This place is really a hidden gem! We were looking for a place in Orange which was open, while we were passing through on our way home in Fredericksburg. The menu offers an amazing variety, and the food is absolutely amazing! Judging from the presentation and taste, the chef is a graduate from culinary school, and the staff is both friendly and helpful with menu choices. This place is the real deal. After reading many reviews of the restaurant, I assumed people were being nice in their assessment of this tucked away restaurant. But, boy was I wrong. We visited for Saturday brunch and while the restaurant was busy, we were promptly seated. Some notes about the food.. a) It all had great flavor and taste b) The portion sizes were very generous There was not a single thing we ordered that we felt was inferior to anything else and we made a valiant (but failed) effort to finish everything we had ordered. Hubby and I went looking for a good breakfast/brunch spot. Decided to try Spoon & Spindle. Here's the breakdown: Cute little restaurant with charming and modern ambiance. Ordered hot tea and water. Hot tea selections were minimal and aside from a lemon/ginger tea you'll find basic choices. Some fruity/seasonal options would have been nice. They did have honey which is a plus. Served in a mug minus a plate. I'd ask for a plate for your spoon and tea bag otherwise plopping it on the table is an option. Water served in a cute mason jar. Blueberry Breakfast Bread Pudding ($5) made with French Toast, Blueberries, Honey Butter, Lemon Royal Icing. Very sweet, lacked french toast flavor. Should read blueberry sauce as there were not fresh blueberries. My taste buds looked for then but I'm not sure where the honey butter or lemon flavors were in the royal icing. Avocado Toast ($10) on Grilled Sourdough, Avocado, "Local Garden". Pretty to look at with "local garden" being paper thin radish, arugula, and pickled onion. Went well together. Sliced avocado was fresh and sourdough toast was soft. Special item: Breakfast fried rice was unique and was a smorgasbord of breakfast items (egg, sausage, steak, and bacon) tossed with rice and Asian sauces. Interesting. Would be tasty with added potatoes and avocado. I'll keep fried rice to my lunch/dinner options. Hubby ordered Kent's Big Breakfast ($16) Two Eggs Your Way, Biscuit & Gravy, Bacon, Spuds, Grits. Eggs ordered scrambled with cheddar cheese and arrived that way. The bite of biscuits and gravy I helped myself to had cold gravy and the biscuit was airy versus a good ol dense texture. Bacon was soft and lacking just a little crisp. Spuds were little squares and couldn't tell if the were fresh or frozen and the grits were well, grits. Friendly staff. Creative dishes (can you say "bonut?"), reasonable prices, huge portions (just look at my CHIMICHANGA pic), modern farmhouse ambiance, and great tastes in every course to boot. Course reviews below: 1) Bonut (4.5/5) - I have tried a lottt of things, but have never encountered a biscuit/donut hybrid before (which is essentially a baked biscuit made into the shape of a donut). Admittedly, the first bite wasn't so eye-popping, though perhaps I was expecting a softer donut-y consistency, and this was instead very doughy and dense. After that mental confusion, though, every bite was delish with the dough complimenting well with ample berry/cream sauce. 2) Scotch Egg (4.5/5) - Part 2 of "I have tried a lottt of things, but have never encountered" this before! A boiled egg wrapped in sausage and coated and deep fried with breadcrumbs? I loved how neither the sausage or the egg overpowered one another. And there was a nice flavor zing to the sausage itself. Per the pic, this was also artistically presented sitting on a hash brown (which was actually a nice compliment). 3) Chorizo Chimichanga (5/5) - This was on the Specials menu on the white board, and we all need to do our part as a community/society/world and call the owner of Spoon & Spindle and demand this be put on the permanent menu FOREVER. It is THAT good. A gigantic burrito with both a soft tortilla wrapped around a deep friend tortilla (which somehow holds its texture throughout the eating experience) and packed full of chorizo, eggs, potatoes, and sauce (of which Spoon & Spindle does not skimp on). This restaurant is a hidden treasure. If you're not aware of it's location, you may have a bit of a struggle finding the front door. Look for the awning and follow the walkway to the second floor of the building. Glad we found a place for brunch. The host and servers are very attentive and friendly. The brick building warehouse-like atmosphere was very appropriate for the location The food was very tasty. I had the avocado toast which was delish. Besides the avocado slices was an avocado sauce that added so much flavor to the sandwich. My husband isn't adventurous and chose the breakfast burrito. The server suggested adding the steak, onions and bell peppers. My husband opted for the onions and peppers only. He gave it a two thumbs up. Menu looked awesome, with some Southern favourites and some unexpected items. We got the okonomiyaki and two biscuits (gravy and Benedict). Okonomiyaki was ok, but had way too much sweet sauce and mayo on it completely destroying the taste - if you want to know what a real okonomiyaki taste like visit Japantown in San Francisco. We had a wonderful lunch with a group of 5 of us! We all tried something different and everything was delicious. I got the Philly cheesesteak and it was the best I've ever had. The steak was thick and marinaded, and the melted cheese as thick and delicious. My husband got the cheeseburger and we get why we've heard so much about the special sauce- it's awesome. The pickles are were really tasty as well. My mom got the chicken soup and salad and finished it in record time! My sister got the noodle bowl, and for someone that's really picky, she was a member of the clean plate club.Lastly my aunt got the fried chicken sandwich and loved the sauce- she said it had a hidden kick that was a nice surprise. We ended with the brownie that was covered in a caramel sauce that was the die for with ice cream and a tasty berry sauce. We also got the "bonuts" and there were no regrets.
