I've been wanting to try the restaurant for awhile. Due to construction, I had a hard time finding it. They do have valet parking which I found out afterwards. I parked at a meter and had a 5 minute walk. It was good because I walked off my food. I ordered pancakes, potatoes, and grits. My food was so good. It came out piping hot. My server was super cool as well. The decor was nice. There was music playing. It was quiet. I was the only one in the dining room. I believe there's a hotel upstairs. Now THIS is a wonderful spot. Located on the base level of one of Indy's most gorgeous hotels, Le Méridien, it's a sparkling gem in Indy's downtown. On the left half of the main floor, there's an amazing lobby that's open to the public. There's a huge fireplace, amazing art, and rows of mini barrels of custom cocktails. On the right side of the main floor is Spoke & Steele, complete with a cozy dining room, unique (and stocked!) bar, and attentive service. While I initially thought that this was more of a "treat yourself" spot because of how luxurious it feels, I learned that they LOVE to have folks stop in for a cup of coffee at breakfast, quick sandwich or snack mid-day or a full-on dinner. This would be a great spot to even bring your laptop for some good bites and a quiet environment during the day. They also have incredibly SPECIAL private rooms that you can rent. There's a super awesome room for about 10 people that has super cool art, dim lighting and crazy fun lights. You can also rent out the bar area, the entire restaurant, the lobby, or have a group of about six people do their special barrel experience in the secret bar they have underground. It's soooo cool. Food wise, I've had the The Spoke Burger, house salad and yogurt parfait. They've all been absolutely delicious and are very appealing to the eye as well. If you haven't stopped in -- you should! On Thursday, November 7th, my coworker and I walked into the restaurant without a reservation and they had been bought out for the evening by three private parties that hadn't started yet. Jesse, the amazing bartender, offered to seat the two of us anyway and the Chef personally took our order. I had the Grilled Pork Chop and my coworker had the Steak Frites. Both were excellent choices and the drinks were made to perfection as well. I'm normally a steak guy, but cognac apple compote made me have no regrets for missing out on some beef :) Phenomenal. His Manhattan was perfect and when I made a comment about having the perfect Negroni earlier he took it upon himself to try to best it. I came in last night with a group of 11 women and was incredible disappointed. We should have taken the empty dining room at 6:15 on a Saturday as a sign to try something else, but we had seen the menu ahead of time and were excited to try it. We ordered one round of cocktails which were alright. Bruschetta and flatbread were also just okay.. Then, we waited about 45 minutes for entrees and our server told us the kitchen was backed up. By the time our food arrived, it was cold. I had the pear salad with salmon which was very mediocre. Bland and low quality salmon. All 11 of at the table described their entrees as "okay". We were ready to leave and asked for the check. Ten minutes later, the manager came to let us know their system lost track of all our orders. She offered to comp one round of cocktails for folks who had more than one drink. This would've been amazing and made up for the inconvenience, but no one had more than one drink so nothing was comped. Overall, it was overpriced and average bar food with terrible service. Due to Covid, I am going to give this place a pass. Our server, was so nice. It was his first day back since their restaurant was effected by Covid. However; we waited 15-20 minutes for a table. There were only 5 tables in the restaurant. The management definitely needs to step up their system. Our waiter was very kind and for the hand he was dealt, he did an outstanding job. We ordered a standard breakfast, Eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast. A breakfast sandwich and an order of B&Gs. Standard breakfast was absolutely terrible. I ordered scrambled with feta. Well I don't know what they did to my eggs, but they were the worst. The bacon was the only thing I even ate. Potatoes reminded me of the potatoes you get at a continental breakfast. And no, that's not a good thing. The toast...maybe this is a personal preference, but where is the butter? The best thing about toast is biting into the toast and having the butter make a statement. My fiancé said the sandwich was actually good. But again, potatoes. The Biscuits and Gravy. If you have read some of my reviews, I love B&Gs. They are my favorite thing about