We wanted to give Gateway Diner another chance after a disappointing dinner visit, so we came back for breakfast. Sadly, it was another letdown. One thing I will say is that the restaurant itself is very nice. The dining room is clean, updated, and has a newer feel rather than the classic old school diner atmosphere, which we really liked. Our waitress was also friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. My husband's bagel sandwich with double sausage, egg, and cheese was excellent. It was easily the highlight of the meal. Everything else missed the mark. We both ordered home fries, but they were only lightly browned on top while the rest of the potatoes were saturated with what tasted like butter or oil. After one bite, neither of us could eat them. My two over medium eggs were cooked correctly, but the wheat toast was very thin and lacked the crisp texture you expect from toast. The biggest disappointment was the corned beef hash. I specifically ordered it well done and very crispy, but it was only browned on one side while the other side was still soft and undercooked. We asked if it could be cooked longer, but when it came back it wasn't much different. I took one more bite and still couldn't eat it. By the end of the meal, most of my breakfast and both orders of home fries were still on the plates, and my husband had only eaten his sandwich. We paid for the entire meal without complaint, but no one asked if something was wrong or why so much food had been left behind. A simple check in or offering to make things right would have made a big difference. We know every restaurant can have an off day, and we genuinely hope others have a better experience than we did. Hubby and I ate at this location several times during our stay - breakfast, late lunch and dinner. Each meal was very good - from the greeting, to the waiter/waitress, to the food served exactly how we liked it. The pot roast special was enough for two hungry people, the homemade soup was better than my own, and breakfast was great on our departure morning. Coffee was something I looked forward to. The menu is extensive, just like the diners we grew up with, and the specials were varied. We would actually stop by if we were in the area again - it was that good. read more

We come here often because its convenient as the food here is mediocre at best and ill explain. I odered a Pizza Burger this trip in and the burger was cooked ok but the roll was hard and dry and there was almost no pizza sauce. (See picture) and what they call an omelet is not an omelet but rather it is a Fritatta. Fritattas fillings are mixed directly into the eggs and is cooked slowly on the stove before finishing in the oven, whereas an omelette is cooked quickly on the stovetop and folded over its filling. This is like a diner but as a restaurant. The decor is more country style (a little aged) and the place was clean and the people nice. Our waitress gave us great service. We were a party of 5. I got the breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage (it came with both). A lot of food for the price. I could've easily split my meal with someone. Some of our party got the crab cakes and were pleasantly surprised how good they were. (They were recommended by the people we met there.) One of our party got liver and onions and was pleased. Two people got the tapioca pudding, which I thought was an off choice for dessert, but they said it was the best they ever had and it was light and fluffy. I'm sure when we're ready to go for a country drive to a cute historical town, the Gateway will be a good place to stop for lunch or an all-day breakfast. read more

Visited this diner for a soccer tournament in town. I saw it had a fairly high rating, so we decided to check it out! It was delicious and worth the visit! We arrived at 9am on Sunday which was good timing as it was busy, but their customer service and timing were impeccable. I ordered the Gateway breakfast as did my husband, and as soon as we ordered it, it was prepared for us in less than 10 minutes. The food was delicious but the home fries needed just a bit more cooking as did the onions on top. Other than that, you got your money's worth and walked out with a full belly. For two gateway breakfast meals, OJ, and coffee, we paid less than $35 dollars for the meal. Super clean and cute, great diner spot to visit if in town! Tried this diner for the first time today for lunch. My wife had a Reuben Panini, which was delicious and huge. She commented that the corned beef was tender so it didn't get pulled out of the roll when you were eating it. I had a salad with blue cheese dressing and the hamburger steak with brown gravy and onions from the senior menu along with some onion rings, which were an additional $1.99 charge. I ordered the hamburger steak, medium rare, and it did not come that way. It came medium/well, but it was so tasty that I didn't mind. My blue cheese salad was excellent also. Our server, Noah was very attentive and the service was excellent. The restaurant has an incredibly varied menu and everything on the menu is served all day long. The restaurant is clean and neat as are the restrooms. There are two display cases with a delicious display of desserts as you enter the diner. Lunch with soft drinks for two was $29 plus a 20% tip that we left. We definitely will be dining here again. read more

