waiting). I kinda felt like she was questioning if I did receive the potatoes and ate them asking for more lol. Ironically I had a picture of my plate for this review Incase it became a question. We live in the next town over and this is our first time here. we came for breakfast. I ordered an egg, sausage and cheese bagel. it was the BEST breakfast sandwich I have ever had. Reviews VS Reality Im not one to leave bad reviews, I rather speak to management & give them feedback so they can get better (which we did) but this one needs to be re-rated Seems this place used to be good, but as of right now, thats no longer the case. We were seated quickly, the guy who seated us seemed welcoming. The waitress came quickly too & was nice, however we noticed she was "efficient" yet very disengaging. Just said hello & quickly moved to ask what we were drinking but in a rush manner (BTW the restaurant was not busy at all). Since its a diner, we have visited many others before, my daughter asked for a sherly temple to what the waitress answered "we are not a bar", she didnt offered her options so we had to jump in & suggested to get her a sprite then. I asked for water with lemon but just got the water. My son asked for a NE clam chowder soup and got a broccoli soup instead. We ordered a french onion soup which we had to returned (it looked nothing like the pictures we saw on previous reviews, it was flavorless & super watery. The waitress quickly took it back and replaced it, this time with the NE clam chowder which was ok. However, once again the waitress was too "efficient", moving so fast, almost running away from the table all the time, so I was having a hard time trying to comunicate with her that I still wanted the lemon for the water. (It had a strong tap water taste so there was drinking it without lemon) My daughter's burger was good yet fries came out cold. My son ordered a spagetti chicken parm, sauce was straight out the can and overcooked pasta (he only ate 1/3 of it). My husband ordered the Fishermans platter, was not good either. All of it was frozen seafood without seasonin, it was more breading than seafood, the crab cake was just a cracker mash with crab flavor (He just ate the shrimp, left the rest). My beerbattered cod fish basked was the better food from it all, good flavor, done right. While we were dissapointed with the food, we got even more dissapointed with what happened while paying. The same guy who sat us in the beginning (I believe his name is Ahmed) Asked us how was everything? So we went ahead to provide constructive feedback and said that the food needs improvement. While explaining about the platter the guy interrumpted and went towards the entrance of the kitchen where the waitress was and started screaming at her & someone in the kitchen in a very disrespectful manner & so loud we could hear him all the way to the entrace where the register is... That didnt settle well with us at all!!! While the service was not all there, the truth is the waitress was still nice & she was probably just having an off day... However, the food choices /quality that its being bought to serve to the customers is not the waitress or the kitchen staff fault. Besides that and more importantly the behavior this guy had towards the staff was completely innapropiate & uncalled for. Shortly after the yelling part, another lady came out with the guy to the register to assist us. "Are you the same people who send back the onion soup? That's different than the onion rings". Im not sure what they guy told her, but we were not asking to get a refund on the food or a discount, which we quickly made clear to the lady. We explained we were just giving feedback with the intention for them to get better. She was polite and appreciative of it, still gave us a discount and thanked us for the honest feedback. She mentioned this place has been under new management for about 6 months (which to us explains the changes... Reviews VS current reality) I really hope they get the feedback to heart and look into making the food experience & service better. They have a great location and great potential to turn it around if they are willing to stop cutting corners and get their menu to what a true diner is all about. More importantly I hope they take care of the situation with this Ahmed guy, and show respect and take good care of their employees. Best of luck and truly hope they can work it around. read more

We went for breakfast Christmas Eve morning. The food was excellent. We had a variety of French toast, sausage, baked oatmeal and eggs. I stayed in the Gettysburg Courtyard, and this diner is in the parking lot. Everyone I was with ate here for several meals during our stay. It was convenient to walk over, the prices were outstanding, the food was all excellent and came out fast, and the service was exactly right - friendly, helpful, there when you need them, but not irritating. The only reason I only gave 4 stars is that the home fries were a disappointment-they very thinly sliced potatoes not cooked nearly enough. So sub tots if you get breakfast (which you definitely should). read more