breakfast. I am an expert so to speak. I can't even cal these B&Gs. They were the worst thing I have ever tasted. The gravy was terrible and it was separated. It had a strange taste as well. Unsure tbh First impression, has good potential. Butts seemed a little unorganized..... experience could have been clouded, because it was New Year's Eve. We had a reservation, and they had told us on the phone that we would be able to order off the normal menu. But then they seated us and it was a pre-packed menu. So they told us we could order off the normal money but we had to move to a different section. So I'm pretty sure we were eating our meal like in the waiting area. Because we were literally the only people getting food, and everyone else was just having drinks and like waiting for their table. So that was a little bit odd. The charcuterie was pretty good, i've definitely had better. I was really looking forward to getting the pan seared chicken because I saw on the menu online. But they didn't have it so I got the salmon, it was pretty good wasn't wild about the carrots or anything else on my plate. Also got the cracked pepper Frites obviously. This place was awesome! We booked a reservation here around the holidays before a show. It was a great spot that wasn't overly crowded like the steakhouses get. The ambiance was perfect, lots of holiday decor (since it was dec) that made it really cozy. All the food was so good. Starting with the appetizers the mushroom duxelles were amazing. The sauce that came with it was to die for. The striped bass was cooked perfect and with an added veggie was just enough food. The polenta was interesting. Not bad, maybe just not my cup of tea. This was a very nice place to share some dinner with friends. We got there a little early but there was a comfortable waiting area with tvs and a variety of games to pass the time. My wife and I played some cards while we waited for the rest of our party. Once everyone was there we were seated straight away and given menus. I had the salmon and my wife had the Lobster special. I thought the salmon was cooked just right with very good flavor. The spinach and mashed potatoes were also very good. My wife, on the other hand, was not impressed with the Lobster. She found it lacking in substance and flavor and wished that she had selected something else from the menu. We shared a raspberry cake dessert that we both enjoyed very much. For me Spoke & Steele serves French cuisine with their own twist. Spoke & Steele adds their own take but keeps what make the French dish classic. I went early on a Friday evening and basically had the place to myself for awhile. Since it was my first time, my server, Jason, helped explain the menu to me and gave great suggestions (that weren't the most expensive on the menu and I appreciated that). For a starter I ordered the salade lyonnaise. It kept to the tradition of a salade lyonnaise you would find in France, but added a slightly spicy vinaigrette, which completed the cheese and jowled bacon well. For my main entree I ordered the baked rigatoni. The sauce was tomato based with charred brocolini. The ingredients didn't take away from the tomatoes being the main star of the dish. I felt both the salad and pasta could be enough for two people to share, so their portion sizes aren't skimpy (but also not obnoxious). For desert I ordered the chocolate mousse, which was also good. I had a cocktail to pair with the mousse and let the bartender create the drink (which was gin, vanilla type of syrup, and mint) and it really complimented the mousse nicely. I ordered an old fashion based on Jason's suggestion and it paired nicely with my main food. The food is on the more expensive side, but I think it's the worth the money that you do spend. There is metered street parking, OR there's the mall parking garage that's half a block away that's $3 for up to three hours. $14 for a whiskey glass half full? See photo of "fresh old fashioned"... Didn't matter anyway because it didn't taste good. Who wants a full cup of yuck anyway? Service is slow on a weeknight. Staff saw me waiting at the front for a table in their half empty restaurant and kept walking by. Cool, thanks. I love being overlooked. While I'm twiddling my thumbs at the "please wait to be seated" sign, a gentleman sitting at the booth is waving his arms slowly, gradually extending his arm to full length and increasing speed with every other wave trying to get someone's attention for service. Made me laugh out loud and realize sitting at the bar on my own was the only way to get noticed. Unfortunately, sitting at the bar only helped a little bit. Still long wait to order and even longer for my order of 2 appetizers to arrive. After 35min the