Having eaten at the Gateway Family Diner a couple of times, my experiences have always been very nice. I come to Gettysburg once a year for a big fundraising gala and it is the next morning that a whole group of us go for brunch here. The service is quick and efficient at getting he us seated with menus and coffee. They are good at informing us of any specials. And the food generally comes out for everyone at the same time. What quick service! Our very friendly and helpful waitress had our four orders back to us before one could use the restroom. And what a large selection, from bar food to a sit down dinner, the menu while vast did not offer much in the way of a kids menu. However, breakfast is served all day. The food was really good, the service was excellent, and the cakes and pies...oh my what a delight! So many to choose from and then you can take a huge (and I mean the size of your head!) strudels home to feed your entire family for breakfast. Definitely kid friendly (they can find something on the adult menu, it's ok), clean, and very welcoming. Finally, price. I paid about $75 for a family of four (3 adults and a child). That is about what I paid for McDonald in the way down here and $25 less than the hotel restaurant for more and better food (plus deserts). This is a great secret in Gettysburg and it is a secret only because it is not in the midst of "Touristy" part of town. The place is clean, the breakfast menu is solid comfort food that is made well. Service is great, wait staff is attentive and helpful. The food arrived so fast it startled me. My eggs were cooked perfectly and I am fussy about my eggs! This place has a diner feel but it is large. Now I didn't have any baked goods but what I saw in their cases in the front lead me to believe they are probably good. Poor service. We were seated almost right away and told our Server would be there shortly. While waiting we noticed three servers behind the bar. The manager during this time came out of the kitchen arguing with the staff right in front of customers. Our server walked by us and walked over slowly to the font of the dessert case and back behind the bar were he stood in front of the bulletin board. We noticed when we dined here a few months ago, the quality of food was not as good as a previous experience, but thought maybe they had a new cook who just wasn't very well seasoned yet so gave them another try. The breakfast menu isn't quite as big as one would think but it has all of the diner classics. I got the Gateway Classic (pancakes, eggs, home fries, and meat for $12). We also got the Irish Eggs Benedict. The home fries weren't as crispy as I would prefer and were pretty bland. Once I added some salt, Pepper, and ketchup they were good to go. The rest of the food was great! The pancakes were fluffy and had a subtle hint of vanilla in them. The setting is very diner-ish, to include a display case up front with lots of dessert options (apologies for not getting a picture). Parking at this place is spread out across Different places. It can be very easy . Or you could get a little wet if it's raining. Let's start out with the service. Are food came out in good time. Are server herself was ok. The menu was large enough that it's easy to pick out something for a dinner setting. They a few daily specials that are not on the menu. Soups are home made and had decent flavor. Today at our table was ordered the roast turkey. It was very good. I do recommend that it came with home, made filling. I ordered the meatloaf and it came with beef barley soup( there were other choices) soup was above average. Meatloaf tasted like stuffed green peppers. I had the special including eggs, French toast, home fries and choice of meats. I chose scrapple because I've never had it before. Turns out it's what we call goetta only with organ meat. Today was our 1st visit to this newly opened restaurant. You can tell things are still a little hectic and being worked out. They need to consider adding more handicapped spots. I saw only 2. You can park along the street and there is a parking lot. We lucked out and someone was leaving as we pulled in. The restaurant inside is very nice and the staff was friendly but seemed stressed. The menu has a lot to offer, including all day breakfast options! I had the turkey platter with dressing. It comes with a potato and 1 vegetable. Also a choice of soup or salad, and homemade rolls. My husband ordered a chefs salad. I asked if I could have fries with gravy as my veg and if I could have them as an appetizer. It became a theme as I overheard other patrons receive the same response that changes weren't able to be made and my fries couldn't come out at a different time because everything goes in at one time. Yet my salad came out separate (hmmm). The salad is big for a side salad! It's still the typical lettuce, 2 cherry tomatoes and 2 cucumbers ( oh and a piece of onion). It didn't take long for the entrees to come out. The portions were great! I didn't receive my potatoes and wasn't asked if I wanted some of their homemade rolls. It took me halfway through my meal to be able to flag down our waitress to let her know I never received the potatoes and if I could please have some rolls. She immediately returned with my items and I received one roll with no butter. (I didn't bother to ask for it after waiting). I kinda felt like she was questioning if I did receive the potatoes and ate them asking for more lol. Ironically I had a picture of my plate for this review Incase it became a question.