bartender said she'd check on my order. There are a few Yelp tip saying their whiskey cocktail with bacon is amazing. They no longer sell it and 3 staff members had never heard of it before. Food was not that good. This restaurant was recommended by friends. We don't get out much anymore, especially since Covid. The service was good. The food ----not so much. Now let me say that I know times are challenging, and I appreciate efforts and I understand there are cut backs. We ordered the charcuterie board which was plentiful and loved the variety of bites--especially the smokey, pickled green tomatoes! That was my first bite--devine!!! The cheese variety was exceptional! So I ordered the beef bourguignon and my husband, the steak au poivre. It was an interpretation of the dishes which I wished that was explained. My dish had a red wine gel-yep gel--that was cold. It said there was a foam which was absent. and braised beef shank--which I never found. One bite of the cold gel was a completely unexpected and a turn off. My meal stopped dead in its tracks. My husband ordered the steak au poivre with duchess potatoes. If you have never had it--it's a steak with coarse black pepper ( a lot of it!) and a Cognac cream sauce and was served with duchess potatoes which are normally creamy, buttery, whipped potatoes that are browned on the peaks. If you have had the delight, you would have been disappointed with what was presented. My hubby gave me a bite which was adorned with a bone marrow, super garlicky butter, sans cream, sans pepper, and the faintest wisp of Cognac. The Duchess Potatoes were considerably over browned, and if tapped with a fork--the sound reminded me of crisp pavlova. It simply crumbled when you attempted to fork it. The waitress was kind and offered to replace the dish. But after I was unimpressed with Carsten's dish, I decided the wine was fantastic to be my meal. I didn't want to be disappointed again. I'm sure this place was wonderful and the pandemic did not help at all. But perhaps a simple review of the menu by staff would have helped tremendously. Select menu items that could have been well executed--delete the rest temporarily. Restaurants can't expect us to patronize their establishments during a partial lockdown and tolerate and pay for subpar food. We spent $200, less my meal, tipped on the full check and exceeded it. What hasn't changed is my desire for a satisfying meal that creates some sort of new connection between synapses as they fire away at the first novelty of a crafted cocktail, that first bite that ignites curiosity and initiates food surgeon as you begin dissecting meatballs trying to locate the source of the foodgasm. This was classic me at Spoke and Steele on a Friday night in downtown Indy, wondering if this was the real thing or a trendy bystander trying to fit in with a fast city run by steakhouses. A charming, hipster eclectic restaurant and bar held its own, and after one bite of Lamb Masala Meatballs, Exotic Mushroom Duxelles and their February Burger, there's more to Indy than just motor oil. MASALA LAMB MEATBALLS* As mentioned, intrigued, I began foraging through the lamb meatballs to find a fluffy light texture mix of lamb, onions and potatoes happily married to the slightly spicy signature satisfying taste of masala. Gently accompanied by curried rice and three slices of toasted pita bread, this was the dinner table favorite. EXOTIC MUSHROOM DUXELLES* Generosity poured over 3 slices of toasted baguette, mushrooms in a herb cream sauce grabs your attention from its woodsy presentation. It's fun to look at it and messy to eat but worth the digging into. Slightly challenging to eat as is, I resorted to the elegant option of cutting it into manageable portions which was also difficult as the knife was not sharp enough to cut into the overdone baguette. Taste wise: great texture and flavors from the mushrooms and a nice kick from spice. Improvement: A bit of citrus or some balsamic vinegar would have helped to cut the thickness and a less heat on the baguette. FEBRUARY BURGER* The combination of pimento cheese, chorizo, shrimp, jalapeño and Fischer Farms beef made for a burger I couldn't stop eating. My boyfriend and I split everything tapa style. When I found myself coming back to the burger, I had to pause to again, discover the why behind what amazingness was going on here. Hello Pimento. Rich, creamy and a perfect adhesive, this burger that looks hard to eat eventually becomes easy when you accept the support from fork and knife. Improvement: the beef patty was a little dry from being overdone. COCKTAILS: Amazing. We ordered their OLD FASHION (B.O.A.F) made with Old Barstow bourbon, Old Forester, and Middle West whiskey. The satisfaction continues with their BALL LIGHTNING, a refreshing egg white cocktail with West Fork Whiskey, grapefruit and peach. Didn't really taste the grapefruit. The sweet notes of peach and foamy Velvet blanket of egg white however were no introverts. If you desire something on the sweeter side, this drink is for you. Overall, Spoke and Steele gave us a meal worth talking about even after our stay in Indy. A nice break from the formalities of dress code and white tablecloth dining, come to SnS after work, or for the workaholics, if you must, grab a seat at the bar and make it a 16 hour work day (I saw a gentlemen working on his laptop while sipping on a glass of red). Great dinner date place where you can diverge from the loud clamor of cheap and loud bar talk; cozy up in one of their spacious booths or double up for a large party night out with good friends. I've been longing for a new and unique restaurant experience downtown, and here it is! Located inside the Le Méridien hotel, Spoke and Steele is everything you could want for an intimate restaurant experience. Everything from the decor, to the atmosphere to the excellent customer service makes me already look forward to my next visit here. Did I mention the restaurant even smells good?! It seriously smells like a men's cologne! By far my favorite part of the restaurant was the unique cocktail menu. The bartenders were amazing, their craftsmanship and eloquence is something everything restaurant should strive for. I was at the restaurant with a private party and one of the bartenders, Ethan, came in to check on our table. I was so amazed that he was able to handcraft specific drinks we were "craving"! I showed him a picture I had recently came across on the restaurants Instagram page (but was not on the menu) and he was more than happy to recreate the masterpiece!! Completely made my night! The restaurant is in a storied Indianapolis hotel and the menu as well as the service were wonderful.

We came to Spoke & Steele for Christmas Eve dinner. Unfortunately, the restaurant was absolutely freezing the entire time we were there. Also, they were out of three of the entrées, one of which was prime rib, which was the major reason that two out of out party of six were there. There was no other beef substitute. They ended up getting chicken but the lentil side dish was not to their liking. The service was very attentive, and the specialty drinks were very good. The experience might have been different if all the entrées would have been available, and the temperature of the restaurant would've been above 60° read more

I haven't been to Spoke & Steele in awhile, and after a fantastic tasting experience for lunch, I'm kicking myself for not putting this place into regular rotation before now! Scoring the services of Chef Greg Hardesty to consult on the menu is a huge coup, producing damn tasty results. Standout dishes ---- the Spoke Burger. The last few burgers I've had at other restaurants have been disappointing. This one restored my faith. I cannot wait to get in here and eat this again. Also, a delicious chopped salad with bits of housemade charcuterie, chickpeas, Swiss cheese, tomatoes and other veggies in a snappy lemon vinaigrette. Add on a hunk of bread, and you've got the perfect lunch. Also noteworthy are the sexy scallops atop umami broth with edamame. And the fragrant roasted chicken with root vegetables is the ultimate comfort food. In short, it's ALL good. For a special night out, Spoke and Steele is one of my favorite Indy spots! Every experience I've had here has felt unique, personal and just a step above. For a more social experience, I enjoy sitting at the bar. The bartenders are always super friendly and they can mix up some very creative cocktails -- and if all the branded barrels displayed in the front of the restaurant don't give it away, they especially know what's up with whiskey! If we're out for a more intimate evening, the back of the restaurant is more cozy and even has a separate side entrance so you don't have to weave through the busy bar area. In the kitchen, the chef makes some truly amazing dishes, and I love the emphasis on local ingredients, not just produce but meats and baked goods as well. A round of drinks with a charcuterie board is always a good place to start while I look through the newest menu items. On my most recent visit, I tried the potstickers in miso broth, which was so flavorful and just the perfect combination of salty and spicy. This place was a hidden gem! A cute brunch place in the center of downtown that has affordable brunch and dinner that also tastes amazing! The seating is so unique with single seat booths and there's cool architecture and decor! There's also a secret door if you can find it ;).